The life story of Prince Oleg Bryansky, the icon of the saint and what it helps with

Oleg Bryansky

Oleg Romanovich Bryansky
, baptized
Leonty
, monastically
Vasily
(c. 1245 - 1307) [1], holy noble prince, reverend. Commemorated September 20 on the day of death, in the Cathedrals of the Bryansk and Volyn saints

Grandson of the holy prince martyr Mikhail of Chernigov, son of the first Bryansk prince, blessed Roman.

The Ipatiev Chronicle mentions that the blessed prince Oleg in 1274, together with his father, participated in the war against Lithuania. Having learned the vanity of earthly happiness, he granted the Chernigov and Bryansk principalities to his brother and his son, and he himself decided to serve God in the monastic rank. In 1275, he built the Petrovsky Monastery in Bryansk, where he took monastic vows with the name Vasily. Church archives testify that in this monastery the blessed prince died as a strict ascetic on September 20, 1307 and was buried in the monastery church.

Brief biography of the blessed prince

The legends about the deeds and life of Oleg Romanovich, for the most part, were lost, and only meager scraps have survived to this day. However, they are enough to form an idea of the merits of the noble prince and understand his love for Christian values.

Origin

Oleg Romanovich was born approximately in 1254, in the family of the Prince of Bryansk and Chernigov - Roman Bryansk. No less famous is his grandfather, Mikhail Vsevolodovich Chernigovsky, who did not betray his faith under pressure from the Mongol-Tatar invaders, for which he was executed to a painful death.

Some life details

The following acts of Oleg Romanovich are officially known, which not only have survived to this day, but also had a serious impact on the course of history:

  • in 1274 he took part in the campaign against Lithuania;
  • and in 1286 he took an active part in a military campaign against the lands of the Smolensk Principality, but suffered a crushing defeat;
  • later abdicated the throne in favor of his brother Mikhail, and he himself took monastic vows and became a monk in the Bryansk Peter and Paul Monastery.

Note! Having taken monastic vows, Oleg changed his name. According to one version, the new name sounded like Vasily, according to others - like Leonty.

Feat

The feat of the holy prince was that he was able to renounce power and the honors that go hand in hand with it, in the name of faith. In that era, this was virtually an unprecedented act, perceived with bewilderment by other rulers. Oleg himself had a completely different opinion on this matter. In addition to the fact that he left the laurels of the ruler, the church in which he took monastic vows was built with his own savings.

Relics

The relics of the saint were kept for a long time in one of the churches of the Peter and Paul Monastery. In 1930, a decision was made to rebury the relics in order to protect them from acts of vandalism by non-believers. This action was kept secret for a long time and only in 1995 the relics were found again, thanks to the efforts of scientific search groups.

Holy places

Throughout Russia and beyond its borders there are shrines where this saint is honored. Here are the ones that are most often mentioned:

  • chapel in the village of Khotenka in the Kaluga region;
  • church in Krasnoyarsk;
  • temple in Pyatigorsk;
  • holy place in Kyiv and others.

The most prominent representative is the temple of Oleg Bryansky in Novosibirsk. It is located in the Oktyabrsky district of the city. It was consecrated on June 24, 2013, and then a couple of days later the bishop’s consecration took place. It was conducted by Vladyka Tikhon himself. All information about its work, services and other things can be found on the Internet on the monastery website. O. V. Shabunevich played a major role in its emergence. Initially, he donated a plot for him, and for the day of consecration he brought an icon of the saint with part of his relics.

What can you ask for?

When turning to the icon of St. Oleg of Bryansk in any church, parishioners can ask for:

  • help in difficult times for yourself and your loved ones;
  • help in the fight against sinful thoughts and actions;
  • giving strength on the path to achieving spirituality;
  • liberation from fears and doubts that prevent you from doing good deeds;
  • finding faith for those people who have lost it due to difficult life circumstances.

Note! Under no circumstances ask the saint to harm others or for help for selfish purposes that do not carry a good message. You will achieve nothing, and evil thoughts can be turned against yourself.

Help in difficult times

Saint Oleg never refused to help others during his lifetime. After canonization, the saint continues to support believers, making their path easier among everyday hardships and misunderstandings.

