“The Name of God” What will we be talking about? What is the name of God in Christianity? Maybe his name is Lord or Hosts? Why have Orthodox priests been hiding the personal name of God in Russia for the last 100 years?

Bible lessons

In this article we want to introduce you to all the names of God in the Bible and their meaning. By learning the names of God, we understand God and give Him glory and honor.

In the Old Testament and in the Jewish tradition, names played a huge role. It was believed that a name reveals one's personality and shows who one is. It is amazing how many names our God has, showing the comprehensiveness and versatility of His personality.

What is the name of God the Father?

It’s worth making a reservation right away that we will be talking about God, who is described in the Bible; other “gods” in this context do not interest us.

One of the most ancient religious books, the Bible, clearly states that God has a name for everything, and is even called several thousand times:

  • And let them know that You, whose name is Jehovah , alone are high above all the earth. (Ps. 83:20, translation by Archpriest G.P. Pavsky)

So sang King David in one of his psalms about 3,000 years ago. Indeed, centuries have passed, but the name of God has not been erased from the memory of generations, and many people still know it today.

In Russian literature, the name of God in the form Jehovah was used by many classical writers. This site contains excerpts from their works, where the divine Name appears.

Here you can also see how foreign classics used the name of God in their works.

Orthodox priests were not afraid of the name of God before: they used it in their books and sermons.

Also, many reference books and dictionaries talk about this sacred name, so all this is no secret for those who can read...

How God was deprived of his name in Christianity...

Take the Bible in the classical synodal (church) translation. Wherever the title “Lord” appears, there used to be the personal name Jehovah. (About 7000 times.)

The only exceptions are a few places where the name of God the father of Jesus Christ was left in place. (For example, Exodus 3:15, 15:3.)

But if you take newer translations, for example, the translation of the Russian Bible Society for 2009, then the name of God was completely removed there. The order was carried out, the evidence was hidden.

Compare:

Now for everyone who reads these translations, God has become an impersonal being, just God, Lord, Hosts...

Some baselessly claim that these are the names of God. But is it?

How many names does God have?

God, Lord, Hosts, Creator, Creator, and so on - these are all titles that give only a qualitative description of God, showing his position and abilities.

For example, many of the titles that are applied to God are also applied to other persons.

The titles "god" and "father" are applied not only to God, but also to Satan, as seen in these verses:

  • For those who do not believe, whose the god of this world has blinded... (2 Cor. 4:4)
  • Your father is the devil... he is a liar and the father of lies. (John 8:44)

This is what distinguishes a personal name from a title. A personal name identifies a specific person. The name Jehovah is not applied to anyone other than the true God.

Another good argument is one of the Ten Commandments:

  • Do not take the name of Jehovah your God in vain; for Jehovah will not leave unpunished anyone who takes name in vain. (Ex.20:7) Translation by Archimandrite Macarius

Note that it says "do not say the name " in the singular, not " names ". And the personal name of God “Jehovah” is specifically indicated, which must be treated with respect.

Another argument is the fact that God's personal name appears in the Bible about 7,000 times, which is more than the number of all other titles combined.

There is another misconception that although there is a name, it is not necessary to pronounce it in everyday life. This allegedly violates the third commandment.

But if you read translations of the Bible, where the name of the Christian God appears wherever it should appear, it is clear that in biblical times people freely pronounced this name in their daily lives.

  • Gideon said to them, “Neither will I rule over you, nor will my son rule over you; Let Jehovah rule over you . (Judges 8:23)

As you can see, in biblical times people FREELY used the sacred name of God in everyday life. The Bible is not a simple book. This is a book from God about God.

But there is another, but significant problem: the majority of believers stubbornly do not want to use the name of God . Why?

