Memory of the holy unmercenaries Cyrus and John
Memory of the holy unmercenaries Cyrus and John
Today, February 13, the Church remembers the unmercenary saints Cyrus and John
The holy martyr Cyrus lived at the turn of the 3rd and 4th centuries in Alexandria and was a famous physician.
He was a Christian and treated all the sick free of charge, not only providing help for physical illnesses, but also healing mental illnesses that were the causes of physical illnesses. Preaching the gospel teaching, the holy physician converted many pagans to Christ. During the persecution of Diocletian (284–305), Saint Cyrus retired to the Arabian desert, where he accepted monasticism, and there he continued to heal people with his prayer, receiving from God the gift of healing all diseases.
In the city of Edessa, in the south of modern Turkey, at that time there lived the warrior John, a pious Christian. When the persecution began, he came to Jerusalem and there, hearing about the holy monk physician Cyrus, he began to look for him. To do this, he went first to Alexandria, then to Arabia. Having found Saint Cyrus, not without effort, John became attached to him with all his soul and became his faithful follower and disciple. Having learned that in Egypt, in the city of Kanope, the Christian Athanasia was captured with three young daughters: Theoktista - 15 years old, Theodotia - 13 years old and Eudoxia - 11 years old, Saints Cyrus and John hastened to come to their aid, fearing, as it were, fear of torture did not force them to renounce Christ. They visited them in prison and strengthened them in courage for the upcoming feat. Having learned about this, the ruler of the city seized Saints Cyrus and John and, convinced of their firm and fearless confession of faith in Christ, subjected them to terrible torture in front of Athanasia and her daughters. The martyrs bravely withstood the torture. Seeing this, the confessors also bravely endured all the torment and were beheaded.
Following them, the unmercenary saints Cyrus and John were executed in the same place († 311). Christians buried their bodies in the church of the holy Apostle and Evangelist Mark. In the 5th century, the relics of Saints Cyrus and John were transferred from Kanopus to Manufin. Later their relics were transferred to Rome, and from there to Munich).
Another prayer
Oh, holy wonderworkers and gratuitous doctors Cyrus and John, we resort to you, suffering fiercely from our illnesses. In the days of your life you preached that the illness of the soul is more severe than all the illnesses of the body, and when the soul is sick with sins, the body often falls into illness. We know that through illness we are cleansed of sins; pray, holy miracle workers, to the Lord, may He grant forgiveness of sins to us, weak and helpless, exhausted by illness, and may we not perish, falling into despondency. Hasten to help us and heal our illnesses, and we will be in health, having spent our days in repentance, we will end our lives in peace and on the Day of Judgment with a pure heart we will appear before the eyes of the Judge of the universe, the Knower of the Heart of God. We sing and glorify Him forever and ever. Amen
