Human nature is such that it simply needs the support of higher powers. Faith in God gives hope to some people, patience to others, love and strengthening of spirit to others. Trust in the Lord has always helped maintain the integrity of the soul in difficult times; faith itself is associated with such concepts as hope and love.
Now the influence of the church is undeniable, many people are gradually coming into its fold, asking the Lord for intercession and help. Prayer really helps, miraculous relics serve healing, the names of many saints are known throughout the world. However, not everyone is familiar with Saint Ludmila of Czechia, although her intercession may be important for family happiness, well-being, and the health of children and loved ones.
Who is the Princess of Bohemia
The Czech Republic became the birthplace of the great mother, but today her name is practically forgotten there. Saint Ludmila was born into the family of Slavibor, a Serbian prince, in 860. At a very young age, she got married and left her father’s house, leaving with her husband to a land that was distant at that time - the Czech Republic. The marriage with Prince Borzhivoj from the Přemyslid family served as the reason for the unification of tribes on the territory of the modern Czech state. Documentary information indicates that she was highly educated and spoke several languages, including Latin and Greek.
It is noted in Czech manuscripts that the Czech Princess Saint Ludmila rose in the land of Bohemia like a morning star. She became a symbol of faith and truth, and dispersed the darkness of error with the ray of true Christianity.
Saint Lyudmila: life, baptism
At that time, the couple adhered to the pagan faith, but the situation was changed by their acquaintance with the great enlightener Methodius. It is likely that this translator from Aramaic, Latin, Greek and other languages, the creator of Slavic writing, made a strong impression on the young couple. Already in 882, the couple, in the presence of Methodius, received the sacrament of baptism.
The princely couple in the Czech Republic erected the first temple of the Christian faith on this land in Levy Hradec, which was named in honor of St. Clement. The holy martyr Lyudmila and her husband, having been baptized, began to contribute to the spread of the Orthodox faith in the Czech state. The pious couple built churches in their principality and invited priests to perform prayers and services.

Sons of the princely couple
The couple had four daughters and two male children. All offspring were raised in the fear of God. The prince passed away at the age of 39, leaving his twenty-nine-year-old wife in widow's grief. The eldest son, Spitignev, also died early, and the youngest, Bratislava, took the throne, but the state was actually ruled by his mother, who was considered a wise ruler. Saint Lyudmila led a righteous life in the Christian faith, helping all those in need, the sick and disadvantaged.
Despite all the efforts of the princess, paganism persisted on the territory of the state, especially among the Polabian Slavs who inhabited the neighboring lands. The affairs of German Romanism not only did not contribute to the rapprochement of local peoples with Christianity, but, on the contrary, became a strong fuel for hostility against it. Bratislava's wife, Dragomira, was a pagan, which, according to some sources, seems very doubtful. It is unlikely that in such a Christian family as the prince’s, the prince’s wife was unbaptized. However, legends claim that she was not a true believer, she was distinguished by arrogance and pride, and due to such character traits and inflexibility, she valued everything Slavic, including paganism. The hatred of faith, brought up in the Polabian Slavs, not without the efforts of the German rulers and missionaries, was also manifested in her.
Grandchildren of Saint Lyudmila
The princely couple gave birth to children - two sons. The boys were not at all like each other: Vyacheslav resembled in character a good father - a deep Christian, Boleslav became a reflection of all the qualities of the wicked Dragomira. The primacy of succession to the throne remained with Vyacheslav, and the prince entrusted his upbringing to his God-fearing mother, Saint Lyudmila. Another son was nurtured by Dragomira.
The prince felt early that his death was near and wanted to secure the throne for Vyacheslav. He summoned eminent rulers, the bishop, and representatives of the church to the Church of the Most Pure Mother of God and, after the liturgy, elevated him to the steps of the altar, where the youth received a bishop's blessing. Despite all the machinations of his daughter-in-law, Vyacheslav was brought up in the Christian law.
The prince left this world in 921, and his minor son received power. The Czech Sejm created a decree according to which Dragomira became regent. Saint Ludmila of Bohemia was engaged in the education and upbringing of her grandson.

