Church of the All-Merciful Savior in Kuskovo

- parish church, also known as the Church of the Origin of the Honest Trees of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord. Brief summary

History[edit]

According to archival documents, the parish church of the All-Merciful Savior - the Origin of the Honest Trees of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord in the village of Kuskovo was first mentioned in 1510. Its ensemble also included a bell tower and a church wing. As for the land, there were only 33 acres at the Temple, “these lands are in the undisputed possession of the clergy.” Of these, “about seven dessiatines” were leased for the Sheremetev estate. All owners of the estate regularly paid ruga (rent).

In 1737-1739, Count Pyotr Borisovich Sheremetev, with the blessing of the Holy Synod, rebuilt the parish church of the All-Merciful Savior from a wooden three-altar church to a stone single altar church.

The temple had a rich interior decoration, including a unique carved iconostasis with precious stones and pearls.

From 1739 until the 30s of the 20th century, the Church remained a parish church. St. Philaret Drozdov, now canonized, St. Innocent Veniaminov, the enlightener of the Aleuts and Siberia, now canonized, and St. Macarius of Nevsky, now canonized, performed divine services in it.

While visiting the Sheremetev estate, royal persons also prayed in the Church of the All-Merciful Savior in Kuskovo, among them: Empresses Elizaveta Petrovna and Catherine II, Emperors Alexander III and Nicholas II with their heir.

There is information that Empress Elizaveta Petrovna, who had an estate in neighboring Perovo, personally embroidered airs and covers for the Church of the All-Merciful Savior in Kuskovo.

Soon after the revolution, the Sheremetev estate was nationalized and a museum was organized in it. The Church of the All-Merciful Savior in Kuskovo, which was closed in 1930, was transferred to his jurisdiction.

During Soviet times, the Temple was used as an auxiliary building for the needs of the museum.

In 1991, the parish church of the All-Merciful Savior in Kuskovo was opened to museum visitors as the “house church of the Kuskovo estate.”

In 1992, by decree of His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II, Priest Igor Chekharin was appointed acting rector of the newly opened Church of the All-Merciful Savior in Kuskovo, and in the same year a local religious organization was registered: the Orthodox Parish of the Temple of the Origin of the Honest Trees of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord in Kuskovo. Moscow.

On August 14, 1998, Bishop Alexy (Frolov) of Orekhovo-Zuevsky performed the rite of minor consecration of the Temple. At the same time, the Temple remained under the jurisdiction of the museum, and therefore it was not possible to hold regular services.

History of creation

In the northwestern district of Moscow, a beautiful golden-domed structure was erected. This significant event took place in 2012. The day of the consecration of the cathedral was April 6 , then Patriarch Kirill was personally present at the ceremony.
And already on August 14, under the arches of the building, the first holy liturgy in its history took place. For a long time, reconstruction work was carried out in the cathedral and the surrounding area, which was completed only in 2016. Then the church was transferred under the patronage of the Patriarchal Metochion. Milestones of history

Everyone knows the name of this temple, but not everyone knows the history with which the appearance of this great holiday is associated. The temple was named after him at one time. The main holiday of the founding of this temple is the erection of the Cross of the Lord , which is traditionally celebrated every year September 27 or 14 according to the old calendar. This holiday first appeared in the 14th century, when the holy cross was discovered.

This happened by order of Emperor Constantine, when his mother Helen went in search of the holy tree from which this cross was carved. Excavations were carried out not far from the execution site. There they found several nails and strange inscriptions that testified to events long gone in the past. Soon they found the cross of the Lord. Its miraculous properties manifested themselves when a woman who was near death was suddenly healed by touching him. People began to worship the cross, and thus, the holiday of the salvation of the cross was formed, in honor of the return of the shrine to the holy lands of Jerusalem. This happened on September 14, when they began to celebrate this great holiday.

The holiday is the twentieth and has a rich history. It is customary to celebrate it not just for one day, but for a whole week. Typically, holy liturgies and chants are held from September 13 to September 21.

Hard times

During the period of Bolshevism, the Church of the All-Merciful Savior on Novoslobodskaya, the photo of which impresses with its beauty, suffered like most other religious shrines. And since the 30s of the last century, an educational institution was located here.

Over the long years of Soviet power, church property was taken away and it was not possible to return it. Moreover, they destroyed all samples of wall painting, demolished the domes, and did not spare the bell ringing.

When the building was later handed over to Stankin, he fully intended to completely dismantle the structure. The public saved the temple from this criminal idea. The sculptor Tomskoy played a big role in this.

Schedule

Various rites and ceremonies, as well as services, are held in the temple every day, the schedules of which you can see below.

  • From Monday to Friday, the church holds Divine Liturgy every day at 9 am.
  • Every Wednesday at 6 p.m. Vespers is held with the singing of the Akathist to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

Description of the attraction

Today, the Church of the All-Merciful Savior on Novoslobodskaya, whose address in Moscow is Novoslobodskaya Street, building 58, building 5, continues to be repaired in accordance with the project of the Restoration Institute. Cosmetic work was carried out to repair the facade, the roof was covered with copper.

Restorers found surviving examples of the missing window grilles and created new ones. The style of the temple is made in the spirit of the 17th century. This large-scale unplastered cathedral, whose brick walls are painted red, has a significant urban planning role.

The building dominates among the buildings that fill Novoslobodskaya Street. Thanks to the temple, the panorama of this area has a complete look. The dominant role of this structure in the ensemble of monasteries is also undeniable. It is surrounded by similar-style buildings and other temples.

After the events of the past, the building never acquired a completed bell tower.
