Matrona of Moscow: even an amulet can work miracles

The life path of Matrona Nikonova

A girl was born into a peasant family in the Tula province, Tsarist Russia, in 1881. The girl was blind from birth, her parents wanted to leave her in an orphanage, but God did not leave Matrona, the mother had a prophetic dream that changed her decision.
Until the end of her days, the woman loved her daughter very much. Matrona discovered the ability to heal and foresee events from childhood. At the age of 7-8 years, Matrona helped the sick and mourning, healed people with prayers, the fame of the girl spread throughout the area. Worldly people began to come to the girl, asking for help, and as a sign of gratitude they left food for the parents, so the girl went from being a burden to becoming a wet nurse. At about 14 years old, the girl attended the service of St. John of Kronstadt, the Cathedral of St. Andrew the First-Called in the city of Kronstadt. John of Konstadt served in this cathedral for 53 years; during Soviet times, like many architectural and religious monuments, it was demolished.

At the age of 17, the girl lost the ability to walk; Matronushka spent the rest of her life sitting. She did not complain about her suffering and gratefully accepted all the difficulties she encountered. After the revolution, the girl was left homeless; she and her friend decided to look for a better life in the city. Since 1925, Matrona moved to Moscow, although she had older brothers, the girl lived wherever she went, among friends and acquaintances. The authorities persecuted church ministers. Most churches were closed during this period, church utensils were confiscated or looted, buildings were destroyed, and priests were exiled to camps and prisons. Matrona passed such a fate.

All the years she lived in Moscow, Matrona helped those in need; every day crowds of people came for help, up to 40 people a day. People came for advice, for healing, for guidance, Matrona did not refuse anyone. During the Great Patriotic War, Matrona did not leave Moscow. According to unverified information, the Leader of the people came for advice, but there is no documentary evidence of such a meeting. In 50 years 20 tbsp. Matrona moved to live in the Moscow region, where she died in 1952 in Skhodnya. The funeral service for the Matrona of Moscow took place in the Temple of the Venerable Robe of the Lord in the Assumption Cathedral in Moscow on Donskaya.

The temple was erected at the meeting place of the clergy of Moscow and the ambassador of the Persian Shah Abbas in 1690. The Shah gave the Robe of the Lord (part of the clothing in which Jesus was led to Calvary) as a gift to Emperor Mikhail Romanov. Matrona was buried in one of the largest cemeteries in Moscow, Danilovsky. Matrona herself indicated the burial place, closer to the temple, so that the service taking place in it could reach the place. For many years, pilgrims came with their requests and problems to Matrona’s grave.

On March 8, 1998, the remains of Matrona were transferred to the Moscow Danilov Monastery, then to the temple of the Intercession Monastery, and placed in a silver tomb. On May 2, 1999, the Venerable Matrona was canonized as a Moscow saint. The decision on church-wide canonization was adopted by the Holy Synod on August 17, 2004, a document on this was approved at the meeting of the Council of Bishops on October 6, 2004.

What is an amulet for?

Although we belong to a certain religious denomination, we still live in an environment of paganism. Every time we turn to one or another religious or liturgical tradition, we also encounter pagan ones. In particular, such a widespread tradition at present is the church incense or, as the common people called it, an amulet, a talisman, protection from damage.

Incense is a bag or a special small reliquary in which incense is placed and a string is tied to it and worn around the neck.

With the advent of Christianity in Rus', the pagan traditions that existed among the Slavic people could not subside immediately. If a new one comes to replace some already established, rooted tradition, then the remnants will exist for a long time. And, unfortunately, many such remnants, many elements of the pagan cult have passed from the past into modern reality.

What do we have now? A man comes to a parish store, buys an amulet there, wears it and thinks that by doing so he is freed from evil spirits, that the item he wears around his neck will save him from some problems. Unfortunately, it is not. We must know how to use incense correctly.

Incense is, first of all, a symbol of prayer. The smoke that burns from the censer during worship is not just an incense that spreads throughout the entire temple so that we can breathe comfortably. Smoke is a symbol of prayer. In the Old Testament there was a special incense altar, to which a person was placed, burning incense to God at a certain time, so that both the smoke rising from the altar and the prayer of the people would reach the Lord.

But nowadays incense has become a kind of shrine, which is worshiped like icons, like the Life-Giving Cross. Due to misunderstanding, ignorance of why certain things are offered to us by the church, superstitions arise, which are supplemented by pagan cults and superstitions migrated from the past. Therefore, in church stores and even non-church stores we come across amulet items that are sold not because a person attaches any special meaning to it. This often doesn't happen. A person simply does not know the essence, the history of the meaning of an object. People have turned faith into magic, which is a sad reality.

