Temple in honor of the holy martyrs Vera, Nadezhda, Lyubov and their mother Sophia at the Miusskoe cemetery

- Orthodox church of the Trinity Deanery of the Moscow Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. Metochion of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus'. Representation of the Metropolitan District of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Republic of Kazakhstan. It is an architectural monument.

History[edit]

The temple in honor of the holy martyrs Vera, Nadezhda, Lyubov and their mother Sophia at the Miussky cemetery was founded in the second half of the 18th century.

The Miusskoe cemetery was established during the plague epidemic of 1770-1771 behind the Kamer-Kollezhsky Val near the Miusa area, from which it took its name. The origin of the name of the area is interesting: Miusy (Miusskoe field) has been known since the end of the 18th century, when it was adapted for storage and sale of timber (in the 19th century the area was called Miusskaya Lesnaya). There is a version that during construction in 1696. Peter I at the mouth of the Mius River (on the Sea of Azov) created a new harbor here that could house a warehouse of materials for it. At the same time, there is a legend that Stepan Razin’s associate Cossack Miyuska was executed here. Some researchers derive this name from the Turkic language (myus, muyuz - “horn, “corner”).

At the Miusskoe cemetery, merchants, artisans and townspeople from neighboring areas - Butyrki and Maryina Roshcha - were mainly buried.

The first small wooden church in the name of the holy martyrs Vera, Nadezhda, Lyubov and Sophia was consecrated here on January 20, 1773.

In 1823, at the expense of the merchant I.P. Kozhevnikov, instead of a wooden one, a stone one was built in the Empire style (architect A.F. Elkinsky).

The rite of consecration of the temple was performed by Saint Philaret (Drozdov), Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna.

In 1834, chapels were built on the sides in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “The Sign” and St. Mitrophan of Voronezh at the expense of guard ensign Alexandra Abramovna Neronova. Later, on the side of the western façade above the chapels, symmetrically to the main axis of the temple, two single-tier bell towers were erected. However, in 1912, the temple was rebuilt again - the refectory was expanded, and a four-tier bell tower was erected.

In the early 1920s, St. Tikhon, Patriarch of All Russia, served in the church several times.

In 1922, church valuables were confiscated from surviving churches and monasteries. The destruction of the temple at the Miussky cemetery took place on April 5, when “4 pounds 4 pounds 25 spools of gold and silver items” were confiscated.

On January 1, 1933, in the Church of St. Faith, Nadezhda, Lyubov and their mother Sophia were served at the Miussky cemetery by “living churchmen”1: (GARF. F. r-5263. Op. 1)

In 1934, the temple was closed, the cross was knocked off, and the bell tower was broken down to the first tier. Behind the apses, on the sides of the dome and above the refectory, ugly extensions were made. The building of the temple houses the equipment workshop “Meduchposobie” of the Ministry of Health of the RSFSR.

The temple was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1990, and services were resumed here on September 28. Under the leadership of the rector of the temple, Archpriest Boris Prisyazhnyuk (+2011), the architectural and artistic appearance of the temple of the early twentieth century was recreated. The roof was replaced, which is now completely covered with copper, icons in icon cases took their place in the temple, and the walls were painted.

Since 2012, the temple has been the Patriarchal Compound.

On March 14, 2012, by order of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus', a representative office of the Metropolitan District of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Republic of Kazakhstan was opened at the Church of the Holy Martyrs Faith, Hope, Love and their mother Sophia at the Miusskoye Cemetery in Moscow.2

By decree of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Metropolitan District, Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, was appointed rector of the church - the Patriarchal Metochion at the Miussky Cemetery.

From the history of the temple in Miussy

Mostly craftsmen, townspeople and merchants from nearby areas - Maryina Roshcha and Butyrok - were buried at the Miusskoe cemetery.

The first church near the cemetery was wooden. It was consecrated in 1773 in honor of the patroness Catherine II (the Empress, during her coronation, made a vow that she would build a shrine in Moscow in the name of those saints whose memorial day fell during the coronation).

