Born in Yuryev-Polsky. Hearing about the angelic life of the Radonezh wonderworker, the youth came to St. Sergius and asked to be tonsured as a monk. The Monk Sergius foresaw the purity and prudence of the youth and gave him a test - he sent him to his disciple, the Monk Afanasy Vysotsky. But the Monk Athanasius did not immediately accept him. Only seeing the boy’s persistence, he tonsured him to the monastic rank. The Monk Nikon, while living with him, practiced prayer, studied the Holy Scriptures and excelled in virtue and purity.
Upon reaching adulthood, he was ordained to the priesthood.
After some time, the Monk Athanasius blessed him to see the Monk Sergius. The Monk Sergius, looking at him cheerfully, said: “It’s good that you came, child Nikon,” and kindly received him. He ordered St. Nikon to serve the brethren. The student spent whole days in monastic affairs, and nights in prayerful conversations with God. The Monk Sergius was consoled by his life. Having received special notice about him, the Monk Sergius ordered the disciple to stay with him in the same cell in order to make him a participant in spiritual progress. He lovingly taught him and explained a lot about the essence of spiritual life. The Monk Sergius appointed the Monk Nikon first to the position of assistant rector, and six months before his death, when he surrendered to silence, he appointed the disciple as his successor.
After the repose of St. Sergius (+ September 25, 1392), he lovingly supported everything that was established by the founder of the monastery. He used to attend all monastic services, but never abandoned common affairs, working equally with the brethren. But the burden of abbotship weighed heavily on the Monk Nikon. Remembering his silent life, first in the Serpukhov Vysotsky Monastery, and then with St. Sergius, he left his abbotship and retired to a special cell. For six years the monastery was led by the Monk Savva of Storozhevsky (+1407).
In 1400, he founded his monastery near Zvenigorod, and the brethren begged the Monk Nikon to again accept abbotship. He agreed, but appointed himself a certain time of silence every day in order to stand alone with God. When rumors spread about the invasion of the Russian land by Khan Edigei (1408), the Monk Nikon earnestly prayed to God for the preservation of the monastery. In a subtle dream, the Moscow saints Peter (+ 1326) and Alexy (+ 1378) with the Monk Sergius appeared to him and told him not to grieve over the destruction of the monastery, which would not be desolate, but would spread even more. The monks left the monastery, seizing shrines and cell things, and when they returned, they saw that their beloved place had been reduced to ashes. But the Monk Nikon did not fall into despondency, but inspired the brethren to new labors. First of all, a wooden church was built in the Name of the Most Holy Life-Giving Trinity and consecrated in 1411 on the day of the repose of St. Sergius, September 25. The monastery was being restored, and the Monk Nikon undertook the construction of a stone church over the tomb of his spiritual father, the Monk Sergius. While digging ditches for the foundation on July 5, 1422, the incorruptible relics of St. Sergius were discovered. With general joy, the holy relics were placed in a new shrine and placed in a wooden church that was moved to a new place (now on this site is a temple in honor of the Descent of the Holy Spirit).
The Monk Nikon erected a new stone church in the Name of the glorified God who helped him in this in the Trinity, in memory and praise of his spiritual father, whose holy relics he transferred to the newly created temple. To decorate the temple, the Monk Nikon invited the best icon painters, the venerable monks Andrei Rublev and Daniil Cherny. Until the end of his life, the Monk Nikon cared about the organization of the Trinity Church. In his dying vision, he was shown the place of his future resting place together with the Monk Sergius. He called the brethren and gave them instructions. Having partaken of the Most Pure Body of Christ and His Precious Blood, the Monk Nikon gave the brethren his last blessing and said: “Go, my soul, to where you are destined to dwell, go with joy: Christ is calling you.” Having made the sign of the cross, Saint Nikon died on November 17, 1426. He was buried near the shrine of St. Sergius.
Under Saint Jonah of Moscow, Hieromonk Pachomius Logothetes wrote the service and life of St. Nikon. Church-wide glorification of the saint by the Russian Church followed at the Moscow Council in 1547. In 1548, a church named after him was built over the tomb of St. Nikon, and in 1623 a new one was built in its place, in which the holy relics of St. Nikon rest in secret.

