Canon to the Honest Heavenly Powers of the Bodiless (Archangels and Angels)

Song 1

Irmos: I will open my mouth and be filled with the Spirit, and I will vomit the word to the Queen Mother, and I will appear brightly triumphant, and I will sing, rejoicing, those miracles.

We are always showered with divine lordships, illumine my mind, and praise you, the Archangel of the heavenly armies, the affirmation of all who flow to you.

The pre-eminent mind, the most worldly official of showing the rank of you, the most glorious Archangel, and the light of those in darkness, and the Divine adornment of His Church.

Having preceded the heavenly minds in Dus, you gave protection, and affirmation, and weapons to those who are most dear to Mikhail, quenching and consuming enemies.

Theotokos: All-Immaculate Virgin, like the splendor of angels, the help of men, help me, a sailor who always falls into the storm of sin and is in distress.

Fifth prayer:

O Saint Michael the Archangel, light-shaped and formidable commander of the Heavenly King, before the Last Judgment weaken me, let me repent of my sins, from the net of those who catch me, deliver my soul and bring me to the God who created her, who sits on the Cherubim, and pray diligently for her, so that through your intercession she will to a place of peace. O formidable commander of the Heavenly Powers, representative of all at the Throne of the Lord Christ, steadfast guardian of all people and wise armorer, strong commander of the Heavenly King, have mercy on me, a sinner, Aspiring for your intercession, save me from all visible and invisible enemies, and, moreover, strengthen me from the horror of death and from the embarrassment of the devil and grant me to shamelessly present myself to our Creator at the hour of His terrible and righteous Judgment. O all-holy, great Michael the Archangel, do not despise me, a sinner, who prays to you for your help and intercession, in this time and in the future, but grant me, together with you, to glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

Song 3

Irmos: We do not boast in wisdom and strength and wealth, but in You, the Father’s Hypostatic wisdom, O Christ, who is more Holy than You, the Lover of Mankind.

Divine Fortress, Commander of the all-valid angels, go around the whole earth, taking us away from the cruel ones who call on your Divine name.

As the preacher is divine, as the representative of the faithful is not shameful, you are the guide of those who have gone astray, and you were the punisher, God’s Most God-Seeing Archangel.

You appeared as a pure mirror of Divine radiance, the manifestation of an honest, bright reception of the Spirit, most wonderful to Michael the First Angel.

Theotokos: Immaterial minds formed by will, settled into Your material womb by desire, All-Immaculate One, seen in the flesh by the Unseen.

Canons to Angels for home reading

For home or cell prayer, they use the Kanonnik - a book containing, in addition to other prayers, canons for reading for every day. For correct reading, they are printed in Slavic font with accents. On Monday the Canon to the Ethereal Powers of John the Monk (Damascene) is read. The refrain “Holy Archangels and Angels, pray to God for us!” is pronounced at the troparion.

In the canon of John the Monk, the words of the prayer are addressed to God - the Creator of the Ethereal Forces. In the eighth and ninth cantos, the author calls on people to become like the Angels in purity of life, and to the Ethereal Ones themselves to help with their prayers. The canon is performed as part of Small Compline, placed in the Canon, or before evening prayers.

Parents seeking to guide their children on the true path have a tradition of reading the canon of the Heavenly Powers and All Saints. Such a text can be compiled by combining the canons of the Ethereal Powers and All Saints, the latter can be found in the Octoechos or modern editions of the Prayer Book. At the same time, at each song, irmos and troparia to the Ethereal Powers are read, troparions to saints are added and concluded with one of the Theotokos to choose from. According to the third hymn, the kontakion is read to the saints, and according to the sixth - to the Angels.

Among the monuments of religious creativity, two more canons of the Ethereal Powers are known, which are not used in church practice. Canon to the Angel the Terrible Voivode - this work is attributed to Tsar Ivan the Terrible , who took the pseudonym Parthenius the Holy Fool. The text of the canon is imbued with a repentant mood in anticipation of death. Known to this day among Old Believers. Orthodox Christians are recommended to use the canon only for informational reading.

The Canon to the Guardian Angel “different” (different), compiled by St. John Mavropod (XI century). This work is not included in liturgical books, but is blessed for home prayer and is included in new editions of the Canon.

Theotokos: The Supreme God showed the intelligent angels of Thee, dwelling in Thy falsehood, the Pure All-Immaculate One, pray to Him always, to be generous to the singing Thee.