In 1823, on the site of the old one, a stone church was erected in the name of the martyrs Vera, Nadezhda, Lyubov and their mother Sophia. The funds were donated by the merchant Kozhevnikov.

A little later, extensions were made to the temple - two chapels. They were built at the expense of A. Neronov, a guard ensign. Then two bell towers in one tier appeared near the temple - they were located symmetrically to the central axis of the church.

In 1912, the refectory was significantly expanded, an almshouse and a new four-tier bell tower were built.

Shrines of the temple and schedule of services

Today the temple is operational. Quite a large number of Orthodox believers come to him every day. There are many shrines in the temple. Namely:

  • relics of St. martyrs Vera, Nadezhda, Lyubov and Sophie their mothers,
  • Tervenic icon of the Mother of God,
  • particles of forty saints of God and many others.

You can venerate before the particles of the martyrs every day, and on the Feast of the Intercession the Tervenic Icon of the Virgin Mary is taken out into the courtyard for veneration. Divine Liturgies are read in the church daily on weekdays at 8:00 am, and on holiday weekends at 7:00 and 17:00.

Once every two weeks on Sundays, a prayer service to the Mother of God is read and water blessing is held at 18:00. After the reading of the Liturgy, parishioners can order prayer services and memorial services.

Temple of Faith, Hope, Love and Sophia at the Miusskoe cemetery

Temple of Faith, Hope, Love and Sophia at the Miusskoe cemetery

so named in the name of the heavenly patroness of Empress Catherine the Great (née Sophia). The reason for the construction of this temple was the terrible plague epidemic that broke out in Moscow in 1770-1771. So many people were dying that there were not enough places in the city cemeteries. To avoid the spread of infection, new cemeteries outside the city limits began to be opened in the Mother See. One of these was Miusskoe, which received its name from the area in which it was located. Mostly residents of Maryina Roshcha and Butyrok were buried here.

In Moscow, the dead were usually buried at churches, so with the founding of a new cemetery, a chapel or small temple was immediately built. The church at the Miusskoe cemetery was consecrated in honor of MC. Sophia and her three daughters - Vera, Nadezhda and Lyubov on January 20, 1773, entrusting supervision of her to V.I. Bazhenov.

Half a century later, in 1821, on the initiative of the merchant Ivan Kozhevnikov (buried at the Miussky cemetery) and at his own expense (he donated about 6,000 rubles), instead of a dilapidated wooden church in the same place, they began to build a stone temple in the Empire style according to the design of the famous architect A. Elkinsky. A rotunda on a quadrangle with a semicircular apse and a refectory - this is how the temple originally looked. Metropolitan of Moscow Philaret (Drozdov) consecrated the church in the name of saints Faith, Hope, Love and their mother Sophia on May 29, 1823.

Wedding in the temple

In 1834-1835 Guard ensign A. Neronova made a donation for the construction of two chapels - in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “The Sign” and in the name of St. Mitrofan of Voronezh. Somewhat later, two symmetrical single-tier bell towers were erected above the chapels on the western side. The temple began to resemble Catherine II’s favorite cathedral - Trinity - in the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg.

The miraculous icon “Quick to Hear”

Further, the temple expanded more and more. In 1898, construction of the church library began; in 1912, the refectory was expanded and a four-tier bell tower was erected in the classicist style, and an almshouse was built nearby.

After the October Revolution, the Church of Faith, Hope, Love and their mother Sophia suffered the fate of other churches. In the 1920s, the newly elected Patriarch Tikhon often served here (the last time in 1925); in 1922, valuables were expropriated from the temple, and in the early 1930s it was completely closed. The cross was knocked down, the upper tiers of the bell tower were dismantled, several ugly industrial extensions were built around, placing a workshop for the production of medical textbooks in the temple building.

Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God

In 1990, the disfigured and desecrated church building was returned to the believers, who immediately patiently set about restoring the temple in the forms of the early twentieth century.

Nowadays the temple has been practically restored; it houses several especially revered shrines. One of them is the myrrh-streaming icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear.” Myrrh began to flow out in 1997. And although, several years later, the myrrh flow stopped, people to this day receive help and deliverance from the wonderful icon.

