The hill above Georgievsky Prospekt, not far from the village of Kamenka, was identified as the site for the construction of an Orthodox church when designing the new 17th microdistrict of the city of Zelenograd.
The project, which passed public hearings in January 2015, provided for the construction of a church with a clergy house, which was planned to house a refectory, a Sunday school for children, administrative and household premises.
The location of the temple is illuminated by history. There was a defensive line here during the Great Patriotic War. The foundation stone of the temple took place in honor of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious.
Church of St. George the Victorious in Zelenograd today
The main task of the temple is to become a church within walking distance for residents of the 17th microdistrict. The project of the temple complex was finally agreed upon in August 2022. The basis for the construction was the “Program 200”, which envisages the construction of 200 churches in Moscow.
Church of St. George the Victorious in Zelenograd
The buildings are erected with donations from individuals and organizations. The role of the Moscow government is to provide free plots for construction and lay communications. Therefore, the speed of construction directly depends on fundraising.
The Church of St. George the Victorious in Zelenograd is named after the holy great martyr, most revered in the Christian world. Saint George was extremely popular during early Christianity. It is believed that he patronized warriors, farmers, and cattle breeders.
At the moment, on the site of the temple complex for 700 believers there is a temporary one-story church. The prefabricated structure was previously located in Strogino and was the beginning of the Church of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.
Today, on the territory of the Patriarchal Metochion of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious, in addition to the temporary church building, there are several cabins and a small Sunday school building. There is also a small flower garden here.
The church was erected in a new location in the summer of 2022, and the first liturgy was served in the church on August 27, 2022 by the dean of the Zelenograd district, Archpriest Konstantin Mikhailov.
The main decoration of the temporary temple is the ringing of the bells of its small belfry. Percussion instruments were donated to the temple by the Orthodox youth association “Bell”. There is an icon shop at the temple. Here you can buy candles, both simple and souvenir, and small icons.
Will there be a new temple in the 16th microdistrict of Zelenograd?
For several years now, Zelenograd residents and city guests walking along Panfilovsky Avenue in the 16th district have been concerned about the long-term construction next to the wooden church of St. Sergius of Radonezh. For a long time, this small temple, built back in 1998 as a chapel, was the only refuge for believers who found themselves in Novy Kryukovo. Until May 17, 2022, he was assigned to the Church of St. Nicholas of Myra in Rzhavki. Then to the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh was given temporary status at the Church of the Archangel Michael, the Patriarchal Metochion, under construction in Zelenograd. The temple is no longer ascribed and has an independent status.
But for the majority of Zelenograd residents in May 2022, outwardly nothing has changed. A construction site surrounded by a fence, concrete slabs on the ground... And all this in the center of a populous area, near a busy city highway, opposite large stores and a shopping center. And after the Legends of Crimea festival site was built in the walking area of the 16th district at the end of 2022, the dissonance became especially noticeable. Questions from ordinary citizens: “Why is this unfinished construction here? And when will it finally end and a new temple will appear?” – became especially acute. Let's answer them in order.
As mentioned above, the need for a new, larger temple has been long overdue. A site was allocated and its solemn consecration took place on July 18, 2016. A memorial stone was erected at this place. Then we started looking for funds. And when at the temple of St. Sergius of Radonezh finally had a benefactor, the head of the construction industry, and the parishioners began to have hope. A project for a new large-scale temple was developed, preparatory work began - electricity was installed, the construction site was fenced, and those same concrete slabs were delivered. But the economic situation changed once again, and the benefactor found this construction project beyond his means. It turned out that the church was unable to build and then maintain such a large-scale temple as originally planned. But under no circumstances was it possible to refuse to build a new temple! We started developing a new project. The cost of work on the project was 6 million rubles, and this money was collected. The bulk of the funds were donated by ordinary parishioners who are looking forward to the new church. Why did the project cost so much? In construction, everything is not so simple. Those houses that citizens see are, in a literal sense, just the tip of the iceberg. Under the ground, kilometers of life support communications stretch to the foundations of buildings, without which modern life with the usual amenities is impossible. The new temple still had to fit into the already established engineering infrastructure of the neighboring microdistricts. Therefore, the development of a new project required significant funds and took a long time, during which the townspeople observed this long-term construction. This is how we answered the first question.
But the fact that we have sorted out the question of why the long-term construction arose does not make it any easier for the townspeople. Now we need an answer to an equally important question: “When will the new temple be built?”