Murder of a martyr
Dragomira, despite the spread of the Christian faith, tried to eradicate it from the Czech people. She was able to bring all the remaining infidels in the principality closer to her and began to abolish laws and orders that contributed to the weakening of paganism, which were adopted by Borzhivoj and Bratislava. Idol temples began to be built throughout the Czech land.
Saint Lyudmila expressed her dissatisfaction to her daughter-in-law. But in Dragomira’s soul, pagan madness had long been intertwined with power-hungry ambitions, and she decided to kill her mother-in-law. The princess, obeying the word of Scripture - to avoid any evil, left the capital, then retired to Tetin, where she spent time in prayer, handicrafts, and charity. However, the daughter-in-law found her here too.
On the night of September 15-16, the killers broke into Lyudmila’s house, tearing down the doors of the palace. At this time, the princess knelt in prayer in the home chapel. “So you remember my good deeds?” she asked. Seeing that they were going to strangle her, the princess asked to be struck with a sword in order to shed blood for Christ along with other sufferers. But the killers were aware that bloodshed was a condition for recognition of martyrdom, and resorted to strangulation. Sources suggest that the weapon was a veil, which is now a symbol of Saint Lyudmila. The soul of the martyr went to eternal rest, and the body was buried without observing Christian canons under the city wall of Tetin.
The Lord glorified the burial place of the saint with miracles: burning candles appeared over it every night. The blind began to see when they touched the ground from her grave. The grandson of the princess, having heard about such signs, took the body of the murdered woman to Prague and laid him to rest in the Basilica of St. George.
It is not known for certain whether blessed Vyacheslav knew that Dragomira took part in the murder of Lyudmila. However, contemporaries report that his mother was removed from the court. The prince himself continued to live in deep Christianity and, according to his faith, organized all the affairs of the family and the lands under his control.
There is a known case when a neighboring prince, Radislav, came to the lands of Vyacheslav with an army. Grandson of St. Lyudmila, with his characteristic peacefulness, sent to ask the other side what caused the attack. The answer required a concession to Bohemia, which forced Vyacheslav to march with an army to defend his native side. However, the prince did not want to shed blood and offered a fair fight to Radislav himself, to which he agreed. As a result, the opponent was defeated and asked for forgiveness from Vyacheslav on his knees.
A little later, at the Diet in Worms, Vyacheslav asked Emperor Otto for the relics of the holy martyr Witt, for which he received his favor. The blessed prince brought them to Prague and erected a temple in his honor. It was in this sanctuary that the relics of his grandmother, Lyudmila, were placed.
Year by year, the veneration of the martyr only grew, but the church officially recognized her holiness around 1144. Then the altars of some Czech churches received particles of the relics, and St. Ludmila’s Day began to be celebrated as a church holiday. In 1197-1214, Bishop Daniel II gave his blessing to the painting of icons of the martyr, along with images of other patrons of the Czech land. During the reign of Charles the Fourth, a tombstone was erected over the shrine of the pious princess. Saint Lyudmila, whose angel (memory) day is celebrated on September 29, is still buried in this place.
In 1981, the shrine was opened, and a white silk fabric with a geometric pattern was discovered next to the holy relics. Historians believe that this is a veil (povoy) with which noble ladies covered their heads.

