Duas to be recited during Ramadan

There is nothing left until the onset of Ramadan. This holy month of fasting brings with it countless benefits from the Almighty, and every believer awaits its onset with trepidation, turning to Allah in dua to grant him the opportunity to meet Ramadan and spend it with dignity. We invite you to familiarize yourself with the dua read before the start of Ramadan according to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.

Our master ʼUbadah ibn Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) to recite the following dua before the onset of the blessed month of Ramadan: ٰانَ وَسَلِّمْ رَمَضٰانَ لِي
وَسَلِّمْهُ لِي مُتَقَبَّلاٰ

“Alla humma sallimni li Ramaḓana wa sallim Ramaḓana wa sallim li mutaḱabbala.”

Meaning: “O Allah! Save me for Ramadan, save Ramadan for me and accept it from me.”

(“Kitabu du’a” by Imam at-Tabarani, hadith No. 912; also see “Hayatu Sohaba” (vol. 3, p. 182) and “Kanzul-ummal” (vol. 8, p. 584))

Explanation

“Save me for Ramadan” means: “O Allah! May I remain healthy and fit so that I can benefit from Ramadan.” This also means that “when Ramadan comes, I ask that I not be caught by bad conditions that may interfere with fasting, worship, etc.”

“Save Ramadan for me” means: “In addition to this, O Allah, give me the ability (tawfiq) to gain maximum benefit from this auspicious occasion.” Many people are able to receive the reward of this month, but they fail to benefit from it. I really feel sorry for these people. May Allah protect us!

“And accept it from me” means: “O Allah! And after you have promised me a reward for serving this month, do not let it all go in vain by not accepting my deeds.”

Prayers for every day of the month of Ramadan

It is recommended to read these prayers each on its own day, for example, in the morning, immediately after sunrise. They are short, but the reward for them is great. Don't leave them behind and don't miss your opportunity. Since they are short, you can easily save them to your phone or print them on 1 sheet of ِA4 and always have them with you.

It will also be useful to print them out and distribute them in the mosque, and may Allah reward you with the best reward.

Custom of the Salaf

1. Imam Tabarani (may Allah have mercy on him) reports that the famous Tabiyin Makhul (may Allah have mercy on him) read this dua at the beginning of Ramadan (“Kitabu dua li Tabarani”, Hadith No. 913).

2. He also reports from ʼAbdul-ʼAziz ibn Abi Rawwad (d. 159 AH) that “Muslims read” a similar duʼa (with additions to the above wording) at the onset of Ramadan (ibid., Hadith No. 914) .

3. Imam Muhammad ibn Nasar al-Marwazi wrote in “Qiyamul-layl” that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and the Tabi’een (may Allah have mercy on them) usually read this duʼa when Ramadan began (Mukhtasar Qiyamul-layl , p. 98).

4. Hafiz Ibn Rajab (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from a trustworthy Tabiyin: “Yahya ibn Abi Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “It was their (companions and Tabieen) custom to recite this duʼa...” (Lataiful -Ma'arif, p. 280)

Perhaps it was in the light of these confirmatory transmissions that Imam Suyuta (may Allah have mercy on him) considered this hadith to be a hasan hadith, that is, exactly reliable (Kanzul-ʼummal, vol. 8, p. 584).

Dua for Suhoor and Iftar

With the onset of the holy month of Ramadan, the daily routine of a believer changes in many ways. Starting on the evening before Ramadan, every night Muslims perform Tarawih prayer and observe obligatory fasting during the day.

In this regard, eating during the daytime, that is, from dawn to sunset, is excluded from the daily schedule. Therefore, their meals are limited to suhoor and iftar.

One of the blessings of the month of Ramadan is the pre-dawn meal of Muslims before the start of the day's fast - Suhur. Suhur is not a condition for the validity of fasting, but it is the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), which should not be taken carelessly.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a hadith narrated from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

تَسَحَّرُوا فَإِنَّ فِي السَّحُورِ بَرَكَةً

Perform suhoor (that is, eat before dawn), verily, in suhoor there is grace .” ( Bukhari , 1923; Muslim , 1095)

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ commands us to eat before dawn on the day of fasting and informs us of the grace that lies in this act. Therefore, if we follow this instruction of the Prophet ﷺ we will receive a separate reward for this.

