What is Lent
One of the main holidays in the Christian world is Easter Sunday.
This day, according to the Christian religion, is a symbol of goodness and rebirth. But at the same time, all believers know what tragic events preceded this Bright Day. That is why the pre-holiday period, which is known to everyone as Great Lent, is filled with abstinence and reflection, which contributes to the purification of the soul. Of all the Orthodox fasts, Great Lent is the longest. Its duration is seven weeks. The most significant is the last week, which is called “Holy Week”. At this time, believers should observe strict rules regarding nutrition and behavior. It is believed that this period, if all requirements are met, opens a stairway to heaven for Christians.
In order to properly go through the period of Lent, not to succumb to temptations and excesses, you need to take into account important points:
- You should clearly understand what Great Lent is. To do this, you must first study special religious literature. It should be understood that fasting is not only about changes in diet. The main thing is to conquer yourself and learn to control all your actions. Overcoming sin means overcoming your passions and shortcomings.
- It is definitely recommended to talk to your priest before starting Lent. A priest can help you get in the right mood and give useful advice.
The entire history of Lent is based on the following principles:
- The spirit rules over the flesh and rules over physical needs. It is important to control your weaknesses and learn to deny yourself them.
- Quitting bad habits, in particular alcohol and smoking.
- Strictly monitor your own emotions, actions, words and thoughts.
- Fill your soul with goodwill and tolerance towards people around you, get rid of evil and resentment.
Prayers for those who are fasting for the first time
During fasting, a person completely changes the way of his life, and this significantly affects his well-being, work, and daily affairs. However, habits do not want to go away, and fighting them becomes more and more difficult every day. It is especially difficult for those people who have decided to fast for the first time to subordinate their desires.
During fasting, relaxation is allowed for those who are sick, for children, pregnant women and travelers. It is important to understand that following a strict fasting diet is not an indicator of spiritual purity and righteousness. Refusal of protein and fatty foods should cleanse not so much the body as thoughts and feelings. Some people confuse fasting with dieting. The purpose of fasting is to free yourself from envy, hatred, and sinful thoughts, and not to cleanse the body of extra pounds and toxins.
What should those who understand the true value of Lent, but find it difficult to withstand the restrictions, do? In this case, you need to rely on the holy word. It is prayer that helps overcome the feeling of discomfort that a person begins to experience when he restricts himself in food and his usual lifestyle. During prayer, an understanding comes of how small, fleeting and insignificant the fussy desires of a person thirsting for wealth, fame or honors are. Life is very fleeting, what will those people who did not do good and did not leave behind a bright memory take with them to heaven? Understanding the highest truths of existence comes during prayer and turning to God.
What prayers are read before the start of Lent?
Before the beginning of Lent, you can read prayers of a wide variety of directions. It is important to choose those prayer appeals that are closest in spirit to a particular believer.
Repentance prayers
Before Lent, it is recommended to read prayers of repentance. The essence of prayer requests of this type is that the believer turns to the Lord with a request to forgive him all sins in life, known and unknown. The importance of such prayers before Great Lent is explained by the fact that by praying, a person prepares for the cleansing of the soul, which, if all the rules are followed, will occur in the period before Easter.
It is important to remember that the effectiveness of prayers of repentance is inextricably linked to their repeated repetition. Therefore, due to the busyness of modern people, short prayer appeals should be used.
For example, you can use the following text:
“I, the Servant of God (my own name), know and understand that I am in the hands of Your, Almighty, great mercy. With this understanding, I entrust to You, my God, my soul and body, control my actions, feelings and words. Only You can see my entire life, my outcome, only you understand the torment of my soul, you see what awaits me on the path of life, You see my death and the day of rest of my body and soul. Show your great mercy to me, Great Lover of Humanity. Forgive me for the malice that remains in the corners of my soul, cleanse my soul from unkind feelings and thoughts. I repent of all the bad things I have done and sincerely pray for forgiveness. Help me, Lord, correct my life, guide me on the righteous path. Grant me every opportunity to live in accordance with the commandments of God, avoid temptations and distance myself from my enemies. I glorify Your Holy Name. Amen"
Prayer confession
Before Great Lent, all people are advised to read the prayer of confession. Very often, a prayer appeal is read before the prayer of repentance. It can be read in any form.
