Today it is fashionable to be baptized and to have all the corresponding baptismal items with you. But before such an important event as a christening, you should think about whether to pay tribute to fashion or consciously choose this path. This article will talk about the importance of baptism in a person’s life, how the baptism ceremony of a child and an adult takes place, and what rules must be followed for everything to be successful.
Signs
All dreams on Epiphany night will be prophetic, and predictions on this holiday will be the most reliable. Prayers and conspiracies have the greatest power. The water brought from the church can be stored for a whole year and used for rituals and spiritual cleansing.
Many believe that the engagement on January 19 was sanctified by Jesus Christ himself. Such marriages are usually the happiest and strongest. Those who receive ritual baptism on this holiday will experience more than just cleansing. They say that such people will live a happy and easy life. If, on the day of the celebration, a lady of respectable age counts the tablecloths in her own home, the family will have many guests in the next year.
Any rite and ritual at the Epiphany of the Lord has special power. It is worth remembering several restrictions for January 19, compliance with which will prevent troubles and misfortunes. On this day, it is not recommended to take it out of the house and give it to someone:
- bread;
- even a small amount of money;
- salt;
- matches.
Believers advise trying to tune in to being filled with vital energy and avoiding depression. If you cry on this day, they say that such a person will shed tears all year. You must try not to spill holy water, which has special magic. They say that if a container with Epiphany water jumps out of your hands, that person’s life will be short.
Why is this being done?
The sacrament of baptism washes away all sins from a person, including the original sin (the one that Adam and Eve committed - it is reflected on each of their descendants, that is, in fact, on all people). In other words, this is the spiritual birth of any Christian.

In terms of its importance for a person’s spiritual life, baptism is one of the seven most important Christian sacraments:
- baptism;
- Confirmation (goes with baptism);
- confession (repentance);
- communion (Eucharist);
- wedding;
- priesthood (ordination to the ranks of deacons, elders or priests, as well as bishops or bishops);
- unction or blessing of oil (usually performed at the bedside of a sick person).
Rituals that help attract good luck and money
There are many ceremonies and rituals for Epiphany on January 19th. Many people hope to become luckier on this day. Such luck manifests itself in all areas of life, which is why businessmen and gamblers often turn to rituals on Epiphany Day.
There are rituals for both attracting money and good luck. To become more successful in matters of any nature, you need to wash your face with holy water on a holiday and turn to God. The words should be read three times:
Rituals for money are carried out on Epiphany from January 18 to 19 (at night). The whole family needs to count the bills in their hands. During the counting, a prayer is said:
You can also use a conspiracy for a rich life. It will save the amount of money coming into the family and increase the amount of income. To cast a spell, you will need to ask for holy water in any temple. In the house, you should sprinkle all the corners in each room and say:
The remaining water used must be placed in a certain place overnight. They choose the area that seems more important to the family. The ritual begins to work immediately after its implementation, but sometimes you can feel the desired effect only after several months.
The rite of baptism of a child in Orthodoxy, rules
A person can be baptized at any age. But the church charter recommends doing this in infancy, since this rite removes original sin from the child. Jesus Christ had a very special relationship with children. He said:
“Let them come to me, do not forbid the children to come to me, for there is a Kingdom of God.”
Therefore, the sooner a child is baptized, the faster he will accept God's grace.
It is best to baptize a child on the fortieth day after birth. It is believed that for 40 days after giving birth, a woman is still in an unclean state and is prohibited from entering the church. After these days have expired, the priest reads the prayer of entering the church over the mother, and she can calmly attend the baptism ceremony of her baby.
There are certain age limits that determine how the baptism ceremony will take place:
- if the child is under 7 years old, responsibility for the ritual falls on his parents, they are the ones who decide the need for such an action;
- if the child is 7 years old, in addition to the consent of the parents, the child is also asked. If he does not agree, the ceremony is canceled;
- If a child is already 14 years old, he has the right to decide whether to be baptized or not, so parental consent is not necessary.
The best age for baptism is 3-6 months. The baby still does not quite distinguish between “friends” and “strangers”; the mother can be present at the ceremony and the baptism can be tolerated calmly and easily. Sometimes the sacrament of baptism occurs in the first days of a baby’s life due to the child’s serious illness. Often the priest comes to the maternity hospital itself.
