- Rules for going to bed Reading the last three surahs
- Reading the verse “The Throne”
- Reading dua
- Reading the last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah
Sleep was given by the Almighty to his slaves as a blessing, as a time given for a person to rest from a hard day of work and gather strength for a new day.
The Almighty has entrusted sleep to people as an amanat (entrusted matter), and we must protect this amanat and try in any way to protect it from the evil that the shaitan can bring to it. Muslims often ask the question of what should be done before going to bed, and whether duas should be read before going to bed, and, if so, what duas should be read before going to bed.

Dua before bed #2:
“Allahumma inni aslyamtu wajhi ilayka wa favvaḓtu amri ilayka wa aljatu ӟahri ilayka rahbatan wa rahbatan ilayka. La maljaa wa la manja minka illya ilyayka. Allahumma amantu bi kitabika llai anzalta wa bi nabiyika llai arsalta.”
Meaning: “O Allah, I surrendered to You, and entrusted My business to You (i.e., I left You to decide everything), and I relied on You out of desire for You and out of fear of You. There is no refuge and no salvation from You except (turning to) You! O Allah, I have believed in Your Scripture, which You have revealed, and in Your Prophet, whom You have sent.”
From Barra bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) it is reported that the Prophet ﷺ before going to bed, recommended performing the same ablution that is done before prayer, lying on your right side and reading this dua (Imams al-Bukhari and Muslim).
Muslim prayer for a child to sleep well
It is no less important for a child to get enough sleep than for an adult, but many theologians believe that the prayer of a minor (according to the canons of Islam) is not considered perfect. In such cases, to protect a child or toddler from everything bad - for example, fear, a prayer before bedtime, Islam requires reading it to parents - and they usually perform the same prayers and duas for children before bedtime that adults do for themselves. Thus, the Muslim bedtime prayer for children is identical to the prayer for adults, and children are also told what older Muslims should say before going to bed. Also, a pious Muslim should read a prayer over the child in the morning, thanking the Almighty for the baby’s peaceful sleep and the gift of awakening for the child.
But there is one dua aimed specifically at making the child fall asleep faster or stop being capricious before bed; you can use Islamic ruqya (a permissible spell in Islam that even helps to remove the evil eye). However, it is necessary to take into account some subtleties - ruqya performed without mentioning Allah, and also not containing surahs from the Koran, will not be heard, because it becomes a witchcraft spell. It is also necessary to read ruqya in Arabic, letter by letter - if at least one of the above conditions is violated, the Muslim will suffer a grave sin.
Dua before bed #3:
"Bismika rabbi vaḓa'tu janbi wa bika arfa'uhu in amsakta nafsi farẍamha vain arsaltaha faẍfaӟha bima taẍfaӟu bihi 'ibadaka-ĉ-ĉaliẍin."
Meaning: “With Your name, my Lord, I lie down on my side, and with Your name I will rise. If you take my soul, then have mercy on it, and if you let it go, then protect it through the means with which You protect Your righteous servants.”
It is reported from the words of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ recommended that before going to bed, shake it off and read this dua (Imams al-Bukhari and Muslim).
When and at what times is reading recommended?
Duas for the night are read in the period of time when the obligatory Isha prayer has already been read, followed by Witr prayer, but before the Muslim falls asleep. It is advisable to read the prayer at night every day, because the dua protects from the shaitan, thus keeping the soul and thoughts of a Muslim pure. It doesn’t matter when a Muslim is going to bed - in the evening or late at night, duas will protect him from the wiles of the shaitan.

In addition, the completed Muslim prayer before going to bed, as well as reading the surah at night, ensures the worshiper a restful sleep and the accomplishment of everything planned the next day - after all, if a Muslim remembers Allah in any of his deeds, then the Almighty will generously reward him for performing good deeds with the mention of his name , and going to bed is no exception. It is especially valuable to read night prayers on the night of Al Qadr - the Night of Predestination.
Dua before bed #4:
“Subanallah” (33 times), “Alẍamdulillah” (33 times), “Allahu Akbar” (34 times).
It is narrated from Ali bin Abu Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Prophet ﷺ, asking for a maid. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Shall I teach you what will be better for you than a servant?” And the Prophet ﷺ continued: “Before going to bed, read Subẍanallah (Allah is Great) 33 times, Alẍamdulillah (Praise be to Allah) 33 times, and Allahu akbar (Allah is Great) 34 times” (Imams al-Bukhari and Muslim).
