The Temple of the Prophet Elijah in Obydensky Lane was built in the Baroque architectural style. It is located near the Church of Christ the Savior. The construction of the temple took place with the support of the architect I. Zarudny in 1702. The church is quite popular among Orthodox believers. It is visited daily by a fairly large number of parishioners. Like many churches, this temple has its own secret.
Some historical facts
This building, like many similar churches of that period, was built in the “ship” architectural style. Before the modern temple was built, there was an old church on this site, which was built from wooden building materials. The first church was here in the 15th century.
There is a legend that in those ancient times a prince passed by this place where the church stands today. At one point, for no apparent reason, a strong thunderstorm began. The prince made a promise that if he survived and did not die, he would definitely build a temple on this site in honor of the Prophet Elijah. There is no exact data on when it was built, but according to some documents, the approximate date of construction is 1592.

It should also be noted that the name of the temple itself has been preserved. He always had special respect among the city residents. According to historical facts, during droughts and bad weather, crusades led by the king were carried out around it. In 1702, a stone church was built on the site of the wooden church.
The new temple was built by the Derevnin brothers. According to legend, they say that they wanted to close the church in June 1941, but this never happened due to the outbreak of war.
History of creation
In the 14th century, the Elias Church appeared in Cherkizovo. This village got its name thanks to its owner, Tsarevich Serkizi. Over time, he sold his property to Ilya Ozakov, a fellow native of the Golden Horde. He was a baptized Tatar and everyone knew him as a rather pious person. Thanks to him, the temple appeared, which he named in honor of his heavenly patron.
This church was built in a very picturesque corner on the banks of the Sosenka River. Together with his brother Ilya, they were servants of Metropolitan Alexy. It was to him that the ownership of Ilya Ozakov passed. The location of the temple was very much to the liking of the Metropolitan and he made it the summer residence of the Moscow patriarchs. The monastery achieved its greatest growth and development under St. Innocent.

In 1689-1690, a stone temple was erected on the site of an old burnt wooden church. It was consecrated on June 18, 1690. During the 20th century, the temple was restored twice:
- 1821-1825 - for some time it became five-domed.
- some letters said that reconstruction of the temple was necessary. The project was made public in 1888, and already in the 90s the consecration took place.
The cemetery of this temple is a kind of necropolis, which was able to withstand destruction during the Soviet era. In addition, the famous Moscow holy fool Ivan Yakovlevich Koreysha is buried here.
They managed to survive the Soviet period by cunning. The clergy collected 1 million funds and sent them to Stalin. Thus the monastery was taken under control. Also, icons were brought here that were going to be destroyed.
The main shrines include:
- icon "Assumption",
- Icon "Life-Giving Spring"
- image “Healing of St. Alexy Tanduly"
- icon of Our Lady of Jerusalem,
- icon of the seven youths of Ephesus with parts of relics,
- Athos copy of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God.
Temple shrines
To this day, the church with the Belt of the Virgin Mary on Obydensky Lane houses a fairly large number of miraculous icons. Some of the most revered are:
- image of the Virgin Mary “Unexpected Joy”,
- "Fedorovskaya",
- "Vladimirskaya".
Also in the temple were found such revered icons as “The Fiery Ascension of the Holy Prophet Elijah” and “The Savior Not Made by Hands”. In the church you can bow before the images of Our Lady of Kazan, St. Seraphim with particles of relics and many other holy images.
Chronicle
The history of the temple began in the 14th century. The owner of the village of Cherkizovo, Ilya Ozakov, erected a wooden five-domed church on the river bank and named it in honor of his guardian angel. Soon, Moscow Metropolitan Alexy bought the village along with the church and established his summer residence there, transferring it to the ownership of the Peipus Monastery. The temple and the house of the patriarch, built nearby, formed an amazing ensemble of wooden architecture. Subsequent patriarchs continued to develop and equip the monastery, regularly coming there for summer holidays.
At the beginning of the 16th century, during the Time of Troubles, the Elias Church was burned, but was soon rebuilt. After another fire that destroyed the buildings, a stone church was erected in 1689-1690 under Metropolitan Adrian. The new church became single-domed with a refectory and a bell tower. New chapels were built - St. Alexius and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Since that time, the temple has a second name - Holy Cross.
In 1821-1825, during reconstruction, the temple was expanded and again became five-domed. All work on the reconstruction of the building was carried out very carefully, trying not to damage the unique structures of past years. By the end of the 19th century, the Cherkizovo settlement increased significantly, and the question arose about a new reconstruction of the building. In 1890, the reconstruction was completed, the single-domed dome was restored and a new bell tower was erected. The temple was re-consecrated by Moscow Patriarch Innocent. Under his leadership, the Metropolitan's house was also rebuilt.
During Soviet times, the Church of Elijah the Prophet was lucky - it was not demolished or closed, like most churches throughout Russia. Only in the thirties were all the bells removed from the belfry. During the Great Patriotic War, the church ministers and parishioners collected one million rubles to build an airplane. Stalin appreciated the patriotism of the priests and residents of Cherkizov, expressing his gratitude. Perhaps this fact played a decisive role in the decision to preserve the temple. The church remained active and services did not stop for a single day. Icons and other Orthodox valuables were brought to the monastery from closed and destroyed churches.
By the eighties of the last century, the buildings had become so dilapidated that the temple was on the verge of complete destruction. In 1982, restoration of the cathedral and its interior began. In the nineties, fires destroyed the residence of the metropolitans. Serious reconstruction of the entire complex of buildings belonging to the Temple of the Prophet Elijah began only in the 21st century. In 2006, the church again acquired bells cast at the ZIL plant. Other temple buildings are gradually being restored, including the patriarchal residence.