For the rite of infant baptism, certain things are necessary:
- christening shirt. It is customary to have new clothes for baptism; the godmother buys them. A girl must have a hat;
- kryzhma. A white towel or blanket can be used as a kryzhma. It is needed to wrap the baby after bathing. Kryzhma is acquired by the future godfather;
- pectoral cross. This attribute of baptism can be purchased directly in the church, or you can bring it with you, having previously consecrated it;
- icon of the saint. We need an icon of the saint in whose honor the child is named. If this is not the case, you can purchase an icon of the Guardian Angel.

You need to take a particularly responsible approach to choosing godparents. Things to keep in mind:
- godparents will be responsible for the spiritual education of the child;
- the godmother and father must take an active part in the life of the godson or goddaughter;
- godparents are obliged to take care of the child if his biological parents die;
- godmothers must be baptized themselves.
For a person over 18 years of age, godparents are not needed.
How to get rid of all problems and make your wishes come true
Everyone has bad times in their life. In this case, the family should turn to this powerful ritual. First you need to collect Epiphany water and place it on the doorstep. This container does not need to be closed. When morning comes, the shoes of all family members living in the house are wiped with water. Whatever remains should be disposed of in the toilet. At this moment you need to whisper: “Get evil to the ground, the Holy Spirit to the ground.”
There is a custom on a festive night to turn to God and ask for a wish to be fulfilled. At Epiphany, the heavens are open and the Lord is able to hear all requests. Within a year, such a dream should come true.
Another ritual, which is performed only at night, is associated with the festive Epiphany water. On the eve of the holiday (in the evening), you need to place the bowl or other container you are using and say over the water: “At night, the water will sway on its own.” In this case, the vibrations of the water will confirm that higher powers have heard the requester.
To complete the ritual, you need to wait until twelve o'clock at night. At this moment, without outside intervention, the water should begin to move. After this, you need to look out the window and, looking at the sky, turn to God. After some time, the cherished dream should come true.
Sacrament of Baptism
Method of baptism in the ancient Church
described in
the Teaching of the Twelve Apostles (Didache)
(I - early II century): “Baptize in living (that is, running) water in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. If there is no living water, baptize in other water; If you can’t do it cold, then warm it. And if there is neither one nor the other, then place it on your head three times.”
Baptism in Apostolic Times
preceded by teaching the basics of the Orthodox faith and repentance of the baptized person for his sins.
At that time there was no definite sequence for performing the Sacrament.
From the New Testament there are several cases
of baptism
of various persons by the apostles, and in the first two cases below, on the direct instructions of Christ.
This is the Baptism
of the eunuch Queen Candace by the Apostle Philip in the river (See: Acts 8; 38).
And also the Baptism
of the centurion Cornelius and his entire family by the Apostle Peter (See: Acts 10; 47, 48) and
the Baptism
performed by the Apostle Paul over the prison guard, who converted after seeing the miraculous liberation of the captives from their bonds (See: Acts 16; 33).
In the last two cases, the apostles baptized entire families, including children. The nature of Baptism
in apostolic times was exceptional and could not remain so further, due to the fact that Christianity began to actively spread.
Apostolic men (1st – early 2nd centuries) baptized
resorting to them already according to a certain, albeit very simple scheme.
Baptismal
sequence consisted of the following elements.
1
.
Catechumen
(teaching the truths of faith).
2
.
Repentance
of the baptized person and renunciation of committed sins.
3
.
Verbal confession of faith
in Christ.
4
.
Three times immersion in water
in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
The announcement usually lasted two or three years, during which a person wishing to receive Baptism
, the most important part of Christian teaching was revealed.
Before Easter, the catechumens entered their names into the list of those being baptized. On Holy Saturday, the local bishop performed the solemn Baptism
of all catechumens. This usually happened in natural reservoirs, rivers and streams.
At the end of the 2nd and 3rd centuries
preparation for
Baptism
takes on an even more definite character.
Anyone preparing to begin the Sacrament of Baptism
had to come to the bishop and confess to him his desire to become a member of the Church.
The bishop collected information about the moral qualities of his soul, behavior in family and social life and entered his name in the church “katastikh”
(book). This book contained a list of catechumens and community members.
The catechumens could attend the service, but during the Liturgy, after reading the Gospel and the sermon, they had to leave the church. Those wishing to receive Christian Baptism
spent time in fasting and prayer and attended divine services daily, repenting of their sins.
Baptism
took place on Holy Saturday.