Origin and purpose of Angels

Angels are the animate creations of God that appeared earlier than the material world. These beings have free will. They could sin, just like man, but they do not do so because of their boundless love for God. Only once did their part, led by the proud star (Satan), fall away from the host of Angels. Having turned into a dark, ungodly force, they are still fighting with the bright servants of God for human souls.

Every fall or circumstances that encourage sin is the result of this war. Experienced Christians know how prayer to the Angels helps and dedicate the first day of the week - Monday - to them. On this day they read one of the canons to the ethereal Heavenly Forces, and some, imitating the monastic tradition, hold an “angelic fast.”

Perhaps it is useful for everyone to know how to read akathists correctly at home.

Akathist to Archangel Michael: when to read the text and listen to the performance

Archangel Michael is a significant person in the heavenly hierarchy, hence the prefix “arch.” The Archangel is highly revered in both Christianity and Judaism, and even Islam. He is the leader of all angels, a fearless fighter who defeated the personification of evil and violence - Lucifer himself.

The Cross of St. Michael was an honorary Russian order during the Civil War, his name could be seen on many banners, and today his image is on the coat of arms of Russia. On the icons, the archangel, revered by military personnel of all ranks, is depicted with a spear and sword as a symbol of victory over enemies.

This laudatory and solemn chant is performed by the mothers of warriors; many people order it in church when they find themselves in difficult life situations and want to ask for protection and support from the archangel.

The Akathist allows the sick to receive healing, get rid of anxiety or grief, and pray for living family members to avoid temptations and for their spirit to be strong.

They also pray for the salvation of the souls of deceased relatives.

The purity of the soul of the person for whom such an akathist is read is important. You need to be a believer, not turn away from the Lord under any circumstances, and then after reading the sacred text a person will certainly receive help. In Orthodoxy, akathists are usually included in the evening service in church.

Each of the seven archangels in the heavenly hierarchy has its own day of the week. It is customary to read the Akathist to Michael on Monday, and also on the days of honoring his memory, which fall on September 19 and November 21. This akathist, like odes of praise to other saints, consists of 25 songs, which are divided into 13 kontakia and 12 ikos.

It must be read correctly: in front of the image of the holy house or in the temple to the east, in the order of execution - the ikos is not sung as an independent song, it must end after the kontakion with the word “Rejoice”, and the kontakion with the word “Hallelujah”.

The last kontakion in the akathist is an appeal to the saint; it must be said three times and ended with a prayer.

The chant is traditionally performed on the eve of holidays and directly on such days; it cannot be read during Lent.

Archangel Michael earned God the title of saint for his fight against Lucifer and the forces of evil; his face has been an invisible protective shield for many years for a large number of believers, and the akathist allows all sincere believers to receive help.

  4. Singing your manifold miracles, Michael, done for our salvation, we pray to the Lord and Master of all, that the spirit of zeal for the glory of God, which is in you, will become scarce in us who call you:
  • Rejoice, you have previously placed faithful servants of God at the right time to the heights of power;
  • Rejoice, thou who invisibly cast down the impudent and unworthy from the heights of power and glory.
  • Rejoice, on the last day you have brethren chosen from the four corners of the earth;
  • Rejoice, even though sinners, like tares, will be given over to eternal fire by the voice of God.
  • Rejoice, for Satan and his angels will be cast into the lake of fire forever;
  • Rejoice, for the righteous will be more gloriously established in the abodes of the Heavenly Father.
  • Rejoice, Michael, great Archangel, with all the Heavenly powers.

Kontakion 13

O wonderful chief of Archangels and Angels, for your wonderful service to the salvation of the human race, accept from us the voice of praise and thanksgiving that is now raised to you and, as if filled with the power of God, cover us with your immaterial wing from all enemies, visible and invisible, so that the one glorified by you and glorified you Let us call to the Lord: Alleluia. (This kontakion is read three times, then ikos 1 and kontakion 1)

Song 8

Irmos: O Savior of all, Omnipotent, in the midst of the flame of your piety, you descended and watered you, and taught you to sing: bless all your deeds, sing to the Lord.

The leader of the mental incorporeal, the prayer book of salvation, the Divine servant of God, Michael, appeared, singing incessantly: bless all deeds, sing to the Lord.

Two all-bright lamps, Michael and Gabriel the Archangels, the Triple-Light Divinity, enlightening creatures with their radiance, driving away the fierce darkness.

Like good helmsmen Archangels, save my spiritual ship, fallen and in distress from the storm of sins, to the haven of the Divine will.

Theotokos: Bride-painter, Divine Archangel, presenting yourself, inviting You, Rejoice, Bride of God, Blessed, Glory of Angels and Salvation and Protection of men.