At the moment (April 2022) - the situation with the project of the new temple is as follows - the project has undergone an examination. After the final execution of the land lease agreement, an expert opinion will be received, which will allow obtaining a building permit. The agreement on the part of the Podvorye was signed and sent to the Department of City Property of the City of Moscow (DGI) for registration in Rosreestr. Plans are being developed for the technological connection of the facility to heat supply, water supply and sewerage networks. The necessary working documentation is being designed. Other necessary permits have also been obtained, for example from the Federal Air Transport Agency. It is needed because the temple will be a high-rise building, its bell towers will rise to a height of 43 meters (about the same as a 14-story building). So everything possible is being done.
But in order to move directly to the first stage of construction: the foundation, ground floor and utilities, 42 million rubles are needed. Moreover, 35 million is directly for the work, and 7 million rubles is VAT, which, as you know, is now 20%. The entire construction is estimated at 360 million rubles. A modest wooden temple does not have that kind of money.
The temple activists are now intensively looking for all kinds of grants and benefactors who could at least partially sponsor the new temple. But none have been found yet. So the answer to the second question: “When will there be a new temple in the 16th region?” Now it directly depends on us, Zelenograd residents. Or rather, from our goodwill, donate as little as we can for the construction. Until a benefactor is found who wants to immortalize himself in the memory of Zelenograd residents by contributing to the construction, the temple will have to be built by the whole world. Having contributed 500 rubles, each donor will receive, in gratitude from the temple, an artistic personalized certificate of the Benefactor, and a brick signed with his name. This personal brick will be laid in the walls of the new temple, and the name will go along with the temple through the years. As long as the temple stands, the names of the benefactors and benefactors of this holy temple will be forever remembered at the daily Liturgy. Personalized bricks will be stored on the temple grounds in a special reliquary so that donors can see their names. The bricks will then be handed over to the builders.
It is possible to donate not only on your own behalf, but also on behalf of deceased relatives. This is quite a fitting way to remember your loved ones with something other than a memorial note and a candle. The deceased will also be included in the lists of eternal remembrance. The name of a person close to you who has passed away will also be written on a special personalized brick, which will be placed in the walls of the Church of the Archangel Michael, which is under construction. By making a donation, you will receive a Memorial Certificate, which means that loved ones remember the deceased and care about the repose of his soul. You can purchase a personalized brick and receive a certificate in three places:
— In the 16th district, in the church shop at the temple. Daily.
— In the 16th district, at the farmer's fair, in the next building next to the temple. Find the counter of the Temple of St. Sergius of Radonezh and contact the seller. Daily.
— In the lobby of the Perekrestok store in the 15th district. Our volunteers will work there on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays from 12 to 20.00 - with the permission of the store administration. I would like to say something special about them. These are ordinary parishioners of the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh. They spend whole days in the hustle and bustle of a big store, but, as one of the female volunteers said:
- I have a lot of worries at home - my old mother, children, grandchildren. Talking about the coronavirus also does not add calm, because we are standing in the very crowd. But I put aside my affairs and fears, and I stand here for the sake of a big thing - a new temple. Look at the project, how beautiful it will be!
Support these modern ascetics, because now it depends on us how soon the new temple of the Archangel Michael will be built in honor of the soldiers who defended Russia.
Compare the photo of the old and the design of the new temple, and you will understand that the woman volunteer is right. The new temple is very beautiful. It will fit perfectly into the surrounding landscape and will delight Zelenograd residents with its appearance for many years. And a donation of 500 rubles, in modern times, is not such a large amount for many.
If you are more accustomed to making payments via the Internet, then on the main page of the temple website, under the news, there is a section “The Most Important”, which details how to make an online donation to individuals and organizations.

Architect, exterior decoration, architectural ensemble
According to the architects' design, the temple is supposed to be built in the aesthetics of the Russian North. They decided to borrow the design of future pitched galvanized gable roofs from ancient Russian church architecture. The motifs of churches in the Arkhangelsk, Vologda, Pskov, and Novgorod regions were also taken as a basis.
The building of the future permanent temple is planned to be built in the likeness of the Church of the Holy Righteous John of Kronstadt, erected in the north-west of Moscow, in the Golovinsky district.
The draft version of the Church of St. George the Victorious in Zelenograd was commissioned from the Union of Architects of Russia. The project was developed by a group of designers from a creative workshop under the direction of the famous church architect Alexei Anatolyevich Mamonov.