The prayer to Saint Lyudmila, the saint of Christ, must be said with a pure soul and a kind heart. It helps to get rid of sinful thoughts, receive repentance and pardon from the King of Heaven.
In prayers and akathists to the martyr, her grandson, Blessed Vyacheslav, is often mentioned. Through him, prayers are also offered for intercession in relation to one’s own children and grandchildren.
Petitions can be made not only with ready-made prayers, but also in your own words - the intercessor will hear any call for help coming from the soul. Classic akathists are contained in the Canon; these can be purchased at any church store. You can turn to the saint at any time of the day when pious thoughts require it.
Icons of the Venerable Mother in Russia
On the icons, Princess of Bohemia Saint Ludmila is depicted in a long dress, her head is always covered with a crown, in some images - with a princely hat. The main attribute, which has a symbolic meaning, is considered to be the povoy, which goes down to the neck. There are icon painters who depict a rope instead - a symbol of torment. There are very rare icons where the saint is represented with a cup filled with grapes. She is often depicted with the young Vyacheslav, who listens to the teachings.
The icon of St. Lyudmila the Martyr helps prevent family discord and provides protection from evil intent. In front of the images, they pray for the health and well-being of younger household members, for example, grandchildren, children. The saint helps them not to suffer from sin and to take the path of a true Christian.
If a conflict has already matured in the family circle, a prayer offered to the icon of the martyr will help restore peace. A woman born under the name of this intercessor will avoid various troubles by asking and solve all everyday problems.
In Russia, there is an icon of the saint in Moscow, in Kotelniki, at the Compound of the Orthodox Church and Slovakia, it is located in the Church of St. Nicholas. On the day of remembrance of the martyr, a piece of her relics is brought here every year. You can also pray in front of the icon in the Church of Vyacheslav the Czech, which was built in Barvikha. Other images, less well known, can be found in churches in all corners of the country.
Saint Lyudmila: Angel's Day
Customs dictated that a child should be named on the eighth day after birth. The priest chose the name, guided by Christmastide. The martyr, in whose honor the child received a name, became his heavenly intercessor. The Orthodox adhere to this order to this day. All girls with the name Lyudmila (subject to baptism in it) must honor their guardian angel and intercessor, who is the reverend princess. Angel Day is celebrated on September 29th.
Also celebrated is the day of remembrance of the holy martyr, blessed princess of the Czech Republic - Lyudmila. It is celebrated by the church on September 16 according to the old style and on September 29 according to the new style. The saint can be considered a heavenly patroness by all believers who seek her intercession.

Temples in Prague
The Catholic Church of St. Lyudmila the Martyr was founded in 1888. It is located on Mira Square, in the city district of Vinohrady. This magnificent neo-Gothic building is distinguished by two tall, absolutely identical bell towers. The temple was built in such a way that it seems to float above the square. The height of the towers with a spire is sixty meters. The Church of St. Lyudmila is the dominant feature of the adjacent space and attracts not only worshipers, but also tourists.
A high flight of stairs leads to the main entrance; the heavy doors and portal are decorated with strict ornaments. There are stone porticos on both sides of the entrance, and a large rose window above the portal. Due to the pointed elongated windows, the appearance of the towers seems elongated vertically. The tympanum is decorated with relief images of Christ and saints Wenceslas and Lyudmila.
The Church of St. Lyudmila is active and is the property of the Roman Church. Christians who have accepted the Catholic faith, along with the Orthodox, celebrate the day of the pious Lyudmila and honor her. The sanctuary is open to all believers during services.
Another, no less famous temple was erected in the town of Tetin, near Karlstejn Castle. According to legend, it was erected on the spot where the princess was killed. Under the main altar there is a stone on which - again, according to legend - the saint was praying when the stranglers crept up on her.
The Church of the Martyr, but already belonging to the Russian Orthodox Church, was consecrated in Prague at the end of 2012. It was erected in the former exhibition pavilion of the Rostorgpredstva on Siberian Square. During Soviet times, construction and agricultural equipment was exhibited here, and at a later time there was an exhibition of retro cars. Not long ago, the territory was returned to the fold of the Orthodox Church.
As part of the first stage of reconstruction work, the arrangement of the church was carried out within the main circular volume of the structure. The second stage involves the construction of a bell tower and domes. However, the Orthodox Church of St. Ludmila in Prague is already receiving parishioners who want to offer prayer to the saint. And also those who count on her heavenly help.

