What is the Easter canon about?
The Easter canon can be considered the central hymn of Matins, one of the main church services. The clergy in the altar begin to sing each hymn of the canon, the choir continues, and at this time the priest with the tricandle and the Cross in his hands and accompanied by a deacon with a candle censes the icons and the worshipers, greeting them with the exclamation: “Christ is Risen!”, to which they answer: “ Truly risen!”
There is a custom when clergy, before going out to perform incense, change their clothes as a sign of joy in the Risen Lord. The clapping and greetings performed by the clergy remind us of the repeated appearances of the Risen Lord to His disciples and of their joy at the sight of the Savior.
The Easter Canon is the creation of one of the Fathers of the Church, theologian, and Christian hymnist - St. John of Damascus. He was born in the second half of the 7th century in Damascus and came from a famous and wealthy family. His father, Sergius Mansur, was a high-ranking official under the Arab caliph, and after his father's death, St. John inherited his position. While still in Damascus, he became famous for his decisive defense of icon veneration and denunciation of iconoclasts.
The life of St. John tells how Leo the Isaurian, emperor of Byzantium, was angry with him for his writings against the iconoclasts, and sent the caliph a forged letter informing him of an allegedly impending conspiracy and the intentions of St. John to overthrow the caliph. For this the saint was imprisoned and his right hand was cut off.
While in captivity, he prayed for a long time before the icon of the Mother of God, and his hand miraculously became whole and healthy. The Caliph learned about this miracle and, after re-examining the case, became convinced of Saint John’s innocence.
In gratitude to the Mother of God, the monk ordered a silver image of a hand and attached it to the icon, which later became known as the Three-Handed One. After this, not having spent long as a courtier, Saint John of Damascus, together with his adopted brother and fellow student Cosmas (Mayumsky), went to the monastery of St. Savva the Sanctified, near Jerusalem, where he remained until the end of his life, engaged in prayerful and literary works.
Nicodemus the Svyatogorets: irmos of the Easter canon
Venerable Nicodemus the Svyatogorets (1749-1809) - Athonite monk, philologist and theologian, worked on the publication of the manuscript of the Philokalia, edited the works of St. Simeon the New Theologian, he himself composed canons and wrote ascetic teachings. One of Nicodemus’s books, “Eorthodromion” (that is, the annual circle of holidays), contains interpretations of the canons of the main holidays of the Church. St. Nicodemus was one of those who revived Orthodox spiritual life and name-glorification in Greece - an impulse that was picked up and brought to Russia by St. Paisiy Velichkovsky.
We offer three fragments from his interpretation of the Easter canon. This poetic canon, the work of St. John of Damascus (675-749), is sung at Easter Matins, and then every day throughout Bright Week and at Sunday services until Easter is celebrated.
Song 1, Irmos
It’s Resurrection Day, let’s enlighten ourselves, people. Easter, the Lord's Easter: from death to life, and from earth to heaven, Christ God will lead us, singing in victory.
Translation: Resurrection day, let's enlighten ourselves, people! Easter, Lord's Easter! for from death to life and from earth to heaven, Christ God has translated us, singing the song of victory.
Interpretation of St. Nicodemus:
A brilliant singer decorates a brilliant day with the brilliant sayings of the most brilliant writer of laudable words, Gregory the Theologian <…>. And it is worthy of surprise that he not only takes from the Theologian the subjects of his sermon, but also uses his expressions verbatim. See, for example: the simple and unadorned beginning of the first song is drawn from his theological source, for in his Homily 1 on Easter and on his own delay he makes this beginning: “The day of the Resurrection,” and then says: “And let us be enlightened by triumph.” And in the Word for Easter he literally writes the following: “Easter, the Lord’s Easter” and again in the same word, interpreting what the word Easter will mean, he says this: “This word (that is, Easter) denotes a transition, historically - flight and resettlement from Egypt to the Canaanite land, and spiritually - the exit and ascent from the lowest to the highest and into the land of promise." So, the singer, having linked these three sayings into one irmos, makes the theme of the previously mentioned creation of the Theologian the theme of his own irmos, saying this: “The day of Resurrection, therefore on this day let us be enlightened, all Orthodox people of the Church.”