Since 2012, the Temple of Faith, Hope, Love and Sophia at the Miusskoe cemetery

is the Patriarchal Compound, Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan was appointed rector there, who gave the temple another revered image of the Mother of God - a copy of the miraculous Theodore Icon, an assistant in childbirth.

The temple was returned to believers only in 1990

The temple was returned to believers in 1992, and services began almost immediately. The restoration of the temple was given to the rector of the temple, Archpriest Boris Prisyazhnik.

The appearance of the temple at the beginning of the 20th century was recreated. The roof was completely replaced, the walls were painted, and the icons were placed in their rightful places.

There is no point in saying anything about this wonderful man. Boris was born into the family of a simple worker. He lost so many as a child. The father died in the war, the Germans burned the hut in which the younger sister died. Some time later, another sister dies of pneumonia.

Boris's mother helped the monks, and they sent Boris to school, and then to study at a theological school. After graduation, Boris was married to the girl Zinaida Ershova.

Archpriest Boris Prisyazhnyuk was the first to restore the Church of Faith, Hope of Love after destruction. Reposed on September 1, 2011

Father Boris was sent to restore the Church of Faith, Hope, Love in Moscow. He loved this temple very much and performed divine services with love in his heart.

Until the end of the priest’s life, mother was his companion and assistant throughout his entire life’s journey. She sang in the church choir and helped Father Boris in the construction of the temple.

They raised 3 children together. Father Boris was a very modest man, he had a strange talent - to listen endlessly. He constantly and for a long time talked with his parishioners in the temple. He accepted everything with love, no matter who approached him.

Unfortunately, on September 1, this wonderful soul of a man passed away to the Lord. On September 3, 2011, the Divine Liturgy along with the funeral service was performed by His Grace Tikhon, Bishop of Podolsk.

Many sent telegrams of condolences, one of which was even His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus':

Kirill

His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus'

“I received with sorrow the news of the death of the revivalist and long-time rector of the Church of Faith of Hope of Love and Sophia at the Miusskoe cemetery in Moscow, Archpriest Boris Prisyazhnyuk...”

On March 14, 2012, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' ordered that a representative office of the Metropolitan District of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Republic of Kazakhstan be opened at the Church of the Holy Martyrs Faith, Hope, Love and their mother Sophia at the Miusskoe cemetery in Moscow.

Afterwards, the Patriarch appointed the head of the Metropolitan District, Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, as rector of the church.

Metropolitan Alexander is a bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church. Metropolitan of Astana and Kazakhstan, head of the Kazakhstan Metropolitan District. It was he who was appointed rector of the Church of Faith, Hope, Love in Moscow

Metropolitan Alexander was baptized in honor of the holy noble prince Alexander Nevsky. As a gift to the temple, he presented a copy of the icon of the miraculous Mother of God “Feodorovskaya”.

The miraculous image of the Mother of God “Feodorovskaya”. It was this image that Metropolitan Alexander, rector of the Church of Faith, Hope, Love and their mother Sophia, presented to the temple

As a gift to the temple, the rector, Metropolitan Alexander, presented the ark with the right hand of the venerable confessor Schema-Archimandrite Sebastian, the elder of Karaganda.

In the same year, he donated to the temple particles of the relics of the holy venerable martyrs Seraphim and Theognostus of Alma-Ata.

Story

Construction work on the construction of the shrine began in the early 90s. It is a kind of branch of the Intercession Convent, located in one of the courtyards of St. Petersburg. The parishioners took care of its arrangement. Along with the construction, a sisterhood was also organized in the monastery. Women who wanted to change their usual lifestyle to a monastic one could live and work in it.

This became the basis for the creation of a convent, the construction of which was completed in the late 90s. The Church of the Holy Martyrs in St. Petersburg is considered a national church. All this is because everything in it was made independently by the parishioners and sisters of the monastery. It is also very important that through the church itself there is a connection between the monastery and the big city, which is simply necessary to ensure normal life.
