Orthodox saints patronizing and protecting military personnel of various branches of the military.
The following saints patronize and protect the military:
Saint George the Victorious, Christian saint, great martyr.
He suffered for his faith under Emperor Diocletian. For eight days they mocked him - they pushed him with stakes, wheeled him around, threw him into quicklime, broke his arms and legs, put on hot boots and forced him to run in them, beat him with whips, forced him to drink two cups of a poisonous drug. But thanks to unceasing prayers and the intercession of the Lord, he remained alive. Moreover, after the second thicket he revived the fallen ox and resurrected the dead man. This contributed to the adoption of Christianity by many residents. On the eighth day, Emperor Dioclinus went down to prison, trying to persuade George to accept the pagan faith. Then the great martyr asked to be taken to the temple to Apollo. He, turning to the sculpture, asked, making the cross over himself and the statue, whether he could accept the slaughter sacrifice from him as God. Then the demon who lived in her admitted that he was a fallen angel, and all the statues in the temple crumbled. Before his execution, the Savior appeared to the saint, saying that paradise awaited him. George ordered the servant to write down these words and take his body to Palestine. There are many legends and poems about the exploits of St. George the Victorious, including about the snake that he pierced with a spear while saving a girl. He is commemorated in the Orthodox Church on May 6, in the Catholic Church on April 23.
Ilya Muromets
Russian people honor the memory of the hero. The Monk Ilya Muromets of Pechersk from the village of Karachalovo near Murom, born in 1143 into a peasant family, is identified with the epic hero. Until the age of 30 he was paralyzed. He was healed by three elders (poor wanderers), who predicted his immortality in battle. Having asked for a parental blessing, he went to “Kievgrad” to pray to the miracle workers and enter the service of Prince Vladimir, to stand up for the Christian faith. Since then his exploits began. Reverend Ilya Muromets is numbered among the Cathedral of Murom Saints.

Apostle Andrew the First-Called
Peter's brother, both were fishermen on the Lake of Galilee in Bethsaida. Andrew was first a disciple of John the Baptist. After baptism in the Jordan, Jesus called him to be a disciple, he became the first apostle, hence the name first-called. Then he led his brother and two others to Christ. After the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles, he went around preaching the Word of God in various countries. While in Kyiv, he predicted a great future for this city and the numerous churches in it. Then he went up the Dnieper to Novgorod, then through the lands of the Varangians he reached Rome; in a small Byzantine village (future Constantinople) he founded a church. On his journey, he was subjected to various torments from the pagans. Through prayers to God, he performed many miracles of healing and converting people to Christianity. For the conversion of the majority of the city of Patras to Christianity, the ruler of the city Aegeat ordered him to be crucified on the cross, but for a longer torment he was not nailed, but tied to the cross. The saint read sermons for two days, then Egeat ordered the execution to be stopped, fearing the indignation of a huge crowd. The Apostle in his prayer asked God to honor him with death on the cross. The soldiers tried to remove the preacher from the cross. But they didn't succeed. Finally, after the words of the saint, asking the Lord to accept his spirit, a radiance appeared, illuminating the cross and the martyr. After the disappearance of the radiance, Andrei’s soul went to God. Under Emperor Constantine the Great, the relics of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called were placed in the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople next to the relics of the Holy Evangelist Luke, a disciple of the Apostle Paul - Apostle Timothy.

Great Martyr George the Victorious: patron saint of the Armed Forces and ground forces
George was born into a wealthy and pious family in Beirut. He entered military service, standing out among other warriors with his brilliant mind, courage and strength. Pretty soon he rose to the top and became the favorite of Emperor Diocletian himself. The ruler remained in history as one of the most cruel persecutors of the Christian faith: he wanted to revive paganism in Rome.
George was imbued with compassion for the persecuted and exterminated Christians, knowing full well that torment and suffering awaited him too. He distributed all his property, gave free rein to his slaves, and directly communicated his faith in Christ to the emperor, and even accused him of injustice and cruelty. Diocletian tried to persuade George to renounce the Lord, but, seeing his resistance, he ordered his former favorite to be tortured. George bravely endured suffering, continuing to glorify the name of God. As a result, the saint's head was cut off in 303.
The iconographic image of St. George is a warrior sitting on a white horse and slaying a snake with a spear. This plot did not arise by chance: it refers to the posthumous miracles of the great martyr. Legend has it that in a lake near Beirut there lived a snake that ate the locals. Perhaps it was a boa constrictor or a crocodile. One day, the daughter of the city ruler was sacrificed to a monster. Suddenly a young man appeared, enveloped in light, who pierced the terrible serpent with a spear - and the girl was saved. With his miraculous appearance on horseback, Saint George converted many pagans to Christianity.
A broader interpretation of the image of St. George the Victorious on horseback is the victory over Satan, the “Ancient Serpent” (Rev. 12:3). It is this image that can be seen on the ancient coat of arms of the capital of Russia.