The fight against sins and vices

A person who has managed to curb his own ego, giving up power over other people, is more capable than anyone else in pacifying internal demons. If you are tormented by heavy thoughts about what you have done or bad habits do not leave you, pray to Saint Oleg of Bryansk.

Help in finding spirituality

There are many legends among parishioners that tell of the onset of spiritual enlightenment at the moment of prayer to the saint. Before this, they were either in a deep religious crisis, or did not believe in the Almighty at all. However, the desire to gain faith and sincere prayers helped them look at the world from a different perspective.

Liberation from fears and doubts

Lack of confidence in oneself and one’s own strengths has ruined a great many undertakings that in the future could radically change a person’s destiny. Prayers to Saint Oleg Bryansky will help you gain faith in your own importance and give impetus to personal development.

Helps in returning the lost to faith

You can ask the saint not only for yourself, but also for your friends and relatives, whose thoughts are dangerously far from God. Reading prayers to the saint will help rid a person of the corrupting influence of evil forces, thus returning him to the light.

Holy face

Most often, those who bear the same name are advised to purchase and have in their home an icon of St. Oleg of Bryansk. But this is not at all a necessary condition. It is believed that she will always accompany and help in any endeavor of her owner. They send their prayers to her in any difficult life situations.

In Bryansk, she is considered a patron, a symbol and a local shrine. It is recommended to turn to it in situations where a person’s faith has been shaken or he doubts the correctness of Orthodox dogma. Its effect is also aimed at giving peace to the soul, distraction from the unnecessary vanity of modernity.

Troparion

From your youth, having loved Christ with all your heart, reverend, you left earthly glory as if it were passing away, and you left the kingdom of the earth as nothing, counting the monk’s face joyfully and the city of Bryansk with many labors, like the sun shining brightly, you illuminated it: thus, having become an adornment of the Trinity, pray to the prince Oleg, Christ God, save our souls.

Kontakion

You became like the fruitful shoot from the honest root, the noble Olezha, having loved the truth and the imperishable life of Christ. In the same way, through prayer, vigil and fasting, the great lamp, having become your disciple, enlighten, blessed one, your Fatherland and save our souls.

Greatness

We please you, blessed Prince Olezha, and honor your holy memory, for you pray for us to Christ our God.

Prayer

Oh, reverend father, blessed Prince Olezh, zealous servant of Christ, warm prayer book to the Lord, protector in troubles and tireless comforter in sorrows! Look, most blessed one, mercifully at your city and see your children humbly falling down and wanting to serve you. Do not reject those who require your help, but as a benefactor and intercessor, pray ever since the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ may bless the Russian country, preserving it in peace and good faith, multiplying its cities, preserving His property. Offer up, our God-bearing Father, this small prayer of your unworthy servants to the Master Christ, may the living spirit of right faith and love, unshakable piety, Christ-consistent wisdom be established in the Holy Orthodox Church, may the shepherds be granted zeal for the salvation of people, to enlighten the unbeliever and guide the erring convert and attract those who have fallen away. Rather, let all the children of the Orthodox Church remain pure from worldly temptations, carnal lusts, superstition, superstitions and enemy obsessions. To her, saint of God, do not despise us who pray to you, but help us with your speedy intercession, so that having escaped all troubles, misfortunes and sorrows in this temporary life, we will find a shameless death, and thus having lived on earth pleasing to God, we will be worthy of heavenly life in heaven, where together with you we will glorify the love of mankind and generosity in the Trinity of the glorified God, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.

Prince Oleg Bryansky - grandson of the martyr Prince Mikhail of Chernigov

The life of Saint Oleg is quite short. In the 13th century, when the Mongol-Tatar invasion took place, life in Rus' practically died down. All cities and villages were wasted in vain and burned from the face of the earth. Many people were destroyed and driven into slavery.

It was at this time that one can see how the personal qualities of many Russian princes manifest themselves. Many of them sought protection from their own invaders, and also wanted to gain the right to reign at any cost.

And some, like Prince Mikhail of Chernigov, preferred heavenly glory. For his loyalty to the people and Rus', he was martyred in the Horde.

