Akathist is a very special type of prayer; it is dedicated to Christ, the Mother of God, saints, and some holidays. In churches during divine services, akathists are read very rarely, only several times a year, but pious parishioners, of their own free will, take upon themselves the obligation to read akathists, often precisely in honor of the Mother of God.
About the author About the book
This is explained simply - such is the reverence in Orthodoxy for the Mother of the Lord Jesus Christ that people strive to turn to her. Without fear, they prayerfully bring any of their needs (spiritual, everyday) to the feet of the intercessor of the entire human race. How to correctly read the akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos? We will consider this issue in detail, and at the end of the article you will find the text of the akathist and you can even listen to it online.
What is an akathist
A special poetic work of Byzantine spiritual literature is the Akathist to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Akathists are songs of gratitude and praise (hymns) dedicated not only to the Mother of God, but also to God, the saints, and the Heavenly powers. The hymns of this genre are distinguished by a special joyful mood.
Old Russian Novgorod icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary
“Like a song imbued with the spirit of cheerfulness and joy, the akathist is attractive to every prayer-minded soul. In each akathist... there are several strong expressions that poured out from the depths of the author’s heart, and they, like a blessed ray, will sink into the depths of the hearts of those praying, especially those thirsting for encouragement and consolation” (Professor Alexey Vasilyevich Popov, 1856-1909).
In Greek, “akathist” (“ἀκάθιστος”) means “a hymn that one does not sit down to sing.” Standing during the akathist in Orthodoxy is perceived as a kind of feat (labor) offered to God. It also expresses respect to the recipient of the chants of praise. Initially, the akathist, as a special chant, was dedicated only to the Most Holy Theotokos. However, over time, similar chants began to appear, dedicated to God and the saints.
Gradually, the definition of “akathist” began to be used in relation to an entire genre of Orthodox hymnography. Therefore, the first Akathist of the Mother of God, known as the Akathist “Rejoice, Unbrided Bride,” began to be called the Great. It is he who sounds especially often (usually only in parts) at various Orthodox services.
Which icon to pray in front of
Since akathists are mainly a cell (that is, home) reading, many believers ask the question - in front of which icon should the akathist be read to the Most Holy Theotokos? This is not of fundamental importance. Any image dedicated to the Queen of Heaven will do.
Although the holiday has its own extensive iconography. Icons often depict the Mother of God holding the veil in her outstretched arms. However, there are also more complex compositions. In the bottom row, praying people are depicted, including Blessed Andrew, in the middle - the Mother of God surrounded by saints and angels, at the top of the composition is Christ seated on a throne. In most cases, the cover itself (bedspread) is marked in bright red.
Modern icons are simpler in writing; they depict the Mother of God alone, with a veil in her hands (white). It doesn’t matter what kind of image will be in the house, the main thing is that it helps to focus thoughts on prayer. The prayer of the Mother of God is capable of many things - it heals spiritual wounds, calms passions. She is ready to protect her children, they just need to try to work on themselves, have a strong faith and a kind heart.
About the author About the book
Akathist structure
All akathists are compiled according to the same structure: 12 ikos and 13 kontakia, which alternate with each other. The text of the kontakion reveals the theme of the holiday being celebrated. The kontakion ends with the cry of praise “Hallelujah.” The words of ikos reveal the theme of the kontakion. Ikos is represented by a short introductory part and 12 hayretisms (greetings) “Rejoice”.
According to the Charter of Russian Orthodoxy, the reading of the Akathist to the Mother of God follows on the 5th Saturday of Great Lent (Saturday of the Akathist). Also, the reading of the Akathist can take place at Vespers throughout the year or on special occasions, for example, at a prayer service. In the Orthodox Church, the reading of the akathist can be performed not only conciliarly (together) in church, but also at home.
“Akathists in honor of the Savior, the Mother of God and saints are usually read outside of fasting, during which Christians should strictly pray for the forgiveness of their sins. We most often turn to akathists at times of special joy and gratitude, or when we need to ask the Lord and the Mother of God for help in difficult circumstances” (hieromonk Job Gumerov).
How to read correctly
The text of the prayer to the Mother of God is read or sung in Church Slavonic or Greek. During services in cathedrals, it is usually performed by the right choir: in the form of a spiritual concert or singing kontakion in the 2nd or 8th tone. Everyday, Kiev, Greek and Byzantine chants are often used. In small churches, this duty is performed by the choir; in this case, the prayer is performed in unison or in 2-3 voices; as a rule, the 8th voice is taken as the melodic basis.
