Every believer needs a certain spiritual preparation and practice. It must be constant, or it will be very difficult to achieve any progress. For this, the Orthodox have a proven method - reading the prayer rule. It is advisable to start each day with morning prayers. Which ones are they reading, how to do it correctly?
About the author About the book
Why read morning prayers?
Prayer is not a guarantee that all desires will be fulfilled. But we must believe and turn to God not only in grief and not only according to the prayer book or akathist with emphasis or listen with subtitles. The morning call to God is an important part of our life. Always trust your life to the Lord, believe, and with your prayer let His goodness and mercy into your destiny through the morning call.
Pray regularly according to the prayer book or akathist, listen with subtitles or read in your own words. The Church blesses you to believe and read even the short morning and evening prayers, which are in any prayer book or akathist with emphasis, daily (or, with the blessing of the priest, replace it with 10-12 minutes of short prayer on the rosary). Add prayer for family to your daily prayers. Visit the temple and proceed to the Sacraments of the Church: Baptism, if you have not been baptized, Wedding, which is God’s blessing to your family, Confession and Communion. Read prayers before the Sacraments - this is church law.
Easter prayers in the morning consist of short Easter Hours, which can also be listened to with short subtitles.
My Most Holy Lady Theotokos, through Your saints and all-powerful prayers, take away from me, Your humble and accursed servant, despondency, oblivion, foolishness, negligence, and all that is filthy, bow ugly and blasphemous thoughts from my damned heart and from my darkened mind; and extinguish the flame of my passions, for I am poor and damned. And deliver me from many and cruel memories and enterprises, and free me from all evil actions. For Thou art blessed from all generations, and glorified is Thy most honorable name forever and ever. Amen.
How to read morning and evening prayers
In the morning you are supposed to pray immediately after waking up, before meals and the start of the work day, and in the evening you can choose any time, the main thing is that all work for the current day is completed.
Prayer should be performed in a secluded place, in front of an icon, with a lit lamp or candle. First you need to cross yourself and make several bows. Then tune in, concentrate and begin to read the prayers in the order indicated in the prayer book. You can read both aloud and silently. Prayers for loved ones, appeals to the Lord, spoken in your own words - all this is also an obligatory part of prayer.
It is important to thank the Lord and ask for His blessings before the upcoming trials of life.
It is very important to understand the meaning of each word that is spoken in prayers. For this purpose, there are translations of prayers from Church Slavonic into Russian in explanatory prayer books; they are worth studying so that the reading is conscious.
It is important to pray with a pure heart, in which there is no bitterness, evil, resentment, or irritation. If a believer feels these emotions, it is necessary to get rid of them. One way is to pray for the health of the one who offended. This will cleanse the soul, calm the ardor and set one in a gracious mood.
As a rule, with some practice, reading morning and evening prayers takes an average of 20 minutes. But currently the laity is faced with a problem. In our modern world, when the pace of life is so high that the lack of time is felt at every step, it can be difficult for Orthodox believers who begin to practice daily readings to find time for prayer in their busy schedule. As a rule, people rush to work in the morning and collapse from fatigue in the evening. And there is no time left for reading prayers with a thoughtful, focused approach. And it is important to read prayers sincerely, with diligence.
Pronouncing the text in a tongue twister, formally is not necessary for anyone and is even harmful in a conversation with God.
In this case, you need to rearrange your daily schedule, find another time for prayers, some prayers can even be read at work or on the road. But all this must be discussed with your confessor or the priest with whom you regularly confess. Sometimes the priest may allow you to read not the full volume of prayers. The main thing in morning and evening prayers is the right attitude, concentration, and a message to the Lord from the heart.
Rule for reading prayer
Follow a few simple rules when reading short morning prayers according to the prayer book or akathist:
- Read your morning prayer before business, resorting to the help of the Lord, preferably in silence, at least, nothing should distract you.
- Before this, it is important to focus on the words of the morning prayer so that your thoughts do not wander.
- Give up mechanical memorization and repetition of morning and any other prayers, trying to understand the meaning of the spoken words and their deep meaning, their power in this and other reality. This is not a dogma or a law. It’s even easier to read the rule of morning prayer according to the prayer book, you can do it in Church Slavonic, you can do it according to the Old Believer, but not mechanically. Morning prayers are a common request today.
