Annunciation Church
- Orthodox church in Tyumen. Built to replace the Annunciation Cathedral, the first stone church in Tyumen, destroyed during Soviet times.
History[edit]
First Council[edit]
The first stone church in Tyumen, until 1913 it was the cathedral church of the city. It was located on the high bank of the Tura River opposite the City Duma building.
The construction of the cathedral in honor of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary began in Tyumen, by decree of Peter I, on May 31, 1700, and was carried out at public expense under the leadership of St. Philotheus (Leshchinsky), Metropolitan of Tobolsk and Siberia.
Annunciation Cathedral before destruction
The main construction was completed in 1704. In the same year, Metropolitan Philotheus consecrated the main chapel of the cathedral. Construction came to a standstill due to a shortage of iron: just at this time, Peter I was at war with the Swedes, and there was a shortage of metal in Russia. The date of completion of the construction of the Annunciation Cathedral has not been preserved; it supposedly happened in 1708, when iron was delivered to Tyumen from the Urals.
In 1886, a women's church school was opened at the cathedral, located in a rented house. In 1897, there were 38 people studying there, in 1901 - 36 people, in 1903 - 41 people. In 1913, a parochial school also operated at the church, located in its own house.
According to the staff, the clergy consisted of a rector with the rank of archpriest, a deacon and two psalm-readers. There were two villages in the parish.
From 1850 to 1914, city authorities repeatedly discussed the danger from the landslide of the bank of the Tura River. At the same time, there was a debate about the construction of a new city cathedral church on Tsarskaya Street (now Republic Street), opposite the church in the name of Simeon the God-Receiver.
On September 8, 1913, it lost its status as the cathedral church of Tyumen, which was assigned to the Znamensky Church.
On December 11, 1929, the temple was closed and transferred to the district local history museum. It was set up as a museum of the history of religions and atheism, and on the night of June 13-14, 1932 it was blown up, explaining that the church building could soon collapse into the river. It was not possible to destroy the temple the first time; some walls were preserved almost entirely. Two years later, the cathedral was finally turned into a pile of stones. The bricks were given for the construction of a holiday home, and the remains were thrown off a cliff in Tura. Twelve Christians who stood up to defend the temple were killed.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the foundation of the church is the basis of a pedestrian bridge across the Tura River. After the explosion, the bank collapsed not only in the place where the temple was, but also the entire street, which ran closer to the cliff parallel to the street. Tsarskaya (Republic St.).
Reconstruction of the cathedral[edit]
Project of a new church
In 2001, a parish in honor of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was registered in Tyumen.
A decision was made to restore the Annunciation Cathedral, which was blown up during Soviet times. Due to the impossibility of restoring it in its original place, it was decided to restore the cathedral in a new place - in the Deputies Park of the city of Tyumen.
On April 7, 2004, on the feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the icon of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was found from the royal doors of an unknown destroyed church.
On April 15 of the same year, Archbishop Dimitry (Kapalin) of Tobolsk and Tyumen consecrated a worship cross and a plot of land for the construction of a temple.
On September 20, a chapel was installed on the construction site, which was consecrated on January 9, 2005.
On April 7, 2007, the consecration took place and the first pile was driven for the construction of the temple. On October 20 of the same year, bricks taken from the foundation of the blown-up Annunciation Cathedral were laid into the altar wall of the temple under construction.
On April 7, 2009, the consecration of the crosses and the raising of the dome to the bell tower took place.
In March 2012, the main dome, cross and domes were raised onto the temple.
On May 11, 2013, the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the lower chapel of the church by Archbishop Dimitry (Kapalin) of Tobolsk.
On April 25, 2014, Friday of Bright Week, Metropolitan Dimitri of Tobolsk and Bishop Tikhon of Ishim celebrated the first Divine Liturgy in the upper church of the cathedral.