When he was in the Horde, the khan demanded that Prince Mikhail bow to idols. He threatened him with execution if he did not do this. The people around Mikhail tried to persuade him to yield to the khan, but Prince Mikhail answered them that he wanted to be a Christian not just in words, but also in his deeds. On September 20, 1246, Mikhail of Chernigov suffered martyrdom for the sake of God.

Mikhail Chernigov martyr is the grandfather of Oleg Bryansk, as he suffered martyrdom for the sake of Christ God, when the khan called him to worship idols

The Holy Synod issued a decree on the celebration of the day of the Holy Saints of God

In 1897, the Holy Synod responded to the petition of the Bryansk City Duma, in which it issued the following decree:

“Based on attention to the pious zeal of the citizens of the city of Bryansk and according to the review of His Grace Orlovsky, the Holy Synod determines: to hold an annual solemn celebration in the city of Bryansk in honor of the Holy Saints Oleg and Polycarp, on the days of their memory, allowing at the same time to proclaim the names of these saints of God on holidays "

Also, on July 13, 1990, the Duma announced that September 20 is the day of remembrance of the Bryansk saint. This day was also considered a non-trading day. From that moment on, solemn services began to be held in all churches in the city of Bryansk.

The Holy Synod published a faithful monthly book, in which Saint Blessed Oleg was included.

September 20

Memorial Day of Oleg Bryansky

After some time, the burial of Oleg’s relics took place, since the clergy were afraid that the atheists would mock them. The burial took place with the blessing of Archbishop Daniel of Bryansk. The relics were reburied in the basement under the Altar of the monastery temple. Those people who took part in this promised not to tell anyone.

In 1995, the location of the holy relics was discovered by Maria Belova, who was present at their reburial.

On August 10 of the same year, the relics of the Holy Blessed Prince Oleg were recovered again. Since then they have been openly in the Vvedensky Church. On Sundays, an akathist is performed before the relics.

In 2003, His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' established the celebration of the Council of Bryansk Saints on the day of memory of Prince Oleg Bryansk. In 2012, the relics from the Church of the Resurrection were transferred to the Bryansk Cathedral in honor of the Holy Trinity.

The shrine with the relics of Oleg Bryansky is located in one of the Peter and Paul churches

After his death, Oleg Bryansky was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church. The reliquary with the relics was placed in one of the Peter and Paul churches.

This is what the relics of Oleg Bryansky look like today

In 1701, the holy relics rested in a wooden church. At the same time, a stone church was built in honor of the Entry of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Vvedensky Church has several chapels. One was consecrated in honor of the Apostles Peter and Paul. And the other is in honor of the icon of the Mother of God of the Sign.

In 1893, Prince Konstantin Konstantinovich decided to donate to the monastery where the relics of Oleg were located, an icon “... with a silver-gilded lamp for it, weighing 2 pounds 17 spools and four five-percent tickets of 150 rubles each, so that the interest from these tickets would go to the unquenchable tree lamp in front of this icon.”

Memorial Day of Oleg Bryansky October 3

In the same monastery, the prince performed a monastic feat. He died on September 20 (October 3), 1307. His holy memory is celebrated in the Russian Orthodox Church on October 3.

Oleg Bryansky was canonized for his deep faith in the Lord. Although he was the heir to a large principality, he still decided that serving the Lord was much more important. That is why he founded the Bryansk Monastery, where he lived as a monk. Leaving a post and becoming a simple monk is, in fact, a rather decisive act.

The body of Oleg Bryansky was buried under cover in the cathedral church of his own monastery.

The day of remembrance of St. Oleg is celebrated as the day of a meek but persistent person. It was this man who was capable of action with a capital letter. Saint Oleg was sure that no physical goods have the same value as spiritual ones.

One of the early icons of Prince Oleg is located in the Peter and Paul Monastery in the city of Bryansk

There is also an icon to Oleg Bryansky. One of the earliest icons is located in the Peter and Paul Monastery in the city of Bryansk. Such an icon can be seen if you visit this monastery. The icon depicts Oleg Bryansky in the robes of a monk.

In the icon, Prince Oleg Bryansky is dressed in monastic attire, as he took monastic vows with the name Vasily in the Peter and Paul Church

The monk holds the temple in one hand. And his other hand points to his sacred abode. In this way, he shows people that the church is the house of the Lord, where every person can find peace and support.