The modern Easter service contains an element that has been preserved from those times: our night procession of the cross was in those days a procession around the temple of the newly baptized, dressed in white robes and holding burning candles. The following of the Sacrament
in the period described already included a mention of the combination to Christ (which later became part of
the Sacrament
) and the reading of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed.
Starting from the end of the 2nd century, bishops dedicated so-called exorcists to special service in the Church.
Those dedicated to this service read incantatory prayers, in which in the name of God unclean spirits were forbidden to approach the newly baptized.
After incantatory prayers, the person receiving Baptism
renounced Satan and testified to his conscious union with Christ.
Unlike the modern rite, where denial of Satan is performed three times, during this period it was repeated fifteen times. The practice of consecrating water for performing the Sacrament of Baptism
in the Greek Church has also been mentioned since the 2nd-3rd centuries.
In the 4th-5th centuries
those approaching
Baptism
confessed their faith “in precise and definite words, according to the established form, loudly, publicly, from an elevated place, in the presence of believers.”
St. Augustine testifies that such a custom existed in his time in Rome. At the same time, the custom of baptizing mainly adults was established for the purpose of their conscious acceptance of the Sacrament.
But at the same time, the 124th rule of the Council of Carthage (419) anathematizes5 those who reject the need for
Baptism
, in which the latter are freed from original sin.
Since the time of Constantine the Great, the Sacrament of Baptism
moved from natural reservoirs to
baptisteries
(specially arranged pools at churches).
Immediately after immersion, the presbyter anointed the forehead of the person being baptized with oil and clothed him in white robes - a symbol of the purity and righteousness he received in the Sacrament.
A pectoral cross was put on the baptized person.
However, these actions were carried out starting from the end of the 2nd century. After Baptism
, the newly enlightened one received Holy Communion. The seriously ill and those in prison were baptized through pouring or sprinkling.
Baptism in Rus'.
The Russian Church accepted the rite of performing
the Sacrament of Baptism
from the Byzantine Church in the form in which it existed by the end of the 10th century.
And in our country this Sacrament,
as in ancient centuries, underwent some changes in its structure, but they were of a local nature. It is worth mentioning only some of the most significant of them.
In the very first centuries
During the existence of the Russian Church, a custom appeared that was adopted by southwestern Russia from its Catholic neighbors.
It consisted in performing the Sacrament of Baptism
through pouring, and not through immersion. But this deviation from the established practice of the Ecumenical Orthodox Church met with serious resistance from both the clergy and the church people. At the Vladimir Council (1274) it was forbidden to baptize by dousing.
In the 15th century
In Rus', the custom of having two godparents (“godparents”) arose, which was actively denounced by Metropolitan Photius6. According to ancient regulations, there had to be one recipient: a man for a boy and a woman for a girl. Nevertheless, this tradition took hold and became almost ubiquitous in Rus'.
In the 17th century
, after the reform carried out by Patriarch Nikon (which affected
Baptism
only indirectly), the rite
of the Sacrament
has undergone virtually no changes and remains in the form in which it was formed by the middle of the 17th century.
Ritual with a coin
Christian traditions are very strong. Therefore, each ritual promotes filling with vital energy, powerful cleansing, strengthening health and fulfillment of desires. To make your dream come true, a ritual with a coin is used:
- Before Epiphany, you need to collect holy water from last year.
- A silver coin is also placed in the container (if there are no silver coins, silver ones made of any metal will do, but the power of the ritual may be less).
- You need to write your innermost desire on a piece of paper and fold it.
- The note is placed under the container. The vessel is placed on the window so that it is sure to receive light from the Moon.
- Over the water you need to say what was written on the piece of paper three times.
After pronouncing the spell, you need to go to bed. In the morning, the contents of the glass should be poured under a tree, and the coin should be hidden in a secret place. Over the next year, your cherished wish should come true.
Baptism cross for a child
The cross is a key attribute of the ritual.
The meaning of the cross is that it will be required when performing the Sacrament. It doesn’t matter where they buy it - in a church shop or a regular store. It can be in any design: gold, silver or wood. The main thing is that he is Orthodox, not Catholic. The difference is easy to understand: in Catholicism, Christ’s legs are brought together and nailed. You also need to purchase a chain or cord. The latter option is preferable for babies, as it will not rub delicate skin.
Important! Before the baptismal ceremony, the cross must be consecrated. The priest does this.
Rituals to improve mental and physical health
Various baptismal customs favor purification. This has a positive effect on both physical and psychological state. But changes are not observed immediately. Sometimes it takes several months to feel the disease subsiding.
