Icon of the Matrona of Moscow - where is it located, photo, what does it help with?

Saint Matrona is the most beloved and especially revered saint by the people. From birth, the Lord rewarded the girl with miracles, depriving her of the most important thing - the opportunity to see the world with her own eyes. But this did not stop the girl from devoting herself to spirituality and sharing her knowledge with other people. She could quickly read people's thoughts, saw pictures of their sins, treated illnesses with prayers, strengthened faith in God, and saved them from imminent death. Her path on Earth is one of many great feats of patience, devotion and faith.

The Matrona of Moscow icon is in every Orthodox church; it also protects the home of believing families. Every year on the second of May, all believers celebrate the day of remembrance of the great saint.

Icon of Matrona of Moscow

Matronushka, blessed Matrona, is a saint who went to Heaven quite recently, in 1952. She was blind from birth, and at the age of 17 her legs were paralyzed, but she did not complain to God for her illnesses, she prayed a lot and from childhood wanted to help people: that is why, as a child, she showed people the gift of working miracles.

On the icon, Matrona of Moscow is depicted with her eyes closed - as her contemporaries remembered her - in a green or yellow loose jacket and a white scarf, which she wore during her lifetime. Moscow churches and monasteries are often painted behind her.

Matronushka, going to the Lord, said to people who were grieving for her: “Come everyone to me and talk as if you were alive. I will hear everyone and help everyone.” To come means not only to visit the relics and icons of the saint, but also to mentally come to her in prayer.

Image of Blessed Matrona and Stalin

In 2008, an image appeared in one of the churches in St. Petersburg illustrating Stalin’s visit to Blessed Matrona. Later, this plot was replicated in some of the hagiographic icons of the old woman.

Hieromoah Job (Gumerov), who was officially involved in collecting information for the canonization of Blessed Matrona, believes that such a meeting was impossible, therefore the Orthodox Church does not recognize this image as canonically and historically correct.

Hieromonk Job (Gumerov): “There is ... a story: when at the beginning of the war Stalin was preparing to leave Moscow, supply engineer Nikita Ermakov, who was bringing food to the Kremlin, “managed to approach him and say that there is such a blessed mother Matrona, perspicacious, who can tell you what to do: leave or not.” The story is absolutely fantastic. The author of this fiction does not have the slightest idea how the party and state machine of that time worked. This was in 1941, when active propaganda of atheism continued. Even after 1943, when the policy towards the Church softened a little, it is impossible that the supplier could freely go to I. Stalin, talk about the blessed one, tell him the address, and he went to her incognito.”

short biography

The future saint and blessed Matrona Dmitrievna Nikonova was born in 1881 in the small village of Sebino, located near the city of Tula. Matrona's parents were poor peasants and raised three more children. The girl was born blind, and her best friends were the icons with whom she talked for a long time. She lived the rest of her life, deprived of sight, but she amazed those around her with her inner strength and ability to find the right path (lifetime photo of the saint):

From an early age, Matrona showed love for church services and prayers, and considered the temple her second home. Even as a child, she discovered the gift of foresight and healing. People in need of help constantly came to the house where the girl lived. As a token of gratitude, they brought things and food, so the Nikonov family was able to survive in conditions of extreme poverty.

At the age of 17, Matrona lost her legs completely. After the October Revolution she moved to Moscow. Here, despite the persecution of the Soviet regime, Mother continued to receive the suffering and sick. During this period, she made many predictions regarding the Great Patriotic War and the future fate of Russia.

Saint Matrona of Moscow lived 70 years. In May 1952, the blessed old woman died. She knew about her death in advance, but until the last day of her earthly life she did not stop receiving visitors. Matrona was buried at the Danilovsky cemetery. In 1998, the relics of the blessed one were transferred to the Holy Intercession Monastery. A year later, Matrona of Moscow was glorified as a saint, and in 2004 her church-wide canonization took place.

Icon of the Matrona of Moscow in the Intercession Monastery

The Intercession Monastery on Taganka in Moscow is a convent where the relics of the saint and her images - holy icons - now reside. Interestingly, there is a written image on the wall of the monastery. Come to the icon and relics of St. Matrona of Moscow with roses (of course, preferably an odd number) - St. Matronushka loved them during her lifetime - place them near the icon or at the relics.

Buy church candles and before the image of the blessed one in the temple, read the prayer according to the text below. Talk to her as if she were alive - that’s what she asked herself. Place a pre-written note behind the icon, under the icon, or push it into a slot in the icon case (you can write a note right in the temple). Before or after prayer, light a candle from other candles in a candlestick, place it, cross yourself twice, bow and kiss the image of the saint on the hand or hem of the robe, cross yourself again and bow.

When people stand in line to see the saint’s relics, everyone worships the image on the wall and prays to the Matronushka in front of it. Often there is no strength to stand in a long line to see the relics, and people simply pray at the icon - and, of course, Matronushka helps everyone. You can also purchase in the church an icon of Matronushka for home prayer and church candles, which you will light during prayer at home.

How to properly place the image in the house?

Be sure to place the saint’s face on the iconostasis in the Red Corner, which is located on the eastern side of the house and is located opposite the entrance. The icon should be positioned so that a person entering the house immediately draws attention to the face of the saint.

