Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos before the Kazan Icon: text

Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

When is the akathist to the Kazan Mother of God read? In Russian Orthodoxy, “Kazan” is one of the most widespread and revered icons of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus. It is inspired by the ancient image of the Virgin Mary "Hodegetria" ("Guide"). However, “Kazan” has so many variants that it is often considered as an independent type of Russian Mother of God iconography.

Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

The Virgin Mary in the icon is depicted frontally up to the shoulders, with the Infant of God standing in her left hand. It is presented from the front to the waist, so the hands of the Mother of God, as a rule, are not visible. Jesus' left hand is also hidden under the robe. The right one is raised in a blessing gesture. The Mother's head is slightly inclined towards the Son, but their gaze is directed directly at the viewer. However, some versions of the Kazan image represent the Virgin Mary looking a little to the side. Icons may also differ in the color of the background and the robes of Mary and the Infant God.

My Prayer – “My Marriage Story”

“I once met a religious procession, they were carrying the icon of the Kazan Mother of God. The feeling was indescribable, very strong energy, I couldn’t come to my senses all day. I went to see off the face of the Mother of God, because I couldn’t get married for a long time. All the wrong men came across. Many will now say, well, after the Procession she found her betrothed, but no. I will answer the skeptics that this was only the very beginning of my introduction to the Divine.

Varvara, 40 years old, Krasnodar

I got married, but much later (only 2 years ago), and I addressed my request to the Saint a long time ago. After that, I felt the power emanating from the icon. I decided to visit the temple, listened to the troparion several times, and went to a couple of other icons of the Kazan Mother of God. The money was quickly spent on travel, so I decided to pray at home and go to the local temple. I felt like God was with me, helping me, protecting me. It appeared precisely after I walked with the icon of the Mother of God with the procession of the cross.

If earlier I was advised to write my desire on paper several times, burn it and dispel it somewhere, now there is no need for these rituals. There was only an inner aspiration to the Almighty, Faith in him. I think it was then that something changed in me, which allowed me to reach my goal without damaging my soul. Now I’m married, and we’re renovating the future nursery.”

Finding of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

The origin of the icon is unknown. Its original, probably written by a certain ancient Russian monk, was lost for a long time. The miraculous discovery of the holy image took place in 1579 in Kazan. This happened after a large-scale fire that destroyed a significant part of the city. The young daughter of one of the residents saw the Mother of God three times in a dream, indicating the location of the lost shrine.

The icon turned out to be hidden in the ground. She was found and solemnly, with a prayer service and procession, she was transferred to the Annunciation Cathedral. During this event, two people were healed of blindness. A list (copy) of the icon, as well as a story about its discovery and miracles, was sent to Tsar Ivan the Terrible in Moscow. The Russian Church celebrates the discovery of the Kazan image of the Mother of God on July 21. On this day, Orthodox Christians most often read the Akathist to the Kazan Icon.

Appearance of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos in the city of Kazan (1579)

Islam and paganism dominated in Kazan at that time. Believers sought to attract lost people to Christianity. However, the most powerful impact was made by God's miracle - the appearance of the icon of the Virgin Mary. This is an ancient image that was lost under the ashes during a large fire that engulfed a significant part of the city of Kazan. The face of the Mother of God was considered destroyed. The Great Fire in Kazan was a sign of the end of the dominance of Islam in these territories.

And so it happened: when the fire destroyed a significant part of the city, the first miracle soon happened - the Mother of God appeared to a girl named Matrona, whose father was building a house nearby. She ordered to dig up the icon, which was hidden under the thickness of the earth. At one time, it was buried there by the first Orthodox Christians, persecuted by Muslims. Now the icon had to be dug up, but no one believed Matrona. As a result, the Virgin Mary appeared 2 more times. In total, Matrona saw the face of the Mother of God three times.

Ultimately she, with the help of her mother

dug up an image of the face of the Saint and Christ in infancy.

After the discovery of the icon, the archbishop arrived exactly where Matrona (and the Mother of God to her) had pointed. He donated the shrine to the Church of St. Nicholas, located nearby. When the prayers were read, the icon went further - to the Annunciation Cathedral. Where it was discovered, the Mother of God nunnery was erected. When the icon was carried to its final destination, a miracle happened during the religious procession - two elders were healed and their sight was restored.

Another miracle was the rapid advancement of Metropolitan Hermogenes up the hierarchical ladder. He became the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus'. Thanks to this, further events took place, for example, he gave a blessing, supported the faith during the Polish-Lithuanian occupation, and helped overcome the Time of Troubles. The date July 8 (from 1579) is marked in the Orthodox Church calendar.

Kazan Icon of the Mother of God: history and veneration

For several decades, the icon was venerated only at the local level. At the end of the 16th century, Kazan Metropolitan Hermogenes, the future Patriarch of Moscow, collected numerous testimonies of her miracles. This is mainly the healing of the sick.

At the beginning of the 17th century, during the Polish-Lithuanian intervention, Patriarch Hermogenes blessed the people's militia with a list of the miraculous Kazan image of the Mother of God to liberate Moscow from the enemy. In the fall of 1612, the capital was liberated. This event served to establish a special day of celebration in honor of the icon - November 4. In the mid-17th century, her veneration became nationwide.

