Strong prayers to John the Warrior have been known to people since ancient times, despite the ambiguous legends regarding his life and deeds. Some believe that John was against Christianity and Christians, although if you look at his life chronicle, it is clear from them that all his actions were aimed at helping Orthodox believers.
He served as a warrior for Julian the Apostate and, together with others, persecuted and killed Christians. But this was only a shell that those around him saw; in fact, he provided invaluable assistance to believers who were being persecuted:
- freed those captured;
- assisted in the escape;
- warned people in advance about impending persecution;
- the brave warrior visited the sick and helped the mourning.
When Emperor Julian learned about the deeds of Saint John, he ordered him to be imprisoned, and soon when Julian was killed in the Persian War, John was released and devoted his future life to preaching faith in the Lord God.
The martyr died in old age. In the Orthodox Church, July 30 is considered the day of veneration of the Great Martyr (according to the old style - August 12), on this day, as a rule, services are held in Orthodox churches.
Prayer to the martyr John the Warrior
The Holy Martyr is approached with pleas for help and intercession in a wide variety of situations:
- to return stolen items;
- to find thieves;
- it helps to find a lost thing;
- to protect yourself from all sorts of offenders;
- to restore justice, etc.

Many people think that a thief can forget about returning what was stolen. And some turn to the Holy Great Martyr in prayer and receive the stolen item or money back. After all, he always helped and still helps the offended.
You should only think about the return of what you lost in a positive way. Before prayer, you should not curse or get angry at the offender; it is important to be merciful and kind-hearted even to the person who offended you.
Before any appeal to the Holy Father, for example, before asking for a refund, it is important to read the prayer words “Our Father”. They do this in order to first turn to the Almighty, ask for forgiveness for their intentional or accidental sins, and only then can they read a personal petition to John the Warrior.
At the same time, a prayer request is best received in an Orthodox church, in front of holy images.
How to pray to a saint correctly
The prayer appeal to St. John should take place in silence, nothing should distract the believer’s thoughts. Before starting the prayer, you must light a blessed candle in front of the icon, read the “Our Father,” make the sign of the cross and bow.
The texts of the prayers can be read from the Orthodox prayer book or learned by heart. To better understand the content, you need to have a dictionary of Church Slavonic words. Without a complete understanding of the text, prayer to John the Warrior will not be sincere, coming from the heart.
Prayer to John the Warrior from the offender
“Oh, great martyr of Christ John, champion of the faithful, chaser of enemies and intercessor of the offended. Hear us, in troubles and sorrows, praying to you, as if grace from God has been given to you quickly to console the sad, to help the weak, to deliver the innocent from vain death, and to pray for all those who suffer evil.
Be therefore a strong champion for us against all our visible and invisible enemies, for with your help and fight all those who show us evil will be put to shame. Pray to our Lord, that He may grant us His sinful and unworthy servants to receive from Him the ineffable good that is prepared for those who love Him, in the Trinity of the Holy Ones, glorified by God, always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen".
With the same exact text of the petition, a prayer to St. John the Warrior is read to search for the stolen property. It is necessary to think about the stolen item, imagine its return, read the “Our Father” and turn to the Holy Warrior; according to legend, after a short period of time the stolen item will return to its rightful owner.

The meaning of a saint in Orthodoxy
Saint John was from Constantinople. The exact dates of birth and death are unknown. Traditions have been preserved about a short period of his life under the Roman emperor Flavius Claudius Julian, his death and subsequently the discovery of his relics.
Julian inherited imperial power in 361 after the death of the direct heirs of his uncle Constantine the Great. His predecessors fought against paganism and contributed to the spread of Christian doctrine. Julian, in contrast to them, was a pagan at heart and with his first edict he restored the ancient Roman religion, for which he received the title Apostate.
The fight against Christians began throughout the empire. One of the methods was the physical destruction of Christians, the destruction of churches, and the intimidation of those who waver so that they would renounce Christianity. To carry out his plan, Julian the Apostate used the army.
The soldiers loved Julian, who for a long time was their commander in the war with the Gauls and Germans. During this period, John was appointed commander of one of the units for his courage and bravery. With his detachment, he was sent to the east to carry out punitive operations. Being a Christian, Saint John found the opportunity to notify villages about the approach of soldiers. He gave freedom to captured Christians under any pretext.
The soldiers reported to the emperor against their commander that he was acting contrary to his orders. The emperor ordered John to be taken to Constantinople and imprisoned until his execution. On the way to the capital of the empire, the soldiers cruelly mocked the former commander: they beat him and did not give him food or water.
In prison, John was put in iron shackles. Every day he expected the verdict and execution. His spirit was supported by prayers to the Lord. Julian the Apostate was busy with the war with the Persians and postponed consideration of the case of betrayal until he returned from the campaign.
On June 26, 363, Emperor Julian the Apostate was killed during the battle. His heir was Jovian, an admirer of Christianity. Saint John was released from captivity. Until the end of his life, he provided assistance to people in difficult situations.
He died at a very old age. He was buried in a cemetery for the homeless. The burial place was forgotten over time. One day he appeared in a dream to a Christian woman and indicated where his remains were located. The woman told the clergy about her dream. The relics were removed from the ground and placed in the golden shrine of the Constantinople Temple. The legend about the saint says that his icon protected a poor widow from thieves, thanks to whom the relics were found.
Icons of John the Warrior are found only in the Russian Orthodox Church. The saint is traditionally depicted in military garb, with a cross, spear and shield.
In his honor, 8 churches have been opened and operate in Russia:
- In Moscow;
- Novokuznetsk;
- Stavropol;
- Rostov-on-Don;
- Syzran;
- Bryansk;
- Boguchar;
- Krasnodar.
The Orthodox Church reveres the saint for his strength of spirit, unshakable faith, and responsiveness to prayer requests.

The great faith of correction, / in a source of flame, like on the water of repose, /
the holy martyr Theodore rejoiced: / for he was burnt with fire, /
like sweet bread was brought to the Trinity. / Through the prayers of Christ God / save our souls.
The faith of Christ is like a shield into your heart, /
You have trampled upon the opposing forces, the long-suffering one: /
and you were forever crowned with the heavenly crown of Theodore, / as invincible.
Holy Great Martyr Theodore, pray to God for us!
Strangely terrified by your vision, / the bishop contradicted the speech: / Who are you, Lord, say to me? / Enlighten and teach how we will find speedy help?
Theodore speaks: I am clearly a passion-bearer, and hear: / having boiled the wheat, divide it among the people, / and thus they will be saved from the unclean brass of the deceiver.
Glory: How great is your miracle, / and your glorious intercession, Theodore! / Meanwhile, boldly and purely, we all resort to you, / and we pray, save your servants.
And now, the Mother of God: Thou art the dwelling place of light, and the pure companion of the Word, / the Father’s favor, and the visitation of the Holy Spirit to thee, / even so enlighten me.
They pray to the saint not only in illness, but also for any everyday difficulties, for harmony in the family, for finding a job, and even for the discovery of missing items.