- Prepare your thoughts for reading the prayer, reflect on your confession of sins and the omnipotence of God, bow with love before the Lord. This can be done even while reading morning prayers with emphasis on the prayer book or akathist. They can also be used to prepare for confession; church law is not against it.
During the Easter period, the rule consists of short Hours and the Canon of Easter.

Prayer 1, St. Macarius the Great, to God the Father
Eternal God and King of every creature, who has vouchsafed me even at this hour to come, forgive me the sins I have committed this day in deed, word and thought, and cleanse, O Lord, my humble soul from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit. And grant me, Lord, to pass through this dream in peace at night, so that, rising from my humble bed, I will please Your most holy name all the days of my life, and will trample the fleshly and incorporeal enemies that fight me. And deliver me, Lord, from vain thoughts that defile me, and from evil lusts. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary
Good Mother of the King, Most Pure and Blessed Mother of God Mary, pour out the mercy of Thy Son and our God on my passionate soul and with Thy prayers instruct me in good deeds, so that I may pass through the rest of my life without blemish and through Thee I will find paradise, O Virgin Mother of God, the only Pure One and Blessed One.
Prayer to the Holy Guardian Angel
Angel of Christ, my holy guardian and protector of my soul and body, forgive me all who have sinned this day, and deliver me from every wickedness of the enemy who opposes me, so that in no sin I will anger my God; but pray for me, a sinful and unworthy servant, that you may show me worthy of the goodness and mercy of the All-Holy Trinity and the Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ and all the saints. Amen.
Kontakion to the Mother of God
To the chosen Voivode, victorious, as having been delivered from the evil ones, let us write thanks to Thy servants, the Mother of God, but as having an invincible power, free us from all troubles, let us call Ti; Rejoice, Unbrided Bride.
Glorious Ever-Virgin, Mother of Christ God, bring our prayer to Your Son and our God, may You save our souls.
I place all my trust in You, Mother of God, keep me under Your roof.
Virgin Mary, do not despise me, a sinner, who requires Your help and Your intercession, for my soul trusts in You, and have mercy on me.
Prayers for Lent
From year to year, the Slavic custom of fasting finds new followers. People want to be cleansed according to the rule, both spiritually and physically. But without prayer and repentance, fasting becomes just a diet. Physical fasting and morning prayers, without spiritual fasting - good deeds, correction of one's heart, getting rid of bad habits in words and deeds - brings little to the salvation of the soul, and can be spiritually harmful, if even a Slavic person, abstaining from food, is imbued with the consciousness of his own superiority from the knowledge that he is fasting.
True fasting is associated with prayer (it is not necessary to use the Church Slavonic language according to the prayer book or akathist; read the prayer in your own words without translation), repentance. And in the moment after fasting, during the Easter period, morning prayer consists of the Hours and the Canon of Easter. This is the main prayer of the Mother of God.
It is worthy that You are truly blessed, the Mother of God, the Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and the Mother of our God. We magnify Thee, the most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison, the Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption.
Orthodox Life
What is the healing power of morning and evening prayers, says priest Andrei Chizhenko.
His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine recently said interesting words in one of his sermons about how the world is trying to hijack man’s prayer and dissolve his union with God.
And so the vanity of this everyday vale tries to overwhelm a person and drown him, like the raging sea of the holy supreme apostle Peter during his walk on the waters - to Christ. And the main thing here is not to lose the course - the direction of the soul towards God. And the Lord is always ready to help.
In this race to obtain material values for the sake of pampering, comfort and satisfaction of passions, a person loses the most important thing - unity with God, conversation with the living God, which is the only thing needed, as the Fathers of the Church often say, following the words of the Gospel.
This is especially clearly seen in the example of how a Christian relates to morning and evening prayer rules. Oh, how often I don’t want to read them! A lot of excuses: I’m very tired, I want to watch my favorite TV series on TV, sit on social networks, chat with family, friends, relatives, a lot of work until late at night, etc., etc....
But you need to be honest with yourself. And, with God’s help, look at the root of the issue. This earthly vale, this vanity is not only a bodily, material property, no. It, like an octopus, penetrates the mind, soul and heart of a person and, like poison, poisons them. Spending many hours every day in this bustle becomes a kind of drug for a person, without which he can no longer live. Roughly speaking, a person sits still, but there is no peace in his soul. His hands and knees are dancing, trying to run, to dive into this bustle. Why is alcoholism so common? Switching moment. Rapid brain deceleration. How often can you hear phrases like “I drank and relaxed”, “I drink to relax”, or “I can’t relax any other way” from an alcoholic or drunkard. Indeed, the psyche cannot withstand this continuous running through the vale of earth, this external and internal vanity, the product of which is life in constant stress, in constant nervous tension.
