B.16. IN 1. POLYELINE SERVICE IN GREAT LENT

The literal translation of the word “polyeleos” from Greek is “many mercy.” Due to the same sound, it is sometimes translated as “butter”. This is truly appropriate, since at the polyeleos service the bishop or cleric of the temple anoints the forehead of everyone who venerates the holiday icon.

At this time, the choir sings Psalms 134 and 135, repeatedly repeating the words “for His mercy endures forever.” Polyeleos is a solemn part of the divine service, therefore it occurs several times a year, always on Sundays or holidays. What is polyeleos in Orthodoxy? There are several answers to this question.

What is polyeleos in the Church

The answer to this question will help you better understand the intricacies of worship. Firstly, polyeleos is a remembrance of the myrrh-bearing women. After the crucifixion, the Savior was placed in a tomb, his body wrapped in shrouds. On Sunday morning, the women came to the tomb with vessels containing myrrh, a special fragrant oil. There they were met by an angel who announced the Resurrection of Christ. The most significant event in the history of mankind is marked by a solemn part of the service.

Secondly, answering the question of what polyeleos is, one cannot fail to mention God’s special grace poured out on Christians. During the earthly life of Jesus Christ, oil and ointment were of great value. As a sign of gratitude, honored guests were anointed with fragrant oil. The Gospel speaks of a woman who anointed the Savior’s feet with oil and wiped them with her hair, which speaks of her high virtue - humility. Today, it is also difficult to imagine your life without butter, not church butter, but regular butter - vegetable and butter.

In Orthodoxy there is a custom of thanking the Lord for his generosity. What is polyeleos? Roughly speaking, this is thanking God for the oil. Water-blessing prayers are a salute to the main liquid for everything that exists on earth. It is not for nothing that everything that has special value for a person is used in church sacraments. Bread and wine, products from which Holy Communion is prepared, prosphora and Easter bread - artos. All this is of great importance for Orthodox Christians and is especially revered. All these products are sacred.

All-night vigil

It consists of combining Vespers with Matins and the first hour, and both Vespers and Matins are celebrated more solemnly and with greater illumination of the temple than on other days.

This service is called all-night vigil because in ancient times it began late in the evening and continued all night until dawn.

Then, out of condescension for the infirmities of the believers, they began to begin this service a little earlier and make cuts in reading and singing, and therefore it now ends not so late. The former name of its all-night vigil has been preserved.

Oil healing

Holy oil is sold in every church shop. In small containers, most often with an icon glued to the bottle. This oil is poured after a prayer service to one or another saint. It must be used with prayer, anointing the forehead or sore spot on the body in a cross shape. Small children are often smeared this way.

For example, Orthodox mothers noticed that if, during epidemics of colds, they anoint their child with oil consecrated on the relics of the Matrona of Moscow, the risk of catching an infection is significantly reduced. We must not forget about prayer to the one whose oil is being anointed with.

Matins

The second part of the all-night vigil - Matins - reminds us of the times of the New Testament: the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ into the world for our salvation, and His glorious Resurrection.

The beginning of Matins directly points us to the Nativity of Christ. It begins with a doxology of the angels who appeared to the Bethlehem shepherds: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”

Then the sixth psalm is read, that is, six selected psalms of King David (3, 37, 62, 87, 102 and 142), which depict the sinful state of people, filled with troubles and misfortunes, and fervently express the only hope people expect for God’s mercy. Worshipers listen to the Six Psalms with special concentrated reverence.

After the Six Psalms, the deacon pronounces the Great Litany

Then a short song with verses is sung loudly and joyfully about the appearance of Jesus Christ in the world to people: “God is the Lord and has appeared to us, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” i.e. God is Lord, and has appeared to us, and is worthy of glorification, going to the glory of the Lord.

After this, a troparion , i.e., a song in honor of a holiday or a celebrated saint, and kathismas , i.e., individual parts of the Psalter, consisting of several consecutive psalms. The reading of kathismas, as well as the reading of the Six Psalms, calls us to think about our disastrous sinful state and place all hope in the mercy and help of God. Kathisma means sitting, since one can sit while reading kathisma.

At the end of the kathisma, the deacon pronounces the small litany , and then the polyeleos . Polyeleos is a Greek word that means “much mercy” or “much illumination.”

Prayer to Matrona of Moscow for healing

Unfortunately, not everyone knows a sufficient number of prayer requests to one or another saint. Since the example was given of the use of oil consecrated on the relics of Matrona of Moscow, the prayer will be directed specifically to her.