Nikon was born in 1352 in the city of Yuryev-Polsky, Vladimir region. At a young age, having heard about the angelic life of St. Sergius of Radonezh and wanting to follow him, the saint came to the monk and asked to join the ranks of the monastics.
The Venerable Sergius of Radonezh, seeing in him a future great ascetic and testing his humility and patience, sent Nikon to his disciple the Venerable Afanasy Vysotsky. Here the Monk Nikon learned smart work, studied the Holy Scriptures and excelled in virtue and purity.
Elevated to the rank of hieromonk, St. Nikon returned to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra and became a beloved and close disciple of St. Sergius. Seeing the spiritual maturity and experience of the Monk Nikon, six months before his death in 1392, having gone into seclusion, Sergius appointed him abbot of the Trinity Monastery.
Having become abbot, the Monk Nikon supported everything that was established by the teacher: he loved prayer and fasting, worked equally with the brethren, whom he constantly cared for with love. But he did not remain abbot for long and soon after the death of his teacher he went into seclusion, leaving the leadership of the monastery to the Monk Savva of Storozhevsky. In 1398, having emerged from seclusion, he again returned to the management of the Trinity Monastery.
Under Nikon, the Trinity Monastery was completely destroyed by the troops of Khan Edigei in 1408; only books and sacred vessels were saved. The monk began the restoration of the monastery. During the foundation stone church in the name of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity on July 5, 1422, he found the relics of St. Sergius.
Nikon invited icon painters Daniil Cherny and Andrei Rublev to decorate the temple. Church tradition attributes to the monk Rublev the order “in praise of Sergius of Radonezh” for the famous icon of the Trinity.
After many labors and exploits, the Monk Nikon died on November 30, 1426 and was buried near the shrine of his teacher.
Under Metropolitan Jonah of Moscow, Hieromonk Pachomius Logofetes wrote a life and service to St. Nikon, and in 1547 Metropolitan Macarius established his church-wide veneration. In 1560, a temple in his name was built over the grave. The relics of St. Nikon, resting here under the tomb, are separated from the shrine of the great Sergius by one stone wall.

They were barbarians of the country, captivating them, and having reached the blessed father’s monastery, they gave everything that they had gained to fire, but turned away from there to blessed Nikon and the other brothers, giving way to the coming wrath. Having left the barbarian, the blessed one returns to the monastery: and he sees the place he loved and his father’s labors were burned with fire. What is it not fitting for that blessed soul to welcome the sad ones then? in vain, the tree of his holy father is worthy of memory, all trampled upon by the lawless; but do not fall into sadness, do not become discouraged or weakened from the feat: but Abiy rises courageously. Just as some good warrior, after the defeat of the opposing forces, will not give in to the end of the enemy, but rises courageously and, howling together, constitutes victory: in the same way, the saints, the good shepherd, gather the scattered sheep of his disciples, having scattered the predators of their souls. And first of all he will erect a church of wood in the name of the Holy and Life-Giving Trinity. At eight o'clock he mounts the cell and arranges services according to their order. There are also many monks and ordinary people from the surrounding places, not a small number, rejoicing at the coming of the great one. The venerable one received this with paternal mercy, like a beloved child, worthy of every providence and everything, being like a child-loving father, he did this to them: and he instituted useful teachings for everyone, offering an abundant spiritual meal, and created the best dispensation for his child - to cleanse the soul and Enlighten the inner person. Therefore, he strives for time to erect a church on the stone over the tomb of his father. And from everywhere he gathers architects and masons, mudra and tile makers; and, by the haste of God, the beautiful church will soon be erected in the name of the glorified God who hastened to the Trinity, in memory and praise of his father. And having decorated this with many kindnesses, he desperately needed to decorate it with signatures. But we forbid ourselves from certain people, who have acquired poverty because of their sorrow. But then, with desire, we will run, eager to see with our eyes the church, decorated in every possible way. And soon the painters gathered together, perfect in virtues: Danil in the name of his companion Andrea, and the others with them. And they are related to the matter; and greatly enriched it with various signatures, as if it were able to surprise all those who saw it. And as if everything had been accomplished, they departed as one from the monastery and the city of