Saints are the source of male names endowed with special energy. Every mother wants a happy and easy life for her baby, so she carefully chooses a name for the newborn, turning to the church calendar for help. It is believed that a boy whose angel day (name day) coincides with his birth date will be a lucky and successful person who will always be protected by the saint after whom he was named.
Today, male names Roman, Artem, Vladimir, Maxim, Alexander and Alexey are the most popular. Often parents give their son an Orthodox name, which means victory: Victor, Nikita, Nikolai. Beautiful and rare male versions: Plato, Theodosius, Prokofiy, Varlaam, Benjamin, Vissarion, Hilarion. Original Russian male names: Vladislav, Mstislav, Yaroslav, Svyatoslav, Vyacheslav, Vsevolod, Boris, Stanislav, Rostislav.
How to name your son according to the calendar?
The child's name must be consistent with his patronymic and surname. The choice depends on the baby’s date of birth, as well as the preferences of the child’s mother and current trends.
Naming according to Christian canons occurs on the eighth day after the birth of the baby, but parents can be guided by the nearest dates if they do not like the names indicated on these numbers. You can name the boy after the heavenly patron who is most revered by the mother and father of the child.
The baptism of a newborn usually occurs on the fortieth day after birth, so the boy is given the name of the saint who is revered according to church canons on this day.
Parents should not only know the characteristics of the name they decided to name their son, but also carefully study the life history of the saint in whose honor they named the boy. The child will be connected by invisible ties with his heavenly patron and will be able to turn to him when the soul is especially hard and faith in God weakens. The saint will help a man in any situation and send down blessings and vital energy for further achievements.
Priests strongly do not recommend naming a child in honor of their relatives, whose death was tragic, since the boy will have a difficult life and he may repeat their fate. It is also not recommended to choose the names of the great martyrs, so as not to doom your son to a life full of suffering and deprivation.

Statusname
The tradition of giving young children the name of a hero of the faith originated in the first centuries of our era. Some names were passed down from generation to generation, for example, Jacob, Abraham, Isaac. Some were included in the Saints only thanks to people elevated to the rank of saints. For example, the baptizer of Rus', Prince Vladimir, received the name Vasily during the baptismal ceremony, and Princess Olga accepted the faith as Elena. This second name was the connecting thread connecting the Christian and his intercessor (saint or martyr). For a long time, the general list of available names consisted of names from the Great Roman Empire - these were Romans, Greeks, Persians, Syrians and Jews who suffered for their faith in God.
At the time of the emergence of Christianity, five dioceses were formed:
- Antioch;
- Constantinople;
- Roman;
- Alexandria;
- Jerusalem.
Due to the different areas of existence, the first churchgoers were called by popular names. Later, synodics were created, where the names of deceased relatives and friends, bishops and patriarchs were entered.
The custom of naming after a saint was officially legalized only in the 6th century AD. Around the same time, the Saints were formed.
Orthodox names
In the Russian Orthodox Church they also rely on the Saints, but if the name is not in the collection, then they most often take something similar in sound. For example, the Christian name for a boy, Yang, is replaced by John.
The bulk of Orthodox names were Byzantine-Greek (Nicholas, Peter, Vasily). However, with the adoption of Christianity in Rus', the list was expanded - the Slavic Yaroslav, Svyatoslav, Mstislav, Rostislav, Vyacheslav and the Scandinavian Oleg were added. Also included are names of Latin origin Sergei, Pavel, Victor and Hebrew names Gabriel, Daniel.
For Orthodox Georgians, the Hebrew, Latin and Greek names Grigoli, Giorgi, Ioane, David, Mose are typical. They began to be used after their adoption in the 5th century AD. people of Christianity. Thanks to the annexation of Georgia and the cooperation of the churches of two formerly separate states in the 19th century, three dozen unusual names appeared in the Russian month, such as Aviv, Gobron, Shalva, Shio. In turn, Georgians began to name their children at baptism, focusing on the Saints. They also take into account all the local saints included in the special Christian calendar of boys’ names; examples include the names Ashot and Vakhtang.
Among the Greeks there are also many representatives of the Orthodox Church, but they have their own naming traditions. Thus, the first-born males are called like the paternal grandfather, and the second son in the family is called the maternal grandfather. If the same parents have 3 or more sons, then the name is assigned arbitrarily, but there is one unspoken rule - “do not name the children as the father.” Most of the names of the saints listed in special reference books by the Greeks are familiar to us - these are Luke, Athanasius, Gregory, the Russian version of “Dmitry” in Greek takes the form “Dimitri” with a soft vowel “d”.
Catholic names
From the moment of the emergence of Christianity until the 9th century, disagreements between adherents of the same faith were brewing, and in the 11th century the Eastern Catholic and Roman Catholic Churches were formed. From that time to the present day in Catholicism, along with the acceptance of the main features of Christian teaching, certain individual dogmas and traditions of the movement can be traced, including regarding naming.
The adherents of the Catholic Church are called similarly to the Orthodox - with the help of the Saints. Some Christian male names coincide with Orthodox ones, since before the schism everyone used common collections and calendars. The bulk of them were those mentioned in the Bible. Thanks to the invasion of Germanic tribes, after the organization of a separate branch of Christianity, Adolf, Siegfried and Bernard appeared in Catholic collections.
