What prayers to read to Moses Ugrin against drunkenness, for protection and intercession

Sinful desires easily take over a person. They fill the body and pollute the mind and soul. To avoid temptation, you must have a strong will and lead an ascetic lifestyle. But not all people have these qualities. To overcome destructive desires in oneself, Orthodoxy includes prayers about fornication. One must pray not only against sinful human passions, but also against the demons whom these desires betray to him and try in every possible way to seduce him. We must pray seriously every day, especially when sin comes too close. The stronger the temptation, the more you need to pray.

Why is fornication sinful?

If we talk about strong prayer against fornication, then there is none.
Wait to be disappointed, close the article and stop searching. Such prayer lives within us. The more we pray, the faster we receive deliverance from the passion of fornication. Why is this passion sinful? After all, a person does not kill anyone, does not steal, does not do anything bad, in fact.

Fornication is sexual promiscuity. Could she be right? The comparison of a harlot woman to a public glass is appropriate here. Imagine being forced to drink from one. And it is not clear who touched its edge with their lips before. What if it was a homeless person or a sick person? Which hands touched the glass: clean or dirty? This is unknown to us. It's disgusting, isn't it?

Fornication is much more disgusting. This is an abomination to God. After all, the Lord gave man a couple and commanded him to be fruitful and multiply. Do not enter into relationships with multiple people of the opposite sex. But only with one or with one.

Spiritual and physical levels of sin

Adultery is not just physical sexual contact. Intimacy outside the marital bed, like violation of the rest of the Lord’s Commandments, deprives a person of God’s grace, which leads to the collapse of normal life.

Today, “civil marriages” are very common, when people live with each other for some time before entering into a marital union, engaging in sexual relations. The Church calls this behavior fornication, and cites statistics where couples who do not cohabit before marriage are less likely to divorce. The logic here is as follows: the mind, unclouded by physical desire, better sees all facets of a person’s personality, which allows you to soberly evaluate your partner.

Often, the betrayal of one spouse gives rise to the revenge of the second. Women, as a rule, forgive betrayal faster, but they cannot completely forget it.

Children suffer no less from the sin of their parents. The mother, mired in worries, pays little attention to them, and the father may even leave the family. At the same time, the latter often takes the child with him, which further destroys the woman from the inside.

The sin of adultery can cause divorce

The sinfulness of adultery

Sexual intercourse has never been prohibited by the Church as long as it occurs in a legal union. The Gospel, on the contrary, calls for regular intimacy, so that abstinence does not lead to unnecessary temptations. Since marriage unites spouses spiritually, sex is a vibrant experience for them that strengthens the family. However, outside the marital bed, intimate relationships become a sin. The pleasure received by a traitor is considered a manifestation of weakness of spirit.

Outside the marital bed, intimate relationships become a sin

Causes

The factors that push a person to adultery were described by Abba Isaiah. In his work “Fatherland,” published in the second half of the 4th century, the religious writer named the following reasons:

  • empty talk beyond measure;
  • ambition;
  • habit of sleeping for a long time;
  • predilection for beautiful objects or clothing.

One passion gives rise to another, and in order not to be tempted again, you should give up sources of pleasure. Author's advice

Consequences and punishment

A person who has sinned suffers spiritually and physically. The sin of adultery has dire consequences:

  • the family is destroyed;
  • a person becomes a prisoner of his base desires and becomes like an animal;
  • he loses his status, falls in the eyes of his neighbors;
  • until death, the sinner is doomed to beg forgiveness for his immoral actions;
  • peace of mind is lost;
  • Often the Lord deprives a traitor of his mind;
  • the libertine is doomed to loneliness;
  • diseases appear that lead to early death;
  • love, trust, and mutual understanding leave the marital relationship;
  • thoughts become unclean, lustful;
  • an adulterer is equated to a thief, since he steals family happiness.

According to Orthodox canons, immoral intimate relationships are punishable by excommunication from the Church for a period of 15 years. Until the traitor repents, he is forbidden to undergo the Sacrament of the Eucharist. The adulterer is abandoned by God's grace, which makes him suffer morally and physically. The sinner becomes the real punishment for himself, since the family breaks up, the soul and body suffer, and the conscience is constantly tormented.

Can fornicators begin the sacraments of the Church?

There is a very famous priest Dmitry Smirnov. He runs his own blog and answers people's questions. Do you want to know what Father Dmitry says about whether fornicators can receive communion?

He asks: “Why? Why does a person who does not want to change anything in his life need a connection with God? To be in mortal sin and unite with the Savior is impossible.”

Fornication is internal suicide. Let's imagine that a killer came to confess to a priest. An ordinary killer who kills people for money. And asks permission to take communion. Will the priest allow him to the Sacrament? Knowing that he will leave the church and go on another mission? What's wrong with that? An ordinary job that pays good money.

The reader will now twirl his finger at his temple and say: “We compared... The murder of a person and cohabitation.” Cohabitation is the same as murder, only of oneself. This is a violation of God's law. Just like murder is a violation of the commandment.

According to church canons, fornicators must be excommunicated from communion for 15 years. Just for one such sin. For example, a woman stayed with a man for a romantic night. When do nights like this happen regularly? Can fornicators approach the Chalice and accept the Body and Blood of Christ in this case?

Is there an Orthodox prayer against fornication? We'll talk about this very soon.

Sermon on the day of memory of St. Moisei Ugrin

Venerable Moses Ugrin

I greet all of you, my beloved flock, on the holy holiday of Sunday. Today is a holiday in memory of the Venerable Moses the Hungarian, wonderworker of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. He rests with his incorrupt relics in the nearby caves of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. We heard his wonderful life. How he defeated prodigal demonic passion. How he was captured as a monk of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, and how in captivity a Polish woman, a depraved young woman, was seduced by him, and how she mocked him, trying to seduce him into her lust. She was blinded by her lust. This was not love, this was lust. Just like today’s youth, now it is not love, but lust, the obsession with meat, the obsession with the human body. And so it was then that the monk endured. Moses suffered severe trials: she undressed him, and undressed herself in front of him, and made him drunk with expensive wines, and put him in bed with her - she did all the abominations that are even embarrassing to listen to, as the Monk Nestor the Chronicler describes to us in the Lives of the Saints. Yes, you, woman, must know all your sins, your possessed being, when lust torments you, when you yourself, insane, climb the wall, and that’s all. Your condition of many is almost ninety-nine percent. There are very few people who live in cleanliness.

And the Monk Moses prayed, and the Monk Moses endured, and the Monk Moses cried out: “I have cried to the Lord, and the Lord will hear me.” The Monk Moses knew: he was a monk, dedicated to God, virginity, purity - and there should be no stinking fornication. He was faithful to God. And how wonderfully he said: “Who was saved by listening to a woman? Never". The woman Eve only seduced Adam; the woman created other temptations all around in the history of the Old Testament. Herod listened to the woman and killed John the Baptist. Your sins are all around, women, yours. Read carefully the life and thoughts of the Monk Moses.

And how the Monk Moses endured: she castrated him in rage that she could not take possession of him. The Monk Moses almost died from loss of blood, and then walked with a stick all his life, but he won. Just as he predicted a premature, inglorious death for this wicked Polish king, so for this woman, for her wickedness, her death was grave, her death was shameful.

And the venerable Moses, the Lord gave, returned to the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, was a great saint of God, labored, defeated the demon, and helped many brothers who were overcome by the demonic flame of carnal passions. And he saved many from death even after his death, when he lay with his incorruptible relics in the caves of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

