Temple of the Icon of the Mother of God “Inexhaustible Chalice”

famous for the fact that the St. Petersburg elder John Mironov serves there.

History[[edit]h2>

In the early 1990s of the twentieth century, a movement of Orthodox teetotalers formed in St. Petersburg. However, the work was complicated by the lack of a permanent temple. In 1995, a member of the Council of the Temperance Club, Sergei Evgenievich Vasiliev, director of the ATI plant, offered premises for the club to operate on the territory of the plant for a house church.

With God's help, the house church was built by 1997 and on March 13, the first secular service took place there.

On March 17, 1997, the new Church and Club “Wakefulness” was visited by Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga Vladimir, who blessed to consecrate the temple in the name of the icon of the Mother of God “Inexhaustible Chalice”. Thus, the beginning of the first Orthodox temperance center after 1917 was laid.

On January 27, 1998, mitred Archpriest John Mironov was appointed rector of the church in the name of the Icon of the Mother of God “Inexhaustible Chalice”. The number of parishioners increased sharply, so that not everyone who wanted could get into the temple. Therefore, in the same building, on the floor below, on October 1, 1998, construction began on a chapel in honor of the Petrograd holy martyrs Veniamin and Seraphim.

It is noteworthy that the throne in honor of these saints was the first in Russia. From the very beginning of construction, the support of the temple's heavenly patrons was felt. For example, the image of Christ Pantocrator on the reverse side was donated to the temple, the dedicatory inscription of St. Benjamin, made three days before the arrest, was preserved. Now this icon has become a revered shrine of the temple.

The granddaughter of the Hieromartyr Seraphim, Abbess Seraphim, being the abbess of the Novodevichy Convent in Moscow, having learned about the construction of a temple in honor of her grandfather, took an active part in its beautification. She donated several icons to the temple in memory of the holy martyr. This is, first of all, the image of Metropolitan Seraphim himself, a copy of the icon of Christ the Savior, painted by the saint, the image of St. Seraphim of Sarov, and the icon of the Tenderness of the Mother of God.

Through the prayers of Saints Benjamin and Seraphim, the construction was completed as quickly as possible in just five months. Many parishioners worked for free. On March 14, 1999, the first service took place in the new church.

“For 40 years I was the spiritual child of Father John”

Fate gave me two meetings with an amazing person in Georgia. October 2015 marked the 50th anniversary of his adoption of holy orders. Father had the opportunity to communicate with unique people, some of whom - Metropolitan Zinovy (Mazhuga), Rev. Confessor Gabriel (Urgebadze), Betan elders Archimandrite John (Maisuradze) and Archimandrite George (in schema John, Mkheidze) - were canonized.

We met Archimandrite Anthony (Guliashvili) in the “Russian” Church of St. Alexander Nevsky in Tbilisi, where we came to venerate the graves of the outstanding Glinsky elders - Metropolitan Zinovy and Schema-Archimandrite Vitaly (Sidorenko). Unhurried manners, muffled voice, excellent sense of humor, self-irony and irresistible human charm captivate from the first minute. He doesn't need to ask questions, he is a great storyteller. Enormous spiritual experience, love and condescension for people are evident in all his sayings and actions, and any topic is supplied with a commentary: “But the priest said...” Father Anthony many times a day turns to his confessor - Archimandrite John (Krestyankin) - as if he were alive , seeks his support and blessing in everything.

Archimandrite John (Krestyankin) with Archimandrite Anthony (Guliashvili)

Father passes by, takes mother by the hand: “Theodosyushka, come with me.” And he never saw her!

– For the first time I came to Pechory with a novice and with my mother, who was once categorically against my monasticism and priesthood. We wanted to get into the caves, but there were so many people that we couldn’t squeeze through. We are standing on Assumption Square and thinking: “Who will let us in there?” We suddenly hear: “Shu-shu-shu.” We look - they are leading some old man. His cell attendant is with him, now he is Archimandrite Philaret. And then the priest passes by, takes my mother’s hand and says: “Theodosyushka, come with me.” And he himself had never seen her. Mom says later: “My legs are paralyzed.” From then on, I began to go to my father for advice and guidance. And every time he asked: “How is mommy?” And in response to my complaints about her godlessness, he answered: “Nothing, nothing, she will still accept monasticism.” What monasticism! She didn’t even want to hear about the church. But in the end, the priest turned out to be right.