Moscow, saved by God, we call Andronikov. And there the church in the name of the All-Merciful Savior, decorated with signatures, left the last handwriting as a memory for itself. And having stayed a little while, humble Andrei, left this life and went to the Lord: the same was his companion Danil. Both, having lived well and being great in old age, came to a good end. Whenever Danil wanted to renounce physical union, Abiye sees his beloved Andrea, calling him in joy. He, as soon as he saw him, was filled with great joy, and to the brethren who were coming, he told them the coming of his companion, and gave up his spirit. The present brethren saw there the repose of these: and from this they reasonably knew that for this sake the blessed Nikon hastened to decorate the Church of the Holy Trinity with signatures, for which he understood the spiritual repose of these men: and therefore he gave him great thanks. We, having left the hedgehog about these things, may return to the past. When Blessed Nikon saw the church, he signed it, greatly rejoicing in spirit, saying: “I thank You, Lord, and I glorify Your most holy name, because You did not despise my petition, but gave gifts to an unworthy one, so that all my eyes can see.” It is not about external great wisdom that it is joyful, but from grace, I receive a comforting light in my heart, this is spoken. He is sweet in words, wise in mind and adorned with all images: a person grows rich in the image of God, filled with all these. It’s amazing to see someone who has diligence in life about God: having food is abstinence, but wealth is nothing to acquire, sacred and old, wearing hair rags and clothing that delights more than fluffy vestments. From youth to a mile, neither decline in old age, nor enjoying various foods, nor exhaustion for the sake of the body, change the image of the vestment. Even if the monk does his virtues in secret, he wants to hide himself from people, but the Lord, like a lamp, shows this to everyone: so that others will be guided in his deeds and will receive the zeal of the virtuous path. After the accomplishment of the Church, having lived a short time through old age, and through many fasting labors, and through illnesses that took place over time, my body weakened and became extremely exhausted. And he understood his departure to the Lord: he commanded to call the brethren. Numb, who soon arrived and left the bed weeping, seeing her father, she was extremely exhausted. And now, fathers and brothers and children beloved in Christ, I pray to you: remain in all my words that I have given you. Keep these things in your minds and keep them, holding the faith to the right and living piously.” With these words and other similar ones, the saints confirmed the brethren, punishing the salvation of the soul. Abiye keep quiet. And it was quickly revealed to him, before his bodily permission, the rest prepared with the blessed father. He, after a short silence, said to the disciple standing before him: “Take me to that bright dwelling, where my father has prepared the prayers.” And keep silent again. And Abiye announces his end: “I am,” he says, “brother, we release you from the bondage of the flesh, and I go to the Lord.” Leave the last blessing for them, and say to yourself: “Depart, my soul, where you have prepared yourself: go rejoicing, Christ is calling you.” And so the saints, having made the sign of the cross, gave up his honest and hard-working soul with prayer to the Lord in the summer of 6938, the month of Noemri at 17, alive in that honorable abbotship 7 to 30 in the summer, having sinned nothing from the feat and the good flock entrusted to him in Christ forbid, and strive towards the highest. To Blessed Nikon, still in this life, I sent one from the brethren, named Akakia, as one from the entire monastery, for the sake of need. He disobeyed, saying: “I have not renounced this,” saying, “The world that I have walked around even cities.” And I prayed a lot to the blessed one, but he did not turn to obedience. Follow the reverend’s speech to him: “Be careful, brother, when you find yourself there by your will and accept the reward of disobedience.” After the repose of blessed Nikon, the prophesied Akaki, having consigned to oblivion the prophesied saints, goes into the prophesied whole. And so the judgment prophesied by the saint befell him: having lost his mind, he was quickly brought to the monastery by the brothers. And blessed Nikon appeared to him, trembling his staff in his hand, abhorrent to him, saying: “O Akaki! Why, having renounced the world, go around towns and villages? He began to tremble and was overcome with fear. And for several days I suffered for him, and every day I brought him to the race of St. Sergius, and to the tomb of the blessed Nikon, praying quickly, asking for forgiveness. Likewise, the brethren who pray for her, and so, by the grace of Christ and the prayers of the saints, receive healing: and become healthy and sensible. Sia himself told his question many times, with many sobs.