Also from Abu Said Al-Khudri and Anas (may Allah be pleased with them), it is reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

All rights reserved. أَحَدُكُمْ جَرْعَةً مِنْ مَاءٍ

Taking food during Suhoor is a blessing, so don’t leave it, even if it’s just a sip of water .” ( Imam Ahmad , Abu Yala , Ibn Hibban )

As you can see, you should not skip Suhoor, citing the lack of need to eat. It is advisable to stand for suhoor even if a person is full and does not intend to eat. In this case, you can limit yourself to a sip of water or a few dates.

As you know, the time of Suhoor is a blessed time, so it would be advisable to read a good dua at this time. There are no special duas for suhur, which are transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ his companions, righteous predecessors (may Allah be pleased with them).

As with any meal, before the start of Suhoor, it is advisable to say “ Bismillah ”, and at the end to give praise and read dua. In addition to this, it will be better to add other duas and remember Allah at this time, because at this time the mercy of Allah descends on Earth and prayers are accepted.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

السَّماءِ الدُّنْيا حِينَ يَب ْقَى ثُلُثُ اللَّيْل الآخِر فَيَقُولُ مَنْ يَدْعُونِي فأسْتَجِيبَ َهُ؟ مَنْ يَسْألُني فأُعْطِيَهُ مَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُني فَأَغْفِر لَهُ

With the onset of the last third of each night, the mercy of Allah Almighty, His command and His angels descend to the lower heaven, and the Almighty says: “Who will turn to Me with prayers so that I answer him? Who will ask Me for something so that I will give it to him? Who will ask Me for forgiveness so that I will forgive him?” "( Bukhari , 7494; Muslim , 758)

The version of this hadith reported only by Muslim adds:

فَلا يَزَالُ كَذَلِكَ حتَّى يُضِيءَ الفَجْرُ

«... and this continues until dawn breaks».

At this blessed time, every believer who stands for Suhur has the opportunity to turn to the Almighty with his prayer. Therefore, you should not miss this chance. You can read the dua even after the completion of suhoor before dawn, because this blessing lasts until dawn.

No less blessed is the time of Iftar - the time when believers end their fast. During Iftar, dua is also accepted, for this time is the moment of completion of the most worthy worship in the month of Ramadan.

The state of a person who has been fasting all day at the end of the day is very weak and his nafs is also weakened and prone to prayers. In such a state, a person, as is known, is closer to humility and obedience.

Many hadiths are transmitted, which report what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said and what duas he read at that time.

'Abdullah bin 'Amr ibn Al-'As (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say:

إنَّ للصَّائِمِ عِنْدَ فِطْرِهِ لَدَعْوَةً ما تُرَدُّ

Truly, there is a prayer that is not rejected when the fasting person addresses it to Allah during the breaking of the fast .” ( Ibn Majah , Ibn al-Sunni )

It was reported from Mua'za bin Zuhra that it came to him that, after breaking his fast, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

All rights reserved.

«Allahumma, la-kya sumtu wa 'ala rizki-kya aftartu».

“O Allah, for Your sake I fasted and broke my fast with the food You provided.” ( Abu Daoud )

It is also narrated from Abdullah ibn Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that, after breaking his fast, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

ذَهَبَ الظَّمأُ، وابْتَلَّتِ العُرُوقُ، وَثَبَتَ الأجْرُ إِنْ شاء َ اللَّهُ تَعالى

«Zahaba-z-zamau, wa-tallati-l-'uruku, wa sabata-l-ajru in sha'a-Llah».

Thirst has gone, the veins have filled with moisture, and the reward is already waiting, if Allah Almighty pleases .” ( Abu Dawud , An-Nasai )

Based on the above, we need to try not to miss these moments and read as many duas as possible at this time. Perhaps, by the will of the Almighty, the prayer at this moment will become exactly that dua that is not rejected by the Lord.

Muslim Abdulaev

When to read this duʼa?

In all of the above programs, except the last one, it is indicated that this duʼa is read when Ramadan comes or begins. In the version of Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, may Allah have mercy on him, the following wording is used:

The

"Alla humma sallimni ila Ramana."