During the service, it is better to join in the chants mentally, so as not to disturb the harmonious sound of the choir. If you know the liturgy well, you can receive a blessing and join the choir or readers. You can sing along with the choir or read a prayer over the sound only if this does not violate the traditions of your temple.
Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos: history of origin
Reliable information about the author, place and time of compilation of the first Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos has not been preserved. There are several versions. Most researchers point to the 6th-7th centuries, during the reign between the Byzantine emperors Justinian I (527-565) and Heraclius (610-641).
According to the most common version, the author is considered to be the Venerable Roman the Sweet Singer (died in 556). The great akathist in the 12th hayretism (greeting) of each ikos has a refrain (repeated throughout the entire work) “Rejoice, Unbrided Bride.” These same words are contained in the kontakion of the Feast of the Annunciation (April 7), compiled by the Venerable Roman the Sweet Singer.
However, many researchers are inclined to believe that the akathist to the Mother of God was compiled by the deacon of the Church of Constantinople, George of Pisidia. Tradition says that he wrote a hymn of praise at the inspiration of the Mother of God after the Byzantine victory over the Persians who were besieging Constantinople in 626. Being in a hopeless situation, the residents of the city resorted to the Mother of God in their prayers for help. Miraculously, Constantinople survived. Grateful residents sang the composed akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos all night. This day fell on Saturday of the 5th week of Lent. In memory of this event, the Church established the celebration of the Praise of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
“We give glory to the Most Holy Theotokos, the One who carried a special cross through life, who showed us an example not only of holiness of life, purity of mind and heart, love, but also patience, courage, the ability to worthily and savingly bear the heaviest cross, which alone saves person. The Most Holy Theotokos was raptured into heaven not only because She revealed in Herself the greatest gift of Divine grace, but also because She supported this gift with Her life.
We glorify the Most Pure Queen of Heaven and learn from Her the life-saving bearing of the cross, we glorify Her as the intercessor of the human race, Who, having walked the sorrowful paths of Her earthly existence, now stands before Her Son and our Lord in glory and, we believe, prays for us, strengthening each one in his own bearing the cross, strengthening everyone on the path to salvation in the implementation and proclamation of God’s truth” (Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus').
Liturgical chant
This ancient liturgical chant, dedicated to the Most Pure Mother of God, was for a long time the only one of its kind. The akathists that exist today were written as an imitation of this, the first, the main one, called the Great from ancient times.
Why is the Akathist called the “Victory Mounted Voivode”
?
These are the first words of the chant. The verse, according to church historians, is significantly different in rhythmic pattern from other parts of the hymn, therefore it is recognized as a later addition to the text, connecting it with the special circumstances under which the Great Akathist came into church use.
Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos as a literary and poetic masterpiece
The content of the Akathist to the Mother of God is divided into narrative (about the earthly life of the Virgin Mary) and dogmatic (about the mystery of the Incarnation and the salvation of people) parts. The akathist is filled with repeated repetitions of the word “Rejoice.” With such an exclamation, the Archangel Gabriel greeted the Virgin Mary, who had come to announce to Her that the Savior was to be born from Her:
“Rejoice, O Blessed One! The Lord is with You; Blessed are You among women" (Gospel of Luke, 1:28).
As a special genre of Byzantine literature, Akathist has an exceptional structure of its kind. Ikos are decorated with the same rhythmic pattern. Hayretisms form six pairs, where each line has a rhymed reflection in the other line. It should be noted that in most cases the rhyme was lost in translation from Greek.
Also, the Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos is full of literary and poetic turns. Such as antitheses, that is, rhetorical oppositions. For example, “Rejoice, prolix miracle of the angels; Rejoice, much-lamentable defeat of demons.” Or parallel figures of speech (“Rejoice, honorable crown of pious kings; Rejoice, honorable praise of reverent priests”). Synonyms are common (“Rejoice, light-fruitful tree, from which the vernias feed; Rejoice, blessed-leaved tree, with which many are covered”).
In the Greek version, the Akathist is permeated with phonetic play on words, which cannot be adequately conveyed in translation. For example, consider the first pair of hairetisms in the first icos. In Slavic the text reads: “Rejoice, whose joy will shine forth; Rejoice, Her oath will disappear.” Russian transcription of the Greek version: “Khaire, di hes he hara eclampsei; Khaire, di he he ara ekleipsey.”