Reading dhikr at night
It is mentioned in the hadith that one day, his daughter Fatima, whom he loved very much, and her husband Ali ibn Abu Talib came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who complained about the difficult life situation to the Prophet ﷺ, asking him to help them by giving them a slave maid who would helped Fatima around the house. To which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ answered them that he could not leave the disadvantaged Muslims of Medina without support and invited them to read dhikr, which would be better for them than anything they asked for. Since then, Ali ibn Abu Talib never abandoned this remembrance of Allah, always reading it before going to bed.
Dua before bed #5:
اللυPEONE THEN THEYA قYLYnkHى و shop bowكicles يلوUS تRYnk تOR LUC THEYLYCUCLYLE
"Allahumma ḱini 'aҙabaka yavma tab'aҫu 'ibadaka."
Meaning: “O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the day when You resurrect Your slaves.”
From Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) it is reported that when the Prophet ﷺ went to bed, he put his right hand under his cheek and read this dua (Abu Dawud).
How the Prophet Muhammad slept
The Prophet Muhammad showed asceticism in everything related to worldly life. He had never slept on a comfortable soft bed. In his house, as in most houses at that time, the floors were earthen, and a coarse mat or skin laid directly on the ground served as a night bed.
A well-known narration (a story about the life of the prophet and righteous companions) says that his close friend and assistant Umar ibn Khattab, seeing the marks of the mat on the body of Muhammad, began to cry and said: “Rulers and sultans sleep on soft beds, and you, the Messenger of Allah ", the best of people, you sleep on a rough mat." To which the prophet answered him: “O Umar, will we be at a loss if they (non-believers) have worldly things, and we (Muslims) have akhirat (eternal life).”
Muhammad always slept on his right side with his right palm under his cheek. The benefits of this situation are proven by modern medicine. Because vital organs (heart and liver) are on the right side, they are not compressed during sleep and continue to function normally throughout the night, ensuring full recovery during sleep.
Before going to bed, Muhammad performed ablution, read dua and some suras of the Koran. He often rose long before dawn and spent a third of the night in worship.
The prophet condemned sleeping after morning prayers and called on Muslims to stay awake at dawn, because... this is the time of distribution of barakah (good).
Dua before bed #7:
“Allahumma halaḱta nafsi wa anta tawaffaha laka mamatuha wa maẍyaha in aẍyaytaha faẍfaӟha wa in amattaha faqfir laha. Allahumma inni asaaluk-l-'afiyah."
Meaning: “O Allah, You created my soul, You will give it rest, and its death and life belong to You. If You bring her back to life, then protect her, and if You kill her, then forgive her. O Allah, verily, I ask You for forgiveness."
It is reported that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered one person to read this dua after he went to bed. He was asked: “Did you hear this from Umar?” To which Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: “I heard these words from one who is better than Umar, I heard these words from the Prophet ﷺ” (Imam Muslim).
Rules for going to bed
It is important not just to read the dua at night before going to bed, but to follow certain rules. When you go to bed and are about to read dua, first fold your hands so that your palms are facing each other. Then you should blow on the hands folded in this way, and only after that you can begin to read the dua.
Reading the last three suras
Before going to bed, you should also read Surah Ikhlas (Sincerity), Surah Falyak (Dawn) and Surah Nas (People).
Surah “Ikhlas”, read by Yasir ad-Dawsari;
Surah “Falyak”, read by Yasir ad-Dausari;
Surah an-Nas, read by Yasir ad-Dawsari.
After these three surahs have been recited, the Muslim should move these palms over his entire body, starting from his head, moving to his face, and then to the front of his body. This procedure should be done three times at night after reading three surahs. This is what the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did every night before going to bed: he folded his palms towards each other in front of him, blew on them, and then read the last suras of the Koran - “Al-Ikhlas”, “Al-Falak” and “An-Nas”. Having finished reading these surahs, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ rubbed his entire body with his palms, starting from his head, then along his face and the front of his head, and all the way to his feet. One of the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ says that the believer who does this, reading dua at night before going to bed, will be protected during sleep from evil and claims, and the insidious plans of the shaitan for the whole night until the morning. This is stated in an authentic hadith, which was reported by Sahih Bukhari.
Reading the verse “The Throne”
After all of the above has been done, you should read the verse “Al-Kursi” from Surah “Al-Bakara”. A Muslim who reads the verse “Al-Kursi” before going to bed at night will be protected from any evil, and the Shaitan will not dare to approach him until the Muslim wakes up in the morning - this verse protects a Muslim in a dream from any evil emanating from Shaitan.
