The miracle of motherhood is revered in almost every culture and tradition and, of course, the Mother of God occupies a special position in the Orthodox tradition. There are a huge number of options for iconographic images and each has its own “specialization”. In particular, the Mammal icon is used to receive a special blessing for lactation and other maternal functions.
Date of celebration: January 25
The icon of the nursing Mother of God is especially revered by those who are directly involved in motherhood, that is, by nursing women, as well as by those who are carrying a child or have recently been delivered from pregnancy. The image shows the Virgin Mary herself, feeding the infant Christ with her own breast.
History of the icon
The most ancient icon of the Mother of God the Mammal was created in the distant fifth century. After this, the image stayed in Jerusalem for seven centuries and after that went to Athos. There the image was kept until the 19th century, after which it went to the territory of the Kursk region, where a special temple was created for prayer to the icon.
Throughout the history of the image, various facts of healing and help have been recorded. In particular, what the icon of the Mother of God Mammal helps with is most often noted:
- recovery from gynecological ailments;
- getting pregnant;
- eliminating difficulties during pregnancy;
- increase in milk quantity;
- easy birth.
Early versions depicted celestial bodies that indicated the earthly world. In turn, the figures of the mother and baby also carried a symbolic meaning; they spoke of the spiritual nutrition of believers. After all, the Mother of God sends her mercy to all believers, protects and helps everyone.

Prayer 1 O most pure and blessed Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, most holy Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, who incorruptibly gave birth and gave birth to the Savior of our souls, for our salvation, to be carried in Thy arms and from Thy breast to be nourished by the one who has willed! To You, as the most powerful intercessor and the most favorable prayer book to Him, we, sinners and unworthy, resort to You, and, falling before Your miraculous icon, we earnestly pray: pray for His goodness, so that anger will turn away from us for our countless sins, and turn us to the path of repentance and salvation. Protect our belly in peace with Your prayers, and ask for good haste in all good things, even granting us all the belly and piety we need. Deliver us from all misfortunes and troubles and unnecessary deaths through Your holy intercession and protect us from all enemies, visible and invisible. Keep our power in peace, health and longevity and be a strong and fortified bulwark for our entire country, so that we may live a quiet and silent life in all piety and purity, and so in the world this temporary life has passed, we will achieve eternal peace, where we will be worthy of heavenly the kingdom of Christ God, glorifying Him with the Father and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.
Prayer 2, for those who monk in the monastery O most gracious and all-generous Mother of the Virgin Mary, mother of the sweetest and most loving Lord Jesus! Hear us, sinners, praying to You before Your holy and miraculous icon, and for the sake of the multitude of our sins, do not remove Your holy cover from the monastery, in which this holy and miraculous icon of Yours has been glorified with signs and miracles, but keep it firm and unshakable from all visible enemies and the invisible, and from all misfortunes and misfortunes, save me unharmed. Be a good helper to all who live piously and work well in her, and deliver us from illness and famine, from flood and fire, from vain death and deadly plagues, and from all evil. Drive away from us the destroyer mental wolf, seeking to devour and bring our souls to hell, protect us from the temptations and temptations of the world and from vain and soul-harming entertainments. Strengthen our hearts in humility, meekness, obedience, silence, abstinence, patience, forgetfulness of malice and love, even in Christ Jesus our Lord, and strengthen the monastics in every work and labor. Forbid, O all-merciful One, Thy flock in the pastures of Christ’s commandments, and all the verbal sheep of Christ, gathered in Thy courtyard, preserve safe and unharmed from the temptations of the enemy, for, having lived piously in Thy monastery on earth, we will depart in peace to the abode of the heavenly kingdom, where the host of the righteous and saints, together with You, unceasingly glorify the most holy and blessed name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.
Different traditions
It must be said that the significance of the icon of the Virgin Mammal was noted in a special way not only in Orthodoxy, Catholicism also actively used this plot. Even if, over time, in Orthodoxy such a composition became for the most part an atypical and “highly specialized” option, then in Catholicism the Madonna and Child became a common image.
As you know, in Catholicism, images are more artistic in nature; they are actually paintings, only on religious themes. Therefore, artists here were given the opportunity to use many effective techniques. In particular, in the Mammal Icon of the Mother of God plot there is an opportunity to work with the subtle details of Mary’s face, emphasize various emotions, and create an amazing image of immaculate motherhood.
Many artists, for example Leonardo da Vinci, created similar images. However, after the 16th century, this artistic tradition was interrupted, as Catholics created a ban on the depiction of naked bodies, part of this ban was the image of the Virgin Mary nursing a baby.