To cleanse yourself at midnight, you need to wash your face with blessed water and wash the diseased areas with it. You should say: “Holy water, wash away the excess.”
The following ritual is suitable for the New Year according to the old style or Epiphany.
The ritual must be performed at night. Exactly at twelve o'clock at night you need to take off any old thing and burn it. They whisper: “I burn this thing (the thing must be named), I drive away the illness from myself.”
Men who want to be healed of urological ailments need to take a bath on a festive evening and put their cross in it. The next step is for the patient to immerse himself in the water. Next you need to say three times:
After this, you should lower yourself completely into the water for 3-5 seconds. Then you can leave the bathroom. The ritual ends with the consumption of the prepared holy water - just three sips are enough.
Duration and cost of baptism
- Time . Most often it is 40-45 minutes. However, the ceremony can last up to 2 hours (it all depends on the number of people being baptized).
- Money . According to tradition, baptism is a rite for which no money should be collected (parents or godparents can voluntarily leave donations to the church). However, in some churches there may be a “price list”, which will indicate the amount of donation not only for different types of rituals, but also for additional services - for example, permission to photograph or video film. You can find out specific numbers only in the temple you are interested in. Most often we are talking about an amount from 500 to 2000 rubles.
And in some churches, parents or godparents may be asked to bring not money, but wine (for rituals) and a cake (for Sunday children's school).
If your family is not able to pay for baptism at all, the priest cannot refuse to perform the ceremony.
To get rid of loneliness
Not everyone manages to quickly find their soul mate. A separate custom will allow you to solve this problem - any old things are burned on Christmas Eve.
For the ritual you will need:
- a handful of remaining ashes;
- three hairs plucked from the head;
- candle wax.
All elements collected for the ritual are rolled into a ball. When midnight comes, it must be thrown out the window. At this moment you need to say: “I drive away loneliness from myself (it is advisable to say the words with feeling), but I invite kindness and love!”
A ritual that will help spouses conceive a child
Preparations begin three days before the holiday. Before the Baptism of the Lord, the couple must sleep separately. On the eve of the holiday, a woman needs to go to church and attend the entire night service.
Until she plunges into the ice hole three times in the morning after the service, she cannot enter into dialogue even with her loved ones. My husband needs to go to another temple. He should plunge in the same way three times. Having completed these actions, the couple meets and spends the night together. After the ritual, the likelihood of conceiving a child increases.
What to do to remove negativity
This method helps to cope even with severe damage. To perform the ritual, on Epiphany night you need to collect consecrated water, which is consecrated a second time in the temple. You need to buy three candles in the church. You cannot talk to anyone on the way home. You need to lay a white cotton tablecloth on the table, and place a container with water in the middle.
One of the candles is placed behind the vessel. The remaining pair of candles should be placed on the sides. You need to light candles with one match.
Next, you need to look at the reflection of the fire for several minutes. At this time, you need to place your hands on a container with holy water and try to feel how the flame warms them. At some point, you will feel a surge of energy. At this moment you need to say:
After pronouncing the spell, you need to wet your fingers in water and wipe your face well. The rest of the water is spilled on the head in the bath. After the ritual, you cannot take out or give household items to anyone for a week.
What happens after baptism
At the end of the Sacrament of spiritual rapprochement with God, the godparents are given a corresponding certificate. It contains the following information: when and where the baptism ceremony was performed, the name day.
Baptismal certificate
It doesn’t end there, because in the near future it is necessary to visit the church again to give the new convert communion (in general, this should be done at least once a week). Sometimes the priest gives communion to the baptized person immediately, but more often he orders him to come back after a few days. This action is performed at the end of the morning liturgy. In this case, no prior registration is required and there will be no need to wait for the service - young children receive Holy Communion without a queue. Red wine is used for this (symbolizing the Blood of Christ).
The Orthodox Church calls on all true Christians to take communion more often. If this has not been done for quite a long period, then you can undergo the Sacrament before baptism. If this is not done, then a Christian is considered such conditionally. It turns out that while introducing a child to the church, he himself remains outside of it.
Rite of Communion
Children can receive communion in any church of the Orthodox faith. If the child is over 4 years old, then you cannot eat anything before such a procedure; children do not have to follow this rule. Until the age of seven there is no need to confess. After communion, you can leave immediately and not have to wait until the end of the entire service.