This prayer appeal is very personal, after it there is always relief. It is very difficult to give an example of a prayer-confession, because it should express the most intimate.
Prayer blessing
As a rule, prayers of blessing are read before Lent by a mother who blesses her children. The importance of such appeals is difficult to overestimate. The main principle of such prayer is to create a protective barrier around the child. Such protection will not allow you to get into unpleasant life situations and will allow you to guide your child along the righteous path and live according to the commandments of God.
The prayer can be said in your own words, but you can also use the following text:
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, hear me, Thy sinful and unworthy servant. Save and preserve my children, guide them along the righteous path. Forgive all their sins, voluntary and involuntary, help them to do only good deeds. Enlighten, Lord, my children with your light, for the salvation of the soul and the healing of the body. Bless my children, Lord, on their life path everywhere: in study, in work, and on the road. Protect your children from all the dangers they will encounter along the way in life. Amen".
Prayers for Lent by day to read at home, part 1
Lent is an important time for every Orthodox Christian. This is a time of prayer, so clergy advise reading prayers every morning throughout Lent. They will help you tune in to a better day and become closer to God.
What prayers to read during Lent at home
The meaning of fasting is not just a refusal of meat and dairy foods, it is self-restraint, that is, a voluntary refusal of everything that makes up a noticeable part of our earthly life.
Prayer of Ephraim the Syrian
Lord and Master of my life, do not give me the spirit of idleness, despondency, covetousness and idle talk. Grant the spirit of chastity, humility, patience and love to Thy servant. To her, Lord, King, grant me to see my sins and not condemn my brother, for blessed are you forever and ever. Amen.
At the end of the prayer, 12 times in a row you need to say “God, cleanse me, a sinner,” and bow to the waist.
Read the prayer of Ephraim the Syrian two more times and bow to the ground.

Prayers for Easter are an integral part of holiday rituals and services. Easter week is believed to have a strong energetic atmosphere. This gives Easter prayers for health and well-being special power and concentration.

Holy God, Holy Almighty, Holy Immortal, be merciful to us.
What prayers cannot be read during Lent?
You can often come across the opinion that during Lent you cannot read akathists, except for one or several days.
On Saturday of the fifth week of Pentecost, in all Orthodox churches the Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos is sung and praise to the Mother of God is heard.
Also during special Lenten services - Passion, which are served four times during fasting, the Akathist to the Divine Passion of Christ is read.
But as such, there is no prohibition on reading certain prayers during Lent in the church charter. There is a tradition of paying more attention to prayers of repentance during Lent. But a Christian can read akathists privately (that is, at home).
Morning prayers for Lent
Lent is an important time for every Orthodox Christian. This is a time of prayer, so clergy advise reading prayers every morning throughout Lent. They will help you tune in to a better day and become closer to God.
There are three important church prohibitions for Lent, but they make little sense if they are not accompanied by prayers. Every morning you need to get up with good thoughts. This doesn't always work out. Morning prayers will help fix this.
Prayer to all saints for patience and strength
“I pray to the forefathers, great martyrs and all the saints to give me patience and fortitude to survive all today’s hardships, get ready for work and accept all the hardships of this world with dignity. Pray to God, holy fathers and mothers. Pray for our health, for peace, so that we can be like you in fasting and abstinence, in humility and kindness, in the strength of our faith. Amen".
This prayer can be read not only in the morning, but also during difficult periods of any fast, when you want it to end as soon as possible, when you have no strength and want to indulge in worldly weaknesses. We should not forget that we are all human, and the saints were the same as us, but they had unshakable faith.
Prayer to the Holy Trinity
“Father, Son and Holy Spirit, give me strength to start this day and to live it according to the laws of God, with a smile on my face and with love in my heart. Help me, Holy Trinity, bless me for good deeds, deliver me from filth. Grant me forgiveness, merciful God. May this day pass for me and my loved ones without troubles and without mental and physical suffering. Amen".
Lent and Easter are mainly dedicated to the Lord Jesus Christ, who is part of the Holy Trinity. This prayer can begin or end with the reading of the Lord's Prayer. These two prayers can be read every morning, not only during fasting, but on any other morning in general.