What do they pray for in front of the icon of the Mother of God Mammal?
Here it is worth noting the miraculous image that was found in the city of Krestogorsk a couple of centuries ago. Now it is not difficult to see the Mammalian icon in the Church of the Assumption built there.
As a rule, women come to kiss in order to relieve themselves of their burden or simply to ask for help before giving birth.
This icon is also considered miraculous like the Athos icon and is revered by believers. Every year the image that hangs over the gates of the temple in Krestogorsk is lowered for worship.

Meaning of the icon
Although many, when they look at the Mammal icon of the Mother of God, understand what to pray for only based on direct associations (maternity, lactation, and the like), believers can also use this image in a more profound way. After all, we are talking about symbolism that relates to the incarnation of Christ (the Lord was born in the form of a man) and the relationship of people with the Lord. The Virgin Mary takes care of the Lord and gives him nourishment, in fact the opportunity to exist, but also the Almighty gives every person the opportunity to be born.
Such an amazing and inextricable connection allows you to deeply understand faith. Before the image there is something to think about.
Prayers before the Mammal Icon
Troparion, tone 3
Without seed from the Divine Spirit, by the will of the Father you conceived the Son of God, from the Father without a mother before the ages, but for our sake you were from You without a father, you gave birth to the flesh and you nourished the Child with milk, and do not cease to pray that our souls be delivered from troubles.
Kontakion, tone 5
Cleanse the souls of our feelings, we will see on the icon the glorious sacrament, the Creator of the universe and the Lord of the highest powers, held in our arms and nourished by Your breast like a Child, and, with fear and joy worshiping You and our Savior born of You, we will cry: Rejoice, Lady, Our life is the Nourisher.
Prayer
Accept, Lady Theotokos, the tearful prayers of Your servants who flow to You. We see You on the holy icon, carrying in your arms and feeding with milk Your Son and our God, the Lord Jesus Christ. Even if you gave birth to Him painlessly, and even more so, you weighed the maternal sorrows and infirmities of the sons and daughters of human beings. With the same warmth falling upon Thy whole-bearing image and tenderly kissing this, we pray to Thee, All-Merciful Lady: we, sinners, condemned to give birth to sickness and nourish our children in sorrow, mercifully spare and compassionately intercede, but our babies, who also gave birth to them, from the grave deliver from illness and bitter sorrow. Grant them health and well-being, and their nourishment will increase in strength, and those who feed them will be filled with joy and consolation, for even now, through Your intercession from the mouth of a baby and those who piss, the Lord will bring His praise. O Mother of the Son of God! Have mercy on the mother of the sons of men and on Your weak people: quickly heal the illnesses that befall us, quench the sorrows and sorrows that are upon us, and do not despise the tears and sighs of Your servants. Hear us on the day of sorrow who fall before Your icon, and on the day of joy of deliverance, accept the grateful praise of our hearts. Offer our prayers to the throne of Your Son and our God, may He be merciful to our sin and weakness and add His mercy to those who lead His Name, as we and our children glorify You, the merciful Intercessor and the true hope of our race, forever and ever. . Amen!

Kontakion 10 Save us all, if you want and can, O Most Holy Virgin, if we resort to Your all-honorable Protection, for this sake we pray to You: deliver us from the bitter troubles and sorrows that have come upon us, draw our hearts to a blessed refuge and teach us to cry out to God from You to the newborn: Alleluia. Ikos 10 We call You the indestructible wall and we know that we speak the truth, we know that You dearly love the Christian race, Your mercy and generosity are ever flowing out to those who cry out to You: Rejoice, who protects us from the snares of the enemy; Rejoice, you who save us from the slander of evil people. Rejoice, our kinsman who exchanges enmity for love; Rejoice, preserving peace and silence in our homes. Rejoice, helper of good intentions; Rejoice, you who put good advice in your heart. Rejoice, Virgin Mother of God, Mammal-Nursing One, who always nourishes us with Your mercy.
Kontakion 11 All kinds of singing were brought to You, Most Immaculate, by the prophets, foreseeing the seedless conception and birth from You of the Son of God; the shepherd and the wolves, who saw You giving birth and nourishing; and the whole baptized world praises You. We believe that until the end of the age the song of praise from the Christian generation to the One born of You will not cease: Alleluia.