Mts. Lyudmila Czech. Icon. XXI century (Vladimir monastery of the Valaam monastery) (Approx. 860-921), monastery. (commemoration 16 September; memorial commemoration 16 and 21 October), book. Czech. Life of L., not preserved to this day. time, written in mid. 70s X century, when the Prague bishopric was created, which needed its patron saints. This conclusion was reached by researchers who studied materials dedicated to L. Lit. The model for this Life was the Life of Emmeram (Imram), a Bavarian saint from Regensburg. Extracts from this unpreserved Life were a short Life of L., beginning with the words “Fuit in provinciae Boemorum”, and a Life of L. consisting of Old Russian. Prologue. This source was used more widely in the work of the 90s. 10th century - “Christian Legend”, where the text of the source was subjected to stylistic revision.
Information about L. is also contained in the Lives of her grandson, St. Vaclav (Vyacheslav): in the Life, beginning with the words “Crescente fide”, written at the end. X century Bishop of Mantua Gumpold, and in “The Legend of Nikolsky” - a compilation of the 11th century. among the sources of which, as researchers believe, was the more complete text of “Crescente...”. Slav also contains important information. Life of St. Wenceslas, preserved in ancient Russian lists.

The legend “Fuit...” states that L. died at the age of 61, so she was born ca. 860. Sources differ on its origins. The “Christian Legend” says that she was the daughter of Slavibor, the prince of the Pshovan tribe (in the territory of the modern Czech Republic, in the region of the city of Melnik), in the prologue Life of L. - the daughter of a Serbian prince, the ruler of the Lusatian Serbs. According to researchers, she married Borzhivoy, the prince of the Czech tribe, in the middle. 70s 9th century Borzhivoy was baptized equal to the Apostles. Methodius at the court of Svyatopolk the Great Moravian, apparently in the beginning. 80s 9th century Together with him, or soon after his return to the Czech Republic, L. was baptized. Sources have preserved little information about L.’s life during the reign of Borzhivoj (d. before 890), and then his and L.’s sons, Spitignev and Vratislav I. Only her charity is noted. , to which the income from the property allocated to her went, and her patronage of the priests, of whom Presbyter Paul was especially close to L.
Information about L. appears in sources only when talking about the upbringing of Vratislav’s son Vaclav (he was later canonized as a saint). In the text slav. Lives of St. Vaclav (“Vostokovskaya Legend”) it is reported that L. gave her grandson “to teach Slovenian books,” that is, Slavic literacy. This news is unique and allows us to explain subsequent events reflected in a number of hagiographic sources.

Killing MC. Lyudmila Czech. Miniature from Dalimilov's Chronicle. Beginning 1310
As told in the “Christian Legend”, after the death of Prince. Vratislava gathered in Prague, Czech. the nobility handed over his sons, Vaclav and Boleslav, to be raised by L. This caused sharp discontent of the widow of the late Prince Dragomira and representatives of the nobility close to her. Dragomira feared that L. would take advantage of her position to seize power. In addition, the texts of the Lives of Wenceslas say that she was dissatisfied with the upbringing that she received under the supervision of L. Wenceslas. Dragomira’s fears are most fully conveyed in the text of “Nikolsky’s Legend”: “... it is not fitting for him to be a prince, he is turned away from the clergy and from my mother-in-law, and is like me” (Tales... P. 77). As reported by the Life of L. and the Christian Legend, L. (obviously, after the clashes that took place) retired together with the priests close to her, led by Paul, to the city of Tetin on the land of “Pshovan” (probably her possession).
The description of subsequent events in the Lives of Wenceslas and the Christian Legend is preceded by a story about the vision of Wenceslas, in which he saw the devastated and destroyed house of the priest. Paul, and the saint perceived this dream as a harbinger of future misfortunes threatening L. and the priests.
Further events are described briefly in the Lives of St. Wenceslas and in more detail - in the short Lives of L. and the “Christian Legend”. Dragomira sent a detachment of warriors to Tetin, led by her close associates Tuna and Gomon, to kill L. Foreseeing what would happen, L. ordered the priest. Paul to perform the service, then confessed and received communion. 15 Sep. 921 Dragomir's warriors burst into the courtyard of L's house. All 3 texts say that L. asked to be beheaded with a sword, but the killers strangled her. In the “Legend of Christian” and “Fuit...” we are talking about the strangulation of the princess with a rope, but in the prologue Life of L. it is stated that she was strangled with her scarf or bandage (according to other sources - a scarf). Subsequently, part of the headdress was kept in the church of the Great Martyr. George along with the relics of the saints. Priests close to L. fled, their property was plundered. As noted in the prologue Life of L., she was buried near the city wall; Burning candles were repeatedly seen at the site of her burial, and a blind man received his sight by touching the burial site. The “Christian Legend” also notes that a fragrance emanated from L.’s relics. Dragomira, who became aware of the miracles, ordered a temple to be erected over L.'s grave. Michael, so that miracles were attributed to the action of the relics of saints located in the temple.

