You can select names according to the calendar for 2022 in this material.
What are saints
Many people happily celebrate the main days in Orthodoxy, for example, Easter, Christmas, some even fast. But the Orthodox church calendar also contains other dates. Every day is dedicated to one of the saints, who are usually revered through prayer and reading akathists. Previously, children were not given exotic names; parents chose only from those that were in the calendar. Before the Sacrament of Baptism, parents had to make a choice from the names of the saints falling on that day. This tradition has survived approximately in this form to our time.
Advice. Nowadays, parents can give their child two names: one “according to the passport” and the second “according to baptism”. For example, the parents named their daughter Snezhana, there is no such name in the Saints and the girl cannot be baptized with this name. You can choose a suitable name for your birthday or baptism, for example Anna, and she is baptized with it.
It is believed that immediately after the sacrament of Baptism, the baby enters the path of Orthodoxy, which means he joins the church, receives protection from his heavenly patron, who will protect and help him throughout his life. Growing up a little, the child can independently read a prayer to his patron saint.

Ancient and modern ways of naming children
Modern scientists believe that parents, when choosing a name for their child, should take into account the sound of their own names. So, if at least one letter in the child’s name and the names of the parents is repeated, then the parents will be happy with their child; if not, the result will be the opposite.
But in the old days, when choosing a name according to the calendar, parents also took into account the time of year when the baby was born. Since the appropriate name was chosen as being closest to the date of birth or baptism, it could be varied to suit natural circumstances.
So, if a baby was born in a harsh winter, then he was given a soft, melodious name, as if softening the influence of nature. When choosing a name, parents tried to correct the natural qualities of the child.
Children born in spring are very delicate, but do not know how to stand up for themselves. The name given to such a child should instill confidence in them and add fighting qualities. It will protect them from various conflicts of fate and help them withstand difficult situations.
“Summer” children are active and purposeful, but they lack patience and endurance. A name can give them these qualities.
And finally, autumn children are distinguished by good health, perseverance and a clear mind. A correctly chosen name will also help them add purposefulness and gentleness in their relationships with people.
You can give the baby the right to choose a name. In the old days this is how they did it. Parents listed all the names out loud, monitoring the child’s reaction. If the child reacted excitedly to the name, began to cry and turn away, then the name was rejected and read further. As soon as the child smiled, it was considered an expression of agreement. Try to do the same.
There is still a tradition of naming a baby after the first person you meet. According to legend, a child named after a stranger was supposed to receive a good fate and happiness as a gift.
How to choose a name according to the calendar
Previously, a child was always baptized a few days after birth. It was believed that in this way he would quickly receive the protection of the Lord and have a greater chance of good health. Then, on the 8th day, the baby underwent the Naming ceremony. However, now Baptism and Naming can be carried out no earlier than on the 40th day after birth. This is necessary, among other things, for the baby’s mother to be present at the Sacrament, since enough time will pass after the birth and she will be able to visit the Temple.
What name can you choose for baptism? You have three options:
- Birthday. Choose one of the names on the day the child was born.
- Day 8 You can choose a name that falls on the 8th day from birth, it is called the name day.
- Day 40 Choose the name you like, which falls on the 40th day from the birth of the child, that is, on the day of the sacrament of baptism.
Try not to just choose the first name you like that sounds good, remember that you are choosing a patron for your child. Read the Lives of the Saints, which tell in detail about the life, trials, and deeds of the saint you have chosen. When your baby grows up, be sure to tell him about them.
Advice. Saints are not a fixed list; they change from year to year. If a new canonization has taken place, then the name of the saint appears on the calendar. In 2022, they can count about 1 thousand male and female names. Therefore, the choice is quite large and you will certainly find a suitable name for a newborn girl or boy.
Is it possible to name a child after his father or grandfather?
Family traditions of naming babies after their father or grandfather still exist. And in the old days it was a kind of ritual that carried a huge semantic and energetic load. Along with the name, the baby received an informational and emotional message: what he should be and who he would eventually become.
The tradition of naming sons after their father or grandfather, and daughters after female relatives, has both pros and cons.
Advantages
- The child finds himself energetically protected from all the troubles of the outside world by his relatives, and feels himself part of a large family.
- Children grow up brave and internally free; they perceive the entire world around them as safe and interesting.
- From childhood, a child develops a model of strong family relationships, and he will create his own family based on this model.
Flaws
- Parents subconsciously or consciously focus on the example of a relative with a certain character and destiny, and the child may inherit his worst qualities.
- All personality traits brought with the name will affect the child’s own character, strengthening or breaking it. The end result is not always what the parents wanted.
- The influence of the name of a relative, from whom one must take an example, means high demands placed on the baby. He simply must become like his grandfather or great-grandfather. As a result, the child does not have the opportunity for personal development, which is destined for him by nature, cannot realize himself and is forced to live according to someone else’s scenario, which will inevitably lead to a psychological crisis.
- If the decision to name a daughter after the mother, and a son after the father, is made not due to family traditions, but simply at the request of one of the parents or both at once, then the influence of the name on the child is even stronger. It energetically “puts pressure” on him, forcing him to be the same as his parent, and not allowing him to develop his own individuality.