Often the icon is covered with white cloth on both sides, decorated with embroidered flowers. Near the face it is allowed to keep Holy Scriptures, candles and other items that are important for performing daily prayer.

Matrona Moscow icon meaning – up to 800 characters.

Like many saints, from birth the saint was accompanied by signs of God's grace: Matronushka's mother, Natalya, in a dream saw a beautiful but blind white bird that landed on her chest. Natalya immediately realized that this was a prophetic dream from the Lord, and left the child in the family. Since childhood, the blessed one prayed a lot in church and at home, and attended divine services. At the age of 17, Matronushka lost her legs, but the Lord rewarded her with the gift of healing and insight.

Therefore, in the icon the saint is depicted with her eyes closed - physically blind, but spiritually sighted.

There is a tradition of going to Matronushka for help with flowers - a living offering to her, evidence of the sincerity of your prayer and love for the saint. You will definitely feel that Matrona of Moscow becomes like family to you, as for many people - that’s why she is affectionately called Matronushka. In the Pokrovsky Monastery there are always many bouquets of fresh flowers around the shrine (tomb) with the holy relics of the blessed one. Often priests give their blessing to take flowers laid by other people who are seriously suffering and ill as a gift from the Matrona of Moscow herself.

Remember that saints hear our prayer not only near their icons or relics. Like the Lord, Saint Matrona is always nearby and hears the call of the heart.

Every day about 40 people came to the saint for help; she spent the night in prayer, dozing only occasionally. With humility, she bore the heavy cross of bodily infirmities and did not grumble, but accepted God’s will for herself. She received many, helped everyone with prophetic advice, and at night she prayed for everyone. She died in 1952. By traditional standards, Saint Matrona of Moscow was canonized soon after her death - in 1999.

What does it help with?

Before asking the elder for help, you need to turn to Jesus and the Virgin Mary in prayer. Only after this can you pray to mother so that she will assist in fulfilling the prayer before the Lord.

You can turn to the saint not only during divine services; the power of prayer does not become less at home near the icon of the saint. What is important is not the situation that surrounds a person, but firm faith in the Lord and that he will be heard.

  • Very often Matronushka helps women who cannot find personal happiness. They ask the saint for help in order to meet a worthy spouse and give birth to healthy children.

The saint is popularly considered a noble patroness. People turn to her with any unresolved issue, and she will definitely help you find the right path. Prayer is very powerful in its power.

Important! During her lifetime, the saint did not refuse anyone, fulfilling every everyday or serious request. But she categorically forbade people asking for help to simultaneously pray to God and go to magicians, psychics and other supporters of dark forces. Otherwise, Matronushka will not help and will turn away from such a family.

Parishioners who have committed a terrible sin often turn to the miracle worker with a request to beg forgiveness from God. The saint especially protects orphans, who have been deprived of maternal love since birth. She will help everyone find their home and fill it with love.

Prayers to the Holy Blessed Matrona

Video with the text of the prayer:

Prayer 1

Oh, blessed Mother Matrona, standing with her soul in Heaven before the Throne of God, resting with her body on earth and exuding various miracles with the grace given to you from above! Look now with your merciful eye on us sinners, spending our days in sorrows, illnesses and sinful temptations; comfort us, the despairing, heal our grave ailments, allowed by God to us because of our sins, deliver us from many troubles and misfortunes, beg our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us all our sins, iniquities and falls, which we have suffered from our youth even to the present day and hour we have sinned, so that through your prayers, having received grace and great mercy, we glorify in the Trinity the One God, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer for the gift of a child

Oh, blessed Mother Matrona, we resort to your intercession and tearfully pray to you. As one who has great boldness in the Lord, pour out a warm prayer for your servants, who are in deep spiritual sorrow and asking for help for you. Truly is the word of the Lord: ask, and it will be given to you, and again: even if two of you give counsel to the earth, whatever you ask, it will be given to you from My Father who is in Heaven. Hear our groaning and report it to the throne of the Master, and where you stand before God, the prayer of a righteous man can do much before God. May the Lord not completely forget us, but look down from the heights of heaven on the sorrow of His servants and bestow the fruit of the womb for something useful. Truly, God wants, so do the Lord to Abraham and Sarah, Zechariah and Elizabeth, Joachim and Anna, pray with him. May the Lord God do this to us, out of His mercy and ineffable love for mankind. Blessed be the name of the Lord from now on and forever. Amen.

Prayer for Healing

“O blessed one, Mother Matrono, hear and accept us now, sinners, praying to you, who have learned throughout your entire life to receive and listen to all those who suffer and mourn, with faith and hope who resort to your intercession and help, giving quick help and miraculous healing to everyone; May your mercy not fail now for us, unworthy, restless in this busy world and nowhere finding consolation and compassion in spiritual sorrows and help in bodily illnesses: heal our illnesses, deliver us from the temptations and torment of the devil, who passionately fights, help us convey our everyday Cross, to bear all the hardships of life and not lose the image of God in it, to preserve the Orthodox faith until the end of our days, to have strong trust and hope in God and unfeigned love for others; help us, after departing from this life, to achieve the Kingdom of Heaven with all those who please God, glorifying the mercy and goodness of the Heavenly Father, glorified in the Trinity, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen".