The path of her earthly life was coming to an end, I was very sad that my mother was far from God. Lent has arrived. Believe it or not, she didn’t put a crumb of food in her mouth for 48 days! 20–70 grams of water – that’s all. During this time, she received communion three times and took monastic vows five days before her death. I tonsured her myself with the blessing of His Holiness. And what’s important is that she asked me for forgiveness! And all this according to the priest’s prayers.

I had heart surgery 11 years ago, but it was unsuccessful. After such an operation, people come out on the tenth day, but I spent six months, 51 days in intensive care. One scientist came to me and said: “Show me a person who spent 51 days in intensive care.” They themselves were surprised. The professor who performed the operation called Father Tikhon (Shevkunov) and said: “Take the priest, he must die.” Father Tikhon called Father John, and he said: “No, he will not die.” And I was sure that I would not die, that’s what my father said.

And then, in the Holy Scripture there are the words: “I do not want the death of a sinner,” but I consider myself a sinner. But how long He will wait is no longer up to me. So here we live, we sin, we repent. And again we sin, and again we repent.

Father John has been very ill lately. I visited him several times. His cell attendant, Tatyana Sergeevna, says: “He’s really bad.” Father Filaret doesn’t want to let me in, but I stand my ground - that I need to see my father, I came for “gasoline, to the gas station”, I won’t leave empty. Father Filaret says: “Look at him: he’s crazy. Let's let him in." And they let me in. I visited him five days before his death. After the operation, I was forbidden to use earthly transport, but I flew.

He returned - and five days later there was a message about the death of the priest. I flew again. Either our plane was delayed or our train. Cold, minus 37 degrees below zero. I burst into tears: “Father, do you want me to be late?” But we managed to do everything. When we arrived, communion was still taking place. So I had time to serve and say goodbye.

And now, when I come there, I always leave so happy, so full. I didn’t experience this in sanatoriums. Mother lets me into his cell, where we sat on his sofa more than once. Until four, until five in the morning. Sometimes it happens that I leave happier than when he was alive. I also go to religious processions there. Every year I think: “What if this is the last time?”

The bells rang for the evening service, and we began to say goodbye to Father Anthony. He gave us prosphora and took our notes. When asked to take a photo at his father’s grave, Vitaly gladly agreed, he just asked him to wait and went to get a robe. I thought: here it is, patericon simplicity.

God works in mysterious ways. Another meeting with Father Anthony awaited me - in his house in the center of Tbilisi. One day the bell rang and Father Marina’s cell attendant said that he was inviting her to visit him. Surprised and delighted, I willingly accepted the invitation, and our conversation about Father John and not only about him continued in the ascetic cell of the Georgian archimandrite. A good-quality table, a simple narrow couch, an old large clock, many icons on the walls, and a lectern in front of them.

“Every day I read the prayer from the evening rule: “Lord, will this coffin really be my bed?” And next to my bed are six photographs of Father John. The last one is me at his deathbed. In difficult situations, turning to him, I say: “Father, why are you looking at me?! Don't you see how hard it is for me? Help." I ask as if I were alive. And I wake up in the morning with such tenderness, with such reverence. This is probably the only thing that helps us survive now.

He is already there, standing before God, and his prayer is strong. I always tell my children and loved ones: “We must try so that this path, ascending from earth to heaven, does not become overgrown with moss and weeds.”

At the gates of the Church of St. Alexander Nevsky

And so I want to say - not in terms of teaching - that reading the Psalter of St. Ephraim the Syrian helps me personally. Father read every day. I read three psalms every day. And every time I can’t help but be moved. I see myself in every psalm. Himself, who sadly admits his shortcomings, but insists that the Lord will help him.

We often say “Lord, have mercy,” but rarely “Lord, forgive me.” This is what you need to learn

Father loved to say: “Lord, have mercy, Lord, forgive.” So we often say “Lord, have mercy,” but rarely say “Lord, forgive me.” This is what you need to learn. Without any philosophy... To help others, no philosophy is needed.

I remember how Father John and I were returning after the service. When he saw people, he covered himself with his robe and tried to run faster. I told him: “Father John, look how many people want to communicate with you.” And he: “How can it be, I took communion. How am I going to splash the sacrament?” So he took care of what he received.

I don’t particularly strive to lean on relics or other shrines in order to receive healing. But what about those people who are far, far away and who do not have the financial opportunity to come, for example, to Diveevo? Well, they won’t receive grace from Seraphim of Sarov? I don’t like it when people stand around the icon for hours. He comes up to the icon and stands near it: tutu-tutu. I want to venerate the icon, but I can’t. Then I gently explain: “Darling, if you, being far away, beg this image, it will help you from here and there”...