In the original, the Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos is an alphabetical acrostic: the first words of the kontakia and ikos begin with the letters of the Greek alphabet, from “Alpha” (“Representative Angel…”) to “Omega” (“O all-sung Mother…”). For the Slavic translation, this can only be traced in the first ikos and the thirteenth kontakion.
“The Tsarina” is a helper to everyone
The original of the famous image “The Queen of All” was painted on Mount Athos in the 17th century, where it remains to this day, in the Vatopedi monastery. The Most Pure Virgin is depicted on the throne, with the Child of God in her arms. He blesses with his right hand and holds a scroll in his left. Two angels overshadow the figures with their wings.
There is a legend associated with the image. One day, a certain young man who practiced magic came to the temple to test his spell on the icon. Suddenly the face of the Mother of God shone, the wicked young man was thrown back with force, and he fell backward. God forbids the use of any magic, as stated in the Bible, as has been shown. The young man immediately repented and gave up fortune telling.
Modern people are also ready to turn to different sorcerers to achieve their goals. They should think carefully before venturing down this dangerous path. It is better to read the akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos, the All-Tsarina, this will help you return to the true path of knowledge of God. This icon is credited with the power to heal cancer.
Veneration of the Mother of God in Orthodoxy
The Mother of God is revered by Christians above all saints. This is connected with the Christian dogma of the Incarnation, according to which the Son of God acquired human flesh (Gospel of John, 1:14). The Virgin Mary agreed to contribute to God’s Plan for the salvation of all people: “Behold, the Servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word” (Gospel of Luke 1:38).
“If not for Her humility, not for Her purity, not for Her devoted and sacrificial service to God to the point of self-forgetfulness, the Lord would not have been able to accept human nature, darkened by sin, or even to approach it. In Her womb the flesh of the New Adam was woven - Christ, not subject to the tyranny of sin, and the Blessed Virgin became the first person to receive renewal and sanctification from the Body and Blood of the Savior, from His Divine nature.
This New Eve became the prototype of the Holy Church, giving birth to us for spiritual life, and our real Mother, because she gave us Life - Christ, in whom we find salvation and eternal life. She is our ideal and our Spiritual Guide in ascent to Heaven, because she was the first to achieve perfection, the state of deification, and by her own example teaches Her children the virtues of love, humility, obedience and purity” (Hegumen Leonty Kozlov).
When was this text written?
The exact date of creation of this anthem is unknown. The siege of Constantinople in the 7th century can be considered a certain starting point.
7
Augusta
626
The Avars with their allies the Persians and other tribes (including the Slavs), after a long assault, were forced to stop hostilities and then hastily leave Byzantium.
This happened after the miraculous icon of the Mother of God was carried along the walls of the city, with the singing of this hymn. Thus, it turns out that the chant was created at least several decades earlier. But it is more or less precisely known that his first kontakion, “The Chosen Voivode,” appeared precisely in 626, supplementing the previously existing text.
Who is the author of Akathist
The medieval Christian, who created inspired texts or beautiful icons, did not dare to consider himself an “author,” understanding Who inspired the words, thoughts, Who moves the hand of the hymnographer. That is why it is now so difficult to determine who wrote this or that chant.
For a long time, the author of this hymn to the Mother of God was not identified. Among the possible creators of the anthem were:
- St. Appolinaria from Laodicea (IV century)
- St. Roman Sladkopevets, clergyman of the Blachernae Church;
- Patr. Sergius of Constantinople, under whom the siege of 626 took place.
Yet by now most liturgists believe:
- Akathist appeared from the end of the 6th – beginning of the 7th centuries;
- Most likely, it was written by St. Roman the Sweet Singer, so called because he had the special blessing of the Mother of God to glorify Her and the Lord with hymns.
What does an akathist consist of?
The hymn to the Mother of God consists of 24 kontakia and ikos, according to the number of letters of the Greek alphabet. The original Greek text is structured so that each chant begins with a specific Greek letter in alphabetical order. The 13th kontakion is the final, most solemn one.
The names of the chants themselves are also Greek. In ancient times, a large scroll was called “Kondakion”. Many authors therefore say that before the 10th century. Kontakion as a chant was quite a large work. Kontakia as short doxologies dedicated to the celebration of a day or saint appeared after the 9th-10th centuries. The kontakion is followed by ikos, a longer hymn.