Then he accordingly names the reason for such great enlightenment - because it is the Lord’s Passover. The singer repeats the word “Easter” twice in order to show the extreme rejoicing of his soul, for those who rejoice repeat the names of those things and those names that they rejoice in, because the strongest joy prompts them to do so. And the Theologian repeats the word “Easter” three times in honor of the Holy Trinity, as he himself says about it: “Easter, the Lord’s Easter, I will say again - Easter, in order to honor the Trinity.” Accordingly, the singer then gives an interpretation of the word “Easter”, presenting it as the reason why we should be enlightened, and indicates how to be enlightened: in justice, we Orthodox should be enlightened today and celebrate Easter, since the Lord Christ did not transfer us from the earth to the land, that is, from the land of Egypt to the land of promise and from the inhabited place to the desert of Sinai, as He translated ancient Israel, but He translated us from death to life and from the earth and earthly He transferred us to Heaven and heavenly things. Therefore, we sing in this way to the Lord who has blessed us, that truly victorious song that the Israelites sang after crossing the Red Sea: “We sing to the Lord, gloriously we will be glorified” ( Ex. 15:1 ).
Look, beloved reader, and marvel at the wise technique that the divinely inspired singer uses in this irmos, for he composed this irmos both from the theme of Sunday and from the theme of the first song. After he said: “Let us be enlightened, people,” he deliberately used the word “Passover” and called it a transition, in order to thereby make us remember the transition that the Israelites made through the Red Sea, and thus connect the first song with the Passover holiday and give us to understand that that sensual transition of the Israelites was an image of our mental transition and that their Besque was an image of our Passover.
Song 3, Irmos
Come, let us drink new beer; it is not from the stone of barrenness that the miracle works, but from the tomb of the incorruptible source that we wait for Christ, we are established in Him.
Translation: Come, let us drink a new drink, miraculously produced, not from a barren stone, but from the fountain of incorruptibility, which Christ brought forth from the tomb, in whom we are established ( Exod. 17:6; Matt. 20:29 ).
It is puzzling why the singer mentions a new drink in this Irmos, which has no connection with the third song - the song of the prophetess Anna ? To resolve this confusion, let’s say that if we are careful, we will find this irmos corresponding to both the Feast of the Resurrection and the third song of Anna. The name “Kingdom of God” in the Holy Scriptures is used in many meanings; the Resurrection of the Lord is also called this, as the Lord Himself called it, saying: “The Imam will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on, until the day when I drink with you new in the kingdom of the Father.” Mine” ( Matthew 26:29 ), - after all, here He calls His Resurrection the kingdom, according to the interpretation of Chrysostom and Theophylact. So, knowing this, the divinely inspired singer especially calls on us, Orthodox Christians, to drink this new drink that the Lord has promised. And the new drink is truly new, since it renews and makes incorruptible us, who are worn out and corrupted by sin. Since we are resurrected with Christ through faith, it is clear that we are accordingly renewed with Him and together with Him we overcome corruption. Thus, this irmos corresponds to the theme of the Resurrection of the Lord.