Prophet Elijah
Prophet Elijah, the anointed one of God, lived his earthly life 900 years before the appearance of the word of God. According to church tradition, the parent of the future prophet had a vision in which the holy fathers welcomed a newborn child - “They swaddled with fire and nourished with flame.” From childhood, the boy was instilled with Love for the Lord, he often prayed and revered the Almighty, and it could not have been otherwise, because the name Elijah means the fortress of the Lord. During the reign of the ardent idolater King Yahweh in Israel, the people of the Promised Land turned away from the faith of their ancestors and turned to paganism. Lawlessness and the decline of morality reigned in Israel, just at this time, with the blessing of the Lord, Elijah became a prophet, he called on the Israelis to come to their senses and repent, turning to the true faith. Elijah predicted to the people that for disobedience to the word of the Lord, a terrible drought would come that would last for three years, and only the prayer of the pious prophet Elijah could call for rain. But the people of Israel did not hear the calls of the prophet, and a drought began, which the True God could have stopped, but he did not do this, since he would have violated the word of his prophet. Elijah himself, at this time, at the direction of the Lord, prayed and helped everyone in need. He brought the dead son of a poor widow back to life; through his sincere prayers, food and drink appeared in the house, which did not run out until the end of drought and famine.
Exactly three years later, the Lord sent the prophet Elijah to the kingdom of Israel so that he would fulfill his word given to the lost three years ago. Elijah gathered all the Israelites on Mount Carmel and ordered to build two altars, one pagan, the other to the True God. According to the prophet, on which altar the fire falls from heaven, that God should be worshiped, for he is the real one. The pagans called on their idol for 24 hours, but there was no fire, and only after Elijah began to pray to the True God, fire came down from heaven, scorching the wood and water in the recess around the altar. Thus, the people of Israel were converted to the Christian faith, except for the wife of the king of that time, Ahab, who planned to kill the prophet. But she failed to do what she had planned, because the Lord saved his anointed one, sending him to Mount Horeb to be dedicated to the prophetic ministry - Elisha. The prophet Elijah fulfilled the will of God, the prophet Elisha received the gift of prophecy stronger than that of Elijah. After this, the Lord took the living prophet Elijah to heaven in a chariot of fire.
Prophet Elijah is the patron of the Russian airborne troops. The Orthodox Church commemorates Prophet Elijah every year on August 2.
Duty to the Motherland
Children grow up so quickly, and now the son receives a summons from the military registration and enlistment office. Very young and having not yet flown away from his parents’ nest for so long, he, like a chick, experiences fear and confusion.
It is unknown what his service will be, but his mother has the opportunity to keep him with her prayers. After all, people say that a mother’s prayer saves a child even from the bottom of the sea. Here are the saints and what words are best to turn to in order to receive reliable protection for your conscript son.
Rocketeers and artillerymen.
The only daughter of noble parents. After the death of his wife, her father, protecting her from prying eyes and from communication with Christians, built a castle from which she could not leave without her father’s permission. Observing the beauty of the world from the heights of the castle, Varvara came to the conclusion that this could not have been created by the gods, made by human hands. She independently realized that the world was created by a single God, not made by hands. Later, meeting with friends with her father’s permission, she received confirmation of her arguments. She asked a priest who had come from Alexandria to perform the Sacrament of Baptism on her. The father, having learned about his daughter’s conversion to Christianity, gave her to the city ruler for torture. And when, strengthened by the Savior, she withstood all the torture and did not renounce her faith, he cut off her head with his own hand. A few minutes later he was struck by lightning, which was the basis for recognizing Varvara as the patroness of artillery, rocketry and the fire service. According to Catholics, Varvara has the gift of saving from violent death and from storms at sea.
Patron of all warriors Archangel Michael
The Holy Scriptures say that there is a spiritual world that is inhabited by good and intelligent beings - they are called angels. Translated from Greek, the word “angel” means “messenger”. It is through angels that God can communicate his will to people. The prefix “archi” means a higher position in the angelic hierarchy.
The name Michael literally means “Who is like God, or like God.” Satan was once also an Angel of Light, but he wanted to go against the Creator, and then Archangel Michael led the Heavenly army into a great battle:
“...and there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought against them, but they could not stand, and there was no longer a place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that ancient serpent, called the devil and Satan” (Rev. 12:7-9).
Archangel Michael helped our Fatherland with his intercession in 1239, then Novgorod the Great was attacked by the troops of Batu Khan. On many military banners and banners, Michael was depicted as the patron saint of the Russian army.

Prophet of God Elijah
The most revered saint from the Old Testament called on the king and the Israelites to believe in God in order to be saved from the drought, but they did not believe him. Then the prophet built an altar on which fire fell from heaven, and this made the people believe.
On the day of remembrance of the Prophet Elijah - August 2, 1930 - the first landing took place during military exercises, and the leadership of our country signed a decree on the creation of the Airborne Forces. Therefore, the saint is considered the patron saint of paratroopers, and Airborne Forces Day Fr.
How to pray for your son correctly
Thanks to military service, the young man matures and becomes courageous. Therefore, a mother who truly loves her son must hold back her tears so as not to provoke the materialization of inappropriate grief into reality.
But diligently seeking help from the Creator is the best way to take care of your son. Here are some rules:
- Decorating the house with a beautiful iconostasis with holy images of warrior defenders.
- Attending church services and writing notes about the health of the military personnel.
- Lighting a candle in front of the holy faces, accompanied by reading protective prayers.
- Every evening appeal to the Lord about the health and well-being of my son.
Before starting any appeal to the Lord, priests recommend reading “Our Father” and the 90th Psalm. May the Lord protect us!