A richly decorated original of the Kazan image of the Virgin Mary was stolen from the Bogoroditsky Monastery in the early 20th century. The thieves were arrested, but the icon could not be saved. Probably, the attackers destroyed the shrine, having first removed the jewelry from it.

Today there is a list of the Kazan Icon in almost every church of the Moscow Patriarchate. In honor of this image of the Mother of God, many churches and monasteries were erected. Since 2011, a copy of the icon has been stored on the International Space Station. The most revered Kazan icons today are the St. Petersburg list (sent to Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century) and the Moscow list (which took part in the liberation of Moscow from the Poles). The first was transported from Moscow to St. Petersburg under Peter I and is now kept in the local Kazan Cathedral. The second is located in the Epiphany Patriarchal Cathedral of the capital.

What is an akathist?

Akathist is a genre of Orthodox church chants. A work of this genre can be dedicated to the Lord, the Mother of God, a saint, a Christian holiday, or an icon of the Mother of God. Akathists have a solemn, laudatory and grateful character. These chants mention significant events in the life of the sacred person, her spiritual exploits:

“The Akathist expresses a dogmatic and poetic contemplation of a miracle, which explains its static nature; it is, as it were, a verbal icon of a sacred person or a blessed event” (Theological-Liturgical Dictionary).

The word “akathist” is of Greek origin and is translated as “unsaddled.” That is, this is a prayer that is read and listened to while standing. The first akathist was written in honor of the Mother of God in the 6th century. Its author is considered to be Saint Roman the Sweet Singer. Subsequent akathists were compiled following the example of this work. All of them are built according to the same scheme. These are 25 songs, 13 of which are kontakia and 12 are ikos. The first are small beginnings to the ikos, and the second are voluminous songs that develop the theme indicated in the kontakia.

Most of the akathist consists of praises (hairetisms) of the sacred person, contained in ikos (12 in each). All Hayretisms begin with a direct address to the righteous with the word “Rejoice.” In Church Slavonic, it does not mean a call to joy, but a greeting. All kontakia, with the exception of the first, end with the exclamation “Alleluia” (translated from Hebrew as “Praise God”).

When is the akathist to the Kazan Mother of God read?

The Akathist to the Kazan Mother of God is read to praise Her joyfully or to express a plea for help. This can be any good request of a spiritual or everyday nature. Traditionally, before the Kazan Icon, Orthodox Christians ask the Mother of God for healing from illnesses, for a prosperous marriage, for the birth of a child, for the health of children, as well as for consolation in difficult periods of life.

“Like a song imbued with the spirit of cheerfulness and joy, the akathist is attractive to every prayer-minded soul... In each akathist... there are several strong expressions that poured out from the depths of the author’s heart, and they, like a ray of grace, will sink into the depths of the hearts of those praying, especially those thirsting for encouragement and consolation.” (from the book “Orthodox Russian Akathists”)

Let us give an example of the Mother of God’s help through prayer in front of Her Kazan image. An anonymous Christian woman says that in the second month of pregnancy, doctors told her terrible news: the fetus stopped moving and its heartbeat stopped. To avoid the death of the mother, it was necessary to cleanse the uterus as soon as possible.

After the procedure, the depressed girl lay in the ward and talked on the phone with her husband. He said that on that day the discovery of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, revered in their family, was celebrated. The man said that he prayed for his wife at the liturgy and promised to read the holiday akathist.

Before discharge, the woman needed to be examined again. It showed that the fetus was still in the womb. And most importantly, he is alive. Doctors had never encountered anything like this and came to the conclusion that the child had hidden himself in a muscle. The couple immediately realized who had revived and “hid” their child. They firmly decided to give birth to a child, despite doctors’ warnings about his possible disability.

Mother and father believed in a miracle, continuing their fervent prayer to the Virgin Mary. Relatives from Kazan ordered a magpie for them from one of the churches, and also sent the couple the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. After 9 months, the woman safely gave birth to a girl, who turned out to be the healthiest in the entire maternity hospital.

How does the icon of the “Kazan” Mother of God help? What are they praying for? What do they ask of the Mother of God?

This is a strong icon, the image on it promotes recovery from serious illnesses, and the person praying acquires new opportunities.

It is recommended to contact the Mother of God with various problems.

There are no restrictions; you can ask for help in various difficulties:

  • You should pray for healing: for the health of your son, daughter, yourself or other relatives;
  • The Mother of God is asked for marriage, and it is possible to apply on one’s own behalf or pray for a son;
  • about love in the family;
  • about the gift of children;
  • successful childbirth and pregnancy maintenance;
  • about finding or maintaining an existing job;
  • on defense in case of threat of unfair accusation (at trial).

There are cases when those praying asked for the realization of desires that go against their purpose, destiny, chain of events in life and relationships. For example, a woman asks for the return of her beloved. If this can harm her (her soul), for example, with strong attachment (when another person is placed above the Lord), in this case the desire is not realized. When the breakup was part of a test for both (men, women), then the marriage will be saved; the one praying will only speed up this event with a sincere request and repentance for sins.
