Uses

Judaism

  • Reads in its entirety as the fifth paragraph of Kabbalat Shabbat.[3]
  • Verse 3 is part of Et Shem in the Blessings before the Shema during Shacharit.[4]
  • Verses 5 and 9 are read sequentially at the beginning of the book. Pesukei Dezimra.[5] These verses are also read by the congregation when the Torah Scroll is taken from the ark.[6]
  • Verse 6 is found in Grounds for Repentance read on the eve of Rosh Hashanah.[7]
  • According to Siddur Avodas Israel, Psalm 99 should be read as an additional “Psalm of the day” on Shabbat Parshat Shemot.

History of writing

The author of the writing is King David. And if in most psalms there is a certain historical moment, then in this creation of the prophet it is not. Here we find only strong experiences described during a difficult time for the king.

Analysis of the verses suggests that the prayer was written in old age and is something similar to instructions to future generations. The ruler lived a fairly long life and put into this song all his wisdom that he managed to accumulate during his service to God.

When is Psalm 99 read?

The psalm is read in a sincere and joyful state, when there is a need to glorify God and everything connected with Him. Faith is significantly strengthened when we realize our purpose in Divine Providence and know what we live for. Only the Creator can save a person, and it is to Him that we must entrust our lives. Faith helps you stay in touch with Him and not lose hope for improvement.

As mentioned above, prayer is read in churches during services. Tradition prescribes the use of Church Slavonic in this case. The melody and volume of the language creates the right mood. For private (home) reading, the version in Russian is suitable.

Pray in front of the icon by candlelight. Only in this case will the blessing of the Almighty come upon you.

A comment

This psalm is the last of the “enthronement psalms” (Psalm 47; ; –99). It begins with the familiar statement: “YHWH is King,” followed by references to justice and righteousness (verse 4), the covenant with its moral demands (verses 4,7), centered on Zion (verse 2; cf. “His holy mountain,” verse 9).[2]

Some similarities to Deuteronomy Isaiah is the call to the nations to fear God. He is unique in calling Moses, Aaron and Samuel "three great intercessors" (cf. Exodus 32:11–14, 31–4; Numbers 12:13; 14:13–19; 16:44–8; 1st Kings 7:7–11) and depicts the triple "Holy" (verses 3, 5, 9).[2] The "footstool of God" in verse 5 may refer to the "ark" (1 Chronicles 28:2), the 'temple Jerusalem' (Lamentations 2:1), or 'the whole earth' (Isaiah 66:1).[2] The Greek Septuagint (LXX) has the title: “Psalm of David.”[2]

Interpretation

The song is short, but carries great meaning. The Lord does everything for people, saves them from troubles and adversity. But are people grateful for this? God can feel praised when a believer prays in His honor. Don't forget to pray to God. This way His powers will increase, and He will help you more often. A detailed analysis of each verse will help you understand the work in more detail.

  • Verse 1. In these lines there is a praise of the Lord as the great Creator.
  • Verse 2-3. Believers understand that living according to the Laws of God is vital. Only in this case will blessing come to our heads. Love the Lord, but not through force. Be happy in the moments when you praise Him. The Almighty and people are one, because the former created people in his own image and likeness and now protects them from harm.
  • Verse 4-5. If you praise God, He will in turn give you protection and blessings. These lines contain, probably, the final thought of the life path of the author-king, who spent his entire life in righteous adherence to the Laws of God.

It is worth taking this work as a kind of memoir summary. King David really existed and ruled the Kingdom of Judah. Throughout his life, many misfortunes occurred; his life threatened to end at any moment. But the king lived it with dignity and left to his descendants the truth contained in this psalm.

1 Prayer of Moses, the man of God.

2 Lord! You are our refuge forever and ever.

3 Before the mountains were born, You formed the earth and the world, and from everlasting to everlasting You are God.

4 You return man to corruption and say: Return, sons of men!

5 For in Your sight a thousand years are like yesterday when it is past, and like a watch in the night.

6 You carry them away like a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that grows in the morning, blooms and turns green in the morning, is cut down in the evening and dries up;

7 For we are destroyed by Your wrath, and by Your wrath we are dismayed.

8 Thou hast laid our iniquities before Thee, and our secrets before the light of Thy countenance.

9 All our days have passed in Your wrath; we are losing our summers like a sound.

10 The days of our years are seventy years, and with greater strength, eighty years; and their best time is labor and illness, for they pass quickly, and we fly.

11 Who knows the power of Your anger, and Your wrath according to the measure of Your fear?

12 Teach us to number our days in this way, that we may acquire a wise heart.

13 Turn, O Lord! How long? Have mercy on Your servants.

14 Satiate us early with Your mercy, and we will rejoice and be glad all our days.

15 Make us glad for the days in which You struck us, for the years in which we saw disaster.

16 Let Your work appear on Your servants and Your glory on their sons;

17 And may the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and prosper us in the work of our hands, prosper us in the work of our hands.

[David's song of praise.]

1 He who dwells under the shelter of the Most High rests in the shadow of the Almighty,

2 He says to the Lord: “My refuge and my defense, my God in whom I trust!”

3 He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, from the destructive plague,

4 He will overshadow you with His feathers, and under His wings you will be safe; shield and fence - His truth.

5 You will not fear the terrors of the night, nor the arrows that fly by day,

6 The plague that walks in darkness, the plague that destroys at midday.

7 A thousand shall fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but will not come close to you:

8 Only you will look with your eyes and see the retribution of the wicked.

9 For you have said, “The Lord is my hope”; You have chosen the Most High as your refuge;

10 No evil will befall you, and no plague will come near your dwelling;

11 For He will command His angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways:

12 They will carry you up in their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone;

13 You will tread on the asp and basilisk; You will trample on the lion and the dragon.

14 “Because he loved Me, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he has known My name.