Prayer to the Mother of God during Lent
“I ask you, most pure Virgin, cover me with your veil on this day of Lent. Strengthen my faith and give me the strength to accept everything that happens to me today. Pray to God for us sinners. Don’t let me be weak enough to break God’s law or offend a person. Help me, Virgin Mary, to live the day without fear, to overcome the spirit of idleness and not to let bad thoughts fetter my heart. Amen".
The Virgin Mary is a symbol of holiness and humility. The Mother of God will always come to the rescue in difficult times, so read this morning prayer on the most difficult days of fasting or at the very beginning in order to gain confidence and not break the rules.
Previously, we told you what you can and cannot do during Lent in 2022. Try to follow the instructions and rules in order to get closer to God and earn his forgiveness.
What you need to do before the start of Lent: 5 important points
The Church prepares believers for Lent gradually. Spiritually, by reading certain passages from the Gospel on Sundays; and physically, gradually changing the diet during the continuous and meat-free weeks. But you need to do something yourself - for example, plan a vacation before Easter. What? Yes. Here is a short checklist of necessary preparations that will make your fast more mindful.
Create your menu in advance
To think less about food and more about the soul. If you decide to fast, it is better to think through your diet in advance and buy the necessary products. This will make it much easier to get into the rhythm of fasting and not be hungry. Usually these are nuts, honey, fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, cereals and pasta. It is better to discuss the severity of fasting with a priest who knows to some extent your personal life circumstances.
Prepare to read the Gospel
The Orthodox have an excellent tradition of rereading one of the four Gospels (or even all four) every Lent. You can choose any: from Matthew, Luke, Mark or John. The Gospel is truly an Eternal Book. It is full of metaphors, parables and direct stories about the life of Jesus Christ, so every time you re-read it, you discover something new. To make it clearer, find the text in the Russian Synodal translation. If you are reading for the first time, you can also stock up on interpretations. For example, interpretations of St. Theophylact of Bulgaria, John Chrysostom or the Orthodox Explanatory Bible by Lopukhin.
Find the text of the Great Canon of Andrew of Crete
You can download it for free to your gadget or buy it in paper form at the church store. Of course, it will be read by a priest during Lent (as many as two times). But let's be honest - half of it is either inaudible or incomprehensible. And the canon is special, repentant. It is better to read it silently together with the clergy. Then the text will be perceived more consciously. By the way, this “life hack” works with any church texts. For example, with the sequence of the liturgy, which can also be kept before your eyes during the service.
Learn the prayer of Ephraim the Syrian
This prayer is read at almost every service during Lent. It is one of its symbols, a request to God to grant change to the person praying - and this is one of the tasks of fasting. Here is the text of the prayer:
Lord and Master of my life, do not give me the spirit of idleness, despondency, covetousness and idle talk.
Grant the spirit of chastity, humility, patience and love to Thy servant.
To her, Lord, King, grant me to see my sins and not condemn my brother, for blessed are you forever and ever. Amen.
Plan a vacation before Easter
To better understand and feel the joy of Easter, you need to attend the services that precede it. Ideally, this is the entire Holy Week, but the “minimum” is Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Divine services are held in the morning and evening, it will be difficult to combine with work, so if possible, take a vacation for these days.
Read penitential canons, akathists, prayers during Lent
What canons of repentance are read during Lent, the reading of akathists. I think many Christian believers will be interested in what to read in the prayer book, what canons are read to the saints.
Akathists are not read during Lent, except for one Akathist:
Divine Passion of Christ, it is read on Sundays during Lent.
In 2022 these are March 17, March 24, March 31 and April 14; in 2020 these will be other days of the week.
Most akathists praise God, we sing songs of joy to God, with the onset of Great Lent, it is not customary to praise God and the Saints.
Be sure to read the morning prayer rule and the evening prayer rule in the morning.
During the first week of Great Lent, the Great Penitential Canon of St. Andrew of Crete is read.
On Saturday of the 5th week of Great Lent, an akathist to the Mother of God is read.
On the 4 Sundays of Great Lent, the Akathist to the Passion of Christ is read, in addition to Palm and the Annunciation, which is called the Passion.
