Chapel of Blessed Xenia of St. Petersburg

- a functioning Orthodox chapel in St. Petersburg. Located in the Vasileostrovsky district at the Smolensk cemetery. In the chapel, hidden away (underground), are the relics of Blessed Xenia of St. Petersburg. Assigned to the Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God.

History[edit]

Ksenia of Petersburg, who died at the end of the 18th or at the beginning of the 19th century, was buried at the Smolensk cemetery. People who revered Blessed Xenia removed the soil from her burial mound. The hill was filled several times. Later, a stone slab was laid on the site of the hill, which was also dismantled stone by stone. In the third quarter of the 19th century, a small chapel was built on this site. In 1902, according to the design of the architect A. A. Vseslavin, a large stone chapel in the pseudo-Russian style was erected. Consecrated on October 12, Art. Art. 1902.

In September 1940, the chapel was closed along with the Smolensk Church. At the same time, a decision was made to demolish the chapel, but it was later canceled. During the siege of Leningrad, the chapel housed a warehouse for containers of flammable liquids. In those years, a large number of church valuables were lost.

In 1947, the chapel was opened and, after renovation, on February 1, 1947, it was consecrated by the rector of the Smolensk Church, Archpriest Vasily Raevsky. On November 18, 1962, by decision of the authorities, it was closed again and given over to a shoe repair shop, and then in 1980 to a sculpture workshop.

The chapel was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church only in 1983. After restoration work, it was re-consecrated on August 10, 1987 by Metropolitan Alexy (Ridiger) of Leningrad and Novgorod.

In 2003, the gilded dome over the chapel was restored.

What do they ask Ksenia of Petersburg to do?

At the blessed chapel, obedience was carried out by a nun for ten years, who was engaged in cleaning there. When asked if she saw miracles, she replies: “It depends on what you take as a miracle. For a legless person to leave the chapel on two legs - I have never seen anything like this. But I have seen how, bursting into tears of gratitude, ladies take huge diamonds out of their ears and donate them to the needs of the Church. But you won’t ask what miracles these donations are for!”

The most frequent visitors to the Xenia Chapel are women and girls. It is believed that the saint mostly patronizes the female half of humanity .

According to legend, Ksenia once even acted as a matchmaker. And it’s not clear who she felt more sorry for, either the widower or the girl. But one day the blessed one came to the girl and asked for tea. Having drunk, he tells her: “Go to the Smolensk cemetery, there your husband is burying his wife in the ground.”

The girl did not understand anything that was said, but obeyed the holy fool and went to the cemetery, where a funeral ceremony was taking place. The girl joined the procession and met a recently widowed man who was burying his wife.

Subsequently, this man married the girl and lived happily with her until the end of his days. Therefore, if you are a man and are looking for a good wife, you should try asking Ksenia for help in the chapel .

Architecture[edit]

The walls of the chapel are made of brick and painted light green. Each side of the facade is decorated with a group of three arched gabled windows with columnar struts. The windows are decorated with stained glass icons. On the front and back sides of the facade, the cornice is decorated with a semicircular kokoshnik with mosaic images of Christ (on the back side) and Xenia of Petersburg (on the front side). The building is completed by a scaly tent topped with a gilded onion dome with a cross. Inside, the main decoration of the chapel is a marble iconostasis with a mosaic image of the crucified Christ.

How to ask Blessed Xenia

They say that it is best to contact the saint in writing , which is why white corners of notes and letters used to stick out from every crevice of Ksenia’s chapel. Now a special mailbox has been installed for these purposes.

They write messages asking for help to Ksenyushka and to the address of the Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God (the chapel is assigned to it). This is a way out for those who cannot come to St. Petersburg and come to the chapel.

Usually, in response, these people receive an envelope with rose petals soaked in lamp oil from the blessed one’s grave. Often the church postman receives letters of gratitude: “I asked Blessed Ksenyushka to help resolve our family problems, I asked her to intercede in prayer for us. And everything worked out! My mother managed to receive a pension benefit ahead of schedule, my son-in-law was unable to take away the apartment from his sister during the divorce, now it will go to my nephew.”

Of course, neither benefits nor housing can be compared with a rich spiritual life. Not everyone is destined to live on the street without property and money, as was destined for Blessed Xenia. But St. Petersburg people go to her grave,

  • who is asking for a new car,
  • who is waiting for a good husband,
  • who receive salary increases and career growth.

They go to the one who suddenly lost a loved one, carriages, and a cozy home. This is the mystery, because the blessed one refuses neither help nor support to anyone .

History of the Chapel and photographs

The chapel was built in 1902.
In the chapel rest the relics of St. Blessed Xenia of Petersburg, who died at the beginning of the 19th century. Xenia the Blessed has long been revered in St. Petersburg, although she was also a locally revered saint. In 1905, the southern limit of the Peterhof Cathedral of St. The Supreme Apostles Peter and Paul, was consecrated in the name of Blessed Kenya. At the beginning of the 19th century, a grave mound was simply poured onto the burial site of the deceased, but people who came to Blessed Xenia prayed, asked for her intercession and help, often took with them a little earth from her grave, and thus the hill gradually disappeared. The mound again heaped on the grave suffered the same fate. Then a stone slab was placed on the grave. But the stone slab was gradually dismantled into pieces and carried away by believers. Afterwards, it was decided to erect a chapel over the grave of the Blessed Xenia.

