Epiphany, which is celebrated annually on January 19, is one of the main Christian holidays, which has been celebrated since apostolic times.
On this day, Orthodox churches perform a festive liturgy and the great blessing of water. Believers offer special prayers that briefly describe the events of the Baptism of Jesus Christ, and also ask God to grant strength for spiritual cleansing and the preservation of such purity.
Prayer for the healing of a child
While the child himself cannot yet turn to the Almighty, relatives, for example, mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, can pray for his health. The following prayer can be read both at home and in church; it will help the little man recover. She addressed Panteleimon the Healer:
Intercessor and Healer, Panteleimon the Great Martyr. In a prayer of repentance I turn to you, just don’t refuse to help me.
May my child be healed of evil, and may grace rush to him from above. I beg you, cast off all shackles, scabs, illnesses and secret angers.
Let the mercy of Christ happen quickly, and let my child not languish. If I have guilt for my child, let her retreat as soon as possible.
Let it be so.
Amen.
Also, for the health of children, you can voice this simple prayer, which is easy to remember:
Lord Jesus Christ, let Your mercy be on my children (names), keep them under Your roof, cover them from all evil, take away every enemy from them, open their ears and eyes, grant tenderness and humility to their hearts. Amen.
Despite its simplicity, it is very effective.
PRAYERS ON THE DAY OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD.
Epiphany
is a Christian holiday celebrated in honor of the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River by John the Baptist on January 19. During baptism, according to the Gospels, the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in the form of a dove. At the same time, a Voice from Heaven proclaimed: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Feast of the Epiphany
otherwise called
Epiphany
, because on this day there was the appearance of the Most Holy Trinity and, in particular, the appearance of the Divine Savior, who solemnly entered into the Salvific Ministry.
Feast of the Epiphany
celebrated in churches in the same way as the feast of the Nativity of Christ.
The day before, the Royal Hours, the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great and the All-Night Vigil are celebrated, beginning with Great Compline. The peculiarity of this Holiday is made up of two great blessings of water, so-called in contrast to the small one, for the small blessing of water can be performed at any other time.
The first great blessing of water takes place on the eve of the holiday in the temple, and the second - on the holiday itself in the open air on rivers, ponds, and wells.
First,
in ancient times, it was performed for the baptism of catechumens and, subsequently, turned into a remembrance of the Baptism of the Lord;
Second
It probably came from the ancient custom of Jerusalem Christians, on the day of Epiphany, to go out to the Jordan River and here remember the baptism of the Savior.
This is why our Epiphany procession is called the procession to the Jordan.

“I am baptized in You, O Lord, in the Jordan”
On January 6/19, the Church celebrates the Epiphany of the Lord. We offer readers of the website Pravoslavie.Ru a theological and philological commentary on the troparion and kontakion of this holiday.
“Then Jesus comes from Galilee to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him” (Matthew 3:13).
The Baptism of the Lord God and Our Savior Jesus Christ in the Orthodox tradition is often called the Feast of the Epiphany.
By turning our attention to the Holy Scriptures, which describe the events associated with the Baptism of Jesus Christ, you and I can see how the Lord clearly and clearly, obeying the laws of human nature, accepted Baptism on the Jordan River. This event was accompanied by wonderful natural phenomena: the water in the Jordan River stopped, then the heavens opened, and the voice of the Heavenly Father was heard, and the Holy Spirit was seen like a dove.
Thus, the appearance of the Holy Trinity during the Baptism of the Lord is the reason for the name of the holiday - Epiphany.
The appearance of the Holy Trinity during the Baptism of the Lord is the reason for the name of the holiday - Epiphany
The Epiphany of the Lord is one of the great, permanent twelve feasts. This great celebration in the Orthodox Church is celebrated with grandeur equal to the Nativity of Christ[1]. Both holidays, united by Christmastide, constitute one majestic and soul-saving celebration[2].
The central and most famous liturgical chants of this holiday are, of course, the troparion and kontakion.
In Church Slavonic they sound like this.
Troparion:
“In the Jordan I am baptized to You, O Lord, the Trinitarian adoration appeared: for the voice of your parents testified to You, calling Your beloved Son, and the Spirit in the form of a dove, the affirmation known to your words. Christ our God appears, and the world is enlightened, glory to Thee.”
Kontakion:
“Thou hast appeared this day to the universe, and Thy light, O Lord, has appeared upon us, in the minds of those who sing Thee: thou hast come, and thou hast appeared, the unapproachable Light.”[3]
The Russian translation of the troparion and kontakion is as follows.
