Antipascha - what is it in Orthodoxy and what should not be done on this day?

Almost all words with the prefix “anti” contain some kind of opposition, and in most cases it is negative. Many people don’t know what Antipascha is, so they think that the holiday has a negative connotation, but in fact it is not.

Why is Antipascha called that?

One of the popular questions that relate to this holiday. The name means “opposite of Easter,” but it is worth noting that this does not mean opposition, but an appeal to a holiday that has already passed. On this day, the memory of Christ’s resurrection is renewed, which is why the holiday is also called the “week of renewal.” There are several versions of why the name Red Hill (Anti-Easter) appeared. It is believed that “red” means beautiful, and “mountain” refers to the fact that earlier on this day young people celebrated on the hills, where there is no longer snow.

Psalms before Communion

To ensure that the communion procedure takes place in accordance with church canons and does not violate established regulations, three psalms are also read, numbered 22, 23 and 115. In the first psalm there is an appeal to the Lord, who gave life and guidance on the true path, the greatness of his will and all-embracing mercy are mentioned . The staff and rod of the Lord are mentioned as weapons of defense for the believer:

Psalm 22:

The Lord shepherds (leads) me and does not deprive me of anything. There, in a green place, He settled me and raised me by the still water. He converted my soul, directed me on the path of righteousness for the sake of His name. Even if I walk in the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me: Your rod and Your staff - they have comforted me. You have prepared a table for me in view of my oppressors, You have anointed my head with oil, and Your cup gives me drink as if it were excellent! And Your mercy follows me all the days of my life. And I will dwell in the house of the Lord many days!

Psalm 23:

The Lord's earth and everything that fills it, the universe and all who live in it. He founded it on the seas and built it on the rivers. Who will ascend the mountain of the Lord? Or who will stand in His holy place? The one who has blameless hands and a pure heart, who in his soul was not carried away by vanity and did not swear deceitfully to his neighbor. This one will receive a blessing from the Lord and mercy from God his Savior. Such is the generation of those who seek the Lord, who seek the face of the God of Jacob! Princes, lift up your gates and stand up, everlasting gates! And the King of Glory will enter. Who is this King of Glory? The Lord is mighty and strong, the Lord is mighty in battle. Princes, lift up your gates and stand up, everlasting gates! And the King of Glory will enter. Who is this King of Glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of Glory.

Psalm 115:

I believed and therefore said: I am very broken. I said in my frenzy: every man is a liar. What shall I render to the Lord for all that He has given me? I will accept the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord before all His people. The death of His saints is honorable before the Lord. God! I am Your servant. I am Your servant and the son of Your handmaid. You have broken my bonds. I will offer you a sacrifice of praise and call on the name of the Lord. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord before all His people, in the courts of the house of the Lord, among you, O Jerusalem!

Antipascha - traditions

In churches on this day there is a religious procession with obligatory sprinkling of holy water. At the Liturgy, the Gospel of John and the words of Jesus addressed to the Apostle Thomas are read, which serve as a reminder to people that sincere faith has spiritual vision. When figuring out what Antipascha means, it is worth pointing out folk traditions that were observed unquestioningly in ancient times.

  1. Families gather in the evening for a family dinner, and it was believed that the more plentiful the food and the more pleasant the atmosphere, the luckier the year. If you are interested in what is being prepared for Antipascha, then there are no restrictions.
  2. On this day, girls traditionally tell fortunes by candle flames to find out whether they will get married this year. The candle must be lit and placed on a slightly open window. If it burns completely and does not go out, it means that the girl will soon receive a marriage proposal. When the candle went out, they believed that she had another year to walk alone.
  3. When figuring out what Antipascha is, it is worth pointing out that this holiday is considered a youth holiday among the people. Guys and girls went out into the street and had fun festivities. They definitely called for spring. One of the girls was decorated and led around the village as the personification of the awakening of spring.
  4. Krasnaya Gorka is the first day after Lent when weddings can take place. It is believed that this is the best day of the year for a wedding.

Anti-Easter - what not to do?