With donations from admirers of Blessed Xenia, a small chapel was built over her grave, made of basement stone, with two windows on the sides, an oak iconostasis on the eastern side and an iron door on the western side. Above the door on the outside there was an inscription: “Servant of God Ksenia.”

In 1902, according to the design of the architect A. A. Vseslavin, the current chapel was built in the pseudo-Russian style. The facade along the cornice is decorated with semicircular kokoshniks, the arches on the facade and on the extension are decorated with mosaic faces of Christ and Xenia of Petersburg, and the windows are stained glass icons. Each side of the façade is decorated with a group of four arched gabled windows with column struts. The building is crowned with a low scaly tent, topped with a gilded onion dome with a cross. Inside, the main decoration of the chapel is a marble iconostasis with a mosaic image of the crucified Christ and a tombstone.

In 1940, the chapel, together with the church in the name of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God located at the Smolensk cemetery, was closed. During the war, it housed a warehouse for containers for fuel and lubricants. Marble tiles from the tomb of Blessed Xenia were dismantled. Liturgical utensils and fragments of non-ferrous metals were melted down, and the icons of the chapel were burned.

In 1946, yielding to the persistent requests of believers, the chapel was allowed to open and renovate. From nine in the morning until nine in the evening, funeral services were held there in front of a large crowd of people. But this did not last long. In 1960, the chapel was closed again. In its premises, at the direction of the city authorities, they tried to set up a sculpture workshop, but it was impossible to work in it: when they arrived at the workshop in the morning, workers more than once found shards instead of sculptures.

The chapel stood desolate for a long time, boarded up and surrounded by a solid plank fence. However, pilgrims from all over the country came and came to Blessed Xenia, bringing her their troubles and aspirations.

In 1984, the chapel was transferred to the community of the temple in the name of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God. It was re-consecrated in 1987. In 1988, Xenia the Blessed was canonized and canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church. Patronal feast day: February 6 (January 24 of the Old Style). Blessed Xenia of Petersburg (XIX). Prayers and memorial services are served in the chapel every day.

On a marble plaque mounted on the wall of the chapel there is an inscription: In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. The servant of God, Blessed Ksenia Grigorieva, the wife of singer Andrei Fedorovich, is buried in this chapel. After leaving her husband for 26 years, she wandered for 45 years. In widowhood she was called by her husband's name: Andrei Fedorovich. Her total life on earth was 71 years. In 1794-1796, she took part in the construction of the Smolensk Church, secretly carrying bricks on her shoulders at night for the church under construction. “Whoever knew me, let him remember my soul for the salvation of his soul.” Amen.

Prayer of Ksenia of Petersburg for marriage and the gift of children

“Oh holy all-blessed mother Ksenia! Having lived under the protection of the Most High, led and strengthened by the Mother of God, having endured hunger and thirst, cold and heat, reproach and persecution, you have received the gift of clairvoyance and miracles from God and are resting in the shadow of the Almighty. Now the Holy Church, like a fragrant flower, glorifies you. Standing at the place of your burial, before your holy image, as if you were alive and present with us, we pray to you: accept our petitions and bring them to the throne of the merciful Heavenly Father, as you have boldness towards Him, ask for eternal salvation for those who flow to you, for good deeds and our undertakings are a generous blessing, deliverance from all troubles and sorrows. Stand before our All-Merciful Savior with your holy prayers for us, unworthy and sinners. Help, holy blessed mother Xenia, to illuminate the infants with the light of holy baptism and seal the gift of the Holy Spirit, to educate boys and girls in faith, honesty, fear of God and grant them success in learning; heal the sick and ailing, send down love and harmony to families, honor monastics to strive for good deeds and protect them from reproach, strengthen pastors in the strength of the Holy Spirit, preserve our people and country in peace and serenity, pray for those deprived of communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ in the dying hour. You are our hope and hope, quick hearing and deliverance, we send thanks to you and with you we glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen."

Prayer of Ksenia of Petersburg for love and health

“Oh, simple in your way of life, homeless on earth, but heir to the abodes of the Heavenly Father, blessed wanderer Xenia! Just as we previously fell into your tombstone of illness and sorrow and were filled with consolations, now we (names), overwhelmed by pernicious circumstances, resort to you and ask with hope: pray, O good heavenly God, that our steps may be corrected, according to the word of the Lord, to the doing of His commandments, and may the godless atheism that has captivated your city and your country, plunging us, many sinners, into mortal hatred of our brothers, proud self-indignation and blasphemous despair, be abolished. Oh, most blessed one of Christ, who has put to shame the vanity of this age, ask the Creator and Giver of all blessings to grant us humility, meekness and love in the treasure of our hearts, faith in strengthening prayer, hope in repentance, strength in a difficult life, merciful healing of our soul and body , chastity in marriage and caring for our neighbors and sincere ones, renewal of our entire life in the purifying bath of repentance, as we praise your memory with all praise, let us glorify in you the miracle worker, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the Trinity Consubstantial and Indivisible forever and ever.