Meaning: “O Allah, protect me until Ramadan.”

This confirms that the prayer (in this wording) was read before the onset of the month itself.

And Allah Almighty knows best.

Dua before meals

Before the meal, the believer should think about the fact that all blessings belong to Allah, and for this in his prayer the believer thanks the Creator, and also for the fact that he gave water and food to the believers, honored them with all the blessings, gave them food and a roof over their heads. This prayer glorifies the Lord Almighty, who makes his believers Muslims and bestows them with virtue.

A believer should begin any meal with “ Bismillah!” ", which translated means "In the name of Allah." If a Muslim believer forgot to say this dua before eating, then at the end of the meal he should say “ Bismillahi fi avali-hi wa ahyri-hi! ”, which translated means “With the name of Allah at the beginning and the end!” (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi).

After meal

They also say a prayer before meals, in which they turn to the Almighty with a request to make the food blessed for the one who eats it, as well as to feed him food that is better than this food. (Tirmidhi).

Why say dua during suhoor or iftar?

According to the covenant of the Prophet Muhammad, dua for Suhur and Iftar offered by a fasting person are accepted without delay.
Praying for the community, family, and friends is a reliable way to gain Allah’s blessing. During fasting, believers sincerely repent of their sins and cleanse their souls. And their duas acquire special power and are able to change and soften predestination (qadar) filled with difficulties. According to Islamic beliefs, the faithful will receive a reward for worshiping God in the form of prayer.

Holy fasting (Uraza) is obligatory for a Muslim. It is a pillar of Islam, an act of faith, a form of worship of Allah, a way to test the strength of a person's spirit. Departure from fasting without a good reason is a grave sin. During Ramadan, believers do not take food or water into their mouths while the Sun is shining; the subsequent breaking of the fast and food before a new day turns into part of the ritual, an act of faith, and acquires a sacred meaning. Before eating, you should read a prayer. When a Muslim makes dua for Suhur and Iftar, he communicates with Allah.

Rules for making dua

Allah Almighty loves it when Muslims turn to him with requests and prayers as often as possible. When making a prayer, a Muslim must observe a certain order and adhere to a number of rules.

  1. When making a prayer, a Muslim must turn his heart to the Creator and read dua with the intention for the sake of the Almighty. The prayer begins with the Muslim praising the Almighty (“Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘alamin”), reading salawat to the Prophet Muhammad (“sallallahu alayhi wa sallam”) and repenting of his sins - “Astaghfirullah.”
  2. If a Muslim is going to express an important request in his prayer to the Almighty, then first he should perform ablution.
  3. You should turn towards Qibla.
  4. While making dua, the believer should hold his hands with his palms facing up in front of his face. As the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “Truly, your Lord, the Living, the Generous, cannot refuse His servant if he raises his hands in supplication.” In a hadith narrated by Anas, it is said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while making dua, raised his hands so high that the whiteness of his armpits was visible.
  5. It is necessary to pronounce your request with respect, the tone must be quiet so that others cannot hear it, and you cannot turn your gaze to heaven.
  6. When the reading of the dua is completed, one should again say words praising Allah Almighty, and then say salawat to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Good Time and Action to Accept a Prayer

There are certain times or certain actions at which the Almighty first of all accepts dua from a believer:

  • performed after prayer in the month of Ramadan;
  • committed on the Night of Laylat-ul-Qadr.

Also, the last third of the night, as well as Friday, refers to the time when the Almighty hears and accepts dua after prayer. If the dua is pronounced between azan and iqamat, as well as at the time when the imam began to perform juma prayer and before the end of this prayer, then Allah Almighty will certainly accept it.

There are also certain actions when Allah Almighty accepts prayers from Muslims: after reading the Holy Quran, while a Muslim drinks zamzam water, in the rain, as well as during sajd (prostration) and after pronouncing dhikr (remembering Allah) .

There are also places in which dua should be made by a Muslim who wants the Almighty to hear and accept his prayer: these are the places in the world where Hajj is performed - Mount Arafat, the Mina and Muzdalif valleys, as well as the area around the Kaaba.