The Monk John the Long-Suffering also fought hard. They lie side by side in almost the same passage of the corridor of the Lavra Caves. A brother came to him, he gave a part of the relics - the bone of the Monk Moses: “Apply it to yourself, and the war of prodigy will leave you.” The Monk Moses helped a lot of people - he himself is tempted, and maybe he can help those who are tempted. He helped and helps those who pray while overwhelmed by lustful passion. I often say: “No one is guaranteed against this demon of fornication.” Those false righteous people, only imaginary in appearance, say: “No, no, no! Doesn’t possess me.” The demon of fornication possesses everyone: schema-monks, and patriarchs, and metropolitans, and archpriests, and priests, and Jews, and laymen - the demon of fornication possesses everyone. Everyone will stumble during this ordeal. Who among you has passed by the demon of fornication? Well, at least raise your hand for me. It overwhelms everyone. “From my youth, many passions have fought me,” sigh, “but stand up for me and save me, my Savior.” If we do not suffer in body, we suffer in soul. I am especially afraid when we defile children with mental fornication, mentally defile each other, boys and girls, look at them with lust and defile them. Children especially, especially young creatures, suffer from this, from our disgusting, prodigal views and thoughts. We need to take care of this. Do not cause torment to your neighbors. Let the Reverend Moses be an example to us all. Many come to the temple not to pray, but to look at the priests and monks. I remember in Odessa when I was in the monastery, one came. My God, what does she look like! And she shouts: “I was with the general, with the admiral, with the sailors, I want a monk...” Well, she had to be sent to a mental hospital. She went crazy and went to the violent department after these thoughts about the monks. And they look at the monks lustfully, at the priests lustfully - this is a woman’s very great weakness. They run after them like unhappy heifers. It's a great damned mortal sin. You desecrate the grace of the priesthood, by this you desecrate with your lust the grace of monastic tonsure - “the embrace of the Father.” Great mortal sin. We don’t go to see the priests in the temple, we go to pray to God. We stand before the holy face. And how the demon confuses many when they look at holy icons, with what lust they look at the crucifixion of the Cross of the Lord - a very serious sin. Why do you always need to sigh about this every day: “Lord! Forgive our mental fornication, Lord. Forgive our passions, Lord. Forgive our darkness, forgive our inner filth, Lord!” You always need to repent and not hide this sin. And Sodom’s various perversions are shameful to talk about. And may Saint Moses help us. “Oh, this topic is so shameful, you can’t say anything about it.” How? This is a burning topic; if we remain silent about this topic, many of us will die in ordeals. We will all stumble in this ordeal, if we do not realize and repent of our sinfulness, of course, it will be very bad. So, Lord, grant us to be aware of our weaknesses. Everyone struggles with infirmities without exception. And youth goes wild, and hobbies, and everything. Last night I said: “Lord, grant us the purity of such thoughts, to see in every person the image and likeness of God, to see the Divine beauty, to rejoice in this beauty.” It is this spiritual knowledge of beauty, as Dostoevsky wrote, that will save the world. Not some simple beauty, but precisely the spiritual knowledge of beauty. Never feel dirt towards each other, lust, copulation and other evil spirits - stay away. It must be embarrassing to think about. The feeling of shame must be constantly in us, then we will defeat lust. If we are not ashamed, we are already lost, we are shameless creatures, then God forgive us. The Monk Moses could have said: “Well, I am weak-willed, I am in captivity, I must do what I am commanded.” Well, so what, well, it would be a simple man - a Pole, and that’s all. They would have baptized him into the Polish faith, and there would have been eternal destruction. And he conquered everything courageously, entered into eternity, and serves as an example of immortality for us. And we need to overcome temptations and not commit mortal sins.

The Monk Ambrose of Optina loved all the people so much. He often said: “Brothers and sisters, I forgive you in advance all your minor sins. Just don't commit mortal sins. Don’t especially sin by fornication. You will have to answer heavily for these sins at the Judgment of God.”

Schema-Archimandrite Zosima (Sokur)

Why today, with a sigh, do we all pray: “Reverend Moses, all of us, one hundred percent of those standing here, are struggling with these passions. The demon torments, especially mental fornication, mental defilement. There are such perversions, such disgusting things, such visions, such dreams that cannot be said in a fairy tale or described with a pen. We look at each other with such thoughts. Forgive us. You have won, Reverend Moses, and with your gracious help help us to win, to see in every person not meat, but God’s beauty, the image and likeness of God, purity of thoughts, purity of views and constantly the purity of shame.” Only some dirt comes to mind: “Merciful Lord! What am I doing! Forgive me, it’s embarrassing to even think about it.” If there is a constant feeling of shame, your conscience will accuse you of being wrong, then there will be correction. Give us understanding, Reverend Father Moses.

And when the Lord deigns someone to visit the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, make a prostration at his tomb. Ask for his help, so that the Venerable Moses, with his incorruptible relics, will heal and renew our passions, our infirmities, our demonic flesh, and give us spiritual strength to live in purity of truth and holiness, to please God, and to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. Amen.

This is the holiday of St. Moses today. Always pray to them with a sigh - to John the Long-Suffering and Moses Ugrin for the purity of your life.

There is no point in being artificial saints - “I am without passions”, everything is with passions, everything is with vices, everything is with weaknesses. We will lie impassive in the coffin with a wooden cross. Then the passions will die, but a new life will begin, the ordeals will begin. We must talk about this. Then everything will be revealed - God’s truth and all our human untruths will be revealed. Help me about this, Lord, not to be afraid, but to reflect, to condemn oneself, not to justify one’s sins: “Someone seduced me, someone touched me.” If you don't give a reason yourself, no one will seduce you. If you don't give a reason, no one will touch your ass. So, everything depends on us, I would tell you more abruptly, but I am in the holy church. I think you understand everything. A clear sermon without words.

Please strive for cleanliness! I myself am struggling, I am ashamed, I myself am overwhelmed by thoughts, I can’t get away from this, I am a sinful person myself, I confess my infirmities out loud at every liturgy at the altar, and I teach you the same way, not to hide this pus within yourself, to be a dark vessel, internal cleanse the bottles, turn them inside out. But I warn you, never turn your confession into pornographic stories, this is already an abomination. The fact of sin is all clear to the priest. And then, either the priests are experienced weak, or sick, maybe so overwhelmed, and they begin: “How?...Where?...What?...”, and he went. There is no need for this abomination. The fact of sin is - “Forgive me, Lord!” The Lord knows the rest. These sins are never advertised, but at the same time, they are constantly fought to the death.

I once told you that we had one archimandrite in the monastery, in Glinskaya, for almost ninety years. We tell him:

- Father Vlasiy, accept the schema already.

“I can’t, my passions torment me.”

- Lord, ninety years old - do you still have passions?

“Eh,” he says, “(I was still Savvaty then) Fr. Savvaty, you still don’t know what happens in old age, how stupid people become.

Like this. And then I thought: oh, Lord, God forbid, this is what awaits me too. So, we don’t know what awaits us in old age, what nonsense, what temptation. Only hope in the Lord. And through the prayers of the Reverend Moses and all the Reverend Fathers, may the Lord help us win! I always pray when I read the “Our Father”: from grave, unbearable temptations, from grave, unbearable temptations, save me, O Lord, on this day and in the future of my life. This is how you always pray, asking that overwhelming temptations that we cannot handle pass us by, so that the Lord will grant us all according to the strength of our earthly life. Amen.

Now we are finishing the service of God, by the grace of God, in our church. Those who were at confession, we partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ. We perform a prayer service and pray to St. Moses. The akathist was a very good one compiled for him. For those who are tormented by the demon, read the akathist. The Kiev-Pechersk Lavra issued rare akathists from the Lavra; an akathist to St. Moses was printed there. Whoever is overcome by a demon, pray, read the akathist, ask for help. Help will definitely come from above, from Heaven, through the prayers of the Monk Moses. And then you will go home to rest.

Tomorrow is the great patronal feast of Mount Athos, our Panteleimon Monastery, the memory of the holy great martyr and healer Panteleimon. The Holy Great Martyr Panteleimon, his image with holy relics, always greets us all as if alive.

On Saturday, the All-Merciful Savior, the honeyed first Savior, by the grace of God, or popularly the Maccabees. This does not mean that the poppy needs to be blessed. It’s the sorcerers who only go around with this poppy seed, sprinkle it on it and everything else. This is a witchcraft thing. Poppy seeds are sanctified like any other: like wheat seeds, grains of oats, barley - and that’s all. And the poppy has no witchcraft effect. It’s only people who cast spells to their own destruction, wear poppy seeds, pour them into their pockets, pour them into borscht.

Another superstition. The man doesn’t want anything, doesn’t acknowledge it, but she pours water into his borscht, into his soup, pushes this prosphora, sticks it somewhere on him. Don't throw beads under the feet of pigs, they will trample them. A person does not understand, does not recognize - there is no point in giving a shrine to a person. The time will come when God, through our prayers, will call him to faith, he himself will ask for holy water, and some prosperous bread, and a cross. There is no need to hang crosses by force, so as not to tear them down or blaspheme. No need. Remember, violence is a sin. Never do violence, but pray for all the unfortunate, so that the Lord will call them, so that they themselves put on these crosses, they themselves strive for repentance, they themselves ask for holy water and a holy prosphora. Never force anyone in any way, do not forcibly drag men, women, etc. into the temples of God. This is all a sin, it’s bad. So, keep in mind, remember, violence is a sin.

I told you everything, I explained everything to you for the glory of God. Lord help me to carry my cross wisely, patiently, and constantly have spiritual reasoning. And if you feel that you are becoming a burden to other people, then you are wrong. He becomes fixated on something: “I am being saved, and the rest are perishing,” - that’s it, this is the first soul like this to perish. He gets fixated, walks and smiles in his false holiness. This is already a dead person, there is no point in communicating with such a person. From him, “get away from evil and do good” from this man, this is a spiritually contagious, sick man.

