According to her prayers, Christ our God, save our souls.

Life of Saint Paraskeva

The name Paraskeva has ancient Greek roots and is translated as “on the eve of Saturday.” The girl’s parents were wealthy people, but for a long time they did not have children and prayed for a child every Friday. In the Orthodox faith, Friday has a special meaning. It was on this day that Christ was crucified. When, by God's grace, a girl was born into the family, she was named Paraskeva.

The girl professed the Christian faith during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian against Orthodox people. When Paraskeva's parents died, she became a rich bride and many worthy men proposed marriage. But she chose the path of celibacy and called herself the bride of Christ.

For refusing to worship pagan idols, the girl was tied to a tree and tortured. Then she was thrown into prison, where a heavenly angel healed her body. When Eparch Aetius brought her to a pagan temple, an earthquake occurred and all the statues of the gods turned to dust. He assessed this as a magical effect and ordered the saint to be tied to a pole and burned with fire, but the flame turned against the pagans. Frightened by the loss of their influence, the eparch ordered her head to be cut off.

Paraskeva is depicted on icons as a tall girl, with light brown hair and a crown. In the left hand there is a scroll, and in the right hand there is a cross. People who were engaged in agricultural work greatly respected the saint and there was an image of her in every home. The image was decorated with ribbons, flowers, and fragrant herbs. On the day of her feast, Christians went to church and brought the fruits of their labors for consecration. It was customary to consecrate a piece of linen, which is why the saint is also called Paraskeva Linen.

Kontakion, voice 3*

Having brought the all-holy and immaculate torment,/ like a most holy vein, to the immortal Bridegroom Christ,/ the angelic countenance made you glad/ and you defeated the demonic intrigues./ For this reason, for your sake We honor with faith // the long-suffering martyr Paraskeva.

Translation: Having brought the all-holy and blameless torment, as a precious dowry, to the immortal Bridegroom Christ, you rejoiced the angelic assembly and defeated the demonic intrigues. Therefore, we honor you with faith, long-suffering martyr Paraskeva.

The meaning of the Holy Great Martyr Paraskeva Friday in Orthodoxy

A young girl from the city of Iconium, who lived at the end of the 2nd and beginning of the 3rd century, went down in history thanks to her strong position in life and sincere faith in the Savior. She was born on Friday, on this day Christ died on the cross. The girl's parents were rich people and preached the teachings of Jesus. The daughter was named Paraskeva, which means “Friday” in Greek.

Her parents died early, the girl was left alone. She could have gotten married successfully, but she swore allegiance to the Heavenly Bridegroom. Paraskeva spent the inherited property to help the poor. She believed in Christ and preached Christianity in her city, which was banned in those days. Her country was ruled by the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who worshiped pagan Gods. Christians were persecuted, tortured and executed.

Paraskeva of Iconium also suffered for her faith in the Savior. The Christian woman did not renounce Christ even under the most severe torture. The girl refused to worship the pagan Gods and did not want to marry her executioner Aetius, the ruler of Lycaonia. She was tortured for several days, her body was tortured. No amount of torture could break the will of the martyr. In the end, her head was cut off with a sword.

Paraskeva Friday is an example of self-sacrifice and sincere faith in the Savior. The young girl doomed herself to torment by not agreeing to renounce Christ. She entered heaven, the Kingdom of her Heavenly Bridegroom. Her feat remained forever in the memory of believers, glorifying her even many centuries after her death. They turn to the Great Martyr with prayers and ask for protection and intercession. The Church remembers the saint on November 10.