Holy names of God. The Power and Science of the Spoken Word

Oh, how sometimes we spend a lot of words on what constitutes the meaning of Creation. But you just need to take the Teaching and preach Love! Love is the spiritual source of high aspirations and the meaning of life. Love is the Lord God Himself, about whom the Bible says: “God is Love.” In the name of love, Lord Krishna, Lord Buddha, Lord Chaitanya, Jesus Christ, Mohammed, as well as many great Teachers, Messengers of God, His devotees came to our Earth in different eras and to different peoples, bringing spiritual knowledge and instructions to them for their benefit. according to the time and level of consciousness of people. That is why there are different scriptures and religious denominations today. And every religion says the same thing: that God is the Supreme Lord, and we are His servants, and following His laws ensures a happy life and prosperity, the difference being only minor details in accordance with the capabilities of people's understanding. And yet our lives are filled with anxiety, family, social, religious discord. And in these discords and disturbances we continue to exist, like a madman chopping off the fruit-bearing branch on which he sits and whose fruits he feeds on. So mercilessly and thoughtlessly to poison your habitat, to destroy your nurse - your mother - the Earth. For what and in the name of what?! We receive suffering in the form of diseases, natural disasters and from each other as a result of our ignorant, sinful life. What goes around comes around. And what are the vaunted achievements of scientific and technological progress compared to this, if soon there will be no one to use them? Really, we won’t be able to leave our children and grandchildren a legacy of anything other than a poisoned environment, serious illnesses and our own bitter experience of how not to do it? Freedom of expression makes it possible to choose either the path of Light, knowledge of oneself and the Truth, prosperity, or the path of darkness, satisfaction of passions, degradation. Let us try to be prudent and understand that by incorrectly using God’s gift of free will, we have chosen the path not to God, but from Him. And now we are reaping the bitter fruits of what we sown. The forces of evil, nurtured by our negative actions, have surrounded us, stealing life energy, provoking destruction and conflict in families, societies, governments, throughout the world. And religious confessions cannot prevent this due to the lack of the necessary level of spiritual purity. There are very few truly spiritual people who can change the situation on the planet. The negative karma accumulated by humanity today is very heavy, especially where spiritual and cultural values and their bearers were destroyed. Such a people does not have the necessary potential for rapid revival. Sinful actions nurtured, attracted and consolidated the influence of dark forces. Look at each other, watch yourself - and you will see that almost everyone, to a greater or lesser extent, bears the stamp of negative thinking, the pressure of which displaces the ability to see the bright side of life and a way out of a dead end. Therefore, there are no existing changes for the better. And it seems that everyone has come to terms with this. Everything, but not God, not His exalted servants, working in the material world to maintain order and balance of opposites in it. They act of their own free will, taking into account our free will. They are ready to help us now in solving all pressing problems in all areas of life. They want our salvation. And we? They know perfectly well all our thoughts and deeds and are trying to push us towards positive choices and thinking, understanding our position “under the hood of the dark ones.” We ourselves chose this “cap”, and we ourselves must wish to free ourselves from it. About 5,000 years ago, on the eve of the era of Kali Yuga - the era of godlessness, strife, vices and wars in which we now live, the Supreme Personality of Godhead - Krishna appeared on this Earth for the benefit of everyone. He established the eternal religion of a living being - Sanatana Dharma - the unshakable law of the Universe. Just as it is impossible to deprive fire of its properties - heat and light, so it is impossible to change Sanatan Dharma. He also left knowledge about Himself, captured in the Srimad-Bhagavatam - the ripe fruit of the entire vast Vedic literature, and His instructions to humanity, presented in the Srimad Bhagavad-Gita - a spiritual dialogue between God and His devotee, giving people intimate knowledge. The Lord comes himself or sends his representatives to positively resolve the problems of a particular people. Lord Buddha came about 2500 years ago to stop the process of unqualified Brahmins following the Vedic rituals of animal sacrifice, to stop the senseless killing of animals, and also to preach teachings to attract materialists to the spiritual path. Jesus Christ, 2000 years ago, with his life showed us the Path that, with God’s help, we can follow—the path of transfiguration and resurrection. But people saw in the life of Jesus only the crucifixion, the sacrifice made by the Son of Man for their sins. He gave us a helping hand to walk the Path in Light, in love for God, especially at the “end of times,” when the slightest step towards God is a difficult battle; and this is our time now. Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared more than 500 years ago to give people the highest benefit - love of Godhead through the pure chanting of the Holy Names of God in the mahamantra: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. “In this age of Kali, there is no other way to attain love of Godhead except by chanting the Holy Names of the Lord” (Brihad Naradiya Purana). “Praise the Lord, call on His name; proclaim His deeds among the nations" (Ps. 104:1). "...Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (Rom. 10.13) "...Call on Allah or the Merciful, whatever you call. He has the best names” (P.17.110). “Whoever sincerely calls on My name will reach Me after death, and I will take him to heaven.” (Testaments of Amida Buddha). So, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism tell us about the same chanting of the same Lord. By serving God in word, thought and deed, and thus connecting with Him and remembering Him constantly, we can revive our original nature as a loving servant and get rid of the burden of problems. But it is very difficult to implement this today, during the difficult period of transition into the new millennium, into a new era, being “under the hood of the dark ones.” Many people have lost the ability to understand spiritual topics. Their bodies and spiritual channels are clogged, they are sick and are unable to help either themselves or others. Therefore, today, during the period of Armageddon - the battle between the forces of Light and Darkness for our divine souls, for the salvation of our planet - the Forces of Light offer everyone who can hear and understand them, regardless of religion, who are aware of the events taking place, their importance for the fate of the Earth, to touch the Science of the Spoken Words and master it. This science was known to Atlantis and Lemuria. It was practiced by adepts of the East and mystics of the West and is based on the use of the voice in combination with the throat chakra when pronouncing mantras, prayers, invocations, chants, decrees of light to increase the action of beneficial forces on the planet and in the world of the individual. When you want to get rid of your vices and become successful, but cannot overcome your sinful nature, use the Science of the Spoken Word and call on the Forces of Light to help. In this way, we can provide assistance to those who are closed to God and are dying in captivity of alcoholism, drug addiction, whose souls are in the networks of dark forces. It is also possible to call on the Forces of Light, empowered to resolve any other problems at any levels.

