“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen. 1:1).
Even before the appearance of our world, the spiritual sphere was filled with ethereal beings, one part of which was cast out of Heaven for disobedience, the other remained faithful to the Creator. Among the mighty celestials, the Church honors Jehudiel, the helper of all who follow the path of righteousness.
Archangel Yehudiel
Angelic world
Angels (from the Greek “messenger”) are the general name for spiritual entities participating in the implementation of God’s Providence in the world, once called from the darkness of non-existence to the light of life. Their task is to deliver the will of the Almighty to humanity, which is limited in its capabilities after the Fall.
Intelligent serving spirits, endowed with free will and who have become unchanged in their self-determination, Angels are organized into a harmonious system of subordination of 9 groups (ranks). Each group occupies its position in the triple hierarchical system of faces:
- In the first, in descending order, the flaming Seraphim, the wise Cherubim, as well as the Thrones of Divine Justice are identified;
- In the second there are strict Dominions, miraculous Powers and protective Powers;
- In the third are the guides of the Beginning, the evangelizing Archangels and nameless Angels.
It is the Archangels who make the secrets of faith accessible to people, reveal to those who are thirsty the meanings of prophecies, help to understand and accept the will of the Creator, and enlighten the mind darkened by sin with the grace-filled light of the Gospel.
Interesting fact
The canonically correct veneration of Angelic beings was approved in 343 at the Local Council in Laodicea. The Church categorically condemned the worship of Angels, which was then spreading locally, in place of the primary appeal to the Lord Christ (Col. 2:18).

Oh, holy great Gabriel the Archangel! Amen.
Another prayer to the Archangel Gabriel
Oh, holy Archangel Gabriel! We earnestly pray to you, instruct us, servant of God (names), to repentance from evil deeds and to confirmation in our faith, strengthen and protect our souls from seductive temptations and beg our creator for the remission of our sins. Oh, holy great Gabriel the Archangel! Do not despise us sinners who pray to you in this world and the future, but an ever-present helper to us, so that we may continually glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
Ministry of the Seven Archangels
Among the seven brothers of Jehudiel, two Archangels are most familiar to believers. The first is Michael, who threw the rebel Lucifer from Heaven. The second is Gabriel, the always welcome messenger, who proclaimed the gracious news of the birth of the Savior and His Forerunner John, and brought the Virgin Mary a palm branch as a symbol of Her upcoming Assumption.
Each of the remaining five Archangels also has an important mission assigned by God:
- Raphael brings long-awaited healing;
- Uriel kindles human hearts with the light of Divine love;
- Selafiel inspires sincere prayer;
- Barachiel is generous in blessings to the faithful;
- Jeremiel reminds us of the coming Judgment.
- “He who praises God” is the meaning of the name Jehudiel. His ministry is focused on glorifying the Most Holy Trinity in the thoughts and actions of members of the Church of Christ.
About the Archangels in Orthodoxy
In Orthodoxy, they are considered to be closest to God.
According to the ancient classification (2nd century), there are seven Archangels. The number seven in the Old Testament, as in the New, is considered an important number: God created the world in seven days, in the book of Revelation it was necessary to open seven seals, etc.).
These are Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Raguel, Sariel, Jeremiel.
In the Orthodox Church there are eight Archangels: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Selaphiel, Jehudiel, Barachiel, Jeremiel. In fact, there are more archangels; Sihail, Zadhiel and others are mentioned in the Bible.
Archangel Michael (Hebrew: who is like God) is the prince of the Archangels and angelic warriors.
He is the most revered greatest angel in all religions. Muslims consider him an angel of nature who gives man food and knowledge.
In the “Revelation” of the Apostle John, Michael cast down the devil along with his army to the earth. Michael and his legions of angelic warriors protect people from the Antichrist. On the shores of the Dead Sea, a scroll “The War of the Sons of Light with the Sons of Darkness” was recently found, in which Michael is called the “Prince of Light.”
Since he is the commander-in-chief of the angelic army, he is also called the Archangel. On the icons he is depicted in military uniform with a helmet on his head and a sword in his hand, a defeated dragon under his feet, holding a date branch in his left hand.
Religion ascribes to him the role of judge at the Last Judgment, in which he is depicted in iconography weighing the souls of sinners. Therefore, he is considered the patron saint of the dead.
Archangel Michael, as a fighter against evil spirits, is prayed for healing, since evil spirits are considered the source of diseases.
He participated in many historical events on earth, taking the form of a pillar of fire or a simple angel, helping to defeat good. In Christianity they believe that the cherub armed with a sword at the gates of heaven is also he.
They pray to Archangel Michael not only for the healing of diseases, but for help in sorrows and sorrows.
Archangel Gabriel - “The Power of God.”
In the Old and New Testaments he is considered the bearer of good news. So, he informed the Virgin Mary about the birth of Christ, Zechariah about the birth of his son.
In the Bible - he is the guardian of the chosen people, among the Kabbalists - the teacher of Joseph, among the Mohammedans - Mohammed received revelations from him; To the holy Prophet, according to God's instructions, he explained the essence of the prophetic vision of the future.
Archangel Gabriel is depicted with a candle (lantern) and a jasper mirror, meaning that revelations are sometimes comprehended through time after comprehending the laws of God and by listening to the voice of conscience. Sometimes depicted with a branch of paradise, which he brought to the Virgin Mary.
Archangel Raphael.
The meaning of the name is “The Lord heals” or “The Lord has healed.”
One of the angels who offer the prayers of saints to the Lord. Healer of people and animals. Traveling with Tobias, he taught him how to make healing ointments and balms using fish for medicinal purposes. This suggests that, in addition to spiritual healing work with the sick and injured, he gives knowledge to healers how to use earthly drugs, therefore he is depicted with a vessel of healing drugs, with his right hand leading Tobiah with a fish.
He may be called upon for consultation during treatment. Archangel Raphael helps future healers with their studies, including obtaining money for study and time, creating their own practice and attracting clients.
Archangel Uriel
“The Light of God” or “The Flame of the Lord” - it illuminates situations, clarifies prophecies, and warns. In Judeo-Christian books he is called the archangel of salvation. He warned Noah about the flood.
Uriel is the wisest archangel who gave people alchemical knowledge. Intellectual information, practical solutions, and creative abilities can be obtained by turning to him in prayer. The answer will be in the form of insight into a new idea.
Uriel helps with earthquakes, floods, fires, hurricanes, and natural disasters.
On the icons he has a raised sword in his right hand, his left hand is lowered, in it is a “flame of fire.”
Archangel Selaphiel
His name means “prayer to God,” and he is the supreme minister who inspires people to pray. He is depicted looking down in a position of prayer.
Archangel Yehudiel
“Praise of God” - glorifying God, blessing ascetics, protecting them from the forces of evil, interceding for reward for their exploits. Iconography of Jehudiel in full height with a golden crown in his right hand and a scourge in his left.
Archangel Barachiel
“Blessed by God” (translated from Hebrew), bringing God’s blessings to people for good deeds. He intercedes with God for mercy for people, for mental health and salvation, and patronizes pious families.
But we must take into account that he asks God for blessings only for good deeds, for good everyday activities.
There are a lot of pink flowers on his clothes.
Archangel Jeremiel
“The Height of God” is believed to be sent by God to man to help him rise up and return to God.
On icons he is depicted with scales in his hand.