April 10th - Maryino Standing. Read All the canons of Andrei Kritsky.
Conversations on the Holy Pentecost - The Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian is read every Wednesday and Friday during Lent.
Throughout Great Lent, the repentant prayer of Ephraim the Syrian is read.
What we ask for in a prayer of repentance: The prayer of Ephraim the Syrian is a prayer of repentance; it lists all the main sins for which we need to repent.
Spirit of Idleness: The root of all sins is idleness, time wasted on self. Without engaging in our development and the gifts of our soul.
Dejection: modern society, being in a spirit of idleness, then falls into despondency and is unable to do any good or pray to God.
Lust for power: this is the love of power, to have power in a team or in a family. This sin is facilitated by the sins of despondency and the spirit of idleness.
Idle talk: Swear words, empty talk leading to condemnation and insult.
Chastity: spiritual control over one's emotions and over one's body. Moral purity in deeds, words and thoughts.
Humility: The fruit of chastity, a person stops considering himself better than others. The soul is cleansed of pride and selfishness.
Patience: This is when an emotional person becomes intolerant and is quick to judge and condemns his neighbor and is quick to judge.
Spirit of Love: Love is the most important gift and the main goal of our spiritual works. God is love!
Repentant prayer of Ephraim the Syrian
“Lord and Master of my life, do not give me the spirit of idleness, despondency, covetousness and idle talk.
Grant the spirit of chastity, humility, patience and love to Thy servant.
To her, Lord, King, grant me to see my sins and not condemn my brother, for blessed are you forever and ever. Amen".
On April 7 and April 21, the akathist is not read at all, during Lent
Throughout Great Lent, the New Testament of the Gospel of John is read.

Before going to bed, the believer should turn his heartfelt words to the Guardian Angel, thanking him for his help and intercession. This is the most wonderful time to open your heart and turn to God the Father in prayer. Lenten prayer to Jesus Christ should be permeated with a feeling of gratitude and enlightenment. Morning prayers
Find out what awaits you today - Horoscope for today for all zodiac signs
The morning of the first day of Lent should begin with an appeal to Jesus Christ and the Holy Trinity. They are addressed with special words; such prayers are called initial prayers. With these prayers, the believer wants to show his readiness to test himself by fasting, to understand its meaning, and to be imbued with the words and deeds of Jesus. This is a test of your spiritual strength.
The morning begins with a prayer to Christ, a psalm of David, the third prayer of St. Macarius the Great, praises and songs to the Mother of God. This is a list of basic prayers on how to pray on the first day of Lent and before Easter.
Why is this prayer read during services during the Nativity Fast?
A clergyman’s handbook: “Comparing the Lenten service with the service of the Nativity Fast, it should be noted that according to the Church Charter, on some of its days it is necessary to sing “Alleluia,” that is, the structure of the service on these days exactly corresponds to the Lenten one: the hours, the prayer of Ephraim the Syrian, bows. In total, according to the Charter, “Alleluia” is supposed to be sung eleven times during the Nativity Fast: November 19, 26 and 29 and December 1, 2, 3, 8, 14, 16, 18 and 19. Divine services on these days, as well as during Lent, are essentially repentant in nature.
During the Nativity Fast there are also a number of solemn services. The alternation of holiday and penitential days is the essential feature of the divine service of the Nativity Fast, distinguishing it from other days of the church year, and especially from Great Lent.”
Evening prayers for the suddenly deceased
Let's supplement the list of prayers with a mention of Flavian. Flavian is a perspicacious priest who does not allow death, the hero of the books of Archpriest Alexander Torik. Flavian is almost a saint and a very interesting person, although he is not an archbishop, and not a Catholic archimandrite, but simply an Orthodox priest Flavian with a big belly, looking like a lion. In the book about Flavian, you can read an explanation of how to survive and not be overwhelmed by the grief associated with a sudden death, a deceased person, if you have to die or you are on the verge of dying or becoming a sudden victim of an attack. Here is a prayer that will help you not to drown in grief
“O Lord and our God, do not forget Your servant (Your) (name) who died in faith and hope for eternal life. You are the Good and Loving Lord of all people, you forgive sins and destroy the lies of the lion, forgive and forget all his sins and mistakes, accidental and intentional, deliver him from eternal torment and do not let him float in the flames of hell, give him the sacrament and joy of Your eternal joys prepared for all who love You. Even if he (she) sinned, he did not depart from You, believed without a doubt in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the Holy Trinity, You, the Lord in the Holy Trinity, One and Glorified, and until his last breath he confessed the Holy Trinity Orthodoxy. Be merciful to him (her), reward at least for faith instead of works, rest with all Your saints, as a Generous God: after all, there is no person who has lived life and not sinned. You, Lord, He is Sinless, Your truth is the Truth in all ages, only You are the God of mercy and generosity, May we all, living and dead, give eternal glory to You, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen".

