Temple of the Holy Chief Apostles Peter and Paul

in Yasenevo - the Orthodox church of the Paraskeva-Pyatnitsky deanery of the Moscow city diocese. Since February 1997, it has been the Moscow metochion of the Holy Vvedensky Stavropegic Monastery of Optina Pustyn.

History[edit]

In the village of Yasenevo that was here (which has been mentioned since the 14th century precisely as a village, that is, there was already a church in it then) there were several Orthodox churches: in 1626 a wooden church in the name of St. mcc. Faith, Hope, Love and their mother Sophia, in 1674 a new two-story Church of the Sign of the Blessed Virgin Mary was erected next to the old one.

The current building of the temple was erected in 1751-1753 in the Elizabethan (late) Baroque style and consecrated in the name of the holy supreme apostles Peter and Paul. The owner of the village was then Feodor Avraamovich Lopukhin (†1767; grandson of the boyar Fedor (Illarion) Abramovich Lopukhin, father-in-law of Tsar Peter I, son of Abram Fedorovich Lopukhin, executed on November 9, 1718 in the case of Tsarevich Alexei); under him, the Yasenevo estate was built near the temple and a park with alleys and ponds was laid out.

Initially, the stone temple consisted of one (current eastern) cube-shaped volume of a cold central aisle, with an 8-sided drum cut through by 8 windows and topped with a dome.

On July 9, 1822, in the church of the village of Yaseneva, the wedding of Princess Maria Nikolaevna Volkonskaya and Lieutenant Colonel Nikolai Ilyich Tolstoy, the parents of the writer Leo Tolstoy, took place.

During the period of Yasenev's ownership by Prince Sergei Ivanovich Gagarin, the temple was reconstructed. In 1832, a warm side chapel was added to it in honor of St. VMC. Varvara (the heavenly patroness of the prince's wife) and the bell tower. In 1860-1865, another reconstruction was carried out, correcting the identified shortcomings of the previous one. As a result, the Church of Peter and Paul acquired an appearance that has survived to this day: the architecture of the temple was brought to the type of three-part axial symmetrical composition “temple - vestibule - bell tower,” the most common among Russian churches of the Classical era.

The temple had 3 altars: the central one in the name of the holy apostles Peter and Paul (the antimension was consecrated on February 26, 1826), the southern one in honor of St. Sergius of Radonezh (the antimension was consecrated by St. Philaret (Drozdov) on October 20, 1861), and the northern one in honor of the Holy Great Martyr Barbara (the antimension was consecrated Bishop Nikolai of Dmitrov in 1832).

In the 1930s, the temple, which by that time was already used as a state farm warehouse, was closed (the painting of the temple has not been preserved). In 1973-1976. it was externally restored, crosses were erected on the temple and bell tower. Moreover, the entire territory of the temple, enclosed by a fence, belonged to the auto repair base and its warehouses.

In 1989, the church and the clergy house were transferred to the Orthodox community; a parish was established. The first rector of the temple was Archpriest Alexander Toropov.

Origin of the name and its meaning

The Church of Peter and Paul in Yasenevo was consecrated on February 26, 1826 in honor of the most revered supreme apostles in Russia, called by Jesus Christ to preach the Gospel throughout the world. Before meeting the Lord, Saint Peter was a poor fisherman, and then, while walking among his closest disciples, he witnessed the miraculous Transfiguration of the Lord on Mount Tabor.

Before his conversion to Christianity, the Apostle Paul belonged to the Pharisees and persecutors of the faith.

It is amazing what the Lord appeared to him on the road to Damascus. After baptism, he became a zealous preacher of the Gospel among the pagans of the whole world. His numerous messages have not lost their relevance to this day; they teach believers the basics of Christian life.

Both apostles endured much suffering and misfortune while carrying the Gospel, and after their arrest they ended their lives in Rome. Peter suffered martyrdom on the cross. Sex by beheading with a sword.

Current state[edit]

Since February 1997, the temple has been transferred to the Moscow courtyard of the Vvedensky stauropegial monastery of Optina Pustyn.

On November 23, 2009, the funeral service for priest Daniil Sysoev, who was killed on November 20, took place in the church. The funeral service was led by Archbishop Arseny of Istra; deans of the city of Moscow and many representatives of the Moscow clergy took part in the service.

The central altar [of the temple was consecrated in honor of St. App. Peter and Paul, the left limit is in honor of the Great Church. Barbarians, right limit - in honor of St. Sergius of Radonezh. The side altar of the temple was consecrated in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “The Sign”.

The church has a Sunday school, a brotherhood for helping prisoners, a patronage service, and a library of Orthodox literature. A children's choir participates in festive services.

