The sinfulness of adultery

Sexual intercourse has never been prohibited by the Church as long as it occurs in a legal union. The Gospel, on the contrary, calls for regular intimacy, so that abstinence does not lead to unnecessary temptations. Since marriage unites spouses spiritually, sex is a vibrant experience for them that strengthens the family. However, outside the marital bed, intimate relationships become a sin. The pleasure received by a traitor is considered a manifestation of weakness of spirit.

Outside the marital bed, intimate relationships become a sin

Causes

The factors that push a person to adultery were described by Abba Isaiah. In his work “Fatherland,” published in the second half of the 4th century, the religious writer named the following reasons:

  • empty talk beyond measure;
  • ambition;
  • habit of sleeping for a long time;
  • predilection for beautiful objects or clothing.

One passion gives rise to another, and in order not to be tempted again, you should give up sources of pleasure. Author's advice

Consequences and punishment

A person who has sinned suffers spiritually and physically. The sin of adultery has dire consequences:

  • the family is destroyed;
  • a person becomes a prisoner of his base desires and becomes like an animal;
  • he loses his status, falls in the eyes of his neighbors;
  • until death, the sinner is doomed to beg forgiveness for his immoral actions;
  • peace of mind is lost;
  • Often the Lord deprives a traitor of his mind;
  • the libertine is doomed to loneliness;
  • diseases appear that lead to early death;
  • love, trust, and mutual understanding leave the marital relationship;
  • thoughts become unclean, lustful;
  • an adulterer is equated to a thief, since he steals family happiness.

According to Orthodox canons, immoral intimate relationships are punishable by excommunication from the Church for a period of 15 years. Until the traitor repents, he is forbidden to undergo the Sacrament of the Eucharist. The adulterer is abandoned by God's grace, which makes him suffer morally and physically. The sinner becomes the real punishment for himself, since the family breaks up, the soul and body suffer, and the conscience is constantly tormented.

Prodigal thoughts and how to deal with them?

Prodigal thoughts torment modern humanity probably as much as never before.

Men and girls of all ages suffer from this problem. As a rule, prodigal thoughts usually come either before sleep or during inactivity (usually idleness). Everyone knows how to deal with idleness, but how to build a defense system for the time before going to bed is often not obvious. It is this question that will be addressed in this article.

The reasons why prodigal thoughts constantly visit our heads:

  1. Lack of quality sleep
  2. Lack of determination in renouncing lustful thoughts and regularly fighting passions
  3. Presence of images, pictures, films in memory

In order to regulate the quality of sleep you need to:

  1. At least 1 hour before bedtime, turn off the screens of any electronic devices (phone, tablet, laptop, PC, TV) - anything that emits light from the monitor screen.
  2. Do not eat at least 2 hours before bedtime.
  3. The last meal should consist of light food that is digested in 1-2 hours (salads, if protein foods - then fish, seafood, chicken, turkey). Eating meat for dinner is prohibited (the average digestion time for beef is 5 hours, for pork - 8 hours) - not only will you not be able to sleep for a long time while the food is being digested, it will still not be fully digested - by the morning you will get heaviness and blockage of the intestinal walls protein mucus, because In addition to the problem of sleep, a problem with the gastrointestinal tract will be added.
  4. Do not drink a lot of liquid before bed, otherwise you will not avoid night trips to the toilet and a long time to fall asleep again.
  5. Ventilate the room before going to bed (10-15 minutes is enough) to enrich the room with oxygen. Monitor the room temperature (20-24 degrees is optimal) - falling asleep in the cold and stuffiness is more difficult.
  6. You need to sleep in complete darkness. Curtain all the windows; if this is not possible, buy a sleep mask, it is inexpensive.
  7. Sleep should not be disturbed by extraneous noise, otherwise you will wake up regularly, and with weak noise, even if you do not wake up, your brain will process this information and will not rest properly. Buy earplugs at any pharmacy; this will allow you to quickly and easily solve the noise problem.
  8. Install the f.lux program on your computer. Select your city in the settings. The program will automatically change the warmth of the screen as the lighting outside the window changes. Those. in the evening the color spectrum will be closer to orange-red hues (similar to the color scheme when ordering), in the morning and afternoon - blue. Due to this, the retina of the eye will be able to read the range of color radiation from the monitor screen and give a command to the brain to produce the hormone melatonin, which is responsible for smoothly transferring the body to the sleep stage.
  9. For Android phones there is a similar program called Twilight

In the fight against lustful thoughts, the holy fathers recommend the Jesus Prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner

In addition to the effective help (if you have faith) from this prayer in the spiritual sphere, there is also a significant advantage in the material sphere. The fact is that the human brain can only focus on one thing. If you train your brain with the Jesus Prayer with attention, focusing on the prayer itself, then neither prodigal nor any other thoughts, according to our natural structure, will be able to penetrate the mind.

Why is prayer against fornication so important?