In Father Anthony's cell

You know how the Lord Himself says: “Not everyone who says to Me, “Lord, Lord,” will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven, but only he who does My will.” We, no one, can do the will of God as necessary. But due to our weakness, the Lord will probably forgive us.

Maybe I’ll say something blasphemous, but, you know... in the altar, when the priests receive the Body of Christ, they say: “Christ is in our midst,” but if it were really from the heart, then few of us would be worthy of this gift . After all, it happens that they do not talk to each other, but say: “Christ is among us.” This already instills some doubt in the hearts of people who have just come to the Church of Christ. The Lord in Himself is Love. How can such a priest say to a parishioner: “How do you fulfill the commandment of love?” The parishioner will answer: “Father, how do you fulfill this commandment?”

It’s good if a person is a deeply religious person and understands that he has come to church to see God. What about a person of little faith? He will say: “What will such a priest teach me if he himself does not fulfill the commandments?” One must be able to see the difference between a temple and a servant in the temple. But the good shepherd cannot behave like that. This is how mercenaries behave.

We must remember that we come to church not to the priest, but to God. And the priest is only an intercessor before God

I often think: “What if we have to endure some kind of trial? What if we act like mercenaries? It is very difficult. All our parishioners need to understand well that we come to church not to the priest, but to God. And the priest is only an intercessor before God for us. If we confess, we must believe that we are not confessing to a priest, he is only a witness to our confession, to the words that I said during confession. Under the epitrachelion, in front of the Gospel and the cross.

I say to the crucified Lord: “I take part in Your crucifixion, because I violated everything that is written in the Gospel.” We often don't understand this.

Archimandrite Anthony (Guliashvili)

Father John advised confession twice a month. I advise my parishioners to write down their sins without delay. And before confession, go over all your sins and take a note with you. And you will have a cheat sheet in your hands. If necessary, you can confess every week, in some cases every day.

There was a time when they started asking me questions about new passports. I decided to go and consult with my father. And we had an agreement: before arriving, I had to call. If “amen” means I’m going. If “no,” then I put it off. And here I come without calling. I tell him about the reason for my visit, and he responds: “But I think that you are a believer!..” To be honest, I was a little offended. How is it possible: I’ve been going to my father for so many years, and suddenly he answers me like that?!

He said: “This piece of paper only testifies to who you are, how old you are; You can put it in your suitcase and under your pillow. And God is right here in your heart.” And he gave the example of Saint Ignatius the God-Bearer. This is how my father taught us. And we, all of his children, are going through this now. But my experiences immediately end in the cave. When I get there, I go to the cave, cry with the priest, and that’s it. Everything I have, everything I am guided by, is all from my father. I have nothing of my own.

There is no need to be afraid of anything. I know that I am a citizen of this state, and it is my direct responsibility to comply with the statutes of my state. Until a certain point. If they tell me that I must renounce God, then no longer. So don't be afraid.

Before Father John, I had a good mentor - Patriarch Ephraim. Before my eyes I saw his severity, exactingness, asceticism. Recently, one mother brings a 15-year-old boy and complains that he rarely goes to church. And he is the only believer in the whole class. One of 35 people! He confesses and receives communion. When he fasts, he refuses to use the computer. After all, now the computer has turned the whole world upside down. For the worse. When Father John was asked a question about the computer, he said: the computer should serve you, and not you the computer. Through the computer I can find out valuable historical information, but I can also get dirty information. In order to select the right information, the Lord gave me his computer - his head. So think about what is good and what is bad.

Archimandrite Anthony (Guliashvili)

Previously, photography was strictly prohibited during the Eucharistic Canon. I remember how Patriarch Pimen took a camera from one person and stomped his feet. Well, you can take a photo with the priest as a souvenir, take a photo of the icon as a souvenir, but not during the Liturgy, during the Eucharistic canon, when people pray - and you walk around with this camera. You are disturbing the beauty of the service. And the praying person cannot concentrate. I think everything should be done in moderation. Then there will be fewer sins. We need to learn this. We must strive to be a good Orthodox person. And the Lord will help.

You have two books “Unholy Saints” on your desk. One is with a dedicatory inscription from Bishop Tikhon (Shevkunov): “To my dear and beloved Father Anthony, asking for holy prayers.”

And now Father John with his prayer protects me, and you, and everyone who turns to him

“We have been friends with Bishop Tikhon for a long time, we had the same confessor who taught us not to be afraid of anything. And now with his prayer he protects me, and you, and everyone who turns to him. This is our spiritual life, our prayer communication.