Your face is bright, clean, and you must constantly strive to be what people need. If you become a burden for people, it’s bad, you are already a seriously spiritually ill person.

I explained everything, I told you everything. Do you have any questions for me?

— Is it possible to close your eyes when you pray?

- Well, why not? That's what their eyes are for, to open and close. I also sometimes close my eyes and pray with my eyes closed so as not to be distracted by my thoughts. And then you look at this and that with your eyes, you know, eyes are eyes. So, why not? But don’t keep your eyes closed all the time, otherwise you’ll fall asleep.

Prayer of St. Mary of Egypt

(Mary left her parents and left Egypt for Alexandria. There she lost her chastity and indulged in unbridled and insatiable fornication, but then she repented and after much prayer set off across the Jordan, into the desert, where she spent 47 years, and the Lord forgave her her sins.)

Oh, great saint of Christ, Reverend Mary! In Heaven you stand before the Throne of God, but on earth you are with us in the spirit of love, having boldness in the Lord, pray to save His servants, who flow to you with love. Ask us from the Most Merciful Master and Lord of faith for immaculate observance of our cities and villages, for deliverance from famine and destruction, for those who mourn - consolation, for those who are sick - healing, for those who have fallen - rise knowledge, strengthening for those who go astray, prosperity and blessing for good deeds, orphans and widows - intercession and eternal rest for those who have departed from this life, but on the day of the terrible Judgment, at the right hand of the land, we will all hear the blessed voice of the Judge of the world: come, blessed of My Father, us follow the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world, and you will abide there forever. Amen.

Prayer against the fornication of her husband to Thomaida of Egypt

Oh, all praise to the martyr Thomaido! For the purity of marriage, even having labored to the point of blood, and having laid down your soul for the sake of chastity, you have found yourself worthy before the Lord, even more honorable than you in the person of the holy virgins. Hear us praying to you, and just as Borimia of old had you as a healer from the flesh, according to the grace given to you from God, grant to those who now resort to your intercession joy and freedom from carnal warfare, and a chaste life and abiding in marriage and virginity with your God-pleasing prayers. Make every effort to intercede, for our bodies will be a temple of the Holy Spirit living in us. Oh, most chosen among wives and faithful servant of Christ! Help us, so that we do not perish with our passions and lusts, but let us be guided by our minds and strengthened in our hearts in all piety and purity, glorifying your help and intercession, the grace and mercy of the Triune God, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. . Amen.

1st prayer to Moses Murin for drunkenness

O wonderful and God-bearing Father Moses, a great servant of Christ and a great miracle worker, we humbly fall down to you and pray: let us be partakers of your love for God and neighbor, help us to do the will of the Lord in simplicity of soul and humility, to fulfill the Lord’s commandments without sin, look with compassion for every soul of your faithful admirers who seek your mercy and help. To her, all-merciful servant of God, hear us praying to you, and do not despise us, who demand your intercession and bring you a worthy song, we please you, Father Moses, we glorify you, purity of the lamp, glorifying the merciful God, in the Holy, Originless Trinity of the glorified Father and Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

What is handjob

In essence, masturbation is a waste of human energy, for which a Christian believer is able to find a more reasonable use, but besides this, this type of satisfaction can tell about the weakness of the Orthodox, in particular the inability to properly manage his lusts.

It should be noted that masturbation is a terrible sin and no matter what it is called in Orthodoxy, such an addiction can push a Christian to commit other sins and it follows from this that, having overcome one, one can also cope with others.

Malakia itself is a product of the gravity of fornication, because unclean, bold intentions have a detrimental effect on human spirituality. Such an addiction is unnatural, since fusion with the opposite sex does not occur, while the Christian Church allows fornication only committed among couples who have legalized their relationship and their goal is procreation.

The Holy Fathers spoke about masturbation as follows:

Rev. Abba Serapion: “There are only three types of lustful passion: the first occurs due to sexual confusion; the next one, for which the Most High defeated the son of the patriarch Judah Onan, is produced without merging with the female sex, in Holy Scripture this type of lustful addiction is called uncleanness, which the Apostle spoke about: for those who are celibate or widowed: it would be good for them to remain like me . However, if they cannot restrain themselves, then let them enter into marriage; after all, creating a marriage is much better than succumbing to an addiction.”

Archpriest Vasily Zenkovsky: “Such an act represents serious sexual corruption, since the meaning of sex lies in the essence of the other sex.”

Atonement for sin by an adulterer

The punishment for adultery is great, and no one is protected from it. Often the punishment for the debauchery of parents is borne by their children, not understanding the reasons for the misfortunes that befall them. To gain salvation, first of all, you need to admit your sin to yourself. Having realized guilt, people usually seek reassurance in prayers. It is best to visit the temple and perform the Sacrament of Confession, repenting before God. During the sacred ceremony, a person reconsiders his values, principles, and returns to the righteous path. Having cleansed his soul and enlightened his mind, he begins to see previously unnoticed possibilities.

However, just attending a church service is not enough. Priests recommend going to church every Sunday, making donations, helping the suffering, and giving alms. Selfless help to the poor, orphans or infirm old people will help atone for this terrible sin.

At home, you need to improve family relationships and make sincere apologies. It’s good to increase your time together, pay more attention to your partner, speak kind words to him more often, and confess your love. All this must be sincere and come from a pure heart.

Priests recommend going to church every Sunday

Having a zeal favorable to piety, you were tempted by a certain young wife, who had much wealth, and her husband, who went with Boleslav, did not return; Then, having received visions and kindness into his mind, he was wounded by carnal lust for the saint, but he endured everything, praying. Therefore, reverently marveling at this, we cry out to you with joy:

We honor the memory of your repose and the discovery of your honorable relics with love, we please you, crying out like this: Rejoice, our glorious intercessor; Rejoice, you who anticipate the petitions of those who call upon you in temptation; Rejoice, thou who through many sorrows entered into the joy of the Lord; Rejoice, you have poured out tears to wash your soul; Rejoice, the word of the apostle: he who fulfills love is long-suffering. Rejoice, you who have inherited heavenly bliss with the saints; Rejoice, you who have established your faith through a life pleasing to God. Rejoice, give your help to those near and far; Rejoice, blessed inhabitant of the heavenly world. Rejoice, Reverend Father Moses, wondrous miracle worker and champion of purity. Kontakion 11

By singing the Akathist we honor and magnify you, O Reverend Father Moses, who zealously celebrates your holy memory. You, having graciously accepted our small prayer, are our champion, intercessor and prayer book to the Lord. We, remembering your godly life and your arduous deeds, sing to the Creator who glorified you: Alleluia. Ikos 11

Your honest and wholesome relics are like a light-giving lamp, most wonderful Father Moses, for the unevening light shines from them through abundant miracles, and with the same heartfelt love we joyfully exclaim to you: Rejoice, thou who passed through temporal death into eternal life; Rejoice, you who miraculously healed John the Long-Suffering. Rejoice, thou who hast been brought back to earth for the settlements of paradise; Rejoice, good worker of the heavenly grapes. Rejoice, olive tree of the garden of Jesus; Rejoice, greatness of the venerable Pechersk fathers. Rejoice, quiet refuge for those overwhelmed by passions; Rejoice, glorified by God throughout the world. Rejoice, Reverend Father Moses, wondrous miracle worker and champion of purity. Kontakion 12

Grace was given to you from God to protect from the unclean passions of every person who resorts to your intercession with faith and love. We sing in gratitude to the Lord, who has given us you, a quick, merciful healer: Alleluia. Ikos 12

Singing your life as the angels, we please you, Father Moses, as a prayer book for us before the Lord, an intercessor and mentor to salvation, and with tenderness we proclaim to you like this: Rejoice, prayer book for peace above all else; Rejoice, not just for the monk, but also for the laity, illuminating the path to heaven. Rejoice, you who attract all hearts to yourself with your love; Rejoice in the many miracles of God, glorified one. Rejoice, wanderer, having reached the heavenly fatherland; Rejoice, imitating the patience of sorrows of ancient Job. Rejoice, ever-present helper in temptations; Rejoice, healing myrrh of God's grace. Rejoice, for the Angels rejoice in you and men glorify God. Rejoice, Reverend Father Moses, wondrous miracle worker and champion of purity. Kontakion 13

Oh, wonderful servant and holy wonderworker, Reverend Father Moses, this little hymn, brought to you with love in praise, mercifully received from us, begged all the Creator and Lord to grant us spiritual salvation and physical health, faithfully singing to God: Alleluia. (This kontakion is read three times, then ikos 1 and kontakion 1)