Important: do not treat the Orthodox faith as a magical act. Incense has its uses, like icons

Incense is burnt to God, not worn around the neck. Human consciousness must truly understand the meaning of church things.

Over time, the word “incense” and its very content have changed. The Church has made concessions to human weakness, which wants, in addition to the cross, to have some other protection from evil spirits.

Incense "Jesus"

How to make it yourself

To do this, you should prepare the following materials:

  • shred measuring 12x6 cm;
  • 2-3 pieces of incense;
  • lace 50 cm long;
  • red floss threads;
  • a pencil that will be used to apply the pattern.

In order for the amulet you make to have magical powers, you must adhere to the following recommendations when making it:

  1. Embroidery on the fabric should be done before sewing the bag. It is small in size, so applying a pattern to it in finished form will be problematic.
  2. The design is a cross (a symbol of Christianity) or Slavic signs, for example, a bracelet.
  3. When embroidering a talisman, you need to think about the person to whom it will belong. They wish him health, happiness, kindness, good luck and love.
  4. Once the process is complete, the bag is stitched.
  5. Any remaining visible pencil lines should be erased.
  6. Incense is placed inside.
  7. A string is woven from threads and fixed to the talisman.
  8. A cord is sewn to the top edge.
  9. Upon completion of making the amulet, a prayer is read.

In what cases do they turn to Matronushka?

Parents always worry about their children, and if a child is in trouble, the mother will always feel it. The connection between mother and child has been proven by many scientists, and through a mother’s prayer you can save your child:

  • serious illness or other illness;
  • the child was influenced by bad company;
  • they come to Matrona and ask for patients who are addicted to drugs or alcohol;
  • about family strengthening or reunification;
  • asking for a holy intercessor for the condemned;
  • prayer will help you find a job or serve in the army.

Many people ask Matrona for help from illnesses and enemies, she tries to help everyone heal and guide them on the right path, you just need to believe and pray. Buying an amulet doesn’t mean anything, spiritual faith and prayer will help you overcome obstacles encountered along the way, there are no hopeless situations, faith will always help you solve all the problems that stand in your way. Keep and take care of yourself, with God.

For a long time, a believer, in order to know the power and protection of God, not only turned to him in prayers, but also wore objects on his body that symbolized his unshakable faith. One of these items is a church amulet. This is a small box, handbag or leather pouch, inside of which incense, holy earth or other item is placed that protects its owner from life's difficulties.

In addition, this decoration is quite beautiful and original. At the same time, we must remember that this is not a simple accessory, but a talisman that protects a person from physical and spiritual torment, giving him faith and instilling hope for the best.

The attitude of the church to amulets

Churchmen claim that neither prayers in amulet, nor images of saints have any sacred meaning if a person himself does not comply with church rules and canons, lives violating the commandments of the Lord. Just like reading a prayer, which is carried out mechanically. They will not bring any benefit, much less help the fulfillment of any desires. The power of the amulet lies in a person’s faith.

People are often mistaken in believing that objects consecrated in church are “charged” with magical powers. As if all you have to do is wear such a silver or gold amulet on your body, and you are protected from evil spirits, illnesses and other troubles.

Science has proven that silver, and especially its ions, significantly contribute to the purification of negative bacteriological environments. However, this, according to the church fathers, has nothing to do with the Orthodox faith.

Saving grace is bestowed by the Lord only with the participation of the person himself. He must pray himself, consciously. A person must constantly work to eradicate his shortcomings. Deliverance from passions, merciful deeds, regular attendance at services in the holy church - it is these deeds that bring about the salvation of the soul, cast out evil spirits, and deliver from troubles on the path of life.

Of course, it would be easier to achieve results with a minimum of effort: buy an amulet, consecrate it, hang it on your body and wait for the result. But Christianity is a faith that requires constant work on oneself, discipline and devotion.

The amulet protects an Orthodox person, so he should treat such a talisman carefully and carefully, and remember that this is a symbol of faith that is constantly present with him.

The heart will tell you which incense to choose, with the image of which saint, made of gold, silver or other material. If a person feels grace emanating from the saint’s face, then we can say that the saint chose him himself, and that such an amulet will be the best amulet for him.

Amulet with handwritten text

Often a handwritten prayer is placed in the amulet. Perhaps the roots of this tradition go back to pagan times, when they used conspiracies to get rid of evil spirits and slander. According to church canons, wearing such amulets is permissible if the texts are not dubious. It is best to find out what prayers should be in the amulet from the clergy.