The kontakion ends with the ancient prayer cry “Hallelujah.” The peculiarity of ikos is the so-called “hairetisms” (from the Greek “haire”, or “rejoice”).
Brief explanation of the main themes
Ikos and kontakion are usually combined:
- a single rhythm of verse;
- dedicated to the same event.
A definite exception is the Great Akathist, where the first kontakion glorifies the Most Pure One as the “Climbed Governor.” Its main topics are:
- Annunciation;
- Nativity of Christ, glorification of the Most Pure One as the One who gave birth to Christ.
Interesting fact
Many modern authors believe that originally St. The Roman Sweet Singer intended his hymn either for the feast of the Annunciation or for Christmas.
It is not for nothing that the words “Rejoice, Unbrided Bride” are repeated in every ikos, that is, the Bride who remained a Virgin - and yet gave birth to the Lord.
Gratitude to the Deliverer (kontakion 1)
It is believed that this was the first chant added after the siege of Constantinople in 626. It is dedicated to the help of the Most Pure One, glorifying Her as the deliverer of Christians. At the same time, it contains hope for the help of the Mother of God all the days of our lives. Kontakion is often sung during divine services, for example, it often ends the all-night vigil after the reading of the First Hour.
Annunciation and anticipation of Christmas (from 1 Ikos to 4 Kontakion)
Here are the events of the Gospel to which these hymns are dedicated:
- Annunciation, when “The Representative Angel was sent to quickly say to the Mother of God: Rejoice!..”; the chants glorify the Most Pure One with the words of the Archangel, who was “horrified” at the sight of Her purity, humility, and holiness.
- Meeting of the Virgin Mary from right. Elizabeth, who was also expecting her Firstborn, St. John Preddechu; if St. Luke only says that Preddecha “jumped” for joy in the womb of Elizabeth, then the author puts it into the mouth of the saint. John’s whole hymn (3 ikos): “Rejoice, branches of the unfading rod; Rejoice, immortal fruit acquisition... Rejoice, God's favor towards mortals; Rejoice, mortals have boldness towards God..."
- Very little space is devoted to the embarrassment of rights. Joseph (4 Kontakion), who, at first doubting as a man whether someone had corrupted the virginity of Mary, being enlightened by the Holy Spirit, saw the truth, inexpressible in human language, not understood by the mind. And therefore, the creator of the chant, as if on behalf of Joseph, pronounces only “Hallelujah!”, the ancient one. glorifying God for everything.
Nativity of Christ and Presentation (from 4 Ikos to 7 Kontakion )
This part poetically describes:
- the shepherds' worship of the Born Christ; this contains the understanding of the Born as the Shepherd of the verbal sheep, and the Mother of God as the “heavenly doors of opening”, which the shepherds saw with their own eyes when the Angelic Host appeared to them;
- greeting to the Lord of the Magi, whom the star leads to the place of His Incarnation;
- 6 Kontakion and Ikos also tell about the flight of the Holy Family to Egypt, its providential significance; the words of the song are based on the legend about the fall of idols in this then pagan country, when the Mother of God and Christ with the righteous Joseph entered its borders;
- from the 7th kontakion, the hymnist comprehends the Presentation of the Lord, again paying the main attention to the Mother of God, although the elder Simeon, who accepted Christ into his arms, is mentioned here; Mary is seen by the hymn writer as “the Judge of the righteous supplication... forgiveness of many sins... love, conquering every desire.”
Theology of the Nativity (8th and 9th kontakia and ikos)
Seeing the Incarnate God, believers are called to “get away from the vanity of the world” and “place their minds on the Divine.” The 8th kontakion with ikos is dedicated to the theological explanation of the Birth of the Savior - His “Divine Descent”, when “all the indescribable Word in the lower and the highest departed,” that is, having become Man, Christ remained God. Therefore, how great is His Mother, who became the receptacle of the “incontainable God”! From the depths of a heart shocked by this mystery, words of praise, thanksgiving and love burst forth.
9 ikos is evidence that the miracle of the Incarnation leads to the silence of the “multi-prophecies” who are trying to understand what happened with their human mind. The Mother of God, by Her very existence and life, is “tearing apart the Athenian weaves” (Athens is the center of pagan learning), silencing the “cunning”, “enlightening many in the mind.”