On this holiday it is necessary to go to church. Krasnaya Gorka is considered the main memorial day, so funeral liturgy is held in churches. The clergy say that it is better to go to church on this day than to the grave. When figuring out what to do on Antipascha, it is worth mentioning the possibility of conducting matchmaking and weddings. In addition, people welcome spring and have fun. There is a certain list of things that are prohibited on this holiday:

  1. Many people are interested in whether they go to the cemetery on Antipascha, so this is not prohibited, but you cannot clean it there. It is recommended to remove trash and plant flowers before this day.
  2. You cannot drink alcohol and say: “for the kingdom of heaven.” It is forbidden to hold feasts at people’s graves and it is better to remember them at home. The Church does not allow commemoration of the deceased with strong alcoholic beverages.
  3. Red Hill is a holiday of fun, so you cannot do household chores and it is recommended to postpone them. It is believed that everything planted on this day will not be accepted.
  4. Guys and girls are not allowed to stay at home on this holiday, as they will remain alone for the whole year.
  5. You should not tell anyone about the ritual of washing icons, as you can turn away your luck.
  6. It is believed that if you quarrel with someone on this day, you will not be able to improve your relationship until Trinity.

What do they give out in church for Antipascha?

On this day, in churches and monasteries they distribute pieces of bread called artos (whole prosphora). It is in a prominent place in churches throughout Bright Week, and when all the Easter celebrations are over, pieces are distributed to the believers. Understanding what is distributed on Antipascha, it is worth noting that particles of this bread are used only on special occasions, as a spiritual remedy for illnesses and infirmities. When a person eats artos, he must definitely say “Christ is Risen!”

How to prepare for communion on Antipascha?

Although there is no fasting during Bright Week, it is recommended to fast before communion. At this time, in most cases, communion is given to people who come from places where there are no churches, are very ill, or are planning to undergo surgery. It is believed that if an ordinary person at this time has a strong desire to take communion, then this is a manifestation of dark forces. In preparation for Communion on Antipascha, it is necessary to read the prescribed three canons, morning and evening prayers, and also follow to Communion.

Obligatory prayers at the end of Holy Week

Despite the fact that God is in the soul and hears not only in church, but also wherever the convert is, before communion it is better to visit church after conversion at home. But even at home, special appeals to the Creator are pronounced in the ancient Church Slavonic language - repeating the same way as for several centuries. At this time, more than ever, it is necessary to follow generally accepted traditions.

On the eve of communion, they repeat 3 canons from the main “Rules for Holy Communion” - the names have already been mentioned - concluding with prayers for the coming sleep. In the morning they repeat:

  • verses - “Although, O man, eat the Master’s Body, approach with fear, so as not to be burned: for there is fire, drinking the divine Blood for communion, first of all, reconcile with those who saddened you”...
  • the first prayer of Basil the Great;
  • the second - John Chrysostom;
  • the third - Simeon Metaphrastus and his fourth.

They also repeat 6 more addresses of the Saints: John of Damascus, Basil the Great, Simeon the New Theologian - the seventh, eighth, ninth, again of Saint John of Damascus and the last - John Chrysostom. Perhaps the priest will want to introduce something new, rearrange the latest addresses, taking into account what is happening in a given period of time, add something of his own to the service.

Attention! The parishioners themselves, when reading prayers, must adhere to church rules.

During Communion, you must first mentally recite the verses - Behold, I begin Divine Communion. To the creator, do not scorch me with communion: For thou art a fire, unworthy of scorching. But cleanse me from all defilement, and then: “Thy secret supper this day” and troparia - you have sweetened me with love, Christ, and you have changed me through your Divine zeal...

Signs for Antipascha

For a long time, this day was used to determine how the year would pass, what the period from the beginning of May to the end of summer was preparing, and they received a lot of other information. If you are interested in information about Antipascha - what it is, and what signs are associated with this day, then the following list will be useful:

  1. Whoever is the first family member to see the sun rise will be the happiest during the year.
  2. If the Antipascha holiday has arrived, then in order to attract good luck to yourself, you need to feed seven stray animals.
  3. On this day, hearing a bell ringing is a good sign, as it can drive away illnesses and ward off misfortunes.
  4. Rain on Krasnaya Gorka foretells a cool and rainy summer.
  5. If a deep plate breaks on this day, then this portends great luck. They say that this is a harbinger of an imminent addition to the family.
  6. A star-studded sky means the cold weather will continue for some time.
  7. A person who, after waking up, hears the singing of birds will be happy all year.
  8. A couple who gets married on Krasnaya Gorka will always be together.
  9. A girl who washes herself with rain on this day will remain young and beautiful for a long time.