But there is a way out other than alcohol. It's much better and safer. This is prayer. The motto should not be “drink and relax,” but “pray and relax.” They just pray much less than they drink. Why? When drinking, you don’t have to make an initial effort on yourself. And in prayer it is necessary. What is this effort?
The beginning of a prayer rule for a person is a rather painful process. He needs to escape from this vale, as if he were pulling his leg out of a swamp. And not even the leg, but the whole body. How painful and difficult it is! It’s as if some kind of surgical operation is happening on you. By separating you from the world. Your members creak and groan like the rigging on an old wooden sailboat. There is much in you that resists prayer. And you are so tired! So tired! But if you don’t give up, if you continue to follow the prayer rule, then a miracle happens. Often it happens completely suddenly, unexpectedly for you. But suddenly you feel something like the sun, which suddenly looked out through leaden impenetrable clouds. You feel another huge world. It seemed that you were saying the words of the prayer absent-mindedly, without due attention, but suddenly one single word became for you the door to God. And He lets you in to Himself and Himself enters your cage-room. And everything in you is suddenly washed, smoothed and unraveled. And it becomes light.
And so one person began to pray, and another person finished it - healed, spiritually purified.
This is the effect of the prayer rule. This is our main task on this earth - to learn to talk with the living God. Everything else is water escaping through a leaky sieve and sand flowing through your fingers.
Prayer for good luck
Luck – success in everything here and now? In fact, the Lord gives us His goodness and mercy not as “luck,” but as what we need right now for happiness. Think about what is the will of God and His goodness, reading the morning prayers, the morning prayer itself... The most “powerful prayer” is the Sacrament of Communion at the Liturgy in any language without translation, this is entry into the Orthodox Church, communion with the grace of God.
Having risen from sleep, I thank Thee, Holy Trinity, for for the sake of Thy goodness and long-suffering you were not angry with me, lazy and sinful, and you destroyed me with my iniquities. mi; but you loved mankind as a rule, and in the despair of a man who lay, you raised me up to exercise and glorify your power. And now enlighten my mental eyes, open my lips, to learn Your words, and to understand Your commandments, and to do Your will, and to sing to You in confession with my heart, and to sing praises to the All-Holy. Your name, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages centuries. Amen.
Prayers for Beginners
An important point for those who begin morning prayer is at least a short morning church appeal to the goodness and power of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord - this is a great protection for every person. The prayer that begins the work is not a “left” text, but an appeal specifically to the Cross, its interpretation is simple. This prayer for mercy is also Old Believer. After all, the Old Believer theme appeared in the mid-17th century, when the Russian Orthodox Church underwent the reform of Patriarch Nikon, and now it is simply a left branch of Orthodoxy, associated with a slightly different implementation of liturgical instructions, different Old Believer traditions. And the Church Slavonic language for morning prayers is used both in Old Believer texts and in Orthodoxy without translation. The morning Old Believer and Orthodox prayers for goodness do not differ in any way in interpretation. Old Believers cross themselves in the same way - not with their left hand, but with their right hand. Below is the text of the Creed.
I believe in one God, the Father, Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only begotten, who was born of the Father before all ages; Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, to whom all things were. For our sake, man and our salvation, who came down from heaven and became incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became human. Crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried. And he rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures. And ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father. And the one who is to come will judge with glory the living and the dead, His Kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Life-Giving One, who proceeds from the Father, who is with the Father and the Son, we are worshiped and glorified, who spoke the prophets. Into one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. I hope for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the next century. Amen.

Psalm 50
About the author About the book
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy, and according to the multitude of Your compassions, cleanse my iniquity. Above all, wash me from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin; for I know my iniquity, and I will take away my sin before me. I have sinned against You alone and have done evil before You, so that You may be justified in Your words and triumph over Your judgment. Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and my mother gave birth to me in sins. Behold, you have loved the truth; You have shown me Your unknown and secret wisdom. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be clean; Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. There is joy and gladness in my ears; the bones of the humble will rejoice. Turn away Your face from my sins and cleanse all my iniquities. Create a pure heart in me, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Do not cast me away from Your presence and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Give me the joy of Your salvation and strengthen me with the Lord’s Spirit. I will teach the wicked your way, and wickedness will turn to you. Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, God of my salvation; my tongue will rejoice in Your righteousness. Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will declare Your praise. As if you had desired sacrifices, you would have given them: you do not favor burnt offerings. The sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; God will not despise a contrite and humble heart. Bless Zion, O Lord, with Your favor, and may the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then take pleasure in the sacrifice of righteousness, the offering and the burnt offering; then they will place your calf on the altar.

