This is the sin of Ham
Priest Valery Dukhanin:
– Obscene language is always an indicator of who we really are. Because a person’s word always comes from within and what is in your heart is in your words. If you yourself have turned your soul into a dirty swamp and are splashing it through your bad words, then do not think that you will be happy. Because even if you surround yourself with all the blessings, you will still plunge yourself into the dirt with your own speech. Do you really want to wallow in this mud?
What should I say to those who are accustomed to obscenity? Well, at least like this: “Has the most precious word – the word “mother” – become a low, abusive word for you? It’s like cursing yourself, because it’s disrespect for your mother. This is Ham’s sin, which turned against him.” But if the foul-mouthed person laughs and laughs in response, then he has lost his human face and it is unlikely that anything will be explained to him.
The habit of swearing is like an obsession. The swearer sometimes cannot control himself; he is supported from within in order to insert this dirt into his speech. So dark spirits try to spoil everything, desecrate, denigrate, and throw temptations into our soul that destroy us. So choose for yourself what you want: to save your soul or to destroy.
The child must be explained in time that the world lies in evil and that there is no point in imitating it
As for children, it is important to understand: if they have retained respect for you, then they themselves will see and feel this contrast: in the family no one swears, but outside the family, swearing is something that is beyond the boundaries of normal human communication. The child must be explained in time that the world lies in evil and that there is no point in imitating it, just as there is no point in imitating any illness or obsession.
Foul language is a disease of the soul, and this disease goes away when a person communes with the Source of purity - God. Then the soul more subtly perceives that it itself feels bad from all filth and impurity. And true nobility, the height of the soul and its dignity are expressed primarily in pure speech.
Pros of “checkmate”
- Sometimes there are situations when it is simply impossible to do without a strong word. With its help, it is easier to speak out and express the whole range of emotions experienced. But only on the condition that such situations are rare.
- Relieving tension. No matter what beautiful epithets a person chooses to address the offender in order to humiliate his dignity and express indignation, you must admit that this will not work as well as if he had not clearly, succinctly and succinctly formulated his attitude towards him with the help of abuse. Sometimes you can even experience relief and pleasure from a well-chosen word.
- There is a certain contingent of the population, with very limited abilities, who simply do not understand what is being said to them until they use a “special” abusive language.
British scientists have proven
An experiment was once conducted in Britain, during which it was found that a mat helps reduce pain. They took seventy students and divided them, as usual, into two groups. The subjects had to put their hands in very cold water and hold them there for as long as they could handle it.
In the first group, young people had to swear at the most difficult moments, when it became completely unbearable. In the second, repeat some phrase completely devoid of emotional load and meaning. And what do you think the results were? That's right, the foul-mouthed ones won, since on average they stayed in the icy water 45 seconds longer than their, so to speak, opponents.
In addition, it was found that the greatest pain-relieving effect was achieved by those who practically do not use strong words in everyday life. If you remember, the right hemisphere of a person is responsible for emotions, but the left is for speech. So, at the moment of using curse words, the body releases endorphins, joy hormones, which affect various centers of the brain. They cause a feeling of euphoria, which helps reduce sensitivity, hence the pain-relieving effect.
Foul language is a prayer to Satan
Priest Lev Arshakyan:
– Obscene language is, in short, a prayer to Satan, by and large. She is the crown of that malice that hides in our heart and spills out from there. This greatly harms the one who defiles himself with this demonic malice and spews it out of himself in the form of obscene language.
True, what forces me to show some caution in relation to obscene words is that Elder Pavel (Gruzdev) sometimes resorted to them. Apparently, the decisive factor here is what is going on inside a person. He certainly had peace within. He may have picked up these words in the camps, but they did not come to him as an expression of anger. Maybe they were useful to someone as a way of humility.
But this is a separate case. We cannot try on the experience of the elders. It is important for us, lay people, ordinary people, to understand that this is blasphemy against the Mother of God, against everything holy, that this is a prayer to demons. This greatly destroys health – both mental and physical. This breaks our relationship with God and calls demons to us who feed on our sins. Man is becoming more and more enslaved by them, which can lead to very disastrous consequences.
Put in a word for Russian swearing
The idea to write this article came to me when I asked myself a few questions. 1. What is Russian mate? 2. When did Russian swearing appear? 3. Who is bothered by Russian swearing? Why is it considered obscene? 4. What to do with Russian obscenities?
First of all, you need to define the meaning of the concept of MAT.
• In everyday life it is a wicker mat, bedding (what protects the floor from abrasion). • In jewelry production, this is a reduction in the shine of the product (protection from the need to maintain the shine of the surface). • In glass production, this is a reduction in the transparency of glass (protection from the possibility of peeking through the glass). • In chess, this is a hopeless position of the main piece (such a defense of one’s pieces when none of them can be “taken”). • In general, this is an extremely disastrous situation. • Scream with good obscenities - cry out with all your might for help, ask for protection.