Prayer of praise to the Lord God (small doxology)
Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.
Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of truth, Who is everywhere and fills everything, Receptacle of all goodness and Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all impurity, and save, O Merciful One, our souls.
Prayers before EasterI believe, Lord, but You confirm my faith. I hope, Lord, but You strengthen my hope. I loved You, Lord, but You purify my love and ignite it. I am sorry, Lord, but do it so that I may increase my repentance. I honor You, my Creator, Lord, I sigh for You, I call upon You. Guide me with Your wisdom, protect and strengthen me. I commend to You, my God, my thoughts, may they come from You. Let my deeds be in Your name, and let my desires be in Your will. Illuminate my mind, strengthen my will, cleanse my body, sanctify my soul. May I see my sins, may I not be seduced by pride, help me overcome temptations. May I praise You all the days of the life that You have given me. Amen.
Prayers before Easter
God, my God! Give my heart ignorance of passions and lift my eye above the madness of the world, from now on make my life not to please them and grant me pity for those who persecute me. For Your joy in sorrows is known, my God, and a straight soul will receive it, but its fate comes from Your face and there is no diminishment of its bliss. Lord Jesus Christ, my God, make my ways straight on earth.
Evening prayers to the Guardian Angel
You can pray to the Angel - Intercessor, Helper and Guardian - in your own words, sincerely, simply and at any time. Reading a prayer to your personal intercessor helps both children and adults. Don’t forget to light a candle when praying - this is not necessary, a candle is a tradition, but a candle is also a symbol of prayer.
Holy Angel, accompanying my sinful soul and my passionate life, do not leave me, a sinner, under any circumstances, do not leave me because of cases of my intemperance. Do not let the evil demon possess me through the violence of my mortal body; hold me by my weak hand and guide me on the path of salvation. Oh, holy Angel of God, guardian and patron of my sinful soul and unclean body, forgive me everything with which I offended you all the days of my life, and everything I sinned with this past night, cover me in the coming day, and save me from any temptation, so that I do not anger God with any sin, and pray to the Lord for me, so that He will confirm me in His fear, and see me worthy as a servant of His grace. Amen.
Prayers for children
It is very important for children to call on the name of God and their Guardian Angel, helper and intercessor, who is given to every person in holy Baptism. A sick child, if his canine tooth hurts, can also pray, but his health must also be treated. Let the child first read the Lord's Prayer, and then this prayer from the rule. This prayer also helps with pain if a fang tooth hurts.
To the Angel of Christ, my holy guardian and patron of my soul and body, forgive me all that I have sinned this day, and deliver me from all the wickedness of the enemy who opposes me and grant me health, and in no way sin. I will anger my God; but pray for the sinful and unworthy servant, that I may be worthy of showing the goodness and mercy of the All-Holy Trinity and the Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ and all the saints. Amen
Also, a child can ask the study assistant of St. Sergius of Radonezh for support and help with canine pain. There is a similar prayer to Alexy, Metropolitan of Moscow.
“O venerable and God-bearing Father Sergei of Radonezh! Look upon us mercifully, and lead us to the heights of heaven, those who are devoted to the earth. Strengthen our cowardice and confirm us in faith, so that we undoubtedly hope to receive all the good things from the mercy of the Lord God through your prayers. Ask, O Saint Sergei, through your intercession the gift of understanding science, and through your prayers that help us all (with the help of your prayers), grant that on the day of the Last Judgment we will be delivered from the right parts of the land, and will be able to hear the blessed voice of the Lord Christ: “Come, blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” Amen"
