Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos: history of origin

Reliable information about the author, place and time of compilation of the first Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos has not been preserved. There are several versions. Most researchers point to the 6th-7th centuries, during the reign between the Byzantine emperors Justinian I (527-565) and Heraclius (610-641).

According to the most common version, the author is considered to be the Venerable Roman the Sweet Singer (died in 556). The great akathist in the 12th hayretism (greeting) of each ikos has a refrain (repeated throughout the entire work) “Rejoice, Unbrided Bride.” These same words are contained in the kontakion of the Feast of the Annunciation (April 7), compiled by the Venerable Roman the Sweet Singer.

However, many researchers are inclined to believe that the akathist to the Mother of God was compiled by the deacon of the Church of Constantinople, George of Pisidia. Tradition says that he wrote a hymn of praise at the inspiration of the Mother of God after the Byzantine victory over the Persians who were besieging Constantinople in 626. Being in a hopeless situation, the residents of the city resorted to the Mother of God in their prayers for help. Miraculously, Constantinople survived. Grateful residents sang the composed akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos all night. This day fell on Saturday of the 5th week of Lent. In memory of this event, the Church established the celebration of the Praise of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

“We give glory to the Most Holy Theotokos, the One who carried a special cross through life, who showed us an example not only of holiness of life, purity of mind and heart, love, but also patience, courage, the ability to worthily and savingly bear the heaviest cross, which alone saves person. The Most Holy Theotokos was raptured into heaven not only because She revealed in Herself the greatest gift of Divine grace, but also because She supported this gift with Her life.

We glorify the Most Pure Queen of Heaven and learn from Her the life-saving bearing of the cross, we glorify Her as the intercessor of the human race, Who, having walked the sorrowful paths of Her earthly existence, now stands before Her Son and our Lord in glory and, we believe, prays for us, strengthening each one in his own bearing the cross, strengthening everyone on the path to salvation in the implementation and proclamation of God’s truth” (Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus').