In addition, the word MAT has a common root with the following words:
• Matas – buffoon (priest of the goddess Mary). • Matasitsya – to dangle, swing, break, jump in different ways (similar to magic, or rituals among shamans). • Matter – everything that weighs, everything that occupies space, substance. • Seasoned – huge, dense, healthy, portly. • Mother – to have, to have; woman who gave birth to a child, parent. • Checkmate – put in a hopeless position, limit the opponent’s capabilities.
Through swearing we connect with the infernal world
Priest Alexander Dyachenko:
- I find obscene language disgusting. I have already told you that I grew up in an army environment, where almost everyone curses. That’s why swearing was once natural for me. And only then, two decades later, I managed to get rid of this dark confusion. But how much work had to be done for this!
Over the years of serving at the Throne, I have become convinced from my own experience that through swearing we connect with the infernal world. Almost everyone swears, maybe except believers. People have become familiar with swearing and do not even notice how the dark principle has curbed their soul. This is what my story “Is my tongue my friend?”, published on the website “Pravoslavie.ru”, is about.
From the latest observations. On July 8, on the eve of our patronal feast day, in the evening after the all-night vigil I go to the bakery to buy pies for tomorrow's table. At the entrance, an elderly watchwoman, hearing that she needed to open the gate because they had come from the church to buy pies, laughed and made a biting, obscene joke, the meaning of which was: “Never!”
Having loaded up, before driving off, I congratulated the women on the upcoming holiday and briefly told them about the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, and my grandmother burst into tears. It turns out that on this day six years ago her son tragically died.
How to protect children from swearing? Do not swear yourself and do not allow anyone to swear in a conversation with you. Explain to children the harmfulness of this action.
Once upon a time, only the lowest, uneducated strata of Russian society swore. In the army, officers never swore among themselves, although in communication with soldiers, especially scolding subordinates, the commander could “bend”, but before that he uttered the obligatory phrase: “Applies to everyone except gentlemen officers and volunteers!”
After the October Socialist Revolution, those for whom swearing was the norm of life came to power. They dealt with the aristocrats, destroyed the priests and nobles, and expelled the university professors. And society became what it became.
What should we ask from young girls if the respected professor and popularizer of science Tatyana Chernigovskaya considers swearing only an additional means of communication and does not see anything bad in its total dissemination?!
How to counter this phenomenon? Only through prevention and painstaking explanatory work everywhere, starting with creative bohemia, high officials and even professors. I would just really like that those on whom this depends, not limiting themselves to empty declarations, would themselves be an example for everyone.
Events in Petrograd in 1917 and Kiev in 2014 confirmed the connection between swearing and revolutions
Archpriest Vladimir Sedov:
- Foul language can be different, sometimes it happens like in a well-known joke: they don’t swear, they talk like that. This phenomenon is more social and cultural, the fashion in society is for promiscuity and permissiveness, and people, especially young people, easily succumb to this. Of course, there is nothing good in this, words have their own power, but just as we often pray mechanically and our life changes little from such prayer, “habitual” foul language is also possible, which, like external dirt, does not penetrate into the depths of the soul.
If we are restrained in everything: in food, in spectacles and in our external behavior, then it will be easier to bridle our tongue
When we swear “in our hearts,” it’s already like a heartfelt prayer, only addressed not to God, but to evil forces, and its effect on the soul is corresponding: we let demons into the soul, and they pollute everything there, destroy and devastate. And we feel it after fits of anger. We must fight this evil by cultivating in the soul the fear of God and the thought of His omnipresence. If we are restrained in everything: in food, in spectacles and in our external behavior, then it will be easier to bridle our tongue. Then our children, seeing a good example before them, will follow it.
And we need laws prohibiting foul language to work, because we were able to quickly eradicate smoking in public places. All prudent people should desire and contribute to the strengthening of state power and law enforcement agencies. The interconnection and sequence of events are absolutely obvious: “peaceful” demonstrations – a coup – dirt on the streets, a cigarette in the teeth and swearing. Events in Petrograd in 1917 and Kiev in 2014 provided a clear illustration of this.
Swearing came from the pagan rituals of the Slavs
Before the baptism of Rus', the ancient Slavs used swear words during pagan rituals. With the help of these special words, the pagans scared away evil spirits and turned to other worlds. They demonstrated their fighting spirit and willingness to fight the demons.
After the adoption of Christianity, they began to explain to people that foul language is a grave sin. Nevertheless, swear words became commonplace, and new derivative swear words appeared.
Profanity is a grave sin.
The tsarist government severely punished foul language. Those who swore were publicly flogged with rods so that others would be discouraged.
In the tsarist army, swearing was severely punished. Suvorov told the soldiers: “Pray to God. Victory comes from him. He is our general."