If the murder of L., albeit briefly, is mentioned in the Lives of St. Wenceslas, then the transfer of L.’s remains to Prague by order of the saint is mentioned only in the prologue Life of L. and in more detail in the Christian Legend. It is reported here that the people sent by the prince, led by the priest. Pavel Oct 19 925 the grave was opened, they were convinced of the incorruption of the remains, and on October 21. they were taken to Prague. Here 10 Nov. The relics were solemnly buried in the Church of the Great Martyr. George, consecrated by the clergy from Regensburg. When the remains were transferred to the temple, another miracle occurred - the hunched man straightened up.
The development of veneration for L. was influenced by the fact that in the middle. 70s X century Church of the Great Martyr George was handed over to his wife. Benedictine Mon-Rue, where the Czech sister became the 1st abbess. book Boleslav II. L.'s memory was celebrated on the day of her death (October 16) and on the day of the transfer of her relics. A study of the earliest month books showed that initially the 2nd holiday was considered more important.

In the Christian Legend, at the beginning of the story, L. and her grandson Vaclav are designated as the main Czech saints. However, the cult of L. as a pan-Czech one did not immediately establish itself. Under 1100, the Chronicle of Cosmas of Prague says that the Bishop of Prague. Herman expressed doubts about L.’s holiness and even ordered part of her headdress stored in the monastery to be thrown into the fire, but the fabric miraculously did not burn, and he abandoned his doubts. During the fire in Prague in 1142, the bishops did not witness miracles associated with the tomb of L.
In the 2nd half. XII century The cult of L. spread and established itself. Already in the earliest of the breviaries written in the monastery of the Great Martyr. George, in mid. XII century texts of services read on the day of martyrdom and on the day of transfer of the relics of L. are placed. In 1158 and 1165. Bishop of Prague Daniel placed particles of L.'s relics into the altars of several temples he founded. In con. XII century in the manuscript of the bl. Augustine’s “De civitate Dei” placed an image of L. next to images of other Czech saints. In the 13th century. Temples dedicated to L. appeared in a number of Czech cities. In the beginning. XIV century it was established that the days of her death and the transfer of her relics should be celebrated throughout the entire territory of the Bishop of Prague.
L. was especially revered during the reign of Charles IV (1346-1378). For the 15th century. a certain decline in the veneration of L. is characteristic. But already in the 2nd half. XVI century In addition to Prague, the main centers of veneration of L. in the Czech Republic were the cities of Tetin, Melnik, and Stara Boleslav (now Brandys nad Labem-Stara Boleslav, Czech Republic). At this time, new statues of L. appeared, as well as frescoes depicting scenes from her life.
In 1981, L.'s tomb was opened. An examination of her remains confirmed the evidence from written sources about the saint’s age.
In Dr. In Rus', L. became known thanks to a short Life, published on September 16. included in the lengthy edition of Old Russian. Prologue to the 2nd half. XII century Researchers believe that the Life came to Rus' earlier, probably in the 11th century, thanks to contacts with ancient Russians. scribes from the Sazavsky monastery.

Iconography
In the XII-XIII centuries. in Christ Authentic national subjects are not found in works of art in the Czech Republic (Yuvalova 1998, p. 13). The creation of the first known images of L. occurs in the 14th century - the heyday of the Czech Republic. Gothic (1350-1420) during the reign of Cor. Charles IV (1346-1378). After the coronation of Charles IV in Rome (1355), Prague became the capital of St. Roman Empire - becomes one of the largest art centers in Europe.