Lucky name and numerology
Numerology is the science of numbers, which has deep historical roots. Our ancient ancestors used it successfully. It was founded by the great mathematician Pythagoras, who lived before our era, who proved that numbers form their own language. And in the 16th century, another scientist, philosopher Cornelius Agrippa revealed the secret of this language. Today we know it. Modern numerology allows you to understand the numerical values of dates, events, names, and most importantly, birthdays and names. After all, they are the ones who largely determine a person’s destiny. The numerical value of a birthday reveals to us the secrets of a baby’s natural inclinations and is a personality number. By translating into the language of numbers the name that you plan to give to your child, you can understand whether it will answer your ideas about his character and abilities.
So, we translate the letters of the selected name into numbers in accordance with the table, then add them and calculate the number of the name.
1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 |
A | B | IN | G | D | E | Yo | AND | Z |
AND | Y | TO | L | M | N | ABOUT | P | R |
WITH | T | U | F | X | C | H | Sh | SCH |
Kommersant | Y | b | E | YU | I |
For example, the name Stepan consists of the following numbers: 1+2 + 6 + 8+1+6 = 24. In total, they will give the number 24, which must be reduced to a prime number by adding its digits: 24 = 2 + 4 = 6.
Now look at the meaning of the resulting name number 6. If you are not satisfied with such character traits, consider another name.
Number 1
This number signifies a personality full of energy and desire to act. A child with this name number is always confident in his own strengths and capabilities; his distinctive features will be courage and determination. Such a person will never be confused in extreme situations, but he does not succeed in planned actions so well. There are few creative personalities among these people.
Number 2
These are very vulnerable and sensitive children, with increased emotionality. As a rule, they are creatively gifted and have many different talents. Number b
These children grow up to be politicians or high government officials who are successful in various enterprises. They become famous in society due to their scientific or philosophical views. However, all this is possible if they are taught to work from childhood. Laziness is their main drawback.
Number 7
The child's talent will develop in the field of science, art or philosophy, he can manifest himself in religious activities. But success will depend on discipline and the habit of analyzing the results obtained. Such children are usually leaders among their peers.
Number 8
This number favors activities in the field of business relations and portends great material benefits. Since childhood, such people are distinguished by hard work and the desire to achieve success in everything. Sometimes they get carried away by trifles, somewhat losing their way. They need to always remember the main thing, without being scattered about the little things.
Number 9
These children enjoy authority and are often leaders. They have pronounced abilities in mathematics and other technical disciplines. They are musical and sensitive, but at the same time they become excellent engineers, builders, and designers. Their weak point is the lack of a sense of proportion.
Number 11
A child with this name grows up decisive, strong, thorough and intelligent, which helps him achieve high goals in the future. But due to his complacency, which is determined by the number 2, at one moment he can lose everything.
Number 22