A certain man from a great merchant, named Simeon, happened to fall into a great illness, because for many days he tasted nothing. And so, oppressed by the green disease, he can move no further. During the nights alone I will remember the miracles of Blessed Sergius: God works great healings, for his sake; I began to pray in my mind and say: “Father, Holy One of God, Saint Sergius! help me and save me from this illness. Remember, when you were with us in life, how much love you had for my parents. In the same way, show me grace and give me relief from this illness.” Sia and ina have prostrated many prayers. Then the Venerable Sergius appeared to him with blessed Nikon, a burning lamp, and all the seven sleeping in his house. Simeon saw the arrival of the saints, but did not know the Venerable Sergius, but only Nikon alone and from that reason: “he is the same,” he said, “you call on Sergius, he is.” He wanted to get up, but he couldn’t say anything lower. The saints of the hundred are near him and are marked by his cross, which he carries in his hand. He also commands blessed Nikon, as if he also signifies him. Nikon, let’s take the icon, I’m near his bed, and so are his banners. This same icon was given to him for blessing from Blessed Nikon: and he kept it in his house, for the sake of remembrance, for the sake of the saint, for love. But let’s leave this aside, let’s touch on what’s presented. And therefore he took him by the hair of his head and crushed him, as if he had torn off his skin. And both are invisible and fast. Simeon, who was awakened by the vision, thought that the sickness had gone away from him and the saint had given him health. Rising at that hour, make 15 bows, giving thanks to God and to His saint, the venerable father and miracle worker.

The priest of the same monastery, named Matthew, remained on the archimandrite in the city. And after he stayed there for some time, he fell into illness: and he took him to the Holy Trinity Monastery: and through the prayers of the blessed Father Sergius and Nikon, he received healing. But we will escape with the glory of the rank, as happens in many others, and again returns to the foretold monastery for archimandriteship, as there he received honor and worship from everyone. And again, after a few times, I fell into illness. He was taken to the monastery and laid at the tomb of the saints, by the grace of God and the prayers of the saints, father, receive healing. But even so he does not suffer punishment, but still returns to the foretold archimandriteship. This happens many times, and as if after a few times, I fall into a serious illness, worse than the first. And when I spoke to him, he saw himself come to the monastery of the saints. And blessed Nikon took him off, shaking the shepherd’s rod in his hand, denouncing him and saying to him with rage: “Why, O hypocrite, when we are overcome by illness, come to us more carefully: having received healing, do you go away again? but from now on remain there, where you loved to live, without ever coming to us.” Having woken up from the vision of the prophesied archimandrite, he was overcome with fear and trembling, recognizing his sin, as if his father had left the monastery of the saints. Abiye departs to the monastery with much weeping and sobbing: promising other things to God and the Reverend Father, that he would never leave there until his death. She told the brethren about the merciful punishment of Blessed Nikon and, having suffered a little illness, reposed in peace in repentance.

Text of prayer for illnesses
Reverend Nikon did not feel very comfortable in the rank of abbot. Therefore, at one time he lived alone. But then he returned to active work again and built the Zvenigorod Monastery.
After the death of this holy elder, they began to pray to him for protection from diseases. This is what the text of the prayer looks like:
Our Reverend and Blessed Father Nikon, imitator and associate and heir of the gifts of our God-bearing father Sergius, who left his venerable relics in your hands, just as Elijah cured his in the hands of Elisha, left them hidden by you in the earth, not like burial, but in proof of incorruption, and by you, revealed in the manifestation of miracles and in the most abundant outpouring of the source of healing. To you, who lives together with him in Heaven, and who rests blessedly with him on earth, with love we extend our heartfelt desires and words of prayer, offering you our infirmities and sorrows, and the needs of our souls and bodies. Accept our unworthy prayer and with your bright and strong prayer cleanse it, complete it and lift it up to the Most Merciful and Greatly Gifted Master, our Lord and God Jesus Christ, may he bless and preserve our country and this holy Abode in peace and silence.