CANON OF THE REVEREND MOSES UGRIN

voice 2 Song 1

Irmos: Come, people, let us sing a song to Christ God, who divided the sea and taught the people, even as he learned from the work of Egypt, for he was glorified. Come, people, let us bring praise to God, who glorifies His saint and showed him in all temptations insurmountable, and let us sing a song to Him: gloriously glorified. The all-malicious enemy brought upon your master, the blessed Prince Boris, death as a cursed fratricide, and you wanted to destroy with him, but you, saved from the evil ones, sang: glory to God in everything, blessed be the Name of the Lord. Having been saved from death by the hand of God, you came to Kiev to Predislava, the sister of Yaroslavl, where you were overcome with pity for your master, you said everything about him, as much as he suffered, like a silent lamb, without resisting betraying himself in the hands of those who sought his blood, and you sang : Our God is gloriously glorified. For the sake of a certain time of fear, you hid yourself, O Reverend, showing humanity in yourself, until the Lord revealed you, like a light, to everyone who flows the narrow path into the image, which you kept pure through many temptations, singing: My God, in my weak flesh you were gloriously glorified. Theotokos: All that is mighty in God, the Queen, present yourself soon to those who bring prayer to You and see how the murderers of souls rise against us, destroy them with the arrows of Your power to the end, and let us cry to You unceasingly: how great and terrible is Your name by our enemy, gloriously glorified. Song 3

Irmos: Having established me on the rock of faith, you have enlarged my mouth against my enemies, for my spirit has rejoiced, always singing: there is nothing holy like our God, and nothing is righteous than Thee, O Lord. Having established your spiritual feelings on the solid rock of faith, you went into captivity, having trust in the One, the most grievous wounds and the cross of Jesus, who endured the cross, as if He would deliver you from the snare of the fisher; In the same way, in every place you sang: there is nothing righteous more than You, Lord. The glands were heavy hand and foot, and the crampedness of the five years before the ascent, you were not broken in mind, but, having an unbound tongue, you thanked God for all who had happened on the spot, singing: You brought all this righteousness upon me, for there is no righteous man more than You , God. You are red in face, but you see your brightest soul in chains, a certain young woman from noble wives, a widow, was wounded by the arrow of your love and deceived you much, holy one; You answered her: I do not obey your will, as God willed, so I sing to Him: there is none righteous, more than You, Lord. The beauty of your body, especially the chaste words of the fornicator, was marvelous, trying to catch you with her many caressing words, but you, blessed one, having the firmest mind, you said wisely: who, when, having listened to his wife, was saved? And you cried out to God: save me, O God, from this misfortune, for there is no one more righteous than You, O Lord. With the multitude of the deception of the filth that befalls the woman, with the multitude you answered: I have been redeemed by the blood of my Christ, but I will be made like a slave to a cold woman, who I have not known from my birth, and do not let me destroy the labor in these bonds, for the sake of which I hope to escape eternal bonds, if I remain like this, enduring and giving thanks, singing: there is none more righteous than You, Lord. Theotokos: I am captured by the captivity of cruel falls from the enemy and seen in the prison of my mental darkness, O Lady, quickly resolve by Your intercession, and with the rays of Your mercy, enlighten my mind and turn to sing: there is no other quickest help, except for You, Most Holy Mary the Virgin. Sedalen, voice 5

The fornicator will be scorched by the fire of your beauty, rush to evil advice, think that if she redeems you at the price of the captive, she will be able to bend her will conveniently; But you, reverend, having the fear of God in your heart, you constantly cried out: save me, O God, from such fury, for I come running to You, my Master. Song 4

Irmos: You came from the Virgin, not an intercessor, nor an Angel, but the Lord Himself, who became incarnate, and you saved all of me, a man. Thus I call to Thee: glory to Thy power, O Lord. The woman came, captivated by passion, to the one who captivated you, blessed one, gave the price for you and, having eaten, allowed, wanting to bind your soul with sinful bonds, but you, having protected yourself with a cross, you went to that house, singing psalms: if I walk through the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for God is with me, to His power be glory. You have become like your master, just as the Jews who bought Him prepared for passion, so the vile fornicator prepared for you, and if your soul is not wounded by passions, then your body will be covered with suffering. You deigned better to suffer with your body than with your soul, singing: Glory to Your power, Lord. May you not feel the kindling of passion in your body, you have rejected all sweet food and soft vestments from you, and instead of them you have clothed yourself in fasting and prayer, desiring dry bread and water with purity, rather than sundry foodstuffs and wine with unclean food, and, Having not been defeated by the enemy, you sang: Glory to Your power, O Lord. You see the second Joseph, brethren, just as he left the robe in the hand of the fornicator, fleeing sin, thus revealing the beauty of the robe to himself, escaping from the hands that would lead him to a nasty mixture, and thus disgracing the invisible enemy who wants to defile the soul and body of the sufferer , but succeeded in nothing, saying: Glory to Thy power, O Lord. Having found a second Egyptian, the enemy tried to ensnare the blessed one, unable to tolerate the purity of his heart or the kindness of his face, and he marveled at her and the angels, calling: glory to your power, Lord. Theotokos: I desired Thy kindness, O King Most High, with the advice of the Father and the overshadowing of the Most Holy Spirit, like rain on the fleece, descending into Thy most pure womb, O Virgin. Raise back the fallen kindness of my mind, Lady, and sing to You unceasingly: glory to Your power, Lady Theotokos. Song 5

Irmos: Light to the Giver and Creator of ages, O Lord, instruct us in the light of Your commandments: do we know no other god? Unable to deprive you of the mental light, the sensual attempted to take it away, reverend, and cast you into a dark prison, where you were sick with hunger and thirst, but you cried out: My God, do not forsake me, for I know no other to You. Like Elijah and Paul of Thebes, who sometimes fed in the desert, He also surprised His mercy on you, for He bowed the only servant of that wife to mercy and commanded to feed you secretly, but you, imputing the visitation of God to be, cried out to you: besides You, there is no other God Don't know. Many, ignorant in you, holy, acting of God's grace, exhort you, so that you obey the will of your mistress and become the master of that and all her possessions. But you despised all this, for the love of God, saying: besides this, I do not want to know anything else. It was not the dominion of the corruptible, but the dominion over the passions of the flesh that you sought, our most blessed Father Moses, the same God has given you, for not only did you enslave your passions to the spirit, but you also accepted the power of others in temptations to cooperate, for this reason you cried out: nothing else, I don’t want to know anything other than the love of God. You laughed at the madness of the fornicator, as if you commanded your slave to lead his city and village with glory and worship you as if he were your master, but you spoke words of chastity with a commanding voice: you are laboring in vain with the commandment of you to do this, because I don’t want to know anything other than God. Theotokos: O rejoicing enemy, as if we caught the love of sin with sweets, we are put to shame, O Lady, but we, in the storm of everyday rumors of the distressed, were cheered up and grant help to reach the quiet refuge of Your protection: do we know no other Helper for You in sorrow? Song 6

Irmos: Lying in the abyss of sin, I call upon the abyss of Thy unfathomable mercy: from aphids, O God, lift me up. You have not plunged into the abyss of passions, nor have you soaked your robe in filth, O Reverend, even as you desire, the God-instructed monk secretly clothed you in angelic clothing and taught how to maintain that immaculateness, do not be afraid of fear, nor give your cloaks to the enemy: for God exists He also delivers His servants from aphids. The fornicator is plunging into the abyss of sinful kindling, despairing of her hopes for you, lay heavy wounds on you, reverend, commanded, having stretched you, to beat you firmly with a rod, as if the earth would be filled with your blood, but you, enduring this with gratitude, cried out to you: from aphids , My God, lift me up. In order to frighten you, who was undaunted, you know, you, blessed one, had to suffer so much torment, if you had not done the will of your mistress, but you, ready for everything, answered boldly: neither fire nor wounds can separate me from the love of God, I have the same hope, as if he will save me from aphids. You did not submit to your wife, who was darkened by shamelessness, but even more than that, you rebuked her, reverend, as if she had overcome the fear of God, and you spat on the shamelessness that forced you into bad confusion, without fear of her rage or anger, for you, father, had hope in God, as He I will deliver you from her hand. Seeing your wife put to shame by you, present you to the prince, from whom he received the final judgment, yes, whatever he wants, he does on you, having the power to betray you through many torments and death. But you, prophetically foreseeing their destruction, answered: you yourself will soon depart into eternal destruction, but Christ, my God, will deliver me from that. Theotokos: I stand before the peace-loving prince and, like a captive, I hear judgment on myself, even if they want to commit fornication on me, and who, having taken over the land for me, expose themselves to my feelings and, through need, entice me to commit fornication with them. But until now in this world the mortal ax has not cut me, You, the peaceful King of Heaven, Mother, have married you and from aphids, Mother of God, deliver me. Kontakion, tone 3