During the Crusades, passion for religion declines, most traditions and rituals cease to be observed, and saints are no longer so revered. However, in the Middle Ages, not without the help of Pope Gregory VII, the cult of martyrs and saints returned, interest in the religious component increased in Europe, and children began to be named according to special lists and calendars.
Protestant names
In the 16th century, Protestantism arose as an opposition to Catholicism, which was recognized as having departed from the original Christian dogmas. It was a real religious revolution, later called one of the stages of the Reformation under the leadership of Martin Luther.
The “newly minted” began to more actively use names from the Old Testament - Samuel (Samuel), Benjamin (Benjamin), Abraham (Abraham). Moreover, since Protestantism, the most inventive Protestants decided to completely eradicate all objectionable names - and they began to call children with English abstract concepts (one of the worthy examples in the female sex is Charity (Charity) - from the English charity - charity, mercy). But there were Puritans who were even more sophisticated - those who called their children with a compound name - Bleib treu - from German "be faithful" (to their religion) - today this combination has migrated to the surnames of Europeans, Tode die Sinde – from German “kill sin”).
Interestingly, it is not customary for Protestants to venerate saints and martyrs. Another shocking tradition for any Orthodox or Catholic can be the rite of baptism already at a conscious age. The Puritans do not encourage performing this ritual with children, since it is believed that they will still go to heaven. To carry out the ritual, the boy or girl must be of a conscious age and able to accept repentance.
Common Christian names
Common to all three traditions are the names Alexander (sometimes develops into the short “Alex”), Peter (Peter, Peter), Ivan (John - among the English, Ioannis - among the Greeks, Ioane - among the Georgians), Pavel. They can be seen in the Old and New Testaments, in particular, John, Paul and Peter are the names of 3 of the 4 apostles. The commonality is explained by the late development of Protestantism (XIV century) and Catholicism (XI century) into separate directions.
Conclusion
So, through the study of historical facts and theories, we discovered that the choice of a beautiful Christian name for a boy is done in different ways in all religious movements. Most often, parents do not pay attention to the origin of the name; it is important for them that the name is allowed within the framework of their confession.
Remember that even if you like a name, but it is not in the Saints, you can always give the child something consonant with or related to the date of birth, then the child will be protected throughout his earthly life (if you believe Orthodox and Catholic custom).
Which Saints have Orthodox church names?
In modern times, it is customary to categorize all Saints under one umbrella and simply say, “This is an Orthodox church name.” But the fact is that in fact all names are divided into categories depending on who they belonged to. Moreover, the Saints themselves were at one time divided into several categories. More precisely, as many as ten categories.
The division depends on the nature of the Christian deeds that were performed by the Saints. Traditionally, the church divides them into faces, or categories, in simple terms. That is, Orthodox church names, in accordance with this statement, are divided into names:
- Prophets - God's chosen ones to whom He revealed His will;
- The Apostles are the first disciples of Jesus Christ, and they all belong to the first twelve disciples, who became the Apostles;
- The Enlighteners and Equal-to-the-Apostles are, for the most part, Saints who, with their preaching, brought to Christ entire nations and states that had not previously believed in Christ and his deeds;
- Saints - among their small number are shepherds, fathers, and as such teachers of the Church, who were able to receive the grace of the Holy Spirit from the apostles;
- Martyrs, Great Martyrs, Confessors, and Passion-Bearers - for the most part, these are Saints who suffered martyrdom, or who experienced severe persecution specifically because of the Christian faith;
- Reverends - and these are mostly Holy people who sacrificed their own worldly goods, family and social relationships, statuses and more in the name of faith in God and Christianity;
- Bessrebrenikov - here we are already talking about the Saints who served sacrificially and unselfishly to everyone who needed help (the poor, the sick and the suffering);
- Blessed - Saints who received the gifts of miracles and prophecy, despite persecution, reproach and renunciation of their usual way of life;
- The righteous - those who pleased God and the Christian faith, but at the same time did not sacrifice either their way of life or other values;
- The faithful - this group includes rulers, kings, and princes.
In other words, among the Orthodox Church names there are many that belonged to Saints assigned to different ranks. But you should not think that certain faces have less or worse energy in comparison with other names. In this regard, Christian names are not divided.
For reference: not all saints, whose names were included in the church Orthodox name book, are described by history, and not all of their exploits were described in the scriptures. In the name book there are quite a lot of names of Saints who were included in the name book, but were not described, either in terms of deeds or in terms of face.
What are saints?
Saints - Orthodox church calendar. This is a liturgical index book displaying the annual cycle of church holidays and the days of remembrance of saints. It also contains calendar liturgical instructions and prayer chants in honor of God's saints. The Saints (female and male) are also called the Monthly Word.

Prototypes of the calendar appeared in early Christianity. Church communities kept their own chronicles, including the days of remembrance of saints (many of them were martyrs). Since the first monthly words were created exclusively for local use, their content varied significantly. In the Middle Ages, the calendar was gradually united for general church use.
At the end of the 10th century, Rus' adopted Christianity and borrowed church books, including Orthodox calendars, from Byzantium. Over time, they began to be supplemented with events and names of saints of our history. This is how the Russian month book was formed.