In 1348-1365. Karlštejn Castle was built 50 km from Prague, where the emperor collected treasures and relics of his crown. In the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Karlštejn there is the earliest image of L. (mid-2nd third of the 14th century) - an icon by the master Theodoric (Theodoric), a leading representative of the Czechs. Gothic art school. The saint is represented in adulthood, with a halo; depicted waist-deep, her hands folded prayerfully in front of her chest: this gesture can also be read as a sign of humility. In L. the Middle Ages. European clothing typical of the upper princely class. On the head there is a scarf and a gebinde - a tight bandage covering the back of the head and chin; the white color of the headdress indicates a high position in society; the underdress with narrow sleeves and the cape are blue. The master introduced into the image of the saint an iconographic element associated with the Life, which became later. stable: he depicted a scarf constricting L.’s neck, in which she was strangled; the ends of the scarf extend beyond the ark onto the margins of the icon.

Master Theodoric is the author of the painting (before 1365) in the space of the spiral staircase leading to the Chapel of the Holy Cross: on the vaults there are angels with muses. tools, plates of St. Veronica; on the wall on the right is a cycle of 28 episodes telling about St. Wenceslas, on the left - 9 scenes from the Life of L. At the top of the stairs there is a composition combining images of numerous princes and princesses from the Premyslid family; everyone is represented kneeling, with liturgical books in their hands.

On the southern facade of the Cathedral of St. Vita in Prague Castle, decorated with a mosaic with the composition “The Last Judgment” (70s of the 14th century), L. is represented in the central panel along with other patron saints of the Czech land - Procopius, Vitus, Sigismund, Wenceslas, Adalbert - in kneeling prayer to Christ in a mandorla carried by angels; Below are images of Charles IV and his wife Elizabeth of Pomerania. On L. corresponding to the Middle Ages. traditions, the headdress, the outer dress is blue, the underdress is green.
In c. Vmch. George in Prague, built by the son of L. Prince. Vratislav I and became the tomb of the Premyslid family, the saint rests in a separate chapel. The sculptural tombstone with the image of L. was created by order of Charles IV in the 2nd half. XIV century German-Czech architect and sculptor P. Parler (1332/33-1399): L. is depicted full-length with her arms folded on her chest, in a long cape covering the entire body, with a scarf around her neck and in a traditional headdress (in modern times The original tombstone, moved to the National Gallery in Prague, was replaced by a copy). The fresco life-size image of the saint on the inside of the arch at the entrance to the chapel dates back to the late Gothic period. The fact that the artist was guided by the icon of the master Theodoric is evidenced by huge eyes, a fairly large nose and the presence of such an iconographic detail as a scarf; the monumental appearance of the saint conveys general calm. At the same time, Parler created an excerpt endowed with independent iconographic features. So, in her right hand the saint holds a palm branch - known since early Christ. time symbol of victory over death, and with his left hand he holds the closed codex by the spine. To the south On the wall of the chapel are scenes from the Life of L., written in the 1st half. XIX century artist J. Gellihom: communion of L. (according to the Catholic rite) of St. Methodius of Thessalonica; murder of L. in Tetin Castle; the position of L.'s body in a coffin near the wall of her widow's castle Tetin; transfer of L.'s relics from Tetin to Prague Castle.
In Russian iconographic originals, consolidated edition (XVIII century) under September 16. L. is prescribed to be depicted as Equal-to-the-Apostles imp. Elena or king. Olga (Bolshakov. Iconographic original. P. 30). So, in the original according to the list of G.D. Filimonov it says: “Holy Martyrs Lyudmila, women of St. Vecheslav, Prince of Czech; on the head there is a royal crown and a shawl, just like Queen Helena, and the same vestments” (Filimonov. Iconographic original. P. 153). In the Russian tradition, the image of L. was included in the program of painting the Holy Cross Cathedral in the city of Tutaev, carried out by the artel of Gury Nikitin (no later than 1675). A full-length image of the saint is placed on the east. north-west border pillar; L. is dressed in princely patterned clothes, has a white scarf on her head, and holds a cross in her right hand.