To understand when and how a prayer against fornication is read, it is necessary to understand the essence of this sinful passion. The term “fornication” in Orthodoxy has several meanings. In a narrow sense, this is a carnal relationship between people who are not in a legal marriage. Fornication can also mean any other debauchery. Starting from lust and obscene thoughts up to adultery and sodomy.

Orthodox prayer

Finally, the original meaning of the Old Church Slavonic word “fornication” is clarified by literal translation into modern Russian. This is spiritual “wandering,” that is, deviation from the Truth, falling into heresy or atheism. Corporal depravity is only a consequence of a person’s spiritual disorientation. Priest Igor Silchenkov notes:

“Wandering is a loss of the road, a waste of time and energy... The more we satisfy passion and indulge sin, the more they enslave us. And as a result, people find only suffering and disappointment. They wander outside their path, in sinful darkness.”

What is handjob

In essence, masturbation is a waste of human energy, for which a Christian believer is able to find a more reasonable use, but besides this, this type of satisfaction can tell about the weakness of the Orthodox, in particular the inability to properly manage his lusts.

It should be noted that masturbation is a terrible sin and no matter what it is called in Orthodoxy, such an addiction can push a Christian to commit other sins and it follows from this that, having overcome one, one can also cope with others.

Malakia itself is a product of the gravity of fornication, because unclean, bold intentions have a detrimental effect on human spirituality. Such an addiction is unnatural, since fusion with the opposite sex does not occur, while the Christian Church allows fornication only committed among couples who have legalized their relationship and their goal is procreation.

The Holy Fathers spoke about masturbation as follows:

Rev. Abba Serapion: “There are only three types of lustful passion: the first occurs due to sexual confusion; the next one, for which the Most High defeated the son of the patriarch Judah Onan, is produced without merging with the female sex, in Holy Scripture this type of lustful addiction is called uncleanness, which the Apostle spoke about: for those who are celibate or widowed: it would be good for them to remain like me . However, if they cannot restrain themselves, then let them enter into marriage; after all, creating a marriage is much better than succumbing to an addiction.”

Archpriest Vasily Zenkovsky: “Such an act represents serious sexual corruption, since the meaning of sex lies in the essence of the other sex.”

Prayer of St. Mary of Egypt

(Mary left her parents and left Egypt for Alexandria. There she lost her chastity and indulged in unbridled and insatiable fornication, but then she repented and after much prayer set off across the Jordan, into the desert, where she spent 47 years, and the Lord forgave her her sins.)

Audio:

01:12

Oh, great saint of Christ, Reverend Mary! In Heaven you stand before the Throne of God, but on earth you are with us in the spirit of love, having boldness in the Lord, pray to save His servants, who flow to you with love. Ask us from the Most Merciful Master and Lord of faith for immaculate observance of our cities and villages, for deliverance from famine and destruction, for those who mourn - consolation, for those who are sick - healing, for those who have fallen - rise knowledge, strengthening for those who go astray, prosperity and blessing for good deeds, orphans and widows - intercession and eternal rest for those who have departed from this life, but on the day of the terrible Judgment, at the right hand of the land, we will all hear the blessed voice of the Judge of the world: come, blessed of My Father, us follow the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world, and you will abide there forever. Amen.

Atonement for sin by an adulterer

The punishment for adultery is great, and no one is protected from it. Often the punishment for the debauchery of parents is borne by their children, not understanding the reasons for the misfortunes that befall them. To gain salvation, first of all, you need to admit your sin to yourself. Having realized guilt, people usually seek reassurance in prayers. It is best to visit the temple and perform the Sacrament of Confession, repenting before God. During the sacred ceremony, a person reconsiders his values, principles, and returns to the righteous path. Having cleansed his soul and enlightened his mind, he begins to see previously unnoticed possibilities.

However, just attending a church service is not enough. Priests recommend going to church every Sunday, making donations, helping the suffering, and giving alms. Selfless help to the poor, orphans or infirm old people will help atone for this terrible sin.

At home, you need to improve family relationships and make sincere apologies. It’s good to increase your time together, pay more attention to your partner, speak kind words to him more often, and confess your love. All this must be sincere and come from a pure heart.

Priests recommend going to church every Sunday

Prayer to Saint Sarah of Egypt

(Blessed Sarah labored in the Egyptian desert around the 5th century. They say about her that for 13 years she endured the demonic temptation of lustful thoughts. At the same time, Sarah never prayed for this battle to end, but, on the contrary, she indulged in asceticism and fear even more God, repeating: “Lord, give me strength!" One day, when the temptation intensified, the saint went out onto the porch of her cell. Then the spirit of fornication appeared to her in bodily form and said: “You, Sarah, have defeated me.” She answered: “You It was not I who won, but my Teacher Christ.”)

