John of Kronstadt (real name Ivan Sergiev) is a great preacher and sorcerer, spiritual mentor and writer, a famous church and public figure. The future priest was born on October 19, 1829 (the village of Sura, Arkhangelsk province) and was very weak from birth, so his parents decided to baptize him immediately. The sacrament of baptism really helped, and the baby immediately became stronger.
The father actively introduced his son to spiritual life, took him to church every day, and cultivated obedience and love of worship. John graduated from college and then from Arkhangelsk Theological Seminary. After studying at the St. Petersburg Theological Academy in 1885, he married and accepted the priesthood at St. Andrew's Cathedral in Kronstadt. It is surprising that this particular temple appeared to him more than once in his childhood dreams.
Almost the entire life of the greatest ascetic was spent in Kronstadt. Believers began to call the priest “Kronstadt,” and he himself signed his new name. In preaching the gospel, John urged his parishioners to “love every person, both in his sin and in his shame,” emphasizing that every person is created in the image of God.
God's gift of miracles appeared in John, thanks to which the glory of the archpriest spread throughout Russia. He healed the sick with prayers, confessing his sinfulness and insignificance before God, and the Lord sent down his mercy. It happened that the blind received their sight, and those who were on their deathbeds suddenly recovered.
Thousands of people flocked to John every day, wanting to see the miracle worker in person and receive help from him. The priest immediately distributed huge sums of money that went to charity, fed the poor, and built churches and monasteries.
Everyone who at least once participated in a divine service with John of Kronstadt was immediately transformed and strengthened in the faith. During the Divine Liturgy, tears flowed from the preacher’s eyes, and every word of prayer was pronounced by him clearly, expressively and deeply from the bottom of his soul.
Despite the illness that John hid from outsiders, he tried to celebrate the Divine Liturgy in his church for the last time and on December 20, 1908, he went to the Almighty, predicting in advance the date of his death. The saint was buried in the Ioannovsky Monastery, which he built, and was canonized by the church before the righteous in 1990. The saint is commemorated on June 14 and January 2 (days of glorification).
