Who is Nicholas the Wonderworker
Saint Nicholas was born in the ancient Lycian city of Patara. The geographical location of the state of Lycia corresponds to part of the territory of the modern Turkish provinces of Antalya and Mugla. Nicholas's parents were wealthy people, pious Christians. The boy was instilled with Christian virtues from childhood. Nikolai attended the church at the temple.
After finishing school, Nicholas was left at the church as a prayer reader. The young man stood out for his abilities and commitment to Christian canons. Two years later he became an assistant to the Bishop of Patara with the rank of priest. After the death of his parents, the saint distributed property to the poor. Until the 6th century, holy relics rested under the basilica erected above the grave.
