Features and history
The five-numbered prayers addressed to the Blessed Virgin Mary are not suitable for all believers. They are usually read by monks or people close to the monastic lifestyle. This is due to the fact that this is a special type of petition, which is pronounced only after receiving a blessing from the priest. This is how they differ from the more common prayers available to most believers.
Ordinary people do not need to think about increasing the number of prayers counted. They must focus on attention, faith and reverence while reciting the sacred texts. The fifth prayers may sometimes be recited by the congregation. But they cannot replace standard texts.
Dmitry Rostovsky is considered the creator of the Five-Numbered Prayers, who composed them according to the vision of an elder. They were created in memory of the sorrow that the Mother of God endured.
Dmitry Rostovsky devoted his entire life to serving the Lord. He was born into a Christian family that lived near Kiev in the village of Makarov. He graduated from the Kiev-Mohyla Academy and received good knowledge of foreign languages. After graduating from the academy, the young man went to serve at the Cyril monastery. Here he got his name Dmitry.
The last years of Dmitry's life were associated with the Rostov parish, where he ended up during the reign of Peter the Great. He supported Peter's initiatives, but distinguished between state and church affairs. After his death, Dmitry was buried in the Rostov church.
A real miracle was that during the renovation of the church in the middle of the 18th century, the incorrupt body of the monk was discovered. And this despite the fact that the papers, walls and the house itself became damp and fell into disrepair. Among the papers found, the Five-Numbered Prayers were discovered. More specific information about their creation has not reached our days.
Some time after its discovery, the remains of the saint’s body began to heal sick people. Therefore, the monk was canonized.
Many believers especially revere the works written by Dmitry during his life. These include the Five-Numbered Prayers to the Most Holy Theotokos. Prayer requests to the saint are said to heal eye diseases and lung problems.
To obtain permission from the priest to read Dmitry’s texts, you need to understand in what cases such a petition can be read.
The Five-Number Prayers are said on the following occasions:
- the person is in a difficult mental state (despondency and many everyday problems);
- when a person finds himself in the power of sins and cannot cope with them on his own;
- when relatives and friends turn away from a person;
- with foul language;
- with prolonged non-attendance to church and avoidance of communion.
It is necessary to recite the texts of these prayers with deep faith, even in a state of despondency and mental tossing. Only in this case, a prayer service will help remove a heavy burden from the soul, look at problems in a new way, and find the optimal solution for them, as well as find peace and tranquility.
Today, the Five-Number Prayers occupy an ambiguous position in Christianity. They have not yet received the approval of the Church. However, they were not rejected by her either. Therefore, special permission is required to read them, since for ordinary believers, in most cases, more familiar prayer texts are suitable.
The Power of Prayer for Believers
Offering prayers can be called a sacrament. After all, with the help of prayer texts, a person communicates with the Almighty. Of course, not all prayers are addressed specifically to the Lord. There are also those with the help of which believers turn for help to patron saints, protective angels, the Mother of God and Jesus Christ. All of them are very powerful and effective, but only if a person really believes in their power.

It is noteworthy that there are many types of prayers that most have not even heard of. And we are not talking about people who are far from religion and the true God. Even those who regularly attend church and offer prayers to heaven may not be aware of the existence of the fifth prayers, which we will talk about in more detail.

Rejoice, you who received gifts and worship from the Magi-kings. Rejoice, for you have found among your teachers your Son and God. Rejoice, for Your Nativity has risen gloriously from the dead. Rejoice, you who saw your Creator ascending; you yourself ascended to Him with soul and body.

Secret prayers
As was written above, every prayer is a conversation with heaven. By turning to higher powers, a person is free to ask for mercy and the fulfillment of his innermost desires. If he leads a righteous lifestyle, and his request is sincere and kind, then the Almighty will definitely hear it. And therefore, it is not difficult to assume that the fifth prayers exist in order to give a person the opportunity to enter into dialogue with the Lord.
However, this statement is only half true. In fact, such prayers are quite special. According to legend, they were recorded by Saint Dmitry of Rostov. He did not invent them, but wrote them down from the words of another person. One day an elder came to him and reported that he had a vision in a dream. Having told the saint about this, he asked him to write down this vision.
Later it became clear that these prayer requests were dedicated specifically to the Virgin Mary. More precisely, all the sorrows that the Mother of God had to endure. And therefore it is customary to use these prayers only in certain circles and situations.
Lord's Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Third prayer
Undefiled, Unblessed, Imperishable, Most Pure, Unbridled Bride of God, Mother of God Mary, Lady of Peace and My Hope!
Look upon me, a sinner, at this hour, and from Thy pure blood Thou hast unknowingly given birth to the Lord Jesus Christ, make me merciful through Thy motherly prayers;
The one who was ripeningly condemned and wounded in the heart with the weapon of sadness, wound my soul with Divine love!
The mountaineer who mourned him in chains and abuse, grant me tears of contrition; With His free conduct to death, my soul was seriously ill, free me from illness, so that I may glorify You, worthily glorified forever.
Amen.
Reading the fifth prayers
Now it’s time to return to the question of when these prayers are supposed to be read. After familiarizing themselves with the history of the appearance of these prayers, many could guess that they were intended specifically for church ministers. Those who were the first to find the texts of prayers after the death of Dmitry of Rostov came to the same conclusion. The abbots considered that these prayers could only be used by those who are in the service of the Lord. And this is a completely logical conclusion. Because their author did not want them to become widespread. Otherwise, Dmitry Rostovsky himself would have shared his prayers with his flock. But this did not happen, so the highest church leadership decided not to distribute these texts.
It is noteworthy that the prayers of five are very often used by nuns. In their appeals to the Mother of God, they pray for intercession and ask that she enlighten and help find a way to reason with non-believers and turn their hearts to faith. However, in some cases, these prayers are still used by people who have absolutely nothing to do with the church service.
Often prayer texts are used:
- people who have committed a grave sin;
- believers who use foul language;
- people who suffer greatly and cannot find peace of mind.
However, it is necessary to immediately make one important caveat. The fact is that you cannot use the prayers, the texts of which will be presented in the article, at your own discretion. For many, this can be a real discovery. After all, believers can use most prayers at their own discretion. In other words, they do not need any permission. But prayers of five are an exception to the rule.
