Which saint should I light a candle for?
First of all, a candle is placed at the icon of the Holiday or at a revered temple icon, then to the relics of a saint, if there are any in the temple, to your saint (whose name you bear), and only then about health or repose.
For the departed, candles are placed on the eve of the Crucifixion, mentally saying:
“Remember, Lord, your deceased servant (name) and forgive his sins, voluntary and involuntary, and grant him the Kingdom of Heaven.”
For health or need, candles are lit for the Savior, the Mother of God, the holy great martyr and healer Panteleimon, those saints to whom the Lord has given special grace to heal illnesses and provide help in need.
Having placed a candle in front of the saint of God you have chosen, mentally say:
“Holy saint of God (name), pray to God for me, a sinner (sinner).”
Or for whom you are asking. Then you need to come up and venerate the icon.

When and to which saint to prayI once had an interesting conversation with a Christian:
he was asked why, when he prays, he turns to God through the saints or asks the saints themselves for something, instead of turning to God directly, as the Bible teaches us?
After thinking a little, he answered like this:
“Imagine this situation: when we need something from a big boss, we turn to people who know him well and whom he certainly will not refuse.
We ask them to intercede for us. So are the saints. They know God better, and God knows them well, so the Lord will probably answer their request much faster than for us, such sinful people.
That’s why I ask the saints to be mediators and intercessors for me before God.”
He practically conveyed the official view of some churches on this:
“In addition to God, we depict the Mother of God, holy angels and holy people on holy icons.
But we must pray to them not as God, but as those close to God, who have pleased Him with their holy lives.
Out of love for us, they pray for us before God. And we must ask for their help and intercession, because the Lord, for their sake, is more likely to hear our sinful prayers.”
But it turns out that everything is not so simple, you need to know when and which saint to turn to.
In particular, “They pray to St. Maximus the Greek for intercession for widows and orphans,
they pray to the martyr Neophytos when the children’s teaching is weak” (Orthodox calendar, 1998, February 3) In the most difficult circumstances, it is advised to turn to St. Nicholas the Pleasant.
Each person, depending on what day he was born and what his name is, has his own saint who guards him and to whom he should pray fervently.