Protection of the faithful (10-12 kontakia and ikos)
This part of the hymn glorifies the intercession of the Mother of God for the human race:
- The hymn praises the Most Pure One as the guardian of virginity, the helper of the chaste, the intercessor who helps to walk this path;
- The Most Pure One is also called salvation for all sinners - “the bath that washes the conscience”, “the cup that draws joy”;
- finally, She is a helper to all the faithful, without distinction of age, rank - priests, simply pious people; The Mother of God is protection from enemies, external and internal, the conqueror of sins, unclean thoughts, and illnesses.
The culmination of the doxology is the last, 13th kontakion, which is traditionally repeated three times: “Oh, All-Sung Mother, who gave birth to all the saints, the Most Holy Word! Having accepted this present offering, deliver everyone from all misfortune, and from future torment, those who cry out to You: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.”
Akathist to the Blessed Virgin Mary: meaning
In gratitude for the participation of the Ever-Virgin in the mystery of the Incarnation, the Church joyfully sings joyful hymns to Her. The Great Akathist is filled with songs of praise addressed to the Mother of God. However, the entire text recalls the mystery of human salvation, which is achieved by Christ.
Akathist to the Mother of God is a special type of prayer that can be read both in joyful moments of life and during times of spiritual need for the help and intercession of the Mother of God.
“We have there, in heaven, a kind and merciful Mother. Do not think that if the Mother of the Lord moved into heaven today, then She has left the world. No! Having once passed there, She has great power and helps us with greater power. She is now closer to the Throne of the Divine, She has gone there to always look after the needs of the poor, the prayers of widows, the poor, the prisoners, the persecuted, the suffering, the sick.
There She became the Mother, helping everyone in trouble, everyone who is oppressed and everyone who loves Her and calls for help with all their hearts. We have in heaven a most blessed Mother, a Mother of mercy and mercy, Who always prays for the entire Church of Christ and each child of the Church of Christ individually.
Blessed and thrice blessed are the Christians who keep the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos in their home and every day read the akathist, prayer service and other prayers of the Mother of God. There is no stronger Person in heaven or on earth, after the Holy Trinity, than the Mother of God, who can help us” (Archimandrite Cleopas Ilie, 1912-1998).
Pokrov - favorite autumn holiday
Although not the twelfth, the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in Russia is celebrated as great, it is one of the most beloved. This can be explained by the great veneration of the Mother of God, to whom not many official church dates are dedicated.
In the middle of the 10th century. In Byzantium, during the service, the Mother of God miraculously appeared. In the temple, the holy fool Andrei prayed with many people, and then the services continued all night. Raising his head, he saw the Mother of God, who was also praying, kneeling down. The Queen of Heaven was surrounded by saints.

Then she took the veil from her head and covered the praying people with it. By this she protected them from visible and invisible enemies. It has been celebrated in Rus' since the 12th century. Weddings traditionally began with Intercession (October 14), girls prayed for a successful marriage. The Akathist to the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos can be read any day. There is an unspoken ban on akathists only during Lent.
You can ask the Mother of God for anything: being the mother of the Lord, she adopted the whole world. You just need to remember that prayer should not be to the detriment of anyone, do not ask for mercy for yourself, and grief for enemies, this causes suffering to the heavenly intercessor. She constantly looks from heaven at the children of God, and every word that hurts her neighbor greatly hurts her to the very heart.

Rejoice, Unbride-less Bride.

A representative angel from Heaven was sent quickly saying to the Mother of God: Rejoice, and with a disembodied voice you were incarnated in vain, Lord, terrified and standing, calling to Her like this:
Rejoice, her joy will shine forth; Rejoice, the oath will disappear.
Rejoice, proclamation to fallen Adam; Rejoice, the tears of Eve are deliverance.
Rejoice, height unattainable by human thoughts; Rejoice, depth unfathomable and with angelic eyes.

Prayer What should I pray to You for, what should I ask of You? You see everything, you know it yourself, look into my soul and give it what it needs. You, who have endured everything, overcome everything, will understand everything. You, who entwined the Baby in a manger and took Him with Your hands from the Cross, You alone know all the heights of joy, all the oppression of grief. You, who have received the entire human race as adoption, look at me with maternal care. From the snares of sin, lead me to Your Son. I see a tear watering Your face. It’s over me You shed it and let it wash away the traces of my sins. Here I have come, I am standing, I am waiting for Your response, O Mother of God, O All-Sung, O Lady! I don’t ask for anything, I just stand before You. Only my heart, poor human heart, exhausted in longing for truth, I throw at Your Most Pure feet, Lady! Grant to all who call You to reach the eternal day by You and worship You face to face. Amen