At the Church of the Holy Chief Apostles Peter and Paul in Yasenevo there are two attached churches:

  • Church of the Resurrection of Christ at the boarding house for labor veterans No. 6
  • Temple of the Holy Blessed Prince Peter and Princess Fevronia, Murom Wonderworkers, at the Yasenevo Integrated Center for Social Services for the Population

Facts and shrines

Tsar Peter the Great spent a long time in Yasenevo from a young age and remembered this village well. At the end of the last century, guests were shown an oak tree, under which, according to legends, the young emperor loved to sit in thought. Leo Tolstoy’s parents got married in the Cathedral of Peter and Paul, and the writer’s sister Maria, a nun of the Shamordino Monastery, was subsequently buried in the cemetery next to the church.

The cleric of the temple was the famous preacher Metropolitan Daniil Sysoev, who was killed in the fall of 2008. It was in this church that a memorial service was held for the repose of the priest.

The cathedral is known in the Christian world for a large number of shrines; the relics are located here:

  • History of the Church of Peter and Paul

The village of Yasinovskoye has existed since the 13th century. According to the documents, it is established that Ivan Kalita bequeathed it to his son Andrei, from whom it passed to Vladimir the Brave. Yasenevo was part of the independent Zvenigorod principality, which belonged to Vasily the Dark and his sons, and later became a palace village where Ivan the Terrible, Boris Godunov, and Peter I lived.

He enjoyed the attention and favor of Patriarch Filaret Romanov, who built a new temple here. After his death, Yasenevo was transferred to the protopope of the Annunciation Church, who was close to Patriarch Ananya. In addition, the property briefly passes to the royal favorite, Prince Alexei Lvov, and after his death returns to the possession of the royal court.

Peter I fell in love with these places since childhood and even planned to create a summer royal residence here. At the beginning of the 17th century, the favorite of the Tsar Yasenevo was introduced to Lopukhin. The estate was a rich estate of extraordinary beauty with a park and regular alleys, a marble pond and a huge orchard.

Subsequently, the property was inherited by Abraham Lopukhin, the great-grandson of the first wife of Peter I, who was arrested and executed on charges of conspiracy against the Tsar. In the 18th century, the village passed to the eldest son Fyodor Avraamovich, who began a radical reconstruction of the heritage.

It was under him that the planned park complex with ponds and alleys, as well as the architectural ensemble of the estate, was formed. In addition, he was a God-loving landowner and more than once asked to build a new stone church on his beloved estate, but permission was received only during the reign of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna.

The baroque church was built in two years; already in 1753, the consecration of the Peter and Paul Cathedral took place and regular events began.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the estate was transferred by royal decree to the princes Gagarin, who moved into secular society and the famous literary circles of Pushkin, Odoevsky, Vyazemsky, Krylov, Tyutchev and Turgenev. Their domain was visited by many writers and poets, including the famous Zhukovsky and Davydov. It is to Prince Sergei Ivanovich that the cathedral owes its true appearance.

The process of reconstructing the cold, cube-shaped church, which began under him in 1832, added a warm aisle. At the same time, a bell tower was added to the church. The temple in honor of the holy apostles Peter and Paul acquired its completed form of a three-part axial composition during the reconstruction in 1860 according to the design of the architect Kalugin, who successfully combined Russian baroque with the symmetry of classicism.

Church of Peter and Paul in Yasenevo in the photo today.

After the death of Prince Gagarin in 1862, the estate was inherited by his daughter Buturlina, second cousin of the poet A.S. Pushkin, and his sons remained Yasenev’s masters until the revolution. With the advent of Soviet power, the estate was set on fire, and a warehouse was set up in the surviving church for a repair base.

Today this place is filled with a modern residential area of a huge metropolis, and all the more remarkable is the ancient Church of Peter and Paul in the center.

Current status of the Church of Peter and Paul

The Peter and Paul Church in Yasenevo was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Orthodox Church in 1989 as a parish church, and since 1997 the courtyard of the Stavropegial Monastery of Optina Pustyn in Moscow has been formed here. The building underwent a major restoration with the replacement of the destroyed foundation. The completely lost frescoes of the temple have been replaced with new wall paintings.

The monks, together with the parishioners, landscaped the surrounding area, laid out beautiful flower beds and flower beds, and planted ornamental shrubs. Today the church community has more than 700 permanent parishioners. Everyone actively participates in prayer and sacrificial service.

The clergy and the parish community actively interact in the following areas:

    1. The clergy of the Peter and Paul Cathedral look after the orphanage in Yasenevo, as well as a boarding school for the elderly and disabled.
    2. The yard provides financial and material assistance with food and goods to low-income parish families.
    3. Active educational and missionary activities are carried out.
    4. The creation of a library of Orthodox literature is nearing completion.
    5. The Nazareth pilgrimage service is held in the courtyard, and regular trips to the Optina Monastery are organized, as well as to shrines in Russia and abroad.
    6. Support for prisoners.
    7. Catechism activities.
    8. He works with young people in the Pokrovskaya organization.”

The parishioners of the temple formed a large and close-knit community. They happily organize festive events for local residents, organize folklore performances and performances, and even have their own village musical ensemble and choreographic studio.

And guests of the holiday are happy to participate not only in organized dinners with treats, but also in charity fairs, the funds of which go to numerous needs of the parish’s social activities.