Seeking one God in the Highest, you despised all earthly things, were careless about your body, you gave yourself up to manly torments, hunger, thirst, bonds, locked in prison, you valiantly endured beatings, bloodshed and cutting off, pure for the sake of your virginity, You bore courageously. And now with virgin faces standing before the Most Holy Trinity, pray to be delivered from all temptations crying out to you: Rejoice, Moses, most blessed father. Song 7

Irmos: The ungodly command of the lawless tormentor rose high in flames. Christ spread spiritual dew to the Godly youth, He is blessed and glorified. Having received the ungodly command from the prince, the fornicator, without hesitation, attracted you to a nasty mixture, wanting to be satisfied with your beauty, full of purity, and the Angels were amazed at her, calling to him who arranged this in you: Blessed are you, the Creator God. Let all the arrows of the passionate enemy fall on you, holy one, although they wound you, but you yourself are vulnerable, groaning, as if you saw your being unconquered, but even more so calling: God, blessed are you. Working in vain, O woman! - You said, O most blessed one, - I will not touch your uncleanness, I will take out God at my right hand, my flesh will leap below, as if the fear of the Lord is consuming my bones, so I call: God, blessed are you. Wanting to soften the hardness of your mind, the fornicator, commanded to beat you with clubs and inflict a hundred wounds on you every day, but did not waver, as your flesh was clothed in the love of God, to whom you bore a hundredfold fruit, calling: God, blessed are you. Fierce beating and cutting off the reception, holy, you were like dead and alive lying down, but you cut off the head of a standing enemy, showing him dead and ineffective, you cried out: My God, my strength, blessed are you. Theotokos: Falling into fierce adversity, I cannot rise up in any way, You, my Lady, give me Your strong hand and raise me up again on the nose, so that I may walk in the path of the Lord rightly, calling to You: from generation to generation, blessed be Your name. Song 8

Irmos: Into the fiery furnace of the Jewish youth who came down and turned the flame into dew, sing to the deeds of the Lord and exalt unto all ages. Drawn into the fiery furnace of lustful sin, you called God alone, O blessed David, saying: O God, come to my help, and having entered into the flames, you remained unburned, having scorched the enemy’s many-witted head, who did not want to sing the Lord’s song forever. With the fire of fornication, the enemy could not scorch your purity; he raised up a fierce persecution against the monastic regiments, and expelled all from the region of the unmerciful prince, who would soon be comprehended by the wrath of God, according to your prophecy, holy one, because you did not want to have those singing the Lord in your entire power forever. The prince suddenly cast out his evil soul, there was rebellion and rumor among the people, the slaves rose up and killed their masters, and with them the fornicator who tormented you perished, and blood came down on her head. But you, venerable one, sang: in all my deeds I will bless the Lord forever. Having given praise to God who freed you, you came to the cave to the Monk Anthony, bearing the wounds of martyrdom on your body, and everyone who saw them cried out: sing, all you do, to the Lord and exalt Him forever. Although you hid your purity, brighter than the sun, you moved into a dark cave, and you adorned this cave with fasting and all-night vigils, so God show you the grace to help everyone in temptations, may His Name be glorified forever. Theotokos: Hide the sting of my sin before the All-Seeing Eye; I scorch it with the kindling of the flesh every day, adding lawlessness to lawlessness. But first my deeds will not even be revealed to angelic and human shame; help me, O Pure One, to overcome this fury, so that I may glorify Your name forever. Song 9

Irmos: From God, God the Word, who came with ineffable wisdom to renew Adam, eating into the corruption of the fallen lute, from the Holy Virgin, who inexpressibly incarnated us for the sake of faith, we magnify with one wise songs. From God, God, the descended Word, glorified you in this life, holy, with miraculous gifts: for someone who was overcome by fornication with the touch of your rod, the passions were deadened, and, receiving from you the commandment to never talk with your wife, having created the hedgehog, live peacefully for the rest of the year, great for you . From generation to generation, your purity is glorified, even though you suffered a lot for your sake, you accepted the bliss of the pure in heart, but having passed away from this temporary life, you see the Most Holy Trinity purely. Remember us too, reverend, who honor your memory. The Lord calls you a dead man, for you have put to death the lusts of the flesh with your wondrous patience, and you have the power to mortify the passions that touch you with your might, as you did to the long-suffering John, who received peace in his bones, magnifying God, who glorifies His saints. Rejoice, mountain, having in the cave the incorruptible relics of the wonderful Moses, sing the praises of the monastic councils, for you have an accomplice and representative in sorrows, bow to his race, touching with your lips, and you will find peace in your lands. We glorify the Most Holy Trinity, for having given us the lamp of peace, our father Moses, whom we celebrate the summer memory of, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit in the One Divinity, faithfully, we magnify with one wisdom. Theotokos: We always glorify Thee, O Pure Virgin, for Thou hast gathered Thy faithful servants to this place, where many receive healing, who undoubtedly worship Thy image and call our Pechersk fathers in prayer. Svetilen

Light, Tripartite, Creator, True God, enlighten the darkness of our souls, for we bring Your saint to You in prayer and pray with him: calm the storm of our sins and deliver us all from sorrow.

Prayer before the icon of the Mother of God “Unexpected joy”

Amen.

2nd prayer of the Venerable Moses Murin

Reverend Father Moses! Look upon us mercifully and lead those who are devoted to the earth to the heights of heaven. You are a mountain in heaven, we are on earth below, removed from you, not only by place, but by our sins and iniquities, but we run to you and cry: teach us to walk in your way, teach us and guide us. Your entire holy life has been a mirror of every virtue. Do not stop, servant of God, crying to the Lord for us. By your intercession, ask from our All-Merciful God the peace of His Church, under the sign of the militant cross, agreement in faith and unity of wisdom, destruction of vanities and schisms, affirmation in good deeds, healing for the sick, consolation for the sad, intercession for the offended, help for the needy. Do not disgrace us, who come to you with faith. All Orthodox Christians, having performed your miracles and beneficent mercies, confess you to be their patron and intercessor. Reveal your ancient mercies, and to whom you helped the Father, do not reject us, their children, who are marching towards you in their footsteps. Standing before your most honorable icon, as I live for you, we fall down and pray: accept our prayers and offer them up on the altar of God’s mercy, so that we may receive your grace and timely help in our needs. Strengthen our cowardice and confirm us in faith, so that we undoubtedly hope to receive all the good things from the mercy of the Master through your prayers. Oh, great servant of God! Help all of us who flow to you with faith through your intercession to the Lord, and guide us all in peace and repentance to end our lives and move with hope into the blessed bosom of Abraham, where you now rest joyfully in your labors and struggles, glorifying God with all the saints , in the Trinity glorified, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer to Saint Sarah of Egypt

(Blessed Sarah labored in the Egyptian desert around the 5th century. They say about her that for 13 years she endured the demonic temptation of lustful thoughts. At the same time, Sarah never prayed for this battle to end, but, on the contrary, she indulged in asceticism and fear even more God, repeating: “Lord, give me strength!" One day, when the temptation intensified, the saint went out onto the porch of her cell. Then the spirit of fornication appeared to her in bodily form and said: “You, Sarah, have defeated me.” She answered: “You It was not I who won, but my Teacher Christ.”)

Troparion of the Venerable One, tone 8

In you, mother, it is known that you were saved, even in the image:/ having accepted the cross, you followed Christ/ and, in action, you taught to despise the flesh, for it passes away,/ to be diligent about the souls, things more immortal. // The Angels will also rejoice O Reverend Sarah, your spirit.

In you, mother, that which is in us in God’s image has definitely been preserved: for, having taken up your cross, you followed Christ, and in practice you taught to disdain the flesh as transitory, but to take care of the soul, an immortal creation. That is why your spirit rejoices with the Angels, Saint Sarah.

Kontakion, tone 27

For the love of the Lord, / you hated the desire for peace, / enlightened your spirit with pity: / you conquered the beasts with great strength; / but with your prayers / / the swaying of the enemy was destroyed.

For the sake of love for the Lord, reverend one, you hated the desire for peace, having enlightened your spirit with fasting, for you courageously defeated the beasts; but with your prayers, thwart the uprising of our opponents.