To whom and how to read

The clergy pay the most attention to parishioners who have just embarked on the path of righteousness - they are not accustomed to lengthy readings and do not quite understand the meaning of the prayer in Communion and any others. The same applies to sick people or children.

For certain categories of parishioners, the priest individually decides how appropriate it would be for them to begin a spiritual path along with complex and lengthy prayers. In some cases, instead of akathists and strict canons, it is allowed to read other, shorter and simpler prayers from different prayer books.

The standard rule for reading and saying prayers in Russian consists of the penitential canon for Jesus Christ, the prayer canon for the Mother of God and the Guardian Angel, and the obligatory reading - Following to Holy Communion. The Three Canons are read on the day before the liturgy, usually Saturday - since the canons are usually read at Little Compline, which is performed in the evening before the liturgy.

For example, a layman decided to celebrate Communion on Sunday. This means that throughout the entire Saturday before he must read the three main canons. It is worth noting that it is not too labor intensive, especially if you read it intermittently - the church allows this practice. Even with very slow reading, one prayer for Holy Communion does not take more than fifteen minutes, all three canons - from 30 to 40 minutes.

Conducting Communion without fasting and prayer preparation is permitted in the event of a threat of death for any person - in such cases, only communion and confession of the dying person are important.

Conspiracies for Antipascha

On this day, you can perform different rituals, the main thing is to do it alone and secretly from others. There are Anti-Easter conspiracies for money, wish fulfillment, love, beauty and many others. Let's look at a couple of them:

  1. At will. It is necessary to purchase the “God Grant” icon, which depicts Jesus Christ on the throne. If you cannot find it, then you can use the image of the Lord Almighty. Wash the icon with water, holding it over a basin to collect the flowing liquid. During this, you need to repeat plot No. 1 three times. After this, you need to wash yourself three times with the water remaining in the basin, and pour the remains under a young tree near the house.
  2. For wealth. The same ritual can be used to improve your financial situation; you only need to read plot No. 2 three times.

How to prepare for communion before the Nativity Fast

It is believed that before communion there is a three-day strict fast. But this is just a wish and concerns mainly those who participate in the Eucharist twice or thrice a year. Communion before fasting does not require additional abstinence.

Priests recommend taking communion every Sunday. This way you can remain pure and holy. It is advisable to fast every Wednesday and Friday. Immediately before the Eucharist they fast, the day before they pray all day, and abstain from entertainment, alcoholic drinks and carnal pleasures.

Prayers for Antipascha

This church holiday has enormous power and you can use it to your advantage. It is believed that sincere prayers said on this day will certainly be heard. Antipascha in Orthodoxy is a great time to turn to the Lord to ask for a solution to your problems and show gratitude. Prayers addressed to the Lord will help you find peace of mind and harmony within yourself. The presented text must be recited at dawn, repeating it at least three times.

Communion of the laity in the Old Believers

Most Old Believers receive communion once a year - during strict Lent and after confession. There is also a pious custom of receiving communion five times a year:

  • During the first and seventh weeks of Lent;
  • In the Lent of Saints Peter and Paul;
  • During the Assumption and Nativity fasts.

However, in some parishes, more frequent communion is also practiced: outside of fasting, at the discretion of the spiritual father.

How to prepare for confession during the Nativity Fast

With each confession a person approaches the Kingdom of Heaven. During the Nativity Fast, which will be held until January 6, it is necessary to seriously prepare for it, discover the secrets of evil hidden in the soul, tell God about them and repent. The Holy Fathers say:

- Each sin requires either proportionate repentance, or each sin will be followed by proportionate torment.

To avoid torment, you need to bring repentance as great as sin. If he is big, you need to cry for him, ask for penance, and bow to the ground. If it is small, it is enough to repent and do everything possible so as not to sin again. Without repentance, sins will not be forgiven by God.

In preparation for confession, it is necessary to remember all sins. Confessed before Christmas and Great Lent, weddings, taking holy orders, and operations. It is necessary to remember the actions, words, thoughts that deprived God of God's grace. Before confession, you can read books with commandments, describing the state of the human soul. In confession, you can ask a priest for advice on how to overcome sins, what needs to be done. What the priest said during confession is not told to anyone.