After saying goodbye to Father Anthony, I asked his cell attendant Marina about his main quality. She answered without hesitation: “He is very compassionate towards all those who suffer. For example, in my family, I’m used to having everything in reserve, but he opens the refrigerator, sees the extra stuff and shouts: “What are you hiding! People around are hungry!” Or I’ll tell someone’s problem (my friend had surgery, for example), he will immediately equip me with help... And there are a lot of such examples that can be given.”

Archpriest John Mironov[[edit]h2>

Elder John Mironov
Mitred Archpriest John Mironov was born on November 25, 1926 in the village of Shabany, Ostrovsky district, Pskov region, into a family of wealthy peasants. No matter what church Father John served in, people were always drawn to him, finding in him a sympathetic, kind-hearted shepherd. For his zealous service to the Lord and people, Father John was repeatedly awarded with church awards - from a legguard to a Patriarchal charter. He bears the highest rank among the white clergy - the title of mitred archpriest. Since February 1, 1993, Father John has served as rector of the church in the name of the icon of the Mother of God “Inexhaustible Chalice”. Here, in the premises provided by the ATI plant, hundreds of people flock weekly to akathist services and liturgy.

Under the spiritual leadership of Father Ioann Mironov, the parish of the “Inexhaustible Chalice” church at the ATI plant became an all-Russian sobriety center in the country. For the last three years in a row, Orthodox teetotalers in St. Petersburg have held a religious procession in January in memory of the holy martyr Boniface, in which up to a thousand people take part. The significance of this prayer work for our city cannot be overestimated.

In any given matter, Father John is the first mentor and adviser, a good shepherd, praying for us and helping everyone with the power of his prayer, no matter who turns to him for help.

War time

September 1941 brought with it occupation. The Mironov family needed (like others) to leave the lands occupied by the enemy. They began to make their way into the territory of the Pskov region.

The difficult journey along the front line brought the family many hardships and problems. Nobody wanted to help the refugees, so getting to the right place had great difficulty.

A turning point in the war had passed, and German troops began their retreat. During this period, life became even more terrible. Tragedies multiplied, hundreds and thousands of people died in the camps. When the Germans left, young John was only 17 years old. He was sent to fight at the front, where the guy became an artilleryman.

Mironov never hid behind his colleagues and acted openly. For his services, he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd degree. When the war ended, John was awarded the medal “For Victory over Germany.”

Social service[[edit]h2>

Working with alcohol and drug addicts[[edit]h3>

Currently, there are a small number of Orthodox sobriety societies and societies of Orthodox education that would use in their work the patristic experience and Russian national spiritual traditions, such as the St. Petersburg Orthodox Club “Wakefulness” in the name of the holy martyr Boniface, operating at the temple “Inexhaustible Chalice” at the ATI plant.

The blessing for the activities of Orthodox teetotalers was given on February 17, 1993 by Metropolitan John of St. Petersburg and Ladoga. At the same time, he decided on the name of the club - “Wakefulness”. Vladyka John blessed the work of establishing a sober way of life with the words of the Apostle Peter: “Be sober and watchful, because your adversary the devil walks around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Pet. 5:8). With the blessing of Metropolitan John, the program of classes of the “Wakefulness” club was officially registered in the diocesan Chancellery (registration number 124 of 02/24/93), and the club itself was officially registered on 09/06/94 (registration number 932).

Metropolitan Vladimir, when visiting the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Inexhaustible Chalice” on March 17, 1997, also gave his blessing to the activities of the Orthodox club “Wakefulness”, in whose premises a Temperance School operates.

The Temperance School provides assistance to people suffering from tobacco smoking, alcoholism, drug addiction, unhealthy effects on the senses and other bad addictions. Active preventive work is underway. Help is provided to those who have lost contact with the Faith of the Fathers - Orthodoxy, as well as family members of suffering people.

In the Orthodox understanding, bad addiction has not only a psychophysiological aspect. The roots of addiction to intoxicants and unhealthy effects on the senses are in the spiritual sphere of man. The Orthodox holistic view of man makes it possible to reveal the underlying causes of diseases such as alcoholism and drug addiction, and makes it possible to heal not only the body and soul, but also to improve the spiritual state of the sufferer. Spiritual healing takes place in a spiritual hospital - the Church.

On the path to spiritual healing, spiritual support based on the experience and Orthodox traditions of the Russian people is extremely important - both for the suffering person and for his family members.

The temperance school provides spiritual and psychological assistance to people, regardless of their nationality, religious and political beliefs.

School opening hours: Tuesday from 18:30, Thursday at 17:00.