Patron of monastics
God is glorified in righteous deeds when His saints, denying themselves, betraying their bodies and souls to selfless service to the Almighty, through sacrifice and asceticism offer Him imperishable praise on earth, reaching Heaven. Therefore, Jehudiel is a powerful patron and helper of the monastic brethren.
This celestial being gives strength to those who are weak on the thorny road, teaches and protects, and meets the needs of daily and humble obedience.
Useful materials
Jehudiel encourages Christians to overcome relaxation and laziness, sending feasible tests in order to indicate the right direction in the course of spiritual life.
What sources are there references to?
The name of Archangel Jehudiel is known from legends, but several places in Old Testament sources indicate the mission of the celestial being.
According to Church Tradition, it was Jehudiel who accompanied the Israeli tribes who wandered for a long time through the lifeless desert. His presence was indicated by huge pillars of fire and cloud:
“And the angel of God, who walked before the camp of the children of Israel, moved and went behind them; The pillar of cloud also moved from before them and stood behind them; and he entered into the midst between the camp of Egypt and the camp of the children of Israel, and was a cloud and darkness to some, and lighted the night to others, and the one did not draw near to the other all the night” (Ex. 14:19-20).
It is believed that it was the Archangel Jehudiel who protected and instructed the prophet Moses:
“Behold, I am sending My angel before you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared for you; watch yourself before His face and listen to His voice; Do not persist against Him, for He will not forgive your sin, for My name is in Him” (Exodus 23:20-21).
His power served as a formidable sword that exterminated the enemies of the chosen people:
“...When My angel goes before you and leads you to the Ammorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, and I destroy them from before you, then you shall not worship their gods, nor serve them” (Ex. 23: 23-24 ).

