The life of Vasily Ryazansky and how the saint helps, prayers and where the relics are located

The life of Vasily Ryazansky cannot be called simple and full of joys, but he endured all trials steadfastly and was distinguished by wisdom and kindness. He is revered in Christianity as a holy miracle worker; more than once he happened to perform miracles. Prayers to Vasily Ryazansky help get rid of bad thoughts and stress, and help you find peace of mind.

Life of Saint Basil of Ryazan

Saint Basil, as the fourth bishop of Ryazan, is mentioned in the Laurentian Chronicle. Unfortunately, little is known about him: the first description of his life was compiled only in the 16th century by the monk Ermolai, a famous publicist.

it is known that Vasily Ryazansky was tonsured in Murom and there after some time he was ordained a bishop. According to the biography, Prince Georgy Yaroslavovich took part in this.

After a while, residents accused the bishop of shameful and unworthy behavior: many saw a barefoot and half-naked girl enter his room. The devil himself decided to undermine people's faith in the bishop. Fierce people asked Vasily to be executed, but he asked to be given until 3 am.

Vasily Ryazansky spent the whole night in prayer, performed a night vigil, served a liturgy and prayer service before the miraculous icon of the Mother of God, and then at 9 o’clock in the morning he went out to the Oka River and spread the bishop’s robe over the water. Then he stopped on the canvas, holding the icon of the Mother of God in his hands, and floated, as if on a raft, to ancient Ryazan, the capital of the principality of the same name. In Ryazan it was already 3 o’clock in the afternoon, just in time for Vespers, although the distance between the cities was more than 200 km.

A legend has been preserved that the Ryazan priest who was officiating the service could not possibly initiate it. He remained silent until the Lord warned him. The priest predicted that the righteous Bishop Basil, whom they were supposed to worship, would soon come to them.

The department was also moved to the city, and when it was destroyed, it moved to Pereyaslavl-Ryazan (present-day Ryazan). A perfect miracle was often depicted on icons.

The saint was loved and revered by the laity. His memorial days are June 23 and July 16.

First prayer

Our God-chosen High Hierarch and saint of Christ, Basil, shone with the holiness of your life, the wonderful navigation on the waters and the incorruptibility of your relics, stand before the throne of the Almighty and have great boldness towards Christ our God! We humbly pray to you, with tenderness of heart, pray to the Lord to add His mercy to us, sinful and unworthy servants of His, the shepherd of the Church, may he give love for mankind and zeal for the salvation of his flock: may the mayor and judges fear God, righteousness and selflessness, warrior patience, courage and victory over enemies: mutual love between spouses, fidelity, like-mindedness and stewardship, I will buy honesty and uprightness for the workers, hard work and sobriety for the farmers, charity for the orphans, healing for the sick, intercession for the offended, justification for the slandered, and for all the people of your flock, everything they need for temporal and eternal life. Above all, pray to the Lord, our prayer book, to forgive us every sin, voluntary and involuntary, and to cleanse us from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit: to deliver us from the snares of the age-old enemy, the hater and murderer, and to save us from human slander, and to confirm us in the true saving faith and unfeigned piety: may he keep from vanity and the soul-destroying teachings of the flattering spirits who act in this world in the sons of disobedience, may he protect our hearts from the reds of this world, and may he teach us to avoid carnal lusts and passions, to be wise on heaven, and not on earth. Pray, our Father, to the All-Holy and Divine Spirit, that the light of His grace may shine upon our brothers according to the flesh, who sit in the darkness of false faith, and may they come to know Christ, the true God, the only Savior of all people: may this light shine upon those wandering on the crossroads of schism, may they come to their understanding and they will come into the enclosure of the Orthodox Church, in which alone the eternal salvation of the faithful is undoubtedly accomplished. O Saint of Christ, our prayer book! Pray to Christ God and His Most Pure Mother, that he may abolish enmity and discord, and unite us all with brotherly, God-like love, so that in peace and unanimity, with a burning desire for salvation, working for the Lord, bearing each other’s burdens, we fight a good deed, we will end the current and reach the quiet refuge of the Kingdom of Heaven, and we glorify the ineffable love for mankind and mercy of our Savior, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, with His Beginning Father and the Most Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

Troparion to Saint Basil, Bishop of Ryazan

Troparion, tone 4

First in Murom, you were honored with holiness, from whom we were unjustly expelled, onto the mantle, as if you had ascended on a light ship, on which, more than by nature, as if you were incorporeal, creating a procession on the waters, guided by the providence of the Most High and the intercession of the Mother of God, you reached the God-saved city of Ryazan, and in it We will take over the throne of the bishops, You have preserved the goodness of the God-given flock of Ryazan, Our Hierarch Father Basil, pray to Christ God to save our souls.

