Canon St. Andrew of Crete on Wednesday of the first week of Great Lent
Song 1, tone 6
Irmos: Helper and Protector be my salvation, This is my God, and I will glorify Him, God of my father, and I will exalt Him, gloriously I will be glorified.
Chorus: Have mercy on me, God, have mercy on me.
From my youth, Christ, I transgressed Your commandments, I was passionately negligent, I passed away my life with despondency. I also call You Savior, save me in the end.
I have been cast down, O Savior, before Thy gates; in my old age, do not cast me aside into hell, but before the end, as a Lover of mankind, grant me remission of my sins.
My wealth, O Savior, having been exhausted in fornication, I am empty of the fruits of the pious, but I am greedy, calling: Father of generosity, you have given me bounty beforehand.
I have fallen into the thieves of my thoughts; now I am all wounded by them and filled with wounds, but having presented myself to myself, Christ the Savior healed me.
The priest foresaw me passing by, and the Levite saw me in the cruel, despising the naked, but Jesus, who appeared from Mary, showed mercy to me.
Reverend Mother Mary, pray to God for us.
Give me radiant grace. from the Divine Providence from above, avoid the passions of darkness, and diligently sing your life to Mary, red correction.
Glory,
Trinity: Pre-existing Trinity, Worshiped in Unity, take away from me the heavy burden of sin, and as you are gracious, give me tears of tenderness.
And now,
Theotokos: Theotokos, Hope and Intercession of those who sing to You, take away from me the heavy burden of sin, and as the Pure Lady, repentant, accept me.
Song 2
Irmos: Listen to the sky, and I will speak and sing of Christ, who came in the flesh from the Virgin.
Like David, he crawled fornication and became defiled, but was washed by the Savior with tears.
No tears, below repentance imam, below tenderness. This is my Savior, as God grants.
I have destroyed my pristine goodness and splendor, and now I lie naked and ashamed.
Do not close Your door to me then, O Lord, Lord, but open this door for me to You who repents.
Inspire the sighs of my soul, and receive the drops of the Savior with my eyes, and save me.
If you are more humane and want to save everyone, call me and accept me as the blessing of one who repents.
Chorus: Most Holy Theotokos, save us.
Most Pure Virgin Mary, the only all-sung One, pray diligently for our salvation.
Irmos: You see, you see, for I am God, who rained down manna and brought forth water from stones of old in the desert by My people, by My one right hand and by My strength.
You see, for I am God, instill in my soul the Lord that cries out, and flee from former sin, and fear as the unwashed, and as the Judge and God.
To whom have you become like a sinful soul? Only the first Cain and Lamech, who petrified the body of villainy and killed the mind with wordless aspirations.
Having transgressed everything before the law, about the soul, you did not resemble Seth, nor did you imitate Enos, nor did you imitate Enoch, nor Noah, but you appeared in the wretchedness of the righteous life.
You alone opened the abyss of the wrath of your God to my soul, and you drowned all flesh, deeds and life, like the earth, and you remained outside the ark of salvation.
Chorus: Reverend Mother Mary, pray to God for us.
With all your zeal and love you flowed to Christ, turning away the first path of sin, feeding in impenetrable deserts, and fulfilling His Divine commandments purely.
Glory,
Trinity: Beginningless, Uncreated Trinity, Indivisible Unity, receive me repentant, save me when I have sinned, I am your creation, do not despise, but have mercy, and deliver me from fiery condemnation.
And now,
Theotokos: Most Pure Lady, Mother of God, Hope flowing to You, and refuge for those in the storm, Merciful and Creator and Your Son, propitiate me with Your prayers.
Song 3
Irmos: Lord, establish on the rock of Your commandments my heart, as if You alone are Holy and Lord.
You did not inherit the blessing of Shem, your damned soul, nor did you have a vast possession, like Japheth, who left you on earth.
From the land of Haran, depart from sin, my soul, come to the land that wears away the ever-animal incorruptibility that Abraham inherited.
My soul heard Abraham, having long ago left the land of the fatherland, and having been a stranger, imitate this will.
At the oak of Mamre, having established the Patriarch Angels, he inherited the promises of catching in his old age.
Isaac, my accursed soul, understanding the new sacrifice, secretly burnt offering to the Lord, imitate his will.
You heard Ismail, my soul became sober, expelled like the birth of a slave, see; Yes, it’s not like you suffer kindly.
Chorus: Reverend Mother Mary, pray to God for us.
I am contained by the storm and anxiety of sins, but now save me, my mother, and lead me to the haven of Divine repentance.
Chorus: Reverend Mother Mary, pray to God for us.
The venerable prayer has now been brought by the venerable one, to the blessed Mother of God with your prayers, open for me the Divine entrances.