3rd prayer of Moses Murin against drunkenness

Oh, sacred head, reverend father, most blessed abbot Moses, do not forget your poor to the end, but always remember us in your holy and auspicious prayers to God. Remember your flock, which you yourself shepherded, and do not forget to visit your children. Pray for us, holy father, for your spiritual children, as if you have boldness towards the Heavenly King, do not be silent for us to the Lord, and do not despise us, who honor you with faith and love. Remember us unworthy at the Throne of the Almighty, and do not stop praying for us to Christ God, for you have been given the grace to pray for us. We do not imagine that you are dead, even though you have passed away from us in body, but even after death you remain alive. Do not give up on us in spirit, keeping us from the arrows of the enemy and all the charms of the devil and the snares of the devil, our good shepherd. Even though your relics are always visible before our eyes, your holy soul with the angelic hosts, with the disembodied faces, with the heavenly powers, standing at the Almighty Throne, rejoices with dignity. Knowing that you are truly alive after your death, we bow down to you and pray to you: pray for us to the Almighty God, for the good of our souls, and ask us time for repentance, so that we may pass from earth to heaven without restraint, from the bitter ordeals of the demons of the princes of the air and may we be delivered from eternal torment, and may we be heirs of the Heavenly Kingdom with all the righteous, who from all eternity have pleased our Lord Jesus Christ, to Him belongs all glory, honor and worship, with His Beginning Father and with His Most Holy and Good and Life-Giving Spirit, now and ever and ever. Amen.

The other Joseph, the great zealot of purity and chastity, all-honorable and equal to the angel Moses, with sacred songs of praise, sinners, we pray to you diligently: pray to Christ God, that he may heal all our passions and bestow great mercy. Seeing your labors and exploits with passions in your purity, holy one, who does not marvel? For hunger, prison and wounds, you were not enslaved by the pleasures of the Lyakhovitsa, but, like a king, possessing passions, now and then you were glorified by the All-Seeing human soul, from the unfitness in the temptation to grant grace to everyone, grant us, who honor your memory, Moses Rev. In the Highest, seeking the One God, you despised all earthly things, you were careless about your body, you courageously gave yourself away to torment, hunger, thirst, bonds, locked in prison, you valiantly endured beatings and beatings, for the pure sake of your virginity, you courageously endured you are. And now with virgin faces standing before the Most Holy Trinity, pray to be delivered from all temptations crying to you: Rejoice, Moses, most blessed father.

Prayer to the martyrs Galaktion and Epistimia

The story of the birth of the future martyr is interesting. His parents were pagans and served the goddess Artemis. The mother could not get pregnant, which is why she had to endure ridicule, bullying and beatings from her own husband.

On one of these days, after the mother of the future martyr was beaten, a wanderer knocked on her house. This wanderer was not a simple one, but a monk—a Christian. At first the woman did not want to let him in, but the monk did not leave, continuing to stand at the gate and waiting for alms. Then the future mother of Galaktion let the monk in and generously gave him gifts. But the sigh that escaped from the woman’s chest did not escape the beggar’s attention. The Stranger asked what this so sorrowful sigh was connected with.

The woman shared her grief with the monk. And then he told her that this was all because she worshiped a pagan goddess, and not the true God. Leucippia, that was the woman’s name, wanted to be baptized just to “carry in the womb.” The elder monk baptized her, and soon Leucippia conceived.

Klitofon, her husband, having learned about the miracle, also decided to be baptized. The couple lived in piety. The born son was named Galaktion. When Galakion grew up, a bride was chosen for him. Epistimia was beautiful and noble. But far from Christianity. Or rather, the girl was a pagan. Because of her love for Galaktion, she was baptized.

The young people decided to maintain their virginity and lived like brother and sister, despite the fact that they got married. They accepted martyrdom for Christ. When Galaktion was taken away, Epistimia could not remain without him and hide her faith. She joined her husband-brother, sharing his suffering.

Prayer against fornication to the martyrs Galaktion and Epistimia:

Venerable Moses Ugrin, Pechersk - memorial day 08.08 n.st. (26.07 old style)

[td]

Venerable Moses Ugrin, Pechersk.

The Monk Moses Ugrin,
a Hungarian from Pechersk, together with his brother George, entered the service of St. to the blessed Prince Boris (+ 1015; commemorated July 24/August 6). After his murder on the Alta River, George was also killed, and St. Moses was hiding in Kyiv. In 1018, when the Polish king Boleslav captured Kyiv, St. Moses, along with others, ended up in Poland as a prisoner. A rich Polish widow, burning with a passionate desire for him, ransomed the captive. She tried in every possible way to seduce the young man, but he preferred the pangs of hunger to magnificent feasts, spiritual riches to the corruptible things of this world. An Athonite hieromonk passing through those places tonsured St. Moses into monasticism. The shameless Polish woman, having achieved nothing, ordered the emasculation of the Monk Moses. After the rebellion in Poland, during which the widow was also killed, the Monk Moses came to the Kiev Pechersk Monastery, bearing the wounds of martyrdom and the crown of confession as a winner and brave warrior of Christ. The Lord gave him strength against passions. The Monk Moses labored in the Pechersk Monastery for 10 years and died approx. 1043 and was buried in the Near Caves. By touching the holy relics of the Monk Moses and fervent prayer to him, the Pechersk monks were healed from carnal temptations.

This is how the life and feat of the Monk Moses Ugrin is described in the historical book of the priest Yakov Krotov, “History as Life”:

MOSES UGRIN.

Chapter first

Icon of St. Moses Ugrin. Located above the shrine with his relics in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

Rus' of the eleventh century and Russia of the sixteenth, and even twentieth, may well be considered different countries.
Different capitals (Kyiv is not Moscow), different territories (after all, the western lands, the basis of the state of Olga and Vladimir, went to Poland). The language changed, the appearance of the nation into which the Finnish tribes merged changed. And, of course, the economy and the state have changed. Prince Vladimir, for example, and his closest successors are not omnipotent monarchs at the head of a single kingdom, but leaders of a federation of Slavic (and non-Slavic) tribes. The unity of Russia in the 11th century is the blood unity of the leaders who stood at the head of such tribes, this is the unity around the Grand Duke, the unity of not subordinates, but allies. The strength of the princes of the 11th century was not in the nobility or the bureaucracy, but in the military squad, in their own courage, in the support of cities (embodiing the strength of the tribe). Of the four Russian saints of the 10th century, four were non-Slavs. Among the saints of the 11th century there are Varangians, Greeks, Russians, and Hungarians. If the Russian soul is mysterious in one way, it is in its ability to be non-Russian from birth. That the princes in the 11th century became completely Russian is understandable; but, for example, three Hungarian brothers, whom at the beginning of the century we see among the servants of one of the sons of Vladimir - Boris, Prince of Rostov, also became completely Russian saints. The chronicle calls the brothers “youths” - this implies that they could not have been free warriors, but slaves from prisoners of war. When Vladimir died, their master was about thirty years old; the brothers were probably the same age or younger—the same age as the “baptism of Rus'.” It is not known which of his sons Vladimir wanted to see as his successor, probably the eldest, Svyatopolk. In fact, after Vladimir's death, the sons began a long and bloody struggle with each other. The first blow was struck by Svyatopolk, on whose orders princes Boris, Gleb and Svyatoslav were killed in 1015. Then Yaroslav gained the upper hand: he expelled Svyatopolk, shared power for some time with Mstislav of Tmutarakan, and after the death of Mstislav, he imprisoned his last brother, Sudislav, and became the sole ruler of Russia. Ordinary Middle Ages. After the death of Charlemagne it was even a little more medieval. The Hungarian brothers ended up in this fratricidal meat grinder. In the summer of 1015, George and Moses accompanied their master on a campaign against the nomads. Together with him they were returning from a campaign when they learned about the death of Grand Duke Vladimir. They remained with Boris even when the squad left him (Boris refused to start a fight with Svyatopolk for the throne). On July 24, nine days after the death of Vladimir, Svyatopolk’s soldiers carried out a massacre in Boris’s camp. George, Boris’s favorite servant, tried to shield his master from the blow of the sword, but was killed. In order to remove the golden hryvnia from his neck - a gift from the prince - they cut off his head. Moses escaped and took refuge in Kyiv with Princess Predislava Vladimirovna. He witnessed the short triumph of Yaroslav, who, at the head of the Novgorod army, defeated Svyatopolk and reigned in Kyiv for two years. But already in August 1018, Svyatopolk regained his throne. Or rather, his father-in-law, the Polish king Boleslav the Brave, returned the throne to him. The Polish army defeated Yaroslav and entered Kyiv without much resistance; Svyatopolk, as can be seen through the prism of the biased chronicle, enjoyed the sympathy of the townspeople. His nickname is “cursed” - more accurately translated as “unfortunate.” Boleslav helped his son-in-law by no means disinterestedly. He added to his political brilliance by symbolically sitting on the throne of Vladimir and taking his daughter as a concubine - the same Predislava who sheltered Moses. He rounded up his lands, taking the western region of Russia (“Cherven cities”) as payment for help. And, naturally, he captured a fair amount of gold and several thousand slaves - including Moses. Chapter two