The irmos also corresponds to the third song of Anna, since it is written both here: “In Nemzhe we are established,” and in Anna’s song: “Let my heart be established in the Lord” ( 1 Samuel 2:1 ). The irmos is also connected in another way with the third hymn - the hymn says: “Be strong in my heart,” and the irmos speaks of a stone that is the hardest. Therefore, the hymn writer, in order to show the connection of the irmos with the third song of Anna, turns to the ancient history of the book of Exodus, in which it is written that water flowed out of the split solid stone ( Ex. 17: 2-6 ). Therefore he says: “Come, O Christ-loving nations, to drink new water, which renews us and makes us incorruptible, not like that which the people of Israel drank. She, thanks to miracles, flowed out of a barren and hard stone. If it was new because of the wonderful way in which it was poured out, it was not new so as to renew and make incorruptible those who drank from it. So, let us drink not this kind of water, but water from the source of incorruptibility, that is, the water that makes us incorruptible and renews us, the water that the risen Christ today emits from the stone tomb, just as the same Christ emits the former source of corruptible water from the stone. In Him, in Christ, we, the faithful, are established as if on a solid rock and an unshakable foundation, as Paul says: According to the grace given to me by God, like a wise builder, I laid a foundation, and another is building on it; but everyone watch how they build. For no one can lay any other foundation than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ ( 1 Cor. 3:10-11 ).

Song 4, Irmos
On the Divine guard, let the God-speaking Habakkuk stand with us, and let the luminous Angel show us, clearly saying: this is the salvation of the world, for Christ is risen, for he is omnipotent.
Translation: On divine watch, may the God-speaking prophet Habakkuk stand with us and show a luminous Angel loudly proclaiming: “This day is the salvation of the world, for Christ has risen, for He is omnipotent.”
And for the first troparia this singer of Damascus, named after grace, is truly worthy of admiration, and for the real irmos of the fourth canto he is worthy of praise and amazement, because in the first and third cantos he borrowed many sayings from the word for Easter by Gregory the Theologian, and here he retained the very preface of the mentioned words: “I will stand on my guard, says the wonderful Habakkuk.” And Damascene kept these words in order to conveniently and extremely wisely bring the Irmos into line with the fourth song of Habakkuk. Since the interpretation of this troparion is difficult to understand and unclear, for this purpose we should here, at the beginning, talk about the words of Habakkuk and the vision that Gregory the Theologian saw with him, and then interpret the irmos so that its interpretation becomes understandable for everyone.
The Prophet Habakkuk, since he saw that many were tempted by the Providence and judgments of God and thought: as if God neglects the fact that the wicked and unrighteous despise and devour the pious and righteous, he wanted to experience the incomprehensible destinies of God. Therefore, he says: “I will stand on my watch, and I will mount the stone, and I will look to see what (the Lord) speaks to me and what answer I give to my reproof” ( Hab. 2:1 ). The meaning of these prophetic words, according to the interpreter Nikita, is as follows: I want to keep my mind elevated above all worldly cares through sobriety, attention and mental prayer (for the guardians are called sobriety, heartfelt attention and mental prayer), and thus through this mental guard I will ascend, as if on a hard and unshakable stone, to the height of contemplation, and from there, as if from the top of a mountain and a high place, I will reason about what words God spoke to me, and about what I must respond to reproof, that is, to the reproaches of the mentioned offended ones .
Gregory the Theologian coordinated these words of Habakkuk with the theme of the Resurrection, because Habakkuk himself in custody did not mean sobriety of mind and attention, but the dignity and contemplation of the high priesthood given to him. <…> Gregory himself, writing the preface in his homily for Easter, says this:
I will stand on my guard, says the wonderful Habakkuk. I will stand with him now, according to the power and contemplation given to me by the Spirit; I will look and find out what will be shown to me and what will be spoken. I stood and looked: I stood and looked: and behold a man ascended on the clouds, a very tall man, and his image was like the appearance of an Angel... He exclaimed with a loud voice and said: “Now is salvation for the world, the visible world and the invisible world!”