How to pronounce God's name correctly?

One of the excuses is that today no one knows how exactly the name of God was pronounced. And besides, the form of pronunciation “Jehovah” accepted today is considered incorrect by some modern learned theologians.

They argue that it would be more correct to consider that the name of God sounds like Yahweh, or Yahweh. However, they don’t have agreement here either.

Interestingly, recently the French archaeologist and Hebraist Gerard Gerteau published his research in the book “ The Name of God - Its History and Pronunciation ,” where he argues:

God's name was most likely pronounced Yehua or Yehoah with the Hebrew aspirated X, as in English and Greek, and stress on the penultimate syllable.

His book is devoted to the reconstruction of the pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton and received a large number of positive reviews from leading experts.

Why is Jehovah correct and not Yahweh?

One of the methods is a comparative study of theonyms - Jewish names, which include the Tetragrammaton.

Almost always the first element of such names is Jeho- or Jehu- (Yehoshua, Jehoanan, Jeconiah, Jeholiah, etc.). At the same time, the variants on Io(u)-, less often Ie-, are simply abbreviations from Ieho(u)- (John, Jonah, Joab, Joseph, Judah, etc.).

Another argument is that the Tetragrammaton differs from the Hebrew name Yehuda (Judas) by only one letter - D. Removing D, we get the modern pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton in Hebrew, and the ancient one should not differ much from the modern one.

In his opinion, it is almost 100% possible to establish that the Tetragrammaton had four syllables, and not two, as in the Yahweh version, while the first was I, and the last was A.

The third line of evidence goes back to the authoritative Jewish scholar Maimonides, who said that the Tetragrammaton was pronounced “according to its letters.”

In the Hebrew language, the same letter could serve as both a consonant and a vowel. When pronouncing, the vowel version was used. The vowel pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton "according to its letters" was E-E-U-A.

But on the other hand, is it so important how exactly the name of God is pronounced?

For example : today no one knows exactly how the name Jesus was pronounced in Hebrew (literally this name means “the help or salvation of Jehovah”), but this does not prevent everyone from using the form of this name that is common in this language.

Previously, in Rus' they said Jesus, and then everyone was forcibly forced to say Jesus, and now few people are outraged by this.

For example, your name is FEDOR (from Greek - GOD’S GIFT), if children pronounce KHVEDOR, or KHFEDAR, or FEDA, etc.,

You will still understand that they are calling on your NAME, especially if you know that the children respect your name, honoring it and appreciating its meaning, which has the meaning of “GOD’S GIFT.”

Would you blame your children if they distorted your NAME, resorting to you for help with hope and love for you.

El Shaddai

Translated into Russian, this noun phrase means “God Almighty.” The letter combination shad is translated as “strength.” In the literal sense, this concept is deciphered as follows: “full of power, strength, strength.”

There are several other interpretations of “El Shaddai”. However, they are considered less reliable. For example, there is an opinion that the root of the word “Shaddai” comes from the ancient Akkadian “Shadu”, which translates as “mountain”. In this case, the expression itself can be interpreted as “God of the mountain.”

According to another point of view, "Shaddai" translated from Hebrew means "breast of a nursing mother." There is supposedly a connecting parallel in this, where the mother's breast acts as a symbol of God.

It is worth noting: such an interpretation was quite common in ancient times and was quite consistent with old beliefs, but it clearly does not coincide with the interpretation of the Torah and other Scriptures.