Moses had to spend two decades in captivity. One year out of twenty became decisive for his entire life: a Polish woman fell in love with him. Five years of slavery passed - and suddenly there was a glimmer of hope. A beautiful and young, noble and rich widow, whose husband died during Boleslav’s campaign against Kyiv, who was in charge of towns and villages, thousands of peasants and slaves, herself became a slave of love. Imagine Balzac’s beloved Evelina Ganskaya - only young, who lived with her husband not for twenty years, but for a year, and who loved, not out of vanity, the famous writer, but selflessly - a beggar and a slave. But loving unrequitedly. Moses refused to become her lover and her husband. It was incredible, but it happened. Moreover, it was incomprehensible, especially in a world where marriage was a commercial transaction or a social union, and love was a somewhat exotic luxury, like pepper - a thing valued but not necessary. The love of a Polish woman who overcame social inequality was worthy of Juliet. Her appeal to Moses sounds like a song: “I will ransom you, I will make you noble, I will make you lord over my whole house! I want to have you as my husband! Only you do my will, quench the lust of my soul, let me enjoy your beauty! Give me your consent! I cannot endure the insane death of your beauty!” Note that, having mentioned lust, the Polish woman immediately emphasizes that it is not only passion that drives her, that she dreams of “an honest marriage and an undefiled bed”: “The heart flame that burns me will subside, my thoughts will stop tormenting me, and I will rest from passion . And you will enjoy my beauty and you will be the master of all my wealth, the heir to my power, the elder of the boyars.” It was hardly possible to expect Romeo’s feelings from Moses in this situation, but he did not show the elementary prudence that says: “If he endures, he will fall in love.” Of two evils, he chose the greater. Let us note that Moses did not explain his refusal very convincingly to the Polish woman. She heard only common, even vulgar, sexist attacks: because of a woman, Adam and Samson, Solomon and Herod suffered; Better than power and wealth is spiritual purity, “and more than that,” added Moses or the one who later wrote down his story in a completely un-Christian manner, “physical purity.” This was unconvincing if only because he was being offered a marriage in which the Church had never seen “impurity.” Perhaps Moses did not consider it possible to enter into a debate with a lady in love; perhaps he himself did not fully understand the reasons for his refusal.

Chapter Three

What happened after Moses’ refusal showed that either in the Polish woman’s love there was more “lust” than love, or that she understood love itself in a unique way. Having not received voluntary consent to the marriage, the noblewoman did not leave in tears. Nor did she bother herself with further requests. She decided to take it by force. First of all, she bought Moses. She did not hide her feelings, and they took about a thousand hryvnia from her (an amount related to the normal price of a slave, according to the expression from “Scarlet Sails”, like an oath to a simple “yes”). Now she had the legal right to order him to marry her, but she sweetened the order: “Frees him from his shackles, dresses him in valuable clothes, feeds him with sweet foods and with love seductions compels him to quench his passion.” Moses refused everything, “preferring,” as the biographer notes, “to eat dry bread and drink water with purity, rather than expensive food and wine with filth.” The enraged Polish woman decided that in this case he would not receive even dry bread, and decided to starve him to death (or at least remind him that his life and death were in her hands). One of the servants (though secretly from the mistress) brought food to the stubborn man. While Moses was undergoing the test of hunger, his fellow slaves tried to reason with him (either at the instigation of the noblewoman or on their own initiative). Their conversation with Moses is reminiscent of Job’s conversation with uninvited comforters. True, the biography writer turned the dialogue into two monologues, combining together all the remarks of the disputants, but it is not difficult to reconstruct the course of the debate. “The widow lived with her husband for only one year,” the advisers began, as if completely erasing the first marriage and making the widow a maiden, “she is more beautiful than many, has countless wealth, and if she wanted to marry any prince, he would not disdain her.” “Well, my brothers and good friends,” answered Moses, “you give me good advice: your words are better than those that the serpent whispered to Eve... The praise was doubtful.” But, in the end, the advice was also dubious - from the point of view of any morality familiar with the concept of “love”. “I don’t want...” Moses continued, “neither power, nor greatness among the Poles or Russians... (he, naturally, did not even mention wealth). For the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven, I neglected all this. The advisers have not yet touched upon the sensitive issue of the connection between worldly and eternal goods. Seeing that the carrot did not work, they reminded them of the stick: - Why doom yourself to torment, why suffer? If you have to die from this torture, what glory will you have? “If I have to die in these chains, I know that I will accept mercy from God.” The friends again chose to ignore the religious aspect of the situation for the time being. “It’s better to submit to a woman,” they continued, “to become free and master of everything.” How can you, a captive and slave of this woman, not want to become her master? The question sounded rhetorical, but Moses’ counter-question immediately revealed the emptiness of this rhetoric: “Slaves, of course, must obey their masters... for the good.” But how can I, who am free, become a slave to a woman? Who should I serve: Christ or a woman? The situation turned out to be paradoxical: Moses was a slave - but spiritually he was free; he could become the master of his mistress - but then it would be he who would fall into true slavery. If love is put on like a yoke, a person turns into a beast. However, the comforters did not argue; Yes, they felt that Moses was right - it was not for nothing that they themselves used the word “submit.” In general, the conversation turned to higher matters. Here it was possible to play on the rather decisive division in the society of that time of all sorts of matters, including moral ones, by class. - What prevents you from getting married? You are still young, you are not a monk and you are free (Moses, as we see, won this position). And who, besides monks, abhors women? And you, if you stay alive now (a big “if”), you’ll still get married later, and who won’t laugh at your stupidity then? “The beauty of a woman will never seduce me, will never separate me from my love for Christ.” If I survive, I will become a monk.

Chapter Four

There came a turning point in the conversation. The advisers, in general, should have given up - after all, in front of them, it turns out, is a monk at five minutes. Betrothal was then considered as the same legal act as marriage, and the intention to become a monk was fully equated with monasticism. Everything that was said was said in vain. But they decided to bring the dispute to an end. Perhaps the will of their mistress weighed heavily on them, perhaps they hoped that a good intention was far from a real monastic vow. One way or another, the conversation turned to theological ground. - If you say that you cannot transgress the commandments of Christ (in fact, Moses already said this), then doesn’t Christ say: “A man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will both become one flesh; so that they are no longer two, but one flesh”? “But Christ said: “Whoever leaves his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and house, he is My disciple.” — The Apostle Paul wrote: “It is better to get married than to get angry.” He especially ordered widows to enter into a second marriage. - And he added: “A married man worries about how to please his wife, but an unmarried man thinks about how to please God.” The exchange of quotes led to nowhere, so not all quotes were used. The issue of the relationship between marriage and virginity can be resolved in different ways, but one thing is clear: a person must decide it himself. But “to decide” at that time meant, first of all, to find solid support in the past, a precedent, an illustration of the truth. Here, naturally, the story of Joseph came to mind first of all to the advisers; Moses was completely in his position, and if the Polish woman differed from the Egyptian, it was for the better - after all, there was no talk of adultery here. But to the reminder that “Joseph first conquered a woman’s love, and then he too submitted to a woman,” Moses responded with a surprisingly deep analysis of the famous biblical story: “If Joseph had submitted to Potiphar’s wife, he would not have reigned after: God, seeing steadfastness him, gave him the kingdom, and for this reason the glory of him as a chaste person was preserved, although he later had children. Chastity for Moses is not so much physical purity as strict adherence to the divine will. Both by resisting the woman and by marrying, Joseph fulfilled God’s plan for the preservation and salvation of all Israel. “Abraham, Isaac and Jacob?..” the advisers laconicly reminded. Laconism also hid their power - after all, the Old Testament righteous were righteous for Christians too. But this also concealed their weakness - after all, it would be difficult for them to find holy spouses among the Christian righteous. But Moses honestly rejected this loophole and recognized the strength of the argument, as can be seen from his final words: “May all the righteous be saved with their wives!” I am the only sinner, I cannot be saved with my wife... This turned out to be the only, truly personal, and not a borrowed decision, against which nothing could be objected. Until now, Moses had been convinced that he was too weak to cope with a woman; there was no way to start convincing him that he was strong enough to do this. Was the young man lying when he called the path of marriage more difficult (and, accordingly, more honorable - after all, there is a crown) than the path of asceticism? Hardly; The majority of people who have embarked on the path of marriage, like many great ascetics, held and still hold the same opinion.