So, the sacred singer borrows the words of both Habakkuk and the Theologian and says: “Prophet Habakkuk, who once stood guard over his mind, let him stand with us today.” He appropriately names the name of Habakkuk in order to show that this song and this canon have as their theme the Resurrection and awakening of the Lord, because the name Habakkuk is translated as the father of awakening. Then he says: “Let Habakkuk (or the prophet himself, or the Theologian speaking on behalf of Habakkuk) show us that shining angel who appeared in spiritual contemplation and said: Today is the salvation of the world.” The hymnographer does not add the remaining words of the angel: “To the visible world and the invisible world,” but omits them, because he said them earlier in the troparion of the first song, when he wrote: “Let the world celebrate, all visible and invisible.” <…>
Why did the singer add at the end of the troparion “For Christ is risen, for he is omnipotent”? In order to show that the Resurrection of Christ surpasses all the limits and laws of nature, and was the work and accomplishment of the omnipotent Deity alone, for whom no work is impossible, for He alone is omnipotent. Paul, showing this, said: According to the work of the might of His strength, what He did for Christ (meaning the Father), raising Him from the dead ( Eph. 1:19-20 ), and again: For even though He was crucified from weakness, He is alive by the power of God ( 2 Cor. 13:4 ), and again: For Christ has risen from the dead by the glory (that is, Divinity) of the Father ( Rom. 6:4 ). Therefore, Chrysostom, explaining the saying of Jacob, Thou art fallen asleep like a lion, and like a monk who awakens Him ( Gen. 49:9 ), says this:
He called His death Dormition and Sleep, and connected Resurrection with death, saying: “Who will awaken Him?” No one else but Himself.
John Chrysostom, Word on the saying “Father, if it is possible.”

Ipakoi, voice 4:
Having anticipated the morning of Mary, and having found the stone rolled away from the tomb, I hear from the Angel: in the light of the ever-present Being, what are you looking for with the dead, like a man? You see the graveclothes, tetsite, and preach to the world that the Lord has arisen, the one who put to death death, as he is the Son of God, saving the human race.

Even before the sun, the Sun sometimes set in the tomb, leading to the morning, looking for the Myrrh-Bearing Virgin like the day, and crying out to friends to friends: O friends! Come, let us anoint the life-giving and buried body with stinks, the flesh of the Resurrected fallen Adam, lying in the tomb. We come, sweating like wolves, and let us worship, and bring peace like gifts, not in swaddling clothes, but in a shroud, to Him entwined, and we weep and cry out: O Master, arise, grant resurrection to the fallen.
Having seen the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the Holy Lord Jesus, the only sinless One, we worship Your Cross, O Christ, and we sing and glorify Your holy resurrection: for You are our God, do we know no other to You, we call Your name. Thus, let sinners perish from the presence of God, and let righteous women rejoice.
The myrrh-bearing woman, in the deep morning, appeared at the tomb of the Life-Giver, found an Angel, sat on a stone, and having preached to them, said to her: Why are you looking for the living with the dead? Why are you crying into the aphids? Go and preach as His disciples.

What prayers should children read?
Many parents who want to prepare their child for the first visit to the temple time it to coincide with Bright Week. At this time, the rules on how to prepare for communion and what to read before the sacrament are simpler. Children do not have to fast and it is easier to remember the text. So, clergy recommend reading 3 prayers:
Our Father - 3 times
Our Father, who art in heaven!
Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as it is in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, just as we forgive our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Am
yin.
Rejoice, Virgin Mary - 3 times
Virgin Mary, Hail, blessed Mary, the Lord is with you, blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, for you have given birth to the Savior of our souls.
Song 4
Irmos : On Divine guard, may the God-speaking Habakkuk stand with us, and show us a luminous Angel, clearly saying: today is salvation for the world, for Christ is risen, for he is omnipotent.
Chorus : Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death and giving life to those in the tombs.
The male sex, as it opened the virgin womb, Christ appeared, as a man, the Lamb was called, blameless, for it is tasteless of filth, our Passover, and as God is true, perfect speech Yes.
Chorus : Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death and giving life to those in the tombs.
Like the one-year-old lamb, the blessed crown of Christ, He willed for all to be slain, the cleansing Passover, and the red package from the tomb, the Sun of righteousness has risen for us.
Chorus : Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death and giving life to those in the tombs.