Glory,
Trinity: To the Trinity, Simple, Uncreated, Originless Nature, in the Trinity sung by the Hypostasis, save us, who worship Thy power by faith.
And now,
Theotokos: From the flightless Father, in the summer, to the Mother of God, you gave birth unartfully, a strange miracle, the Virgin remained milking.
Song 4
Irmos: The prophet heard Your coming, Lord, and feared, because you wanted to be born of a virgin and appear as a man, and said: I heard Your hearing, and I was afraid, glory to Your power, Lord.
The body has become defiled, the spirit has become scalded, it has become all raw, but as a physician, Christ, heal both with my repentance, wash, cleanse, show my Savior purer than snow.
Thy body and blood, the One crucified for all, have you laid down in the Word: for the body, may you renew me, blood, may you wash me. Thou hast betrayed the spirit, that thou mayest bring me to Christ Thy Parent.
Thou hast made salvation in the midst of the earth. Generous, that we may be saved. By your will you were crucified on the tree, we are coming, closed and opened, the creature above and below, the pagans of all salvation worship you.
May there be a font for me, the blood from Your ribs, together with the drink that has flowed from the water of abandonment, so that I may be cleansed on both sides, anointing myself, and drinking, as the anointing and drink of the Word, the life-giving of Your words.
The cup of the Church of wealth, Thy life-giving ribs, from which flow currents, abandonment and reason, for us, in the image of the Ancient and the New, two together of the Testaments, our Savior.
Naked am I of the palace, naked am I of the marriage, naked of the feast and of the supper; The lamp has gone out, like an oilless palace, I have been enclosed, I am sleeping, I have eaten supper, I am bound hand and foot, I am cast out.
Glory,
Trinity: Inseparable being, unfused Persons, the theologian Thee, the Trinity One Divinity, as the One-King and Co-Throne, I cry out to Thee a great song, in the highest the most hymnable.
And now,
Theotokos: And you give birth, and you are virgin, and you remain in both the nature of the Virgin. When you are born, you renew the laws of nature, but the womb gives birth without giving birth. Wherever God wills, the order of nature is overcome: He creates whatever He wills.
Song 5
Irmos: From the morning night, Lover of mankind, I pray, enlighten me, and guide me in Your commandments, and teach me, O Savior, to do Your will.
Like a heavy disposition, the bitter Pharaoh was the Lord, Ianni and Jambri, soul and body, and immersed in mind, but help me.
The feces of the accursed mind, washed me by the Lord in the bath of my tears, I pray to Thee, making my flesh white as snow.
If I test my deeds, the Savior, I see every person who has exceeded his own sins, as if he has reasoned with reason those who have sinned, not through ignorance.
Have mercy, have mercy, Lord, Thy creation, weaken those who have sinned, for by His pure nature He Himself is One, and is there no one else for You but defilement.
For my sake, this God, you imagined yourself in me, you showed miracles, healing lepers, and tightening the weakened one, you stopped the bleeding current, the Savior, with the touch of vestments.
Chorus: Reverend Mother Mary, pray to God for us.
Having passed through the streams of the Jordan, you found painless peace, having escaped the pleasures of the flesh, even if you healed us with your prayers, venerable one.
Glory,
Trinity: We glorify Thee Trinity, One God: Holy, Holy, Holy art thou, Father, Son and Soul, Simple Being, ever worshiped Unity.
And now,
Theotokos: From You, clothe yourself in my mixture, incorruptible, husbandless Mother of the Virgin, God who created the eyelids, and unite to Yourself human nature.
Song 6
Irmos: I cried out with all my heart to the generous God, and heard me from the underworld, and raised my belly from aphids.
Arise and overcome, like Jesus Amalek, carnal passions, and the Gibeonites, flattering thoughts, ever victorious.
Pass over the flowing nature of time, as before the ark, and awaken the earth in the possession of the promise to the soul, God commands.
For Thou didst save Peter, who cried out to save me, having preceded me, Savior, deliver me from the beast, stretch out Thy hand, and bring me up from the depths of sin.
We are your comforting refuge, Master, Master Christ, but deliver me from the unquenchable depths of sin and despair.
Glory,
Trinity: The Trinity is Simple, Indivisible, Separate and Personal, and the Unit is united by nature, the Father speaks, and the Son, and the Divine Spirit.
And now,
Theotokos: Thy womb of God, give birth to us, imagined for us, Him, as the Creator of all, pray, Mother of God, that we may be justified by Thy prayers.
Lord, have mercy (three times).
Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And now, and forever, and forever and ever. Amen.
Kontakion, tone 6:
My soul, my soul, arise, what are you writing off? The end is approaching, and if you are embarrassed, rise up, so that Christ God, who is everywhere and fulfills everything, will have mercy on you.