- verse “Al-Kursi”, read by Saad al-Ghamidi.
Reading dua
Before going to bed, we read the dua or any other dua given in this article: “Allahumma kinni azabaka yauma tabasu ibadak,” in which a Muslim turns to the Almighty with a request for protection from His punishment on the Day of Judgment, when Allah will resurrect all his slaves.
Reading the last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah
The last verses (verses 285 and 286) from Surah “The Cow” (Al-Baqarah) say that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions, the believers, believed in the Almighty and what the Creator sent to the believers: His angels, His messengers and the Scriptures His. The surah further states that believers should not make any distinction between the messengers. And the believers obeyed Him. The verses there say that God does not impose on the human soul anything that is not within its power. All the good that a person has done will bring his soul rewards from the Almighty, and all the evil that a believer does will affect his soul on the Day of Judgment and will entail punishment.
Further in these verses follows the prayer of believers to the Almighty that He would not exact punishment from Muslims if they made a mistake by forgetting about punishment. The following is a prayer that the Almighty does not impose on Muslims such a burden as He placed on the peoples who lived before them, and also does not impose such a burden that man cannot bear.
In an authentic hadith of the Prophet ﷺ, it is reported that reading these two verses at night is enough to protect oneself from evil, and the reason for this lies in their glorious meaning.
Dua before bed #8:
All rights reserved.
“Allahumma inni a'uҙu biwajhika-l-karimi wa kalimatika-t-tammati min sharri ma anta ahihun binaĉyyatihi. Allahumma anta takshifu-l-maґrama wa-l-maҫama. Allahumma la yuhzamu dzhunduka wa la yuhlafu wa'duka wa la yanfa'u kha-l-jaddi minka-l-jaddu. Subẍanaka wa biẍamdika."
Meaning: “O Allah, I resort to You with Your mercy, with perfect words from the evil of everything that is subject to You. O Allah, You relieve us from debts and sins. O Allah, Your army is invincible, Your promise is not broken, and the power of the powerful will be useless before You, Glory be to You and Praise be to You” (Abu Dawud).
Ablution
Taharat (ablution) before going to bed is a sunnah (desirable action) for which a Muslim receives a reward from the Almighty. At the head of the Muslim who falls asleep in a state of ritual purity, there is an angel. And after awakening, the angel asks the Almighty for forgiveness of all his sins. This is what it says in the book of Sahih Ibn Hibban.
Remembering Allah and praying before going to bed is also better in a state of ablution. Muhammad once said to his companions:
“I don’t like to do dhikr (remembrance) of Allah while in a state of ablution.”
This is a hadith quoted from Abu Dawud 1/44, Ibn Majah.
The following hadiths also testify to the advantage of performing cleansing before going to bed:
- Once the prophet told one of the companions Al-Bar ibn Azib that when he wants to go to bed, he must perform ablution, as before prayer, then lie down on his right side and read the words of the prayer. And if he is destined to die in his sleep, then he will die in fitrah (in a state of faith). Therefore, reading the dua should be the last words spoken by a person on this day. Given in the collection of al-Bukhari 247;
- Ibn Abbas reported a hadith that states:
“Cleanse your bodies and Allah will cleanse you (from sins). Truly, if a Muslim goes to bed purified, an angel spends the whole night next to him, who every hour asks Allah for forgiveness for His servant.” Reported by At-Tabarani in al-Awsat 5083.
Thus, the importance of ablution before going to bed separately was repeatedly mentioned by the Prophet Muhammad.
Prayer for insomnia
If you can’t sleep for a long time, then read the following dua:
All rights reserved.
Meaning:
“O Allah, the stars disappeared, the eyes calmed down. You are the Eternally Existing One. O Eternally Existing One, sleep my eyes and make my night peaceful.”
It would be better to repeat the prayer several times. This will help you calm down and fall asleep faster.
Read the Tatar prayer for good luck
The desire to attract luck into life is natural for every person. In the Muslim world, luck and material well-being are interconnected. This is precisely why it is necessary to give alms to the poor before reading this type of prayer. Dua to attract good luck and money can be read only once a day. You can offer prayer at any time.
A powerful prayer sounds like this:
“In the name of the Merciful and Almighty Allah. I conjure you with prayerful words, oh great happiness! Become the master of my home. Become a strong patron over my head, humbly bowed. Become a protection for me and my family from sorrows and poverty. Become a bright Sun for me and sprinkle my life with blessed rain of abundance. Fill my home with prosperity and prosperity. I call on you, come, I am waiting for you obediently and humbly.”