Our God-father David is galloping before the ark, playing, but the saints of God, having visualized the event, we rejoice divinely, for Christ is risen, for he is omnipotent.
Glory : Having created Adam, Your forefather, Pure, is built from You, and destroy the mortal dwelling with Your death today, and illuminate everything with the Divine splendor of the Resurrection.
And now : Whom you gave birth to Christ, who rose beautifully from the dead, Pure, seeing, kind and blameless in women and red, today for the salvation of all, the Apostles glorify Him rejoicing.
How to prepare for communion on Bright Week
The canon that regulates the rules of communion during Antipascha was created more than 13 centuries ago. This happened during the Council of Trullo in 691. It was there that Rule 66 was created, according to which:

From the holy day of the Resurrection of Christ our God until New Week, throughout the entire week, the faithful in the holy churches must continually practice psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, rejoicing and triumphant in Christ, and listening to the reading of the Divine Scriptures, and enjoying the Holy Mysteries. For in this way we will be resurrected together with Christ and ascended
».
At the same time, minimal preparation for communion after the Easter holidays during Bright Week is required.
- There is no need to fast. Even Jesus Christ, after multiplying the loaves, said: “I do not want to send them away without eating, lest they faint on the way” (Matthew 15:32). After the end of Lent, Christians no longer need additional restrictions. They have already shown their steadfastness on the path to God. Therefore, there is no need to torture yourself unnecessarily and fast the day before.
- Meat is allowed. Moreover, according to the same 66th rule, refusing fast food on Bright Week is a real heresy. According to church canons, priests and laity who refuse meat due to prejudice are anathema. But this rule does not apply to those who simply follow vegetarianism or cannot eat meat for health reasons.
- You need to come to church on an empty stomach. This is the only significant limitation. As Archpriest Valentin Ulyakhin points out, in early Christianity people received communion daily. In the modern world, this is impossible for most lay people. But it is during Bright Week that it is advisable to find time for daily communion from Monday to Sunday.
Communion is open to everyone. There are two equally erroneous opinions. Some believe that before Easter and after the holiday, only the laity who are under penance, as well as sinful people who are trying to atone for their sins, receive communion.
On the one hand, this is true, because it is during Easter week and Antipascha that they can read prayers, take communion and cleanse themselves in church before the face of God, although at other times the path to church is closed to them. But this does not mean that the rest of the laity should refuse to participate in the sacrament.

There is another opinion that on Bright Week some special preparation for communion is required. That a person must be especially pure before reading prayers.
Song 5
Irmos : Let us deepen the morning, and instead of peace we will bring a song to the Lady, and we will see Christ, the Sun of truth, life shining for all.
Chorus : Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death and giving life to those in the tombs.
Your immeasurable compassion, through the bonds of hell, is seen, Christ walks towards the light, with merry feet, praising the eternal Easter.
Chorus : Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death and giving life to those in the tombs.
Let us begin, O luminous visions, that Christ come forth from the tomb as a bridegroom, and celebrate the saving Passover of God with the lustful celebrations.
Glory : Illuminated by the Divine rays and life-giving rays of the Resurrection of Your Son, Most Pure Mother of God, and the pious assembly is filled with joy.
And now : Thou didst not open the gates of virginity in the Incarnation, Thou didst not destroy the seals of the tomb, O King of creation: from now on, seeing Thee risen, Mother rejoiced.
Song 6
Irmos : Thou hast descended into the nether regions of the earth and shattered the eternal faiths that contain the bound ones, O Christ, and thou hast lived for three days like Jonah from the whale, and thou hast risen from the grave.
Chorus : Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death and giving life to those in the tombs.
Having preserved the sign intact, O Christ, Thou hast risen from the grave, the keys of the Virgin unharmed at Thy Nativity, and Thou hast opened for us the doors of heaven.
Chorus : Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death and giving life to those in the tombs.