Body amulet

Initially, this church item was aimed at protecting its owner from all sorts of misfortunes and was worn in most cases on the body (hence the name). Even during the times of Kievan Rus, every warrior who went on a campaign put on a talisman, where a piece of his native land lay. It was believed that he would protect him from the enemy, a stray bullet and any danger along the way.

It was worn by merchants. On the way, their caravans were often waylaid by robbers. And they really needed invisible protection. The amulet was also very popular among sailors. When going to sea (and this is a rather risky activity), each of them had this item with them.

Also, its contents were of particular importance to the owner of this decoration. The following were mainly placed inside the church amulet:

  • a small icon depicting a saint, often a patron saint;
  • a piece of relics;
  • land;
  • prayer text;
  • incense.

It is important to remember that you can only give, donate or transfer it if you specifically purchased it for a specific person. The most powerful amulets are those that were given by close relatives.

It is not advisable to pass it on to other people under any circumstances. This is a very individual thing that only its owner can touch. Losing it is a bad omen. This means that the person has lost protection and support. Then you need to immediately go to the temple and turn to your saint with prayers and repentance.

Usually men wear amulets with the image:

  • Nicholas the Wonderworker;
  • St. George the Victorious;
  • Lord Almighty.

Since ancient times, it was intended for sailors and warriors, so men's amulet not only preserved life, but was also aimed at protection from enemies and procreation.

Women prefer various images of the Virgin Mary, because she is the patron saint of mothers:

  • “Seven Arrow” Mother of God: protects against the evil thoughts of other people;
  • “Vladimirskaya”: helps resolve everyday difficulties;
  • “Sign”: helps with various diseases;
  • “Kazan” Mother of God: blesses for marriage;
  • “Mammal” icon: protects a nursing mother.

Any icon of the Mother of God will suit every woman: it will give health, peace and tranquility, and most importantly, it will help fulfill her main mission on Earth - to become a mother and raise worthy children.

Both men and women need to understand how to wear an amulet. After all, this amulet has power only when it is treated with understanding and knowledge. If the person who wears the amulet truly believes in him, follows all the rules and adheres to the basic canons of the church, then the power of the saint depicted on it will only grow, thereby filling the life of its owner with meaning, love and hope.

Special purpose

Also, in ancient times, there were special, specialized amulet, that is, some were intended for men, others for women. If a mother was gathering her sons or other male relatives for war, then she would definitely make an amulet for him and put specialized saving prayers in the bag. According to various beliefs, prayer services were supposed to protect a man from arrows, knives, bullets and even shells, thus they believed that an amulet with such filling could ward off trouble from a man during a battle and at the same time it contributed to healing wounds in the shortest possible time. In addition to the saving prayer, it was possible to place a handful of earth from one’s home in a bag, thus, a mother or wife, giving such a bag to a man for war, gave him some physical and mental strength, such an amulet was a reminder of a family, a loving woman and a father’s house. Some sources say that in ancient times there were special incense bags with the help of which a man could maintain his ardor and reproductive function for many years. To create such a talisman, specialized medicinal herbs and many charmed small objects were sewn into a bag. Women who have been unable to conceive, become pregnant or bear a child for a long time. Such women were given special bags around their necks, which were filled with prayers to the Mother of God and many charmed things. Thus, we can conclude that in ancient times, amulet was not only a talisman, but also a kind of salvation for many people.

Ladanka

The word incense became attached to these objects after the spread of Christianity among the Slavs, when instead of objects of pagan worship, magical and other artifacts, the bags became receptacles such as Orthodox attributes such as:

  • an icon depicting your patron or other saints;
  • a piece of holy relics or soil from holy places of Orthodox pilgrimage;
  • prayer texts;
  • incense.

The widespread carrying of incense among Christians gave a new name to nauzniki - incense. The popularity of incense is explained by the fact that it is used during church services. Its smoke (burnt incense) sanctifies dwellings and drives out evil spirits.

The most popular among parishioners is “cherubic incense.” These are the remains of aromatic resin after burning during the Cherubic chant during the Liturgy. Parishioners ask the priest for these incense to put in their incense, as they have a special power to repel evil spirits.

Over time, not only bags became body amulets. Amusements made of silver, gold, metal alloys, clay and other materials appeared. Incense began to be called small body images of saints and any other church amulets that can be worn on the body.

In addition to church shrines, you can place in body amulet photos of people dear to the wearer of the amulet, whom he wishes happiness and goodness.

In the old days, when there were no photographs yet, in body amulets they placed leaves with the names of relatives and friends for whom they prayed, curls of babies for whom they asked for intercession, poppy seeds blessed on the Honey Savior (“makovey”, as it is called in common people ).