Architectural uniqueness of the Tyumen shrine
The Tyumen Znamensky Church owes its unique architecture and interior decoration to its unique style, Siberian Baroque. Thanks to its rich decor and exterior in white and blue tones, even on cloudy days, the Tyumen shrine delights with its variety of shapes and light-and-shadow modeling. The author of this most beautiful structure is unknown, but thanks to his stylistic flair, the complete harmony of the temple was never disturbed during reconstruction and repairs.
On the western side of the main cathedral there is an entrance gate, with a bell tower rising above it. To get to the refectory, you need to go through the main porch, go under the choirs, which have been preserved from pre-revolutionary times, and are represented by carved wooden consoles and wooden lathing.
The arched openings of the refectory allow you to see both aisles:
- from the north is the Church of St. Nicholas the Pleasant;
- from the south - John Chrysostom.
The magnificent paintings were made in the second half of the twentieth century. To our great regret, the icons painted by the coachman F. Cherepanov disappeared along with the iconostasis; the modern iconostasis was made by master I. Shavrin, an icon painter of the famous Karavaevsky workshop. The solemnity of the new iconostasis is very appropriate in a temple with richly painted walls.

Christ is risen!
For those who followed Him and who listened to His teaching, For those who entered Jerusalem with Him, For those who stood next to the cross. Christ is risen!
For those who knew about Him, But we are tormented by various doubts, Having thought about everything, remained with his own, Appreciated everything and did not follow Him.
Christ is risen!
For those who lived in sins, And were rightly despised, But having met Christ on their way, Suddenly they radically changed their lives.
Christ is risen!
For those who came to God’s temple to stand in prayer, learn to always be close to God and sympathize with Him in His suffering.
Christ is risen!
For those who did not want to know about Him or hear the words of teaching. For those who beat, laughed and spat, And handed over to terrible torment. For all our enemies and for friends, For different nationalities and races. For all people without exception. Christ has risen for each of us!

The Church of the Exaltation of the Cross or St. Nicholas Church has been rising on a hill in the historical part of Tyumen for more than two centuries. Nearby are some of the most important attractions: the embankment of the Tura River, the pedestrian bridge of Lovers and the City Duma Museum of Local Lore. The building is surrounded by utility buildings and a small grove that hides the temple from the noise of Republic Street.
There is also an Orthodox gymnasium on site. Although nothing remains of the former Baroque decorations, the church is visited by numerous parishioners and excursion groups. Students from the neighboring construction institute are also brought here for practical classes.
Story
The Church of the Exaltation of the Cross was founded in 1774. Money for construction was collected from parishioners and eminent families of the city. After some time, the merchant Kolokolnikov became the trustee of the temple, in whose estate the museum is now located. The site for the construction of the building was chosen on the hills of the Zatyumensky Cape, where the Tyumenka River flows into the Tura. The illumination of the church took place seventeen years later in 1791.
The original name Voskresenskaya was later changed to Vozdvizhenskaya in honor of the Honest and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord. Residents of four settlements became its parishioners. The Baroque architectural composition included one main and four secondary domes, as well as a bell tower. The external design of the facades was richly decorated with stucco with patterns.
During the Soviet years, everything was lost during renovation work here. Just like other churches, the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross was closed and converted for economic needs. At first, a mechanical workshop of an agricultural technical school was opened here. Later, a DOSAAF school, a shooting range and a student club operated inside. Services resumed only in 1993. A building for a religious school was built on the territory. The second consecration took place in the summer of 1998 by Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II.
Until 2011, the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross was part of the Holy Trinity Monastery. But after the Diocesan Council, a decision was made to create an independent parish near the church. An Orthodox gymnasium now hosts classes in the building of the former school. On weekends there is a Sunday school with classes for children and adults.

Holy image of the “Sign” of the Mother of God
As mentioned above, there are many holy images in the church. The main holy image in the Cathedral is the face of Our Lady of the Sign. This image worked real miracles. The first miracle was associated with a cholera outbreak that occurred in 1848.
It was then that one of the parishioners of the church had a dream in which he saw the miraculous icon of the “Sign” of the Mother of God. In a dream, he dreamed that if he removed the face from the bell tower and took it around the city, the outbreak of the disease would disappear. A parishioner who saw this dream came to the Cathedral and retold it to other believers.
The best article for you, go to: Prince Vladimir Cathedral in St. Petersburg
They decided to make the dream come true and took the image from the bell tower and took it on a hike around the city, while they went into houses where people living with this disease lived. A few days later, the epidemic of the disease began to gradually subside, and people who were sick with cholera began to recover.
This miraculous phenomenon aroused real strong faith in the souls of the parishioners. Since then, the holy face remained in the temple premises.