My Savior, the living and non-sacrificial slaughter, as God Himself brought to the Father by His own will, You co-resurrected the universal Adam, rose from the grave.
Glory : The one who of old held death and corruption, incarnate from Your most pure womb, was raised to the imperishable and everlasting life, Virgin Mary.
And now: You descended into the underworld of the earth, into your womb, the Pure One, who descended and took over, and became incarnate above the mind, and raised Adam with Him, and rose from the grave.
Features of Communion at Easter
Different ministers talk in their own way about the rules of preparation before communion and confession, and explain what prayers need to be read. There were so many discrepancies that in 2015, a bishops' meeting held in Moscow approved special canons.
It is accepted that during this week one should practice singing psalms, reading Divine scriptures, triumphant and rejoicing at the rebirth of Christ. That is, Christians must prepare themselves for communion all this time.
Attention! There is no need to fast during Bright Week after Easter. After midnight, it is enough to refuse food, limit drinking or abstain.
How to prepare for communion during Easter week - recommendations from Abbot Peter
It is obligatory to take communion. I will give the following arguments:
- At the very beginning of the formation of Christianity, people were not allowed to attend the Liturgy without participation in the Holy Sacraments. But, when people began to do more ordinary things, the level of piety began to fall, the Easter canons, on the one hand, became stricter, and on the other, they appeared for lay people and the clergy. It got to the point that they began to receive communion once a year, only on Easter. But ideally, you need to prepare for this, listen to the liturgy, especially on Maundy Thursday, Pentecost, but ideally throughout the year.
- It is advisable to abandon the custom supported by many confessors. They allow people on whom penance has been imposed for grave sins to receive communion on Easter, that is, once a year. Thanks to this, sinners could join in and experience the joy of the Holy Holiday, but this does not mean at all that the sin has already been forgiven. Therefore, an unfounded idea arose that only fornicators and robbers should read prayers before communion on Bright Week in order to come to communion.
No, the Church does not have separate rules for preparing for the Easter night service for sinners and righteous people - everyone receives communion equally. But John Chrysostom, exclaiming, rejoice, calls not to start meals with previously forbidden dishes, but to praise Christ.
- The dishes served on Easter night are a continuation, not a replacement, of the sacrament. Those who do not read the sequence for Holy Communion, but immediately proceed to the meal, can be considered followers of the Old Testament, for these are the traditions of Judaism.
- Some people believe that it is impossible to receive communion on Easter because we begin to eat fast food. But why then do you need to read the Liturgy? This prayer prepares for the end of Lent.
- Many believe that it is enough to read the canons only before communion, which will help to prepare sufficiently. This view is acceptable, but I personally believe (Hegumen Peter) that only those who have led a balanced life all year should receive communion on Easter and perceive communion as a cure for illnesses of the soul.
Attention! Priests should not refuse communion to the laity, despite their sins. We need to look for wise confessors who will help us strengthen our spirit. If this does not happen, then people will hide their sins, or find another, more accommodating shepherd.
Opinion on the preparation of Archpriest Valentin Ulyakhin
He says that the first Christians received communion constantly, they were ready to live for the sake of Christ, and even accepted martyrdom. However, at that time preparation was not compulsory; at that time, a general prayer and sermon, followed by a meal, was sufficient.
There are no regulations or established rules in the Four Gospels, and in the Gospel there are no explanations of how often one should receive communion during the year. Prayer rules based on the Holy Scriptures appeared only in the 4th–5th centuries.
There are other opinions of priests, but they all agree on one thing - on the night after Easter you need to prepare for something great. At this time, you should cleanse yourself of all sinful things and appear before Christ already clean.
Sunday Carol
Having seen the Resurrection of Christ, we worship the Holy Lord Jesus, the One Sinless One, we worship Your Cross, O Christ, and we sing and glorify Your holy Resurrection: For You are our God, and are You We know no other, we call Your name. Come, all you faithful, let us worship the holy Resurrection of Christ: behold, through the Cross joy has come to the whole world. Always blessing the Lord, we sing His Resurrection: having endured crucifixion, destroy death by death. (Three times).