Recommendations from a psychologist
Whatever the method of choosing a name, it should not be a burden to the child himself. An unsuccessful name can cause ridicule and offensive nicknames from classmates, and subsequently cause embarrassment among adults who are unable to remember and correctly pronounce the combination of first and patronymic. For example, if the father’s name is Apollo, then the son should hardly be called Vasily or Ivan. The combination “Vasily Apollonovich” will hurt your ear. Babies should also not be given names that are too ancient, belonging to the philosophers of Ancient Greece, otherwise the name Plutarch will immediately turn into a nickname, and the child himself with such an elaborate name will begin to feel out of place, it will be difficult for him to establish relationships with friends and adapt in a new team.
Remember that a name is the first word that we say when we meet, creating an impression that remains in memory for a long time. Try to follow these simple rules.
- The name should be “movable” so that affectionate forms can be easily formed from it. This is necessary to convey different shades of attitude towards the child. For example, Peter - Petenka, Petrusha; Tanya - Tanechka, Tanyusha.
- The boy’s name must not only be combined with the patronymic, but also easily form the patronymic itself, otherwise you will doom your grandson or granddaughter to suffering.
- When choosing a name, consider how it will sound together with your middle name. There should not be a jumble of identical consonants and vowels at the junction of the first name and patronymic. It is very important that the name sounds soft and easy, for example: Antonina Nikolaevna, Alexey Mikhailovich. But not Fedor Vladislavovich, Vadim Igorevich.
- By naming a child after his father or mother, you give his character instability, increased emotionality and irritability. Listen to how the names Alexander Alexandrovich and Andrey Andreevich sound. It’s as if a person is forced to balance on one wheel all his life. Sergei Alexandrovich and Nikita Andreevich will be more firm and confident. In addition, along with the name, the child inherits not the best qualities from his parents - this is the law of nature, because the worst “sticks” faster. You should not contribute to the development of negative character traits in a child by calling him by your name.

Reasons for the differences between the 19th century church calendar and earlier calendars
In the 19th century, in connection with the discovery of differences in month words created at different times, active research began to identify differences in month words and establish the causes of these discrepancies. The first step in this direction was taken by a scientist whose name remains unknown. His work was published in the magazine "". He compared the monthly calendar (1056–1057) with the contemporary church calendar. The main reason for the discrepancies, according to the author, was the calendar reform in the 12th century, the task of which was to bring all calendars into a single form.

Choosing a child's name
Olesya and Alexander Lazarev did not plan a child. But the unexpected news not only did not upset them, but even made them happy. Both loved pleasant surprises. They decided to take the matter seriously. The main thing, Alexander believed, was to choose the right name for the child. So they bought books and began to study various ways of naming babies.
According to the newlyweds' calculations, the child was supposed to be born in the spring, in the second half of May. Having read about the nature of their Taurus treasure in the horoscope, the couple were somewhat puzzled. Stubbornness is not the best character trait, but if channeled in the right direction, it will turn into tenacity and determination. With such inclinations, their child will achieve a lot in life. The name should correct his natural character, and also correspond to the Orthodox calendar, the couple decided.
First they turned to the Yuletide calendar. Of the male names, both liked Denis and Dmitry, and of the female names, Elizaveta, Maria and Christina. And it is also necessary for the name to “sound” together with the surname and patronymic,” Alexander recalled. Dmitry Alexandrovich Lazarev sounds much better than Denis Alexandrovich. And Maria Alexandrovna is absolutely magnificent! In addition, the name Maria is femininity and determination - something that the stars will not give to their daughter. Now all that remains is to check whether she will disappoint her parents. The names Maria, Olesya and Alexander have one common letter, which means their daughter will make them happy.
Now we just have to decide on our son’s name. Dmitry and Alexander have common letters, but Dmitry and Olesya do not. It's a pity, but the name will have to be rejected. We need to look for something else. They again turned to the saints.
The wife’s name was beautiful, but it consisted of rarely found letters, so the task ahead was difficult. Finally, they settled on Roman. The name is beautiful, and the letters are found in both the name Olesya and the name Alexander. But that’s already the name of the future mother’s brother. This means that uncle and nephew will turn out to be namesakes. However, the relative turned out to be a quite successful businessman, and not without various talents. No serious shortcomings were noticed in the uncle, and the couple decided that the uncle’s influence would not hurt their nephew. The name Roman also corrected the shortcomings of star influence, it added confidence and restrained the ardor of nature. In addition, you can come up with so many affectionate names from him - Roma, Romochka, Romashka.
Satisfied and happy, the couple went to bed.
