What is an akathist

Akathist is a hymn, a chant that is read while standing. The very first akathist in Christianity is dedicated to the Mother of God. According to the Charter, it is included in church services.

All other akathists (translations or original Slavic expositions) appeared everywhere throughout the history of Christianity in Rus'. Later, entire collections of such texts began to be published. They are hymns of praise to the saints, the Savior, and the Mother of God. The authors are clergy, spiritual writers or teachers of theological schools and seminaries.

In order for the akathist to be included in the service, it is sent for consideration to the Committee of Spiritual Censorship. The Committee's decision is forwarded to the Holy Synod. After which a hymn that meets the requirements may be included in the worship service and thus will be printed in the official spiritual collection.

Structure of the akathist about the one who died

The structure of the hymn consists of 25 songs - 13 kontakia and 12 ikos. They alternate. The unpaired, 13th kontakion is worn three times. After it, the first ikos is read and again the first kontakion.

The word “akathist” translated from Greek means “unsaddled song.” That is, you cannot sit during the anthem.

The first kontakion and all ikos end with the call “Rejoice.” The remaining 12 kontakia end with the word “hallelujah.” The anthem is most often read at home. Therefore, it is quite possible to pronounce it without the special blessing of the priest.

Why read the akathist?

The deceased can no longer pray for themselves. Therefore, loved ones and relatives must pray for forgiveness of the sins of those who have passed into another world. Only on the 40th day do the ordeals of the soul end. All this time, loved ones must constantly ask the Almighty for mercy on the deceased. Relatives often ask clergy: “Where can I find an akathist for the same deceased? When should I read it?

There are no established canons for reading prayers for the dead. It is not known for certain whether a soul will go to heaven if relatives tirelessly ask for forgiveness of the sins of the deceased. Prayers cannot buy God's grace. But you can remember the deceased or deceased with good deeds, words, and alms.

Prayerful assistance for suicides and unbaptized people is allowed only in personal prayer. The text of the akathist, as already mentioned, can be found in church literature. The third day after a person’s death is called thirds. On this day, the soul of the deceased goes to heaven. Therefore, it is very important to offer prayers over the body all three days and after the funeral, so that the soul does not suffer, but receives temporary peace.

Immediately after death, a special ritual of washing and dressing the deceased is performed. After it, loved ones can read a prayer-appeal to the Guardian Angel over the body of the deceased.



It sounds like this:

“Holy Guardian Angel, you were assigned to the deceased servant of God (name of the deceased)! So I ask you not to abandon his soul during this period, protect it from evil, terrible demons; be her protector in the invisible world of spirits, take the soul of the deceased under your wing and guide her through the gates of the air; stand as an intercessor for her with God and pray to the Almighty to have mercy and forgive all the earthly sins of the servant of God (name of the deceased). Prayer for repose immediately after the funeral is very important, since it is at this moment that the support of living loved ones is very important for the soul. In no case should one treat dead people carelessly, since in this case the Lord will appreciate such an attitude and will not show leniency towards the soul of the deceased at the Last Judgment.

It is believed that after the funeral it is best to read a special prayer in the temple. This is the most powerful prayer. With its help, you can beg for forgiveness of many of the deceased person’s sins that he committed during his lifetime.

The text of the prayer after the funeral is:

The prayer, which is read on the 9th day after death, sounds like this:

A very strong prayer for the newly deceased is an appeal to the Most Holy Theotokos. During her lifetime, the Most Pure Virgin Mary experienced a lot of grief associated with the loss of loved ones. Therefore, her prayers always calm, but most importantly, such appeals are necessarily taken into account by the Lord when carrying out the Judgment.

Prayer for the repose of the soul of the newly deceased

Preserve the soul of the deceased in ordeals, do not allow evil spirits to harm the soul in search of a bright path, become protection from the prince of darkness, a terrible tormentor of souls. I pray to you, our Intercessor, to become a supporter of the soul of the deceased servant of God (name of the deceased) at the Last Judgment of the Lord.

Beg your Son to forgive him all his sins and not allow him to suffer terrible torment in fiery hell. Amen".

After 40 days, you need to pray for the repose of the deceased, turning to the Most Holy Theotokos, on special days, and also when an internal need arises for this. You don't have to visit for this. You can offer a prayer to the Most Pure Virgin Mary at home in front of her image.

According to the canons of the Orthodox faith, dead people, if prayers are offered for them for the repose of their souls, receive relief, and sometimes even liberation from God’s punishments from beyond the grave for sins committed during earthly life. It should be understood that there is no specific set number of prayers that guarantee souls entering heaven. The living cannot know anything about God's Judgment.

During prayer requests, an understanding comes that Christianity does not connect life with the end of everything. It is a transitional stage that God destined for any person to go through.

How to read an akathist

Akathist is a self-sufficient prayer. It can be read in church at a prayer service or at home. In some cases, it is combined with the canon of the saint or combined with a funeral litia. The essence of the akathist is a joyful, laudatory song. In Orthodoxy there is no death as such. And there is the repose of the soul into eternal life. The Savior's victory over death, the immortality of the soul and its union with the Lord is joy for a Christian. Therefore, the akathist for the one who died should be read with this attitude.

There is another opinion on this matter. Thus, some clergy claim that the akathist for the one-dead (one-dead) is of dubious origin. This statement is based on some facts.

  1. The inner meaning of the anthem is contradictory. This is the praise of the Lord, the Mother of God or the saints, and not intercession for the dead.
  2. The Akathist does not have the permission of His Holiness the Patriarch or the liturgical commission.
  3. Replacing the reading of the Psalter with an akathist will not bring peace of mind either to the living or to the deceased.

Therefore, the solution to the laity’s question about how to correctly read the akathist for the one who died should begin by agreeing on it with their priest. Only with his approval is it permissible to read this hymn.