Jesus rose from the grave, as He prophesied, to give us eternal life and great mercy. (Three times).
Song 7
Irmos : He who delivered the youths from the furnace, having become a Man, suffers as if he were mortal, and through the passion of death he clothes the mortal with beauty in incorruption; God alone is blessed and glorified by the Fathers.
Chorus : Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death and giving life to those in the tombs.
Wives from the world, God-wise, follow You in their footsteps: Who was like the dead, with tears of desire, worshiping, rejoicing in the Living God and Your secret Passover, O Christ, the disciple of the gospel.
Chorus : Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death and giving life to those in the tombs.
With death we celebrate the mortification, the destruction of hell, the eternal beginning of another life, and playfully we sing of the guilty, the only blessed father of God and the most glorified.
Chorus : Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death and giving life to those in the tombs.
As truly sacred and all-celebratory this saving night, and the luminous, light-bearing day, the herald of the rising of beings: in it the flightless Light from the grave rose fleshly to all.
Glory : Having put to death Your Son, the All-blameless death, today, to all mortals the abiding life is granted forever and ever, One blessed and glorified Father is God.
And now : Thou reignest over all creation, having been a man, dwelt in Thy, God-gracious womb, and having endured crucifixion and death, was resurrected divinely, having raised us up like the All-Powerful One.
Prayers before communion
Antipascha traditions are slightly different from preparations before communion at other times of the year. The general rule includes three prayer canons that must be read on Bright Week after Easter.
The first among them is the Easter canon. It is read at Matins during the Liturgy. Therefore, there is no need to repeat it separately at home and at other times. It also replaces the reading of the Psalter and 3 canons before communion.
Song 8
Irmos : This is the appointed and holy day, one Saturday is the King and the Lord, the holiday is the holiday and the triumph is triumphs, and let us bless Christ forever.
Chorus : Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death and giving life to those in the tombs.
Come, the new birth of the vine, the Divine joy, in the special days of the Resurrection, let us partake of the Kingdom of Christ, singing Him as God forever.
Chorus : Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death and giving life to those in the tombs.
Lift up your eyes around, O Zion, and see: behold, your children have come to you like a God-bright luminary, from the west, and the north, and the sea, and the east, in you blessing Christ forever.
Chorus : Most Holy Trinity, our God, glory to Thee.
Father Almighty, and Word, and Soul, the three natures united in all hypostases, the Supreme and the Divine, in Thee we are baptized and we bless Thee for all ages.
Glory : You came into the world, the Lord, the Virgin Mother of God, and dissolved the womb of hell, granting us the resurrection of mortals: therefore let us bless Him forever.
And now: Having cast down the whole power of death, Your Son, the Virgin, by His resurrection, like the mighty God, has exalted us and deified us. Moreover, we praise Him forever.

Irmos: Resurrection day, let us enlighten people: Easter, the Lord's Easter! From death to life, and from earth to Heaven, Christ God has led us, singing in victory. | Day of Resurrection - peoples, let us be illuminated by it! Easter, the Lord's Passover - for from death to life and from earth to heaven, Christ God translated us, singing the song of victory. |

Let us purify our senses, and let us see the impregnable light of Christ’s resurrection shining, and rejoice, speaking clearly, and let us hear, singing victoriously. | Let us purify our feelings, and then we will see Christ shining like lightning with the impregnable light of the Resurrection, and, singing the song of victory, we will clearly hear Him telling us: “Rejoice!” |
Chorus: Christ is risen from the dead.