O blessed mother Matrono, hear and accept us now, sinners, praying to you, who throughout your entire life has learned to receive and listen to all those who suffer and mourn, with faith and hope who resort to your intercession and help, giving quick help and miraculous healing to everyone. May your mercy not fail now for us, unworthy, restless in this busy world and nowhere finding consolation and compassion in spiritual sorrows and help in bodily illnesses: heal our illnesses, deliver us from the temptations and torment of the devil, who passionately fights, help us convey our everyday Cross, to bear all the hardships of life and not lose the image of God in it, to preserve the Orthodox faith until the end of our days, to have strong trust and hope in God and unfeigned love for others; help us, after departing from this life, to achieve the Kingdom of Heaven with all those who please God, glorifying the mercy and goodness of the Heavenly Father, glorified in the Trinity, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.

B.16. IN 1. POLYELINE SERVICE IN GREAT LENT

Finding the head of St. John the Baptist (February 24), 40 martyrs (March 9) and temple ones.

What if a polyeleos service is celebrated on the weekdays of Lent? For example, on the Annunciation, or the temple holiday, or the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste, there is a polyeleos service; if it falls on weekdays of fasting, then chaos - “Open my mouth” always.

Separately, we should consider the features of worship in the case of the polyeleos saint on the weekday of Lent. By “weekly days of Great Lent” in this paragraph we mean the days from Monday to Friday 2 - 6 weeks of the Holy Pentecost, because During the first week of Lent, no feasts are celebrated for saints. Of course, this option happens quite rarely: there are only 2 holidays with polyeleos in the Typikon, the memory of which may fall on the weekdays of fasting - February 24 and March 9. In addition, in the case of a very early Easter (if Easter is March 22-24), the memory of St. Alexia, Metropolitan Moskovsky (February 12), also falls under this category. Finally, in some dioceses services may be held on the feast days of locally revered saints, the commemoration of which in Mesyatseslov falls on the period from February to mid-April (for example, on April 3 in the St. Petersburg metropolis a feast is celebrated in honor of St. Seraphim of Vyritsky). On the other hand, there are years when not a single polyeleos holiday occurs during the weekdays of Lent!

Despite the rarity of the “Lenten polyeleos,” this version of the service deserves special attention for two reasons. Firstly, in this case we have quite a large number of interesting liturgical features, and not all of them are spelled out in detail in the Typikon. Secondly, and this is an equally important aspect, Lenten services in relation to the Charter are of the same type. If we do not take into account the peculiarities of performing the canon on different days of the week (after all, the principles of performing the canon are always the same, the differences between days from each other are limited to the hymn in which the initial hymn of the Trisong is inserted), then all services are repeated in one the other is like a carbon copy. And among such almost identical weekly services, the polyeleos holiday appears to be a service of a completely different type. This holiday (though to a lesser extent than the Annunciation) breaks the everyday monotony of Lenten and allows us to taste joy and rejoicing in the days of repentant crying and sadness. It is for this reason that even in those small churches where services are performed only on Sundays and holidays and where many polyeleos are missed during the normal period of the year, Lenten polyeleos are celebrated without fail.

The charter for such a service in the Typikon is in Mark’s chapters on February 24 (“If the Finding of the honest head of the Forerunner happens on Monday of the 2nd, or 3rd, or 4th week of fasting” and “If the Finding of the honest head of the Forerunner happens in one fast days") and in the main section on March 9.

All services of the Polyeleos holiday, starting from Vespers the day before and until LPD on the day of the holiday itself, are performed in purple vestments. The choir sings all the hymns in the usual chant (not Lenten chant), prayer to St. Ephraim the Syrian (in all places where it is supposed) is performed with only 3 bows. All other bows (which are not accompanied by the prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian) characteristic of the Lenten service are cancelled.

Language of worship

Initially, even under the Apostles, Christians performed prayers, obviously, in Aramaic - which was also the language of Christ’s preaching. Later, as the faith spread throughout the vast empire of Rome, these were added:

  • Greek is the language of many inhabitants of the empire, in addition, educated people of that time;
  • Latin is the actual language of the “Romans”, the creators of this then most powerful state;

The first translation of the Bible into Latin, made by Blessed. Jerome of Stridontus, received the name “Vulgate”, since it was created not in “high” Latin, the language of the educated elite of Rome, but in “vulgar”, the language of ordinary believers to whom God’s Word is addressed.

  • finally, the national languages of the peoples who adopted Christianity from the outskirts of the empire.

At the same time, in the Christian West and East, historically different situations have developed with the language of the service:

  • The Roman Church, which had the highest authority among the “barbarian” peoples, also early instilled in them reverence for Latin, its liturgical language;
  • in the East they proceeded from the fact that services should be understandable to people; This is where the tradition of translating services into national languages originates.

This is exactly what the saints did . Cyril and Methodius , laboring in the Slavic lands, many of their predecessors, as well as countless followers, worked in the same way.

Missionary translators were not stopped even by the fact that the languages of the “barbarians” often did not have a sufficient vocabulary to express the truths of Christianity . This is how so-called neologisms appeared, new words, but created on the basis of existing ones: for example, “mercy”, “philanthropy”, “compassion”, others.