Song 7
Irmos: We have sinned, we have sinned, we have acted untruthfully before You, we are inferior to observance, inferior to those who have done what You commanded us; but do not betray us to the end, Fathers God.
Manasseh collected sins by will, setting them up as abominations of passion, and multiplying indignation in the soul, but being zealous for repentance, you gained tenderness.
You were jealous of Achaab's filth, my soul, alas for me, you were the abode of carnal filth, and the vessel was disgraced by passions; but breathe out of your depths and tell God your sins.
May heaven be closed to your soul, and the famine of God will come upon you, when Elijah the Tishbite, like Achaab, did not sometimes obey his words; but having become like Saraffia, nourish the prophetic soul.
Elijah sometimes fell to two fifty Jezebels, when the cold prophets were destroyed, in reproof of Achaab, but follow the example of the two souls, and be strengthened.
Glory,
Trinity: Simple Trinity, Indivisible, Consubstantial, and One Nature, Light and Light, and Holy Three, and One Holy Trinity is sung; but sing, glorify the Belly and Bellys, to the soul of all God.
And now,
Theotokos: We sing to Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee, the Mother of God, as the Indivisible Trinity, who gave birth to the One Christ God, and who You Herself opened to us who exist on heavenly earth.
Song 8
Irmos: Whom the armies of heaven praise, and the Cherubim and Seraphim tremble, every breath and creature, sing, bless, and exalt to all ages.
Have mercy on the justice of the Savior, and deliver me from fire and rebuke, which the imam righteously endured at the trial, weaken me before the end, with virtue and repentance.
Like a thief I cry to You: remember me, like Peter I cry to the mountaineer, weaken the Savior, I call like a publican, I cry like a harlot, accept my weeping, like sometimes the Canaanites.
Festering, Savior, heal my humble soul, O One Physician, apply a plaster to me, and oil and wine, works of repentance, tenderness with tears.
Imitating the Canaanite, have mercy on me, I cry, Son of David; I touch the edge of the robe, as if it were bleeding; I cry like Martha and Mary over Lazarus.
Glory,
Trinity: Father without beginning, Son without beginning, Good Comforter, Righteous Soul, Word of God to the Parent, Father without beginning to the Word, Living and Creator of the Soul, Trinity Unity, have mercy on me.
And now,
Theotokos: As from the conversion of the scarlet, O most pure, intelligent scarlet of Emmanuel, the flesh was consumed within in Thy womb, therefore we truly venerate Thee as the Mother of God.
Song 9
Irmos: Of the seedless conception there is an unspeakable nativity, to the mother of the husbandless fruit the incorruptible fruit, for God's birth renews the nature; In the same way, we all give birth to You as the Blessed Mother of God, we magnify you Orthodoxy.
Healing ailments, preaching the good news to the poor, Christ the Word, healing evildoers, eating with publicans, talking with sinners, returning the soul of Jairus to Jairus’ daughter who had died with the touch of your hand.
The publican was saved, and the harlot remained chaste, and the Pharisee boasted and was condemned. Oh, cleanse me, oh, have mercy on me, this majestic cry: God, I thank you, and other crazy verbs.
Zacchaeus was a publican, but he was saved, and Simon, a Pharisee, was blessed, and the harlot took permission from Him who had the strength to forsake sins, which the soul strives to imitate.
You were not jealous of the harlot, O my accursed soul, even though you accepted the world of alavaster, with tears you smeared the nose of Savior, but you cut off the hair of ancient sins from the handwriting that tore her apart.
The cities to which Christ gave the gospel, my soul, you knew what a curse there was; Fear the instructions, lest you become like them, whom the Lord likened to Sodomites, even condemn them to hell.
Let my soul not grieve, having appeared in despair, but the Canaanites having heard faith, were healed by the word of God; Son of David, save me too, cry from the depths of your heart, as she did to Christ.
Glory,
Trinity: Let us glorify the Father, exalt the Son, faithfully worship the Divine Spirit, the Indivisible Trinity, the Unity in essence, as Light and Light, and Life and Life, life-giving and illuminating of ends.
And now,
Theotokos: Preserve Your City, Most Pure Mother of God, in You this reigns faithfully, in You it is established, and through You it conquers, it overcomes every temptation, and captivates warriors, and obedience passes.
Chorus: Reverend Father Andrew, pray to God for us.
Honest Andrew, and most blessed Father, Shepherd of Crete, do not cease praying for those who sing your praises, that we may be delivered from all anger, and sorrow, and corruption, and immeasurable sins, who faithfully honor your memory.
Song 5
Like a heavy disposition, the bitter Pharaoh was, Master, Ianni and Jambri, soul and body, and immersed in mind, but help me.