Troparion:
“At Your Baptism in the Jordan, Lord, the worship of the Trinity was revealed: for the voice of the Parent testified of You, calling You beloved Son, and the Spirit in the form of a dove confirmed His words as immutable. O Christ the God who appeared and enlightened the world, glory to Thee!”
Kontakion:
“You appeared on this day to the universe, and Your light, Lord, was imprinted on us, in the fullness of knowledge praising You: “You have come, You have appeared, the unapproachable Light!”
Jordan River
The Troparion of the Baptism of the Lord begins with a mention of the Jordan River, on which a great event took place, committed by the Savior as an example, so that everyone who believes in Him would be baptized with water and the Spirit and have eternal life: “I am baptized in Thee in the Jordan .
Paying attention to the grammar of the Church Slavonic language, you can notice that the participle “being baptized” and the pronoun “You” are in the dative case. This is a Church Slavonic phrase called “dative independent”. It should be translated into Russian as follows: “When You were baptized in the Jordan” or “At Your Baptism in the Jordan.”
The Gospel of John the Theologian (John 1:28) indicates the place where the Baptism of the Lord took place - Bethabara (Greek Βηθαβαρᾶ, Βηθααβαρά, Βηθαβαρά; Hebrew house, place of crossing). It is believed that during the earthly life of Jesus Christ, there was a crossing of the Jordan in this place, which was used by pilgrims from Galilee who went to Jerusalem through Transjordan, bypassing Samaria[4]. We don't know the exact location.
Trinity Worship
The Holy Scriptures, which describe the event of the Baptism of the Savior, clearly show us the most important event for the entire Christian world - the appearance of the Holy Trinity.
In the New Testament, the mystery of the Holy Trinity is revealed three times: in Baptism, Transfiguration and the Descent of the Holy Spirit.
True worship of God was revealed to people, the hitherto unknown secret of the Trinity of the Divine was revealed
Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth, “wonderful counselor, ruler of the world,” first reveals Himself to humanity in Three Persons: God the Father – with His voice; God the Son - Baptism in the Jordan; The Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove.
That is why the troparion of the holiday says that on the specified day “Trinity worship (opened) . True worship of God was revealed to people, the hitherto unknown secret of the Trinity of the Divine, the secret of God, One in three Persons, was revealed.
Spirit in the form of a dove
In the Baptism of the Savior the great secret of his ministry is revealed. This is indicated by the words of the Heavenly Father: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17).
Two people heard these words: the Lord Himself and John the Baptist. The content of the words referred only to Jesus. But the Forerunner in this testimony was finally convinced that this is truly the Son of God, the Messiah, who came to save the world.
The descent of the Holy Spirit, based on the text of the troparion, can be said to be a kind of seal that completes the action, putting an end to and confirming the truth of this great mystery of the Epiphany.
The word “izvestvovashe” is a form of the verb “izvestvovati” , which means “to confirm or testify”[5]. The Holy Spirit confirmed the words of the Heavenly Father, who said: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Appearance of the Lord
Reading the kontakion of the Baptism of the Lord, one can notice the following feature: in the troparion the words of the text are addressed to the Son of God, whereas when in the kontakion there is no address to any person of the Holy Trinity. The text of the kontakion of the holiday is addressed to God - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
The text of the kontakion of the holiday is addressed to God - the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
“light of the banner” is noteworthy . It can have several interpretations, since the verb “znameni” has many meanings[6].
This verb means “to put a mark, stamp or seal.” Divine grace, which many holy fathers associate with light, puts the seal of the Holy Spirit on Christians during Baptism, thereby separating them from worldly people and at the same time including them in the Church of Christ.
The verb can also mean “to sanctify”[7]. Then the interpretation of the troparion can be this: God, in His ineffable mercy and love, gives His only begotten Son to death, “so that whoever believes in him may have eternal life” (John 3:16). Christ, having come to the Jordan, received Baptism from John, thereby showing us the way, illuminating us with the light of His Divine grace, and pointed us to Baptism by water, so that we, having been baptized, would be sanctified and partake of this great mercy - God's grace.
Delving deeper into the interpretation of the kontakion, one can understand that the author concluded in a few lines the most important thing - the meaning of the feast of the Epiphany of the Lord: the salvation of all humanity through the appearance of an unapproachable light, so that all believers, seeing this light, would come to meet Him.
The adjective “impregnable” means “unchangeable or indestructible”[8].
Accordingly, God, who appeared to us during the Baptism of the Son of God in the Trinity, appears as an unchanging light on which people should place their trust, realizing that this light is a reliable and only guide to eternal bliss.