15 He will call to Me, and I will hear him; I am with him in sorrow; I will deliver him and glorify him,

16 I will satisfy him with long days, and show him My salvation.”

1 Psalm. Song for the Sabbath day.

2 It is good to praise the Lord and sing to Your name, O Most High,

3 To proclaim Your mercy in the morning and Your truth in the night,

4 on a ten-stringed instrument and a psalter, with a song on the harp.

5 For You have made me glad, O Lord, in Your creation: I admire the works of Your hands.

6 How great are Your works, O Lord! Your thoughts are wonderfully deep!

7 A foolish man does not know, and an ignorant man does not understand.

8 While the wicked spring up like grass, and the workers of iniquity bloom to perish forever,

9 You, O Lord, are exalted forever!

10 For behold, thy enemies, O Lord, behold, thy enemies perish, and all the workers of iniquity are scattered;

11 But You exalt my horn like the horn of a unicorn, and I am anointed with fresh oil;

12 And my eye looks on my enemies, and my ears hear about the evildoers who rise up against me.

13 The righteous blooms like a palm tree, and stands tall like a cedar in Lebanon.

14 Planted in the house of the Lord, they bloom in the courts of our God;

15 even in old age they are fruitful, juicy and fresh,

16 To proclaim that the Lord is righteous, my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

PSALM 92

[David's song of praise. On the day before the Sabbath, when the earth is inhabited.]

1 The Lord reigns; He is clothed with majesty, the Lord is clothed with power [and] girded: therefore the universe is solid, it will not be moved.

2 Thy throne is established from time immemorial: Thou art from everlasting.

3 The rivers lift up their voices, O Lord, the rivers lift up their waves.

4 But greater than the noise of many waters, and the mighty waves of the sea, is the Lord mighty in the highest.

5 Your revelations are undoubtedly true. To your house, O Lord, belongs holiness for many days to come.

PSALM 93

[Psalm of David on the fourth day of the week.]

1 God of vengeance, Lord God of vengeance, reveal Yourself!

2 Arise, Judge of the earth, give vengeance to the proud.

3 How long, O Lord, will the wicked, how long will the wicked triumph?

4 They spew out bold speeches; all who practice iniquity are magnified;

5 They trample down your people, O Lord, they oppress your inheritance;

6 The widow and the stranger are killed, and the orphans are put to death.

7 And they say: “The Lord will not see, and the God of Jacob will not know.”

8 Come to your senses, you foolish people! When will you be smart, ignoramuses?

9 He who fills the ear will not hear? and the eye that formed will not see?

10 He who admonishes the nations will not reprove—He who teaches man understanding?

11 The Lord knows the thoughts of men, that they are vanity.

12 Blessed is the man whom You admonish, O Lord, and instruct in Your law,

13 to give him rest in the days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked!

14 For the Lord will not reject His people, nor forsake His inheritance.

15 For judgment will return to righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it.

16 Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? who will stand for me against the workers of iniquity?

17 If the Lord had not been my helper, my soul would soon have entered a land of silence.

18 When I said, “My foot falters,” Thy mercy, O Lord, upheld me.

19 When my sorrows multiply in my heart, Your consolations delight my soul.

20 Will the seat of destroyers, plotting violence contrary to the law, stand near You?

21 They rush in crowds against the soul of the righteous and condemn innocent blood.

22 But the Lord is my defense, and my God is the rock of my refuge,

23 And he will turn their iniquity upon them, and by their wickedness he will destroy them; the Lord our God will destroy them.

[David's song of praise.]

1 Come, let us sing to the Lord, let us shout to God, the rock of our salvation;

2 Let us come before His face with praise, let us shout to Him in songs,

3 For the Lord is the great God and the great King over all gods.

4 The depths of the earth are in His hand, and the tops of the mountains are His;

5 The sea is His, and He made it, and His hands formed the dry land.

6 Come, let us worship and fall down, let us kneel before the face of the Lord our Creator;

7 For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand. Oh, if you would now listen to His voice:

8 “Do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as in the day of temptation in the wilderness,

9 Where your fathers tempted Me, tried Me, and saw My work.

10 For forty years I was provoked by this generation, and I said, “This is a people that is deceived in heart; they have not known My ways,

11 Therefore I swore in My wrath that they should not enter My rest.”

4 For the Lord is great and highly praised; he is fearful above all gods.

5 For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord created the heavens.

6 Glory and majesty are before Him, power and splendor are in His sanctuary.

7 Give to the Lord, O tribes of nations, give to the Lord glory and honor;

8 Give the Lord glory to His name, bring gifts and go into His courts;

9 Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness. Tremble before His face, all the earth!

10 Tell the nations: The Lord reigns! Therefore the universe is solid and will not be shaken. He will judge the nations with justice.

12 Let the field rejoice and all that is in it, and let all the trees of the grove rejoice.

3 Fire goes before Him and burns His enemies around.

4 His lightning illuminates the world; the earth sees and trembles.

5 The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the Lord of all the earth.

6 The heavens declare His righteousness, and all nations see His glory.

7 Let all those who serve idols, those who boast in idols, be put to shame. Bow down before Him, all you gods.

8 Zion hears and rejoices, and the daughters of Judah rejoice because of Your judgments, O Lord,

9 For You, O Lord, are high above all the earth, exalted above all gods.

10 You who love the Lord, hate evil! He guards the souls of His saints; He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

11 Light shines on the righteous, and joy on the upright in heart.