Amen.
Fifth prayer, Saint Basil the Great
Lord Almighty, God of hosts and all flesh, living in the highest and looking upon the humble, searching the hearts and wombs and innermost parts of men, the forerunner, the Beginningless and Ever-Everlasting Light, With Him there is no change, or change, overshadowing; Himself, Immortal King, accept our prayers, even at this time, for the multitude of Your generosity boldly, from the profane we create to You, and forgive us our sins, even in deed, and in word, and in thought, in knowledge, or in ignorance, we have sinned; and cleanse us from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit. And grant us with a cheerful heart and sober thoughts to pass through the whole night of this present life, awaiting the coming of the bright and revealed day of Your Only Begotten Son, Lord and God and our Savior Jesus of Christ, in the same place the Judge of all will come with glory, to whom he will give according to his deeds; let us not fall and become lazy, but be alert and raised up for the work of what is to come, prepare for joy and the Divine palace of His glory in the depths, where those who celebrate the unceasing voice, and unspeakable sweetness in vain those who see Your face with unspeakable kindness. For You are the true Light, you enlighten and sanctify all things, and all creation sings to You forever and ever. Amen.
Prayer six, of the same saint
We bless you, O highest God and Lord of mercy, who always does with us great and unexplored, glorious and terrible, the number of which is innumerable, giving us sleep for the repose of our weakness, and weakening of labor in laborious flesh. We thank Thee, for Thou didst not destroy us with our iniquities, but Thou didst love mankind as usual, and in the hopelessness of us, Thou didst raise thee to glorify Thy power. Moreover, we pray for Your immeasurable goodness, enlighten our thoughts, clear our minds, and raise our minds from the heavy sleep of laziness: open our lips, and let me fulfill Your praise, so that we can unshakably sing and confess to You, in all, and from all to the glorified God, To the Beginningless Father, with Your Only Begotten Son, and Your All-Holy and Good and Life-Giving Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Seventh prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos
I sing of Your grace, O Lady, I pray to You, my mind is filled with grace. Teach me to walk the right way, along the path of Christ’s commandments. Strengthen your vigil for the song, driving away despondency and sleep. Bound by the captives of the Falls, allow them through Your prayers, Bride of God. Preserve me by night and by day, delivering me from the fighting enemy. She who gave birth to God, the life-giver, was killed by my passions and revived. Even the One who gave birth to the non-evening Light, enlighten my blind soul. O wondrous Lady of the Palace, create for me the house of the Divine Spirit. You who gave birth to a doctor, heal my soul of many years of passion. Worried by the storm of life, guide me towards the path of repentance. Deliver me from eternal fire, and from evil worms, and from Tartarus. May the demon not show me joy, even though I am guilty of many sins. Create me again, having promised to be insensible, Most Immaculate, without sin. Show me the strangeness of all kinds of torment, and implore everyone to the Lord. Heavenly God grant me joy, with all the saints. Most Holy Virgin, hear the voice of Your unneeded servant. Give me tears, Most Pure One, that cleanse my soul of filth. I bring lamentations from my heart to You unceasingly, be diligent, Lady. Accept my prayer service and offer it to the gracious God. Greatest Angel, created me above the merging of the world. Light-bringing heavenly Sena, direct spiritual grace in me. I lift up my hands and lips to praise, defiled with filth, O All-Immaculate One. Deliver me from the dirty tricks that are choking me, diligently beseeching Christ; To him is due honor and worship, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Prayer eight, to our Lord Jesus Christ
My most merciful and all-merciful God, Lord Jesus Christ, for the sake of love you came down and became incarnate, so that you might save everyone. And again, Savior, save me by grace, I pray to You; Even if you save me from works, there is no grace and no gift, but more than debt. Hey, abundant in generosity and unspeakable in mercy! Believe in Me, O my Christ, you will live and will not see death forever. Even if faith, even in You, saves the desperate, behold, I believe, save me, for You are my God and Creator. Let faith instead of works be imputed to me, O my God, for you will not find works to justify me. But may my faith prevail instead of all, may it answer, may it justify me, may it show me to be a partaker of Your eternal glory. May Satan not snatch me away and boast, O Word, that he has torn me away from Your hand and fence; But either I want to save me, or I don’t want to, O Christ my Savior, foretell that I will soon perish: For you are my God from my mother’s womb. Grant me, Lord, now to love Thee, as I sometimes loved that very sin; and to work again for you without laziness is as boring as you worked before to the flattering Satan. Most of all, I will serve You, my Lord and God Jesus Christ, all the days of my life, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Ninth prayer to the Guardian Angel
Holy Angel, standing before my damned soul and my passionate life, do not forsake me, a sinner, and depart from me for my intemperance. Do not give room to the crafty demon to possess me through the violence of this mortal body; strengthen my poor and thin hand and guide me on the path of salvation. To her, holy Angel of God, guardian and patron of my accursed soul and body, forgive me everything that I have offended you with in so many ways all the days of my life, and if I sinned in this past night, cover me in the present this day, and keep me from every temptation of the enemy May I not anger God in any sin, and pray for me to the Lord, that He may strengthen me in His passion, and show me worthy as a servant of His goodness. Amen.