Yehudiel - acts as one of the participants in the Archangel Week. But it is taken into account only in the Orthodox branch of Christianity, while among Catholics the last mention of this angel is found only in the 17th century.
In the Holy Scripture itself, the Gospels, you will not find the name Jehudiel; only some religious legends tell about him. In particular, the revelations of Amadeus of Portugal, a righteous monk who lived in the 15th century.
Over time, information about the archangel was transferred to the “Lives of the Saints” by Dmitry of Rostov. It was then that he took his place among the most important saints and angelic beings among the Orthodox.
If we translate the name of the archangel from Hebrew, it will mean “praise of God,” “glorifying God.” And many events described in the Bible are connected with it.
Due to numerous requests from readers, we have prepared an “Orthodox Calendar” application for smartphones. Every morning you will receive information about the current day: holidays, fasts, days of remembrance, prayers, parables. Download for free: Orthodox Calendar 2022 (available on Android)
Thus, it was Jehudiel who was the intercessor and patron of the Jews when they were forced to be in the desert for a forty-year period. And he came to the people of Israel, taking the form of a pillar of fire, when they left Egypt.
The Archangel protected people from enemies. Thanks to Jehudiel, the Prophet Moses was able to fulfill the mission assigned to him by God.
The Angelic Messenger provides his assistance to all those who zealously and tirelessly work, glorifying the Almighty. Such individuals can at any time offer a prayer to Jehudiel himself or the angels under his charge, and they will certainly help.
What do they pray for?
Leaders and primates for the Orthodox people, priests and Patriarchs, simple monks and high clergy - all who have laid down their lives on the altar of serving God turn to Archangel Jehudiel with requests to strengthen faith, to give strength in the spiritual struggle against temptations, sinful thoughts and gravity to idleness.
Orthodox Christian employers especially often turn to this Archangel, on whose decisions the fates of many people subordinate to them depend. Yehudiel is also close to volunteers - those who, of their own free will, donate their personal time and funds for the benefit of those in need.
Prayer
Oh, great Archangel of God Jehudiel. You are a zealous defender of the glory of God. You encourage me to glorify the Holy Trinity, awaken me too, who is lazy, to glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit and pray to the Lord Almighty to create a pure heart in me, and to renew the spirit of righteousness in my womb, and to the Lord’s spirit to confirm me to worship God in spirit and truth to the Father and to the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Who is patronized by the Archangel?
Archangel Jehudiel is the defender of the faith. If a Christian is devoted to God with all his soul, the Warrior will be favorable to the believer and will always be on his side. He also takes care of the clergy, as they spread and strengthen the faith among the parishioners.
Archangel Jehudiel patronizes priests, patriarchs and monks
Monks enjoy special protection from the Archangel. People in leadership positions—those who are responsible for the lives of their subordinates—also turn to him for help. The Archangel especially patronizes volunteers who strive to selflessly do good to other people.
How they are depicted in icons
Archangel Yehudiel
The Orthodox iconography of all Angels has such common features as:
- the presence of a large amount of light on the image;
- large wings behind the back of the celestial being;
- a cloak and chiton with edging, like those of Byzantine courtiers.
As a detail symbolizing service at the throne of God, icon painters sometimes use elements of church vestments - an orarion and a surplice.
However, it is easy to distinguish celestial beings by what they hold in their hands. Thus, Archangel Jehudiel is always depicted as a beautiful young man with a three-part whip in his shuyts, which indicates the right to lynch sinners who are careless about the wealth of personal salvation.
With his right hand, Jehudiel gives a reward to the righteous who actively strive for perfection - a crown of pure gold. Archbishop Innocent of Kherson reveals the meaning of this gesture:
“Each of us, from young to old, is obliged to live and work for the glory of God. The greater the feat, the higher and brighter the reward. The right hand of the Archangel holds not just a crown: it is a reward for every Christian who works for the glory of God.”

Celebration day
All angelic ranks are glorified on the 21st day of the last autumn month (November 8, old style).
Is there a canonical akathist
Prayerful appeal to the celestials in Orthodoxy is expressed by the creation of canons to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, as well as the akathist singing to them and Raphael. Unfortunately, there is no canonical Akathist to Archangel Jehudiel approved by the Church.
“To have the ministry of affirming people who work hard, or, for the glory of God, to seek reward for them.”
This fresco inscription preserves the church veneration of the Archangel Jehudiel. The purpose of its existence is consonant with the original purpose of man - the glorification of the almighty God, who created all the diversity of material and spiritual worlds.
Seraphim Peresvetov
Akathist to Archangel Jehudiel
There is no separate akathist written to glorify Jehudiel, but any text intended for archangels, for example, for Uriel, can be used for this purpose.

Prayers to the Guardian Angel on different occasions
Our first prayer to the angel
“Holy Guardian Angel, pray to God for us!” If you are overcome by laziness and despondency, then appeal to the guardian angel of your soul like this: “Despondency with laziness, idleness and negligence are driven away from me, my vigorous guardian, may you work kindly and pleasing to God with good servants and the faithful, not without reward, below for the joy of my Lord." If you are tormented by carnal passions, then pray like this: “Deeds and carnal passions, my incorporeal protector, deliver me, so that through your intercession, pure in heart, I will see God and exalt Him forever.” “The prodigal demon, who always strives to desecrate my soul and body, drive him far from me, my guardian, may I sing to the Lord blamelessly with you and exalt Him forever.” If you have become nervous and aggressive, then pray like this: “Show me the way of meekness and patience, and eradicate anger and zeal from my heart, pray to the meek and long-suffering Jesus, Holy Angel, I pray to you.”
The voice of a guardian angel, if we pray to it sincerely, gives answers to our requests and helps solve problems.