Christian times

With the spread of Christianity, the contents of the incense began to change. A little church consecrated incense was placed in the body bag, which was believed to drive away evil spirits, dispel obsessions, and cleanse the body and soul of a person. By the way, this is where the name of the bag comes from: amulet. What it actually gave to those wearing it is difficult to say. Most likely, it really helped. In addition to the aromatic substance, various shrines were sewn into it. For example, special protective prayers and psalms copied by oneself or by monks, small icons depicting Christ, the Mother of God, and holy martyrs. Patients suffering from physical ailments tried to obtain pieces of the relics of their heavenly patrons or saints known for healing. They were also carefully sewn into amulet. When Catholic priests sold indulgences in the Middle Ages, naive believers tried to keep these absolutions in body bags.

How to wear an amulet

Nowadays, incense means pendants with images of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, saints, and Guardian Angel. They can be made of two halves, into which you can put a piece of the relics of saints, a piece of the Holy Land, or the text of a prayer. They are made from wood, leather, clay, silver, and gold. Worn around the neck or attached to clothing with a pin. Carrying an amulet on a chain or rope is more reliable, but a pin can come unfastened and injure a person, or there is a possibility of losing the amulet itself.

Important: the amulet does not replace the pectoral cross! It can be worn with it, but not instead of a cross. They can be put on one chain or thread

The opinion of the priests regarding the incense is unanimous. First of all, it is a thing, and a thing in itself cannot be a protection from evil spirits and an assistant in communication with God. You should not attach special importance to it and attribute miraculous properties.

Our protection from bad things is unceasing prayer, confession and communion, participation in divine services, repentance, and mercy. Our righteous, if possible, life, the desire to get away from sin and not commit it again.

About Christian virtues:

  • What is mercy
  • About humility
  • About repentance

But the faces of saints are depicted on the incense, particles of relics and the Holy Land are placed, they are consecrated in the temple, so you need to treat this side of wearing the incense with spiritual trepidation and care. If you don’t take care of it because it is made of precious metal, it will be a vain faith that has nothing to do with Orthodoxy.

Traditions, beliefs and superstitions associated with incense

The incense has gone through a long and difficult historical path from a pagan amulet to a symbol of the Christian faith. Throughout all this time, she did an excellent job of helping her owner. With the amulet, as with any protective and security thing, there are beliefs and superstitions. Here are some of them:

  1. You should not let strangers touch your amulet. This is an individual item that works on your energy, so interference from someone else’s field is extremely undesirable.
  2. If the incense has the form of a box, change its contents every three months so that the incense or the written texts of the prayers begin to “work” anew.
  3. Accept incense as a gift only from close people; it is believed that if a blood relative puts it around your neck or pins it on your clothes, this will greatly enhance the effect of the incense.
  4. Don’t leave for yourself an amulet that was given to someone.

If your amulet suddenly breaks, don’t be upset, it means it has fulfilled its purpose. Do not throw it away under any circumstances; it is better to take the broken item to church. Losing an amulet, on the contrary, is considered a bad sign, which means you have lost your protection. In this case, you need to contact the church to order a prayer for health and buy yourself a new amulet. The allotment amulet gives its owner powerful protection and provides comprehensive assistance. If you suddenly decide to buy it, don’t be put off by the price or appearance, listen to yourself, carefully look at the amulet presented in the window, and maybe she herself will “call” you.

And in general, acquiring spiritual values in exchange for material ones is not the best solution.

To buy incense, it is best to contact the church, spiritual fathers and clergy. Yes, there are people there who are not trustworthy, but the chance of meeting such a person is extremely low. Moreover, if you have doubts, you can consecrate the item again. This is exactly what they do with things that are suspicious from a magical point of view.

What requests are made to the Seven-Arrow Icon? Those who have been overtaken by a long streak of failures. In business, in personal affairs - it doesn’t matter. The amulet creates a shield around a person, warding off evil - words or actions.

How to wear an amulet

It should be noted that the amulet does not replace the pectoral cross, but it is quite acceptable if it is located together with the cross on the same chain or rope on the body of an Orthodox person.

But other jewelry that is not related to religion, even if it is also made of silver, gold and other metals, cannot be worn on the same string with church amulets. They are worn on different chains.

It is important to know that you can give or transfer jewelry to another person only if it was purchased specifically for him. The most powerful amulet is considered to be the one donated by close relatives

Nowadays, the most popular amulet items are made of gold and silver. They are beautiful and hardly wear out. Passed on from generation to generation, they become family heirlooms and talismans of the family. But when putting on a talisman, you should remember that first of all it is a shrine, and only then a piece of jewelry.

Christians wear body icons, crosses, relics and amulet with reverent reverence, regardless of whether they are made of wood and fabric or gold and silver.