Ianni and Jambre are the names of Egyptian priests who resisted the miracles of God revealed through the prophet Moses, but were unable to perform such miracles with the help of their gods (Exodus 7:11; 2 Timothy 3:8). In the books of the Old Testament, names are not mentioned, and the number of priests is not mentioned. More information about them was preserved by ancient Jewish tradition, which is reflected in the 2nd letter of the Apostle Paul to Timothy 3:8.
Song 8
Like a robber, I cry to You: remember me; Like Peter, I cry to the mountaineer: weaken me, Savior; I call like a publican, I cry like a harlot; accept my weeping, as sometimes the Canaanites do.
Peter - Apostle Peter. After denying Christ three times (Matt. 26:69-75; Mark 14:66-72; Luke 22:55-62; John 18:15-18, 18:25-27), the rest life mourned his action.
Imitating the Canaanite, have mercy on me, I cry, Son of David; I touch the edge of the robe, as if it were bleeding, I cry, like Martha and Mary over Lazarus.
Canaanite was a Syrophoenician who, despite being a pagan, begged Christ to heal her daughter (Mark 7:24-30).
Son of David - this is how the Jews called Christ because in terms of humanity He was a descendant of King David, as the prophets predicted in the Old Testament.
Martha and Mary are the sisters of Lazarus in Bethany, in whose house Christ stayed. In the Gospel of Luke (Luke 10:38-42), the Lord reproaches Martha for caring about many things, but not about the main thing - instruction in the Word of God.
Lazarus is a friend of Christ, over whom one of the most glorious miracles of the Lord Jesus Christ took place. The Lord resurrected Lazarus, who died from a sudden illness, on the fourth day after death, when Martha and Mary bitterly mourned him and put him in a tomb, from which the stench of a decomposing body was already emanating. The resurrection of Lazarus, witnessed by many people, strengthened the faith of ordinary Israelis in Jesus as the sent Messiah, and confirmed the apostles after the crucifixion of Christ in the hope of His resurrection. This event was the reason that the next day thousands of people greeted the Savior with palm branches during His entry into Jerusalem, and the scribes and Pharisees, seeing how many people believed in Him, finally decided to plot against Christ (John 11:1 -12:11). The memory of righteous Lazarus is celebrated on the Saturday before the Feast of the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem (“Lazarus Saturday”). After his resurrection, righteous Lazarus lived another thirty years and was a bishop in the city of Kiti on the island of Crete.
Song 6
Arise and overcome, like Jesus Amalek, carnal passions, and the Gibeonites, flattering thoughts, ever victorious.
Joshua is the leader of the Israelites on the way to the Promised Land during the exodus from Egypt. After the death of the prophet Moses, he led the holy war of the Israelis against the wicked pagan tribes that inhabited Palestine.
Amalek, Amalekites - a people who, from ancient times, occupied the lands between the Sinai Peninsula and the southwestern part of Palestine, to the borders of Egypt and Arabia. The Amalekites attacked the Israelites during their exodus from Egypt. A battle took place between them, in which the prayer of the prophet Moses helped the Israelites win. When Moses raised his hands in prayer, the Jews won, and when his hands (and with them the prayer) weakened, the Amalekites gained the upper hand. The raised hands of Moses are a prototype of the victorious Cross of the Lord (Exodus 17:8-16). The last mention of the Amalekites in the Old Testament is found in the 2nd book of Samuel (chapter 8), where it is said that King David conquered the lands and gold of the Amalekites.
Gibeonites are residents of the Palestinian pagan city of Gibeon, which the Lord commanded to destroy the Israelites under the leadership of Joshua for their iniquities. Having learned about this formidable command, the cunning Gibeonites came to the Israeli camp under the guise of beggar wanderers from distant lands and forced the Israelites to swear to God that they would not touch them. When the Jews learned that these people were actually residents of Gibeon, they could no longer harm them, since they had taken an oath. The Israelites left the Gibeonites in the camp as servants, forcing them to carry water and chop wood.
Pass over, the flowing nature of time, as before the ark, and wake up these lands in the possession of the promise, the soul, God commands.
Here we remember the miraculous crossing of the Jordan by the Israelis as if on dry land when entering the Promised Land. After the priests brought the Ark of the Covenant into the middle of the river, its waters stopped.
For Thou didst save Peter by crying out, save, having preceded me, Savior, deliver from the beast, stretch out Thy hand, and bring him up from the depths of sin.
Peter is a disciple of Christ, one of the 12 apostles. When the Lord came to the disciples who were in the boat on the water, Peter walked on the water to meet Jesus, but, being frightened, began to drown. The Lord reached out and saved Peter (Matthew 14:23-32).