Chapter Five

“I alone cannot save myself” - this humble motto almost led Moses to real physical death. The further, the more sharply the beloved he rejected rushed from one extreme to the other, but could not think of anything other than carrots and sticks. First, putting aside the torture of hunger, she arranged for Moses to tour her numerous estates, ordering (psychologist!) all the people to bow to him as her husband and their master. What could Moses say other than the banal: “You try in vain. You will not deceive me with perishable goods, you will not steal spiritual wealth from me.” - Have you forgotten that you were sold to me? I won’t let you out alive, I’ll torture you to death. - I'm not afraid of that. It's a pity that part of your guilt will fall on the one who sold me. I will become a monk if God wants. Indeed, at this moment of relative freedom, an Athonite monk who wandered into the possessions of a Polish woman tonsured Moses. This rather symbolic act did not deprive the Polish woman of her last hope. Church canons prohibited the tonsure of a slave as a monk without the consent of the owner, so Moses’ monasticism was legally fictitious. The tonsure meant nothing to her - but it meant nothing to Moses either; both stood in the same positions. Another whip followed: it was ordered to give Moses sticks. The compassionate executors of the punishment asked him to have mercy on himself: to stop being stubborn. Moses only dotted all the i's, rightly denying the Polish woman the right to be called loving: - Do what is commanded to you, do not hesitate. It is no longer possible for me to renounce the monastic image and the love of God; neither fire, nor sword, nor wounds will separate me from God and the monastic vow. The crazy woman showed that she is not afraid not only of God, but also of people - she shamelessly forces me to defilement and adultery. I will not submit. The last gingerbread remained with the widow after this punishment. She took Moses to King Boleslav; he was surprised: “Is it possible to be as insensitive as you?!” - and willingly reinforced the boyar’s promises and threats. - How many benefits and what honor are you depriving yourself of, what torments are you submitting yourself to! Either life or death awaits you; if you fulfill the will of your mistress, you will be honored by us and receive great power; if you disobey, after many torments you will die. Boleslav, as a statesman, also saw in the incident the dangerous fact of the slave’s disobedience to the master. Therefore, he advised the boyar not to free Moses from slavery, but simply “to do with him what you want, like a mistress with a slave, so that others do not dare to disobey their masters.” Returning from the king, the Polish woman tried to “do what you want”: she ordered the newly minted monk to be forcibly put into her bed and embraced him, but again failed. Behind the coolly ironic remark of Moses: “You try in vain; I’m not crazy or a eunuch, but I abhor you as if you were unclean,” this must be hiding his struggle not only with the animal instinct within himself, but also with fear. It was not difficult to foresee that the noblewoman would again take up the whip. Literally: the “lover” ordered that Moses be given a hundred whips every day and, finally, ordered him to be castrated. There was still half a century left before Abelard was born, and Moses had already surpassed his romantic tragedy of a monk in love - with a feat for the sake of that one and only true Love that does not tolerate fakes, deception, or coercion. The toy was broken - this is how the noblewoman must have looked at the matter. The biographer of Moses adds that “Boleslav, because of his love for this woman and for the sake of her power, indulging her, instigated a great persecution against the monks and expelled them all from his land.” Polish chronicles, however, do not mention the expulsion of monks from Poland under Boleslav, but they confirm that there were hostile relations between the king and the clergy during these years. The biographer noted that after five years of captivity, Moses was under a love siege for one year, and immediately moved on to the story of his return to Russia. In reality, however, fifteen years passed between these events.

Chapter Six

In 1025 Bolesław died; after his death, the hard-won unity and greatness of Poland began to crumble, just as the unity and greatness of Russia collapsed after the death of Vladimir. One after another, princes in Poland were replaced, recently conquered tribes fought for independence, the country was pressed by the German Empire, the Czech Republic and Russia (in 1031, the united troops of Yaroslav and Mstislav recaptured the “Cherven” cities), Moses remained in captivity. Apparently, the powerful popular uprising of 1037 did not free him either. Although the peasants killed his mistress, heirs were probably found. It is unlikely that Moses approved of the rebellion in general, and this revolt, moreover, was a war of pagans against Christians. They destroyed monasteries and churches with particular hatred, killing bishops and priests. Note that later the Russian chronicler, vaguely representing the chronology of Polish events, portrayed Moses as a prophet predicting the imminent death of both the prince and the boyar, and the uprising as the intercession of the people for the monks persecuted by Boleslav. Is it possible, in this case, to trust other rather detailed details of the ancient Pechersk Patericon? After all, all the conversations given above are just a translation of the Slavic text. Apparently yes. We know where the author’s inaccuracies come from - from confusion in Russian chronicles; but it could be accurate, because the first life of Moses was written shortly after his death by a person who knew this story from his own words. Finally, it is important not only whether the position of Moses and what he said was reliably described, but also that the biographer reliably stood in the same position. This position (“I alone am a sinner and cannot be saved with my wife”) is interesting in itself, it is so different from the usual misogyny of that time. Deliverance came only in 1039. Yaroslav (the autocratic ruler of Rus' for two years now) helped Boleslav's grandson Casimir return to the throne. Yaroslav, in addition, married his sister Maria to Casimir. The Russian prince played the same role in Polish events as Prince Boleslav played in Russian events twenty years ago. His reward was the same: Yaroslav received recognition of the legitimacy of his power over the disputed territories, and as a “ven” - bride price - Casimir returned eight hundred (not counting women and children) captives who survived from those captured by Boleslav in 1018. Among them was Moses.

Chapter Seven

The second homeland greeted Moses with prosperity, both political and economic. A single power, at least speaking on equal terms with its western and eastern neighbors, colonizing new lands, Yaroslav, nicknamed the Wise, through his children became related to almost all the kings of Europe and - moreover! - with the Byzantine emperor, who built the majestic Hagia Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, inspiring the compilation of a code of laws and translations of the works of the teachers of the Church. Moses' brother Ephraim was still alive, who founded a monastery in Novy Torzhok in memory of princes Boris and Gleb. One detail shows how different the religiosity of the 11th century was from today. After the death of his brother George, Ephraim found his head at the site of the massacre and kept it with him all his life, without burying it; she was buried only with him in 1053. A year later - in 1054 - Prince Yaroslav also died. All these events surrounded Moses, who led the life of a hermit. In 1051, a dozen monks, including him, led by another Athonite tonsure, Anthony, united in a monastery that combined features of both hermit and community life. They lived separately in caves they dug into a steep cliff near Kyiv, but gathered together to pray. In the east, such monasteries are called “cines”. Before the founding of this “Pechersky” (“cave”) monastery, Moses lived either alone or in one of the tiny monasteries that were then founded by the nobility. A detailed story about it has been preserved in the chronicles of the Pechersk Monastery. Speaking about the years spent by Moses in the Pechersk Monastery, the biographer does not mention either temptations or passions. Before us is a man who paid dearly for his chastity, who endured the battle for love, who has unquestionable authority: “He did more than Joseph and can help those suffering from fornication,” the monks said about him. One of the ascetics, on the advice of Moses, took a vow not to speak to women. But silence didn't help. “The saint had a staff in his hand, because he could hardly walk from his wounds,” writes the author of the patericon, “and with the staff he hit him in the stomach, so that his member became dead, and since then there have been no temptations for this brother.” Help is cruel. In a different era, this could have sent you to prison. But for such a humane time to come, it was necessary, perhaps, to go through torture and self-torture. And after the death of Moses, those who believe: “I am the only sinner and cannot be saved with my wife” turned to him and are turning to him in prayer. And those who believe that they cannot be saved without a wife have quite a lot in common with Moses: the One Whom they consider to be the Savior.

Troparion, tone 4:

Seeing your labors and exploits with passions according to your purity, holy one, / who will not be surprised? / For hunger, prison and wounds were accepted, / you were not enslaved by the pleasures of the Lyakhovitsa, / but, like a king, possessing passions, / now and then you were glorified by the All-Seeing human heart, / from Him, in the temptation to grant grace to everyone, / Help us, who honor your memory, / Reverend Moses.

Prayer to St. Moses Ugrin from lustful thoughts

Sin approaches a person through his thoughts. Demons, seeing his desires, use all his thoughts to push him onto the road to sin. And a person must understand that obsession comes to him from the devil, and he must not allow lustful thoughts. But man himself is unable to control the power of the devil and therefore must call on the Heavenly Forces for help, because the fight is being waged for his soul. Through the power of prayer, a person’s thoughts are cleansed of harmful obsessions. You must monitor your thoughts throughout the day and if sinful images or impulses arise, you must immediately turn to prayer for help from the Heavenly Patrons. The Monk Moses Ugrin became famous for his steadfastness against carnal temptations, became a great martyr and subsequently a Heavenly Mentor to those who are overwhelmed by devilish temptations. You should turn to him in prayer for help.

Prayer to Jesus Christ against lust

Almighty God, who created all creation with wisdom, raise me up with Your hand, having fallen through many sins: grant me Your help, and grant me freedom from worldly temptations, from the devil’s snares, and from carnal lusts. Have mercy and forgive me all who have sinned all the days of my life; anoint my soul with the oil of grace and generosity of Your only begotten Son, the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ, with Him all glory befits You and the Holy Spirit forever. Amen.