Let the heavens rejoice with dignity, let the earth rejoice, let the world celebrate, all visible and invisible: Christ has risen, eternal joy. | May heaven and earth rejoice, may the whole world – visible and invisible – celebrate, for Christ has risen – eternal joy! |

Irmos : Come, we drink new beer, it is not from the barren stone that the miracle works, but from the incorruptible source, from the tomb that rained Christ, we are established in Nemzhe. | Come, let us drink a new drink - not from a barren rock, miraculously produced, but from the spring of incorruptibility, which gushed after Christ poured out like a shower from the tomb, in whom we are established. |
Chorus: Christ is risen from the dead.
Now everything is filled with light, Heaven and earth and the underworld: let all creation celebrate the rise of Christ, established in Him. | Today everything is filled with light - heaven, earth and the underworld. May all creation celebrate the Resurrection of Christ, by which it was established. |
Chorus: Christ is risen from the dead.
Yesterday I was buried with You, Christ, today I stand with You in resurrection, I was crucified with You yesterday, glorify me Yourself, O Savior, in Your Kingdom. | Yesterday I was buried with You, O Christ, but today, when You have risen, I rise with You; I crucified with You yesterday, and today You Yourself glorify Me, Savior, in Your Kingdom! |

| The wives who were with Mary Magdalene, coming to the tomb before dawn and finding the stone rolled away from it, heard from the Angel: “Why are you looking for one who dwells in eternal light among the dead, as if He were an ordinary person? Look at the ballroom shrouds! Run and tell the world that the Lord has risen, having put death to death by His death, for He is the Son of God, who saves the human race!” |
Song 4.
Irmos : On divine watch, may the God-speaking Habakkuk stand with us and show us a luminous angel, clearly saying: this day is salvation for the world, for Christ has risen, for he is omnipotent. | Let the prophet Habakkuk, who speaks by divine inspiration, stand with us in anticipation of God and show us a luminous Angel, clearly saying: “Today the salvation of the world has been accomplished, for Christ has risen as Almighty God!” |
Chorus: Christ is risen from the dead.
The male sex, as if Christ had opened the virgin womb, was called: like a man, He was called Lamb: and blameless, for the taste of filth is our Passover, and for the true God is perfect in His words. | Christ appeared as a man, born as a child from a virgin womb; He was named Passover and a blameless lamb, as having not tasted filth (sin); and as true God, called Perfect |
Chorus: Christ is risen from the dead.
Like the one-year-old lamb, Christ, the blessed crown for us, was slain for all, the cleansing Passover, and again from the tomb the red sun of righteousness rose for us. | Christ, our blessed crown, according to His will, offered Himself as a sacrifice as a one-year-old lamb - the Passover, which cleanses us; but He again shone for us from the grave - the beautiful Sun of righteousness. |
Chorus: Christ is risen from the dead.
God-father David, galloping before the hay ark, but the holy people of God, seeing the images of the event, rejoice divinely, as Christ is risen, as omnipotent. | Previously, Godfather David rode in joy in front of the Old Testament ark, but now, seeing the fulfillment of prophetic images, * the holy people of God rejoiced divinely, for Christ was risen as Almighty God. |

Let us come, O luminaries, to Christ proceeding from the tomb as a bridegroom, and let us celebrate God’s saving Pascha with lustful rites. | Carrying lamps, let us approach Christ emerging from the tomb, like a bridegroom emerging from the bridal chamber; and we will celebrate, together with the ranks of Angels who love rejoicing, the saving Passover of God. |

Irmos : Thou hast descended into the underworld of the earth and shattered the eternal faiths that contain those bound to Christ, and thou hast risen from the grave for three days, like Jonah from the whale. | You, Christ, descended into the underworld and crushed the eternal bars there that held the souls of the dead bound; and, just as Jonah came out of the belly of the whale, you rose from the grave on the third day. |
Chorus: Christ is risen from the dead.
Having preserved the signs intact, Christ, you rose from the grave, the keys of the Virgin unharmed at your birth, and you opened the doors of heaven to us. | Just as before You did not violate the virginity of the Virgin at Your birth, Christ, so now, keeping the seals intact, You rose from the grave, and thereby opened the gates of Paradise for us. |