Prayer tenth, to the Most Holy Theotokos
My Most Holy Lady Theotokos, through Your saints and all-powerful prayers, take away from me, Your humble and accursed servant, despondency, oblivion, foolishness, negligence, and all that is filthy, bow ugly and blasphemous thoughts from my damned heart and from my darkened mind; and extinguish the flame of my passions, for I am poor and damned. And deliver me from many and cruel memories and enterprises, and free me from all evil actions. For Thou art blessed from all generations, and glorified is Thy most honorable name forever and ever. Amen.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Lord have mercy. (Thrice)
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother, our holy and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.
Prayer Tchaikovsky
The interpretation of hope for God's help is not weakness, but true trust in the goodness of God through humility and understanding that in our own strength we must and can only do part of the work on this day of our lives. Tchaikovsky also understood this. The great composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky wrote a number of works specifically for church prayers, mornings, their texts based on the prayer book and akathist with the hope of the goodness of the Lord.
Lord, by Your many goodness and Your great bounties You have given me, Your servant, the passing time of this night to pass without misfortune from all evil that is contrary to me; You Yourself, Master of all Creators, grant me with Your true light and an enlightened heart to do Your will, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Prayer Our Father
The prayer “Our Father” in Orthodoxy is also called morning or evening. In the mornings we read the church text Our Father (Father) as a request for everything for this day according to the prayer book or akathist, or by heart.
Our Father, who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as it is in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, just as we forgive our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
Muslim prayer
Muslim prayer, of course, differs from Christian prayer in its prayer book or akathist. Suffice it to say what time Muslims have morning prayer during the day - in each region, at different times of the year, morning prayer is performed at different times. You need to know that a Muslim reveres Christ, but as a prophet, not as God, but as a Father. And there is no reason for Muslims and Christians to be at enmity.
Amen.
What types are there?
There is a complete and brief prayer rule.
There is a complete prayer rule - it can be found in every “Orthodox prayer book”. And there is a short one . If a situation arises when there is little time and energy for the prayer rule, you can read the short version with attention and reverence. For example, in the morning you can read:
- Heavenly King;
- Trisagion;
- Our Father;
- Virgin Mary;
- Having risen from sleep;
- God have mercy on me;
- Symbol of faith;
- God, cleanse;
- To You, Master;
- Saint Angele;
- Holy Lady;
- invocation of saints;
- prayer for the living and the dead.
What to read in the evening:
- Heavenly King;
- Trisagion;
- Our Father;
- Have mercy on us, Lord;
- God eternal;
- The Good of the King;
- Angel of Christ;
- from the Chosen Voevode to Worthy to Eat.
In the modern accelerated pace of life, given the workload, it is quite difficult to set aside a certain time for the prayer rule. The enemy of morning prayer is haste, and the enemy of evening prayer is fatigue. In such situations, short options are what save you. There is also a short prayer rule of St. Seraphim of Sarov , when a person is extremely tired or very limited in time. It includes:
- Our Father - read three times;
- To the Virgin Mary - three times;
- Creed - once.
There are also prayer rules that are read on a specific occasion: for example, in preparation for Holy Communion.
