To the Queen of the Angels and to all creation, the Lady Lady Theotokos, who receives the singing of praise from the angelic faces, grant us, earthly and earthly, to lift up to You the voices of praise of thanksgiving for Your great mercy to the human race. And even if we are not worthy to sing to You according to our heritage, yet You, as you are good, do not disdain our insufficient praises and, as Your Son mercifully accepted two mites of widows, so graciously hear us, crying out to You with tenderness:

Rejoice, who bore the Fire of the Divine in Your womb without burning; Rejoice, you who gave birth to the Savior of fallen humanity.

Rejoice, having abolished the power of hell by Your most honorable Nativity; Rejoice, you who freed Adam and Eve from the ancient curse.

Rejoice, thou who served immaculately for the incarnation of the One of the Trinity; Rejoice, you who without seed embodied the Creator of heaven and earth.

Briefly about the icon of the Mother of God “The Burning Bush”

This is one of the oldest Old Testament images of the Virgin Mary. The composition of the icon is full of symbolism and allegories and refers us to the biblical story of Moses. The Old Testament prophet was tending sheep when the Lord appeared to him in the form of a burning thorn bush. This bush was named Burning Bush. Iconographic theological thought clothed the Mother of God in this image. Just as a bush burned and did not burn, so the Mother of God eternally remains a Virgin: before Christmas, after Christmas and after Christmas she remains Most Pure. The Holy Spirit, who became Christ in Her, did not scorch Her with His Divine light - She turned out to be untouched and lived in immaculate purity until the end of her days.

Spreading the image

There are two iconographic schemes for this image. The first is a half-length image of the Virgin Mary (Oranta type) inside a bush engulfed in flames and Moses kneeling in front of her. This scheme became widespread in the early centuries of Christianity, but in the 16th century it was replaced by a more complex composition - the Mother of God and the Infant began to be depicted in the center of an octagonal star composed of two quadrangles.

The colors of the squares are red and green, in a colorful analogy with flames and thorn leaves. In the hands of the Most Pure Virgin is a ladder, the prototype of which is She herself, for She is the path to heaven (in this form the holy Patriarch Jacob saw Her). In other variations of this version, a stone or mountain is added to the ladder - a symbol of easier ascent to heaven.

In the elongated rays of an eight-pointed star are images of angels and archangels with attributes personifying their hypostases: a lantern, a rod, a censer, a sword, a cup. In the apocalyptic image of animals, a lion, an eagle, a calf and an angel, the evangelists are represented: Mark, John, Luke and Matthew.

The number of disembodied spirits varies according to the will of the icon painter and the design of the composition. The presence of heavenly forces reveals the theme of serving the Mother of God and worshiping the fact of the immaculate conception of the entire angelic host. Being the center of the iconographic scheme, the Mother of God symbolizes the Church-Sophia - the Wisdom of God, concentrating around itself the forces of earth and heaven.

Burning Bush, icon of the Mother of God, mid-16th century; From the Church of Our Lady Hodegetria in Rostov Wood, gesso, tempera; height 118 cm, width 89 cm In the center of the icon is a half-length image of the Mother of God with the Child in glory. In the corners of the red diamond are images of four apocalyptic creatures. Images of heavenly powers are located in the corners of the green rhombus of glory, as well as in multi-colored segments of ovals with wavy edges inscribed between the corners of the rhombuses. In the four corners of the icon, in the margins, the visions of the Old Testament prophets Moses, Isaiah, Ezekiel and Jacob are presented. State Rostov-Yaroslavl Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve.

The Monk John of Damascus interpreted the image of the Burning Bush as follows:

“The bush was the image of the Mother of God, and God said to Moses, who was about to approach her: “Take off your shoes from your feet...” So, if the land is holy, on which the image of the Mother of God was revealed to Moses, then how many times larger is this image? For he is not only a saint, but, I dare say, even among saints a saint.”

Queen of Heaven, Our Lady, Lady of the Universe, Most Holy Theotokos, undefiled, unblasphemous, imperishable, Most Pure, Pure Ever-Virgin, Mary Bride of God, Mother of the Creator of creation, Lord of glory and Lord of all! Through you the King of kings and Lord of lords has come and appeared to us on earth. You are God's mercy incarnate, You are the Mother of Light and Life, as you once carried Him in Your womb, and in Your arms You had the Child, the Word of the Eternal, God, and thus always have Him with You. For this reason, according to God, we resort to You, as if to an unbreakable wall and intercession: look with mercy, O All-sung Mother of God, on our fierce bitterness, and heal the souls and bodies of our illnesses, drive away from us every enemy and adversary, deliver us from famine, pestilence, ulcers from many waters and harmful airs, and from sudden death; and like the three youths in the cave of Babylon, preserve and keep us, so that, like the people of God of old, all good things will come to us who honor Thee; Let all those who hate us be ashamed and put to shame, and everyone will understand that the Lord is with You, O Lady, and God is with You. In the days of autumn, bring us the shade of Thy grace, but in the darkness of the night, enlighten us with light from above, arranging for everyone; turn our sorrow into sweetness,

Rejoice! The Father has crowned you the Daughter, the Son the Mother the Virgin, the Holy Spirit the Bride, so that you may reign like a Queen, standing at the right hand of the Holy Trinity, and have mercy on us as you wish, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

In what cases is the akathist read?

Since ancient times, the Mother of God in the image of the Burning Bush was considered an intercessor from fire. An akathist read in front of the icon will help protect your home from fire. There are known cases when the flame bypassed a building next to which stood a person holding an icon in front of him.

In addition, people whose profession is associated with sudden fires pray to the holy image: firefighters, as well as military personnel and employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It is believed that the Burning Bush can protect against “military fire”: bombing, shooting. From time immemorial, prayers were offered in front of the icon, asking the Mother of God to protect from various natural disasters: lightning strikes, thunderstorms, storms.

The tradition of praying in front of the Burning Bush icon for protection from fire developed at the beginning of the 19th century and is inextricably linked with the story that occurred in 1822 in Slavyansk (Kharkov province). Fires have become more frequent in this city, which, according to city authorities, were the work of an elusive arsonist. One of the local residents, an old woman named Belnitskaya, had a revelation: the fires would stop after the Burning Bush icon was painted and a prayer service was served in front of it. The old woman told the priest about this, through whose efforts craftsmen were hired and the icon was painted in the shortest possible time.

On the same day, after the liturgy and prayer service in front of the shrine, another fire occurred. However, this time a certain Marfa, a girl not completely mentally healthy, was caught at the crime scene. The prophecy came true - the fires stopped. Since a lightning strike also often becomes an involuntary cause of fire, people often pray in front of the image of the Virgin Mary “The Burning Bush” for protection from natural disasters during a thunderstorm.

On this day, the icon of the Burning Bush was revealed in the oven. This event happened in the city of Yuzha. One of the local residents, while heating the stove, saw the face of the Most Pure Mother of God with the Child in her arms in the fire. When the log was removed from the firebox, it turned out that the copper icon of the Mother of God in Her incarnation as the Burning Bush had “grown” into the wood.