Troparion of the Venerable One, tone 87

Audio:

00:23

In you, mother, it is known that you were saved, even in the image:/ having accepted the cross, you followed Christ/ and, in action, you taught to despise the flesh, for it passes away,/ to be diligent about the souls, things more immortal. // The Angels will also rejoice O Reverend Sarah, your spirit.

In you, mother, that which is in us in God’s image has definitely been preserved: for, having taken up your cross, you followed Christ, and in practice you taught to disdain the flesh as transitory, but to take care of the soul, an immortal creation. That is why your spirit rejoices with the Angels, Saint Sarah.

Kontakion, tone 27

Audio:

00:17

For the love of the Lord, / you hated the desire for peace, / enlightened your spirit with pity: / you conquered the beasts with great strength; / but with your prayers / / the swaying of the enemy was destroyed.

For the sake of love for the Lord, reverend one, you hated the desire for peace, having enlightened your spirit with fasting, for you courageously defeated the beasts; but with your prayers, thwart the uprising of our opponents.

What is fornication in Orthodoxy and why is it a sin?

Fornication is sexual relations between a man and a woman before marriage. For an Orthodox Christian, fornication is a deviation from God’s commandments.

Often modern people, especially young people, are perplexed as to why fornication is a sin, since no harm is caused to other people, and those who enter into physical intimacy bring joy and pleasure to each other. What's wrong with that?

Consequences of fornication

Fornication seems harmless due to the fact that most of the consequences appear months and years later. The desire for immediate pleasure, the denial of potential problems in the future and the absence of them in the present make this passion extremely dangerous for the personality of any person. Despite this, the consequences of fornication are more than significant.

Firstly, if sexual intercourse was unprotected, there is always a risk of developing completely unnecessary diseases. Check yourself - do you get tested and ask your sexual partner about it before each sex session? 99.99% do not do this - because it is long, expensive, and the likelihood of being left without the desired intimacy is huge. Even if this is not done every time, who can guarantee that your partner will not have sexual intercourse with someone else? If there is no such guarantee, then the risks of contracting sexually transmitted infections are even greater.

Secondly, with unprotected sexual intercourse there is always a chance of pregnancy. Are you ready to become a mother and father, to bear responsibility for yourself, your family, your child? Spend much less time on yourself and each other, and much more on your child? Do you have additional funds and income to support it? If you use condoms, you still have a chance of getting pregnant. Unfortunately, young people who are not ready for parental responsibilities resort to modern methods of terminating pregnancy.

Abortion is a terrible consequence of fornication. It is surprising that the legislation of many countries punishes the murder of an adult who is capable of fighting back, while allowing the same murder of a small, helpless individual. In addition, abortion negatively affects the health of the girl who decides to have it and a successful pregnancy in the future.

Thirdly, the lack of skill to maintain purity of body and thoughts before marriage will greatly torment any person entering into a marriage. Internal torment, shame for betrayal in thoughts, replaying in the memory of sex scenes from premarital life, dreams and fantasies that haunt you from watching erotic films are guaranteed consequences of a prodigal life. Often a person gives in in this struggle, the result is divorce and destruction of the family.

Fourthly, a prodigal lifestyle leads to the fact that at the age of 30-40, without a family and children, a person often feels lonely. As a rule, passions gradually fade with age, and the desire to have close people nearby, with whom you can simply talk on any topic, be close, becomes stronger.

Fifthly, fornication and lustful thoughts drive out the Holy Spirit, depriving a person of spiritual support and guidance in earthly life.

The key problem is that a person living in fornication is fixated on himself - on self-gratification. Even if in bed such a person wants to please another, he does this in order to receive recognition from the other of how good he is, in order to stroke his conceit. True love is, first of all, giving, free and selfless.

By committing the sin of fornication, a person moves away from God, showing that he knows better than God how to manage his sex life. Fornication is a consequence of the manifestation of pride. In fact, a person puts himself above God and stops trusting his advice (commandments) on how to live a happy and harmonious life.

Prayer to Jesus Christ against lust

Often the desires of the body are stronger than the moods of the mind and get out of control. Lust takes over a person, and it is difficult to do anything about it. Food restrictions and fasting can help here, but few people agree with this. And just diet doesn't help much. Not everyone understands that fasting is not only a restriction in nutrition, but precisely an intensification of prayerful appeal to God, when the mind and soul can rise above the body and its desires. This is the basic principle of prayer against lust. As a result of prayerful effort, the body is distracted from carnal desires and gradually learns to support spiritual work. This is a necessary condition for the gradual and regular adaptation of the body and mind to the effort of prayer.

Almighty God, Who created all creation with wisdom, lift me up by the hand that has fallen from many sins: help me and help me to free myself from the temptations of the world, from the snares of the devil and from the lusts of the flesh. Have mercy and forgive me all, Your tree has sinned all the days of my life; anoint my soul with the oil of grace and generosity of your only begotten Son, our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, with Him, all glory be due to you and the Holy Spirit forever. Amen.