Subsequently, they acted in the same way, for example:

  • creator of the Perm alphabet, St. Stefan Permsky;
  • St. Macarius (Glukharev), St. Macarius (Nevsky), called the “Apostles of Altai”; they say that they had to travel around the camps for weeks to find an analogue of this or that word in the languages of the Altai tribes.

Many believe that the Altai language itself and its writing are the creation of missionaries who translated liturgical texts. Thanks to a single language, disparate tribes were able to create an ethnic Altai community.

What is church worship?

Already from the etymology of the word itself, which includes two others, “God” and “service,” it is clear that it is legitimate to call any service to the Creator this way. This could be prayer, preaching, serving others, or other works in His Name. However, it is church worship that refers to the form of serving the Lord, which includes:

  • the conciliar prayer of the Church, performed according to a certain order that has developed since the first centuries;
  • reading the Holy Scriptures ;
  • the performance of the Sacraments by which believers communicate with Jesus Christ and unite with Him.

Divine Liturgy

Since ancient times, only those who had received Baptism, as well as those preparing for it—the catechumens—had the right to participate in this service. The latter, however, were allowed to be with the rest of the believers only until the deacon said:

“Catechumens, come forth!”

After this, the “Liturgy of the Faithful” began, which was attended only by the baptized.

Kinds

To date, the Russian Church most often celebrates three liturgies, the creation of which is attributed to:

  • St. Basil the Great;
  • St. John Chrysostom;
  • Pope Gregory Dvoeslov.

In some dioceses, in memory of St. Mark also serves a special liturgy, the appearance of which is traced back to this Apostle of Christ.

Time: when does it start and how long does it last?

The usual start of the liturgy is around 8 a.m. or 9 a.m., however, it is better to check the service time in a specific church. It lasts about one and a half hours.

Meaning

All liturgies, except those created by Pope Gregory, are so-called “complete”. This means that during them the Sacrament of the Eucharist , the transformation of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. They are taught to believers who have prepared for this by fasting, intense prayer, and Confession.

Lebedev K.V. Communion of the people

A slightly different rite is the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts of St. Gregory. Here the faithful are given the previously consecrated Holy Gifts. Since ancient times, the custom has been established to perform such a service only during Great Lent, on Wednesdays and Fridays, since the full liturgy at this time is served only on Saturdays and Sundays, and believers may also require Communion on other days of the week. Many theologians believe that the rite of the service is closer to Vespers. This is no coincidence, because according to the Charter it is performed in the evening (in practice, most often in the morning).

In what order is it usually performed in the temple?

Since ancient times, the service has been preceded by 3 and 6 hours. This is followed by the “liturgy of the catechumens,” which ends after the reading of the Gospel. The last, most important part of the service is the Sacrament of the Eucharist itself.

History, origin of worship

According to the “Acts of the Apostles”, the first Christians, including the Lord’s disciples themselves, visited the Jerusalem Temple unacceptably. For example, it is known that St. It was at his door that Peter and John healed a man who had suffered from lameness since childhood (Acts 3:6-7). However, already at the time of the same Apostles, Christians also had their own liturgical meetings.

Small Catacomb Church of the 4th century. The oldest throne preserved in Bethlehem, the remains of the Bethlehem babies are buried in it

According to surviving documents, as well as some liturgical texts, these were night prayers that lasted until dawn. Most of the chants were Psalms, which were also used during the temple worship of the Jews. The “core” of the service, according to Christ’s commandment “do this in My remembrance,” was the sacrament of the Eucharist, the communion of His Body and Blood.

Subsequently, after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple, Christian services were completely separated from Jewish ones, and their order and order were formed.

Nowadays, the well-known Orthodox worship took shape in the 4th-6th centuries, when persecution of the Church ceased. It was then that the Church, where many newly converted laity came, needed a coherent liturgical order.

To date, there are services of Western (Catholic, Protestant) and Eastern (Orthodox) traditions. Each of them has its own characteristic features.

Features of Orthodox worship

These include:

  • integrity, continuity of service - in contrast to Protestant prayer meetings, consisting of loosely connected parts, reading Scripture, prayer, sermons;
  • its deep symbolism: the service connects the worshiper with the events of the Old and New Testaments, first of all - the life of the Lord Himself;
  • since worship is not so much an edification for Christians as a direct communion with God, another of its features follows from this: it is impossible to “stand” before the Creator of the Universe while sitting on a bench, just as is customary among Catholics or Protestants; Orthodox churches have a small number of seats, but they are intended for the infirm;
  • Another expression of intense presence before God is that the Bible is always read facing the most sacred place of the temple, the throne (hence, with its back to the people ahead), while among Catholics and Protestants the reader addresses the Christians present.
