Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker
The saint was born in a Greek colony in Asia Minor, he was the nephew of the bishop of the city of Patara, also Nicholas, and from an early age he helped in the church, and then became a priest there. When his father and mother died and left their son an inheritance, the young man acted according to the word of Christ: he distributed all his inheritance to the poor.
Today Demre, a town in Turkey, is famous only because the name of the saint and his episcopal ministry are associated with it. In the 3rd century the city was called Myra (Lycian, as it was located in the province of Lycia). Bishop Nicholas was distinguished by his merciful attitude towards the needy and the poor; he was kind and meek towards people, but irreconcilable and intolerant towards heretics. There is even a legend according to which the saint slapped Arius at the Council of Nicaea. This fact remains controversial: on the one hand, Nicholas considered Arius a “mad blasphemer”; on the other hand, a blow to the face does not agree with the image of the bishop’s high morality.