Sketch of the future Church of St. George the Victorious in Zelenograd
According to the project of A. A. Mamonov, it is planned to build the main building of the church, next to which the parish house will be located. The belfry will connect the church and the parish house into a single whole, under which there will be an arched gate for the religious procession around the church.
According to the architect's plan, the main part of the interior space will be allocated to an extensive refectory. The eastern part of the interior is given over to the most important part of the church - the altar. In the side aisles there are planned premises for the altar and sacristy.
The project includes a baptismal church and a parish block. They will be located in the basement of the future church. It is planned to open Sunday school classes in the utility rooms, and there will also be a hall for general meetings and various holidays for children and their parents. There are also rooms in this part of the church for the parish office.
History of construction
Construction of the main building is at the ground floor stage. The foundation stone of the temple complex was consecrated on December 19, 2020 by the vicar of His Holiness the Patriarch, Bishop Paramon of Naro-Fominsk.
The temple, the clergy house and the entire church territory will occupy an area of 0.5 hectares. The estimated length of the future structure will be 26 m, and the height will be 17.7 m. The temporary church, which has already been erected on the territory of the Church of St. George the Pobendonosets in Zelenograd, is made of laminated veneer lumber.
The load-bearing structures will also be built from timber, and in the future the assembled frame will be covered with brick. The main wooden structure was ordered immediately for the domes, which will significantly reduce construction time. The temple can be assembled in a few days.
In existing parishes in Zelenograd, charitable donations were announced for the construction of a new church. In total, it is necessary to collect 4-5 million rubles. Volunteers from among Orthodox youth joined in fundraising. They not only collected voluntary contributions, but also participated in cleaning the territory and preparing it for the construction of the church.
The construction of the temple in the name of the Archangel Michael is financed by a private investor - the group and charitable foundation “Ivanovo Delo”. On Monday, July 18 at 15:30, the consecration of the foundation stone will take place on the territory of the future temple; everyone is invited to this ceremony, the press service of the Sapsan Group of Companies told Zelenograd.ru. A prayer service will also be held here.
The site on Panfilovsky Avenue, allocated for the construction of an Orthodox church, has been empty for five years. Construction was planned to begin in April 2011, but the process was delayed due to the registration of permits. At the initiative of investors, changes were made to the project. In particular, it was decided whether to build the second floor with or without supporting columns - a new design scheme was developed at the Central Research Institute of Building Structures named after. V.A. Kucherenko.
Changes were made to the project in order to leave the nearby wooden temple of St. Sergius of Radonezh, said Vladimir Trapezov, head of the temple design. At least during construction, this church will be left in place.
The complex will include a five-domed two-level temple, a baptistery, a Sunday school, church shops, an archive, a library, a meeting room, a refectory, a medical center, a mother and child room, and utility rooms. The internal architectural solution has a number of innovations - the pillarless design of the central dome and glazing with an area of 500 square meters. This will visually expand the space and create light and color effects. The area of the complex is more than 6 thousand square meters. meters. According to existing standards (at least 4 square meters per person), the upper and lower parts of the temple will accommodate 1540 people, but in fact 3 thousand can fit there. According to the original design, the temple was designed for 4 thousand parishioners. A parking lot with 28 spaces will be built near the temple.
The temple can be built in three years if the required amount is raised—approximately 2 billion rubles. The zero construction cycle alone is estimated at 120 million. You can’t just count on investor money, given the financial crisis, but it’s planned to build the temple with donations from parishioners. For now we are talking about preparatory construction work.
There are now five Orthodox churches in Zelenograd. “This is a drop in the ocean, because by any calculation we need at least ten churches,” Konstantin Mikhailov, dean of the churches of the Zelenograd district, said earlier. — We somehow decided to count the number of parishioners on Holy Saturday and Holy Easter. Of course, these were approximate figures; some came twice, and some went to churches near Moscow, but that’s almost 40 thousand people. Now the total capacity of our churches is a maximum of 500-700 parishioners.”
Interior decoration
The snow-white church complex is the future of the Church of St. George the Victorious. At the moment, its interior decoration and appearance are of no interest to pilgrims, because it is very modest. There are no relics or particularly revered shrines here.
There is a large cross in the prayer hall, and icons transferred from other parishes and donated by parishioners are hung on the walls. An iconostasis is visible on the walls; burning lamps hang in front of the icons.