Meaning and veneration in Orthodoxy

Vasily Ryazansky spent his entire life righteously and peacefully, trying to help people and instruct them on the path of faith. He often communicated with parishioners and gave them advice in difficult life situations. Thanks to her kindness, meekness and humility, she enjoyed the love of people both during life and after death. It is no coincidence that after almost 3 centuries his relics did not want to leave the walls of the temple, fearing that their enemies would outrage them.

Today he is the patron saint of Ryazan, to whom local residents often turn to with prayers. He is also considered the patron saint of travelers, especially sailors and those who move on water.

But what it is best known for is the test of faith. Deceived, standing in front of an angry crowd, he made no blind excuses and begged for mercy. Believing in the righteousness of the Lord and his intercession, Vasily boldly stepped on the bishop's cloak and swam, proving his innocence by a perfect miracle.

Location of the relics of St. Basil of Ryazan

After his death, the saint was buried in the Ryazan Boris and Gleb Cathedral. At first, his remains were located inside the temple, but due to reconstruction they ended up outside its walls. Local residents did not forget the saint and took care of his icon. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, in complete crisis, Archbishop Theodoret, fearing the destruction of the sanctuary, tried to protect it.

The incorrupt relics were discovered on June 20, 1609. They were taken to the Assumption Cathedral (Nativity of Christ) and placed in the left choir under the bunks. The kontakion and troparion were written at the same time. During Soviet times, believers saved them from ruin and returned them to the temple in the early 1990s.

But the miraculous icon that the bishop carried with him disappeared. Only a few copies remained of it, which until recently were also considered lost. In 2002, one was miraculously found, which is located in the Assumption Cathedral in the summer, and in the Nativity of Christ in the winter.

What do they ask the saint for?

People turn to Saint Ryazan in various difficult situations. He is known as the patron of the downtrodden and oppressed, a wise advisor and protector of the disadvantaged.

In his prayers he faces the following problems:

  1. About guiding those who are lost and unable to find the path of faith to the true path.
  2. About peace and tranquility, about strengthening faith and peace of mind.
  3. About resilience in overcoming life's adversities.
  4. Get rid of bad thoughts and stress.
  5. About getting support in a difficult situation, about help in making a difficult decision.
  6. Wisdom and patience, which will be useful in the fight against evil and injustice.

In addition, travelers, especially those traveling by water, often turn to the saint for protection.

Venerable Euphrosyne, Grand Duchess of Moscow

Human slander and slander called into question the chastity of Saint Euphrosyne, which offended her sons. But they were horrified when they saw the thinness of her body and her completely withered skin from excessive abstinence.

Prayer to the Venerable Princess Euphrosyne of Moscow

O Venerable Princess Euphrosyne, kind ascetic in wives, most praiseworthy saint of Christ! Accept the prayer for us, unworthy, who fall to you with faith and love, and with a warm petition to God, ask for the preservation of the city of Moscow and the people from troubles and misfortunes, make haste, like a loving mother, for the child you have gathered to bear the yoke of Christ in complacency and patience and It is good to strive to correct your life, and to salvation; in the world, ask the Lord for firmness in faith, progress in piety in the world, and to everyone who comes to you with faith and asks for your help and intercession, always give healing to illnesses, consolation in sorrows and prosperity in all life, especially beg the Lord in peace and In repentance, earthly life will pass us, we will be delivered from bitter ordeals and eternal torment, and through your intercession we will receive the Kingdom of Heaven, where you stand before the Lord with all the saints, may we always glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and to endless ages. Amen.

Psalm 3

Lord, why have you multiplied the cold? Many people rise up against me, many people say to my soul: there is no salvation for him in his God. But you, Lord, are my protector, my glory, and lift up my head. With my voice I cried to the Lord, and He heard me from His holy mountain. I fell asleep and fell asleep; I awoke, for the Lord will intercede for me. I will not be afraid of the people around me who attack me. Arise, Lord, save me, my God; For Thou hast struck down all those who are at enmity with me in vain, Thou hast crushed the teeth of sinners. Salvation is the Lord's, and Your blessing is upon Your people.
