History and significance

The akathist was first compiled in Byzantium at the end of the 5th - beginning of the 6th century. This work, the author of which is considered to be the deacon of the great Church of Constantinople, George of Pisidius, was addressed to the Mother of God and consisted of two parts:

  • the first told about the earthly life of the Blessed Virgin;
  • the second was devoted to the doctrine of the Incarnation and the salvation of mankind.

Initially, it was read in a single church: the Blachernae Church of Constantinople in front of the miraculous image of the Mother of God “Hodegetria”.

In those Orthodox churches where services are performed in Greek, the term “akathist” even today refers to only one work - an akathist dedicated to the Mother of God.

In the Russian Orthodox Church it is read once a year during the fifth Week of Great Lent. This service is called “Praise to the Most Holy Theotokos.”

Akathist as a genre began to take shape much later. In the 14th century, in the Byzantine Empire, which at that time was in a state of decline, they began to create works dedicated to holidays or saints and repeating the structure of the text addressed to the Mother of God.

During that period, akathists were written to John the Baptist, St. Nicholas, Archangel Michael, the chief apostles Peter and Paul, the twelve apostles, the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Resurrection of Christ. The “Byzantine” period ended with the compilation of an akathist to the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian.

After the fall of Byzantium in 1453, in a difficult historical situation, fewer akathists were created, and they were devoted mainly to copies of icons of the Blessed Virgin Mary. By this time, this genre was penetrating into Rus', where works dedicated to Russian saints appeared.

Akathist creativity quickly took root and spread in Russia. By the middle of the 19th century, their number had become so large and varied that the practice of checking and approving texts by the Holy Synod was introduced.

WE RECOMMEND: Prayers to Spyridon of Trimythous for prosperity and work.

Those works that did not receive the stamp of the highest body of church government were not allowed to be printed and distributed. The reasons for refusal of registration were as follows:

  • linguistic illiteracy;
  • distortion of theological meanings;
  • duplication of an akathist with an existing dedication.

By 1901, more than 450 akathists were in circulation in the Russian Church. However, only 158 of them were authorized by the Synod for distribution. Church hierarchs were often wary of such a surge in theological activity.

Saint Philaret of Moscow (Drozdov)

We are dissatisfied with our zeal to perform the divine service established by the Church in such a way that nothing is omitted and everything is sung and read slowly and clearly. Isn’t it more necessary, isn’t it more useful to be jealous about this than to expand the service with a multitude of akathists, arbitrarily re-composed from a multitude of vague, refined laudatory expressions, little capable of admonishing and edifying the reader or hearer? Anyone who wants to, every saint for whom he feels zeal, does not find it difficult to write an akathist and give it to the rule of the Church. Is this ok? Is it reasonable that so many ancient great saints, apostles, prophets, martyrs, saints, and saints remain without akathists? But should not the exercise of pious zeal be favored? True, but with much consideration and prudence, in order to bring to the Church of God a gift that is truly useful to it.

During the same period, in 1886, an akathist to St. Spyridon of Trimythous was compiled. Its author was the Moscow priest Alexander Tsvetkov. The author based the content on the life of the saint and liturgical hymns in his honor, which at that time existed in the Russian Orthodox Church.

In the book by A. Popov “Orthodox Russian Akathists, published with the blessing of the Holy Synod. The history of their origin and censorship, features of content and construction” provides a positive response from the censor to the submitted essay.

As follows from its contents, the new akathist was supposed to be read in front of the revered icon of the saint, which was located in the church where Father Alexander Tsvetkov served.

Prayer three:

O blessed Saint Spyridon! Beseech the mercy of God, the Lover of Mankind, that He may not judge us according to our iniquity, but may He deal with us according to His mercy. Ask us, the servants of God (name of the rivers), from Christ and our God for a peaceful and serene life, mental and physical health. Deliver us from all spiritual and physical troubles, from all languor and devilish slander. Remember us at the throne of the Almighty and beg the Lord to grant forgiveness of many of our sins, a comfortable and peaceful life, and grant us a shameless and peaceful death and eternal bliss in the future he will make us worthy, so that we may continually send glory and thanksgiving to the Father and the Son and To the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.
