At the end of the 19th century, in the village of Sebino (Tula region), a girl was born, shielded from the outside world by blindness from birth. Matronushka, as the girl was called, felt her strength at the age of 8, and from that time on she provided assistance to everyone who turned to her for help.
Her spiritual support was faith in God, which she accepted from infancy. Rejected by her peers because of her blindness, Matrona found solace in communicating with holy images: without seeing, she talked to them, prayed in her childish language.
At the age of 17, a new test awaited her: her legs gave out. Deprived of the ability to move, the blind girl did not lose heart. An unquenchable fire of love for the Lord and merciful compassion for people burned in her soul. It was not Matrona who was pitied as a cripple, but the saint who “extended her hand” to help the suffering, the flow of which did not dry up during her life and continues after death.
Matrona of Moscow died in 1952. Currently, her sacred relics rest in the temple of the Intercession Convent. The canonization of Matrona of Moscow took place in 1999 as a locally revered saint. Church-wide recognition took place in 2004.
The Orthodox Church remembers the saint three times:
- on her birthday - November 22;
- death – May 2;
- discovery of the relics - March 8.