Ikos 11 Thou art a luminous luminary, O Most Pure One, for us perishing in the darkness of sins and passions, enlightening our dark eyes, illuminating the heart with a higher mind, singing to Thee: Rejoice, Thou who gave birth to the Way, Truth and Life; Rejoice, you who entrust us to the true God. Rejoice, you who illuminate our dark souls with the light of the Gospel; Rejoice, thou who countest the wisdom of this age for nothing. Rejoice, the highest wisdom, which is love, planting in our hearts; Rejoice, help to everyone and in everything. Rejoice, Virgin Mother of God, Mammal-Nursing One, who always nourishes us with Your mercy.
Kontakion 12 The grace of God appeared miraculously in the Russian lands from the likeness of Your icon of the Mammal. Likewise, Mount Athos and our country, now suffering fiercely, but confidently trusting in Your mercy, cry out to the merciful God: Alleluia.
Ikos 12 Singing that You gave birth to our Savior and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and nourished Him with milk, we hope that none of Your requests will remain unanswered from Him, since the Sweetest Jesus Himself promised it; Having such firm hope in this, we praise You, our Joy and Consolation: Rejoice, you who transform fierce sorrows into joy; Rejoice, you who soften the hardness of our hearts with Your love. Rejoice, you who teach us to love God and our neighbor; Rejoice, instructing us to place our trust in God in our sorrows. Rejoice, thou who warmest our cold prayers with Thy love; Rejoice, the prayers of us sinners and unworthy as a merciful Mother who accepts. Rejoice, Virgin Mother of God, Mammal-Nursing One, who always nourishes us with Your mercy.
Kontakion 13 O All-praiseworthy Virgin Mother of God, who fed our Lord and Master with milk, do not despise this sorrowful prayer of ours, but implore Thy Son to grant us forgiveness of sins, healing of illnesses, may He save us from hunger, frost, deadly ulcers, unexpected deaths and all troubles and circumstances, and having been delivered from these, we joyfully call to Him: Alleluia.
(This kontakion is read three times, then ikos 1 and kontakion 1)
First Prayer Receive, O Lady Theotokos, the tearful prayers of Your servants who flow to You. We see You on the holy icon, carrying in your arms and feeding with milk Your Son and our God, the Lord Jesus Christ. Even if you gave birth to Him painlessly, even though the mother weighed the sorrow and infirmity of the sons and daughters of human beings. Falling with the same warmth towards Thy whole-bearing image and lovingly kissing this, we pray to Thee, all-merciful Lady: we, sinners, condemned to give birth to sickness and nourish our children in sorrow, mercifully spare and compassionately intercede, but our babies, who also gave birth to them, from the grave deliver from illness and bitter sorrow. Grant them health and prosperity, and their nourishment will increase in strength, and those who feed them will be filled with joy and consolation, for even now, through Your intercession from the mouth of a baby and those who piss, the Lord will bring His praise. O Mother of the Son of God! Have mercy on the mother of the sons of men and on Your weak people: quickly heal the illnesses that befall us, quench the sorrows and sorrows that are upon us, and do not despise the tears and sighings of Your servants. Hear us on the day of sorrow who fall before Your icon, and on the day of joy and deliverance receive the grateful praise of our hearts. Offer our prayers to the throne of Your Son and our God, may He be merciful to our sin and weakness and add His mercy to those who lead His name, as we and our children will glorify You, the merciful Intercessor and the true hope of our race, forever and ever. . Amen.
Second prayer O Most Holy Lady our Lady Theotokos, our Heavenly Queen, who nourished us with the milk of Christ our God, and feed us unworthy and many sinners with your rich mercy. Save and deliver us, Thy sinful servants, from vain slander, from all misfortune and misfortune and sudden death. Have mercy on us in the hours of the day, in the morning and in the evening, and at all times, protect us: protect us who stand, those who sit, and protect and protect those who walk on all paths, and protect and protect those who sleep in the night hours. Protect us, Lady Theotokos, from all our enemies, visible and invisible, and from every evil situation. In every place and at every time, be for us, Mother of Grace, an insurmountable wall and strong intercession, always, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.
Troparion, tone 3: Without seed from the Divine Spirit, by the will of the Father, you conceived the Son of God. From the Father, without a mother, before life existed, but for our sake, from You, without a father, you were flesh, you knew the Child and you nourished him with milk. Moreover, do not stop praying for our souls to be delivered from sorrows.
Magnification: We magnify You, Most Holy Virgin, Mammal of our Savior, and honor Your holy image, from which You have ever given us the grace of healing.
